BradSneak Thief 2: Second StrikeLet's recap, real quick, shall we? In Pastel Games' Sneak Thief 1: Prime Catch, the mysterious Don Fabiano hired you to steal five inventions created by Prof. Bellamy. The eponymous Sneak Thief, which it turns out is an accurate description AND the name of the orange clad main character, manages to get a hold of a teleporty, diamond-type thing. The teleporty part kicks and, as Sneak Thief 2: Second Strike begins, ol' Sneak Thief is being swallowed by a giant mechanical fish.

Just like its predecessor, Sneak Thief 2: Second Strike is a point-and-click adventure game. You'll use your mouse to poke about a small room, collecting items and searching for the blueprint to one of Prof. Bellamy's inventions. Once you find it, you'll have to assemble your items in accordance with the prints so you can escape.

Where Prime Catch really shone was its graphic style and Second Strike looks just as great. With Second Strike, you'll get more colors, but less stylization. That's not to say the environment doesn't have character. It's just dingier, danker, dominated by pea green walls and random kitchen equipment... just how you'd expect the stomach of a giant mechanical fish to be. The great funky tune from the first game returns and while it'd be nice for something new, the music is enjoyable and its return is welcome.

Play the entire Sneak Thief series:

Just like first game, Second Strike is short and easy. In fact, Second Strike is even easier than the original. There's not much in the way of puzzles and most of your pointing-and-clicking will consist of finding and combining objects.Since there's only one room, finding everything won't take you very long. While the game isn't challenging, it's still fun and it goes by so fast that it's hard to begrudge it for any of its flaws. If you want a great looking game, but don't mind if your mind stays unboggled while you soak up the great aesthetics, animation and music, then definitely check out this fun series.

Walkthrough Guide

Walkthrough

Woohoo, my first walkthrough! Hope it's helpful!

The Exit Hatch

There are two bright orange straws here...be sure to grab them! You'll need them later.

Next, click on the blue bottle in the crate on the right-hand side.

Click on the left side of the screen to go to the sink and fishbowl.

The Sink and the Fishbowl

Click on the sink for a close-up. Grab the pink thing in the drain.

There's also another orange straw hiding towards the bottom of the screen.

Once you've collected it, click the bottom of the screen to zoom out, and then the left side of the screen to change views again.

The Kitchen

There's a lot of stuff on the floor! Grab the two straws and the scary mask.

Click on the top drawer on the left, and grab the pacifier inside.

Open the oven and grab the big metal pot.

Click on the left side of the screen to go to the bookshelf.

The Bookshelf

Get the two orange straws and the red diving suit first.

Next, click on the bookshelf to zoom on. Grab the last straw.

Click on the top book in the pile. The cover will open; grab the ID card inside.

Zoom back out by clicking at the bottom of the screen and then click on the glowing screen to zoom in. It seems to be missing something...

Drag the button in your inventory onto the machine, and then press it. Take the ID card it spits out.

Now click the left side of the screen to return to...

The Exit Hatch

Click on the big door on the back wall, and insert the two ID cards into the slots on either side. (Careful, they are side-specific. If you drag a card into one slot and that doesn't work, try the other side.)

Take the blueprint from inside the safe and look at it. Is that...a diving suit?

Building the Suit

At this point, you should have all 8 straws in your inventory. Combine them with the pacifier to make the breathing apparatus.

Combine the pacifier on a tube with the pot to make a helmet.

Next, turn left to the fishbowl and the sink. Click on the fishbowl to zoom in. Use the scary mask on the puffer fish to frighten him. Sorry, little guy!

Grab the puffer fish and combine him with the bottle to make a bottle of compressed air.

Finally, combine the bottle with the helmet and the helmet with the suit.

Turn right again and click on the exit hatch on the floor to escape. Congratulations!

Thanks to Ziva who posted a walkthrough, mine didn't get put up with the review. Anyway, I figured I'd toss mine up anyway.

Did I manage to discover a hidden shortcut or is this really a 5 minute game? :D

Short or not, it's still the standard we got used to with Pastel. Nice little distraction.

This one was lacking the whole "assemble weird items according to a blueprint" part. In fact, I couldn't combine ANY of the items I found, and it seemed like just having all the collectible items allowed me to progress.

Reply

There must be more than one way to escape, given that you don't use a lot of the items you pick up.

Besides, you get a keycard which can be used on a door, so that must be the other way to escape.

Reply

Okay, there is more than one way to escape. Here's how far I've gotten.

First of all, I think the ending you get when you open the hatch is more likely a death ending, although it's not obvious.

Use the machine button on the screen to the right of the hatch, then press it and get a keycard.

Use both keycards on the safe in front of the hatch and get a blueprint that tells you how to assemble the diving suit.

Collect all 8 straws (if you're missing one, look underneath the sink, that's the one I had not noticed), and combine with the pacifier.

Use the Halloween mask on the fish in the bowl and pick up the frightened blowfish

That's as far as I have gotten for now. I will post more later.

Reply

Okay, I got through the game, and it seems full of bugs, in particular it gives you the ending before you have done all you need. So there is no other ending.

Use the pot with the straws and pacifier to get a diving helmet.

Use the blowfish with the bottle to get a bottle of compressed air

Use the bottle with the helmet to add an oxygen tank.

Finally, combine the helmet with the wet suit and you're good to go

Reply

Actually, the first time I played through, I

picked up everything but the blowfish,

and it let me open the hatch. Same ending as if I went through everything.

Reply

Basically played straight through in about 2 minutes... a little too easy imo...

Reply

This was so short, I don't really know how to rate this. :\

Reply

So... There's

only one ending? And you can get to it no matter how much, or how little, you did?

Now, I'm no fan of super-hard games, but come on! There wasn't even a walkthrough link on the bottom as there usually is on Pastel Games' other works. That's a bad sign about the game's difficulty right there.

Reply

That really did take all of about two minutes. Huh. A shame really.

I didn't figure out a way to pick up or use the fish, but other than that I think I got the stuff (based on the blueprint) - and still, just two minutes.

Reply

I played both of the episodes in succession, so that was like 7 - 10 minutes combined. Good games, but short.

This game was sort of a disappointment. I got out without even assembling anything. I didn't even

get into the keycard cabinet, or even use the button to get the second keycard. I escaped with just the items I found around the room and a scared pufferfish.

I don't know if it's a bug or what, but being able to escape without assembling anything makes this game hardly any fun at all. And I'm usually a big fan of Pastel Games.

Reply

First time I played this I could just click on the hatch and escape without doing anything. Second time I tried it that wasn't possible. Easy to escape the 'proper' way anyway.

Reply

Short and fun like a light gaming snack, but I'm still confused about one thing: is there or isn't there an alternate ending? I tried playing through again but I didn't see any other way out.

Reply

There is no alternate ending - only a glitch that allows you to escape before actually assembling the diving suit.

Reply

Haha, I didn't realize it was a glitch at first, so I got confused when I won without doing anything at all.

Okay, time to beat it the real way.

Reply

That one was a bit too easy.

That one was a bit too easy.

Reply

I just collected almost everything without assembling anything and i could open the hatch and get the ending. Is it supposed to be like this, or is this a bug?

Reply

Happened upon a bug accidentally, out in 2 seconds.

Click on the flourescent light, click on the hatch.

Reply

I've tried several times and discovered that

you do not need to collect anything to beat the game

just look at every place and then click the way out and you will have your equipment on

Reply

Short and sweet :)
Had to chew on the

frightened blowfish

a bit, though.

I've encountered an inventory glitch that I've run into before on some PG titles. It occurs when I pick up an item that occurs multiple times (like the straws here, or the green stones in Submachine: Exploration). I can take these items, but the items appear in odd places in the inventory bar, such as behind other items or on the edge of the game screen, and cause me to be unable to manipulate either those items or the ones they are overlapping.

This occurs both when I am using Firefox and IE. Does anyone know what is causing this? The same titles have worked fine on other machines, but I don't know why.

Thanks,

F.

The "2 second" JIGuest is totally right: two clicks can solve you the game.

Definitely a bug.

I might suggest sarcastically that it's not a bug - clicking the fluorescent light is the "ding" of a great idea, and the character assembles the diving suit himself.

Reply

That must be it :D

I only took the first straw and it let me out! I guess the game has a bug.

This was really, really short o_O
