JayRapture CaptureYou might remember the name Isomura Kai of Tonakai Interactive from the previously reviewed, Out File #01 and Out 2: Out of File, two exceptionally good point-and-click adventures with an unusual twist: You can actually die in them. Kai's latest creation is another jaw-dropper: a shmup minus the shooting(!) and with a unique control mechanic.

In Rapture Capture, take control of a ship with a tug wire attached by waving the mouse back and forth. The tug wire is your only defense against incoming enemies and munitions, use it as a whip to take out anything that comes at you. The tip of the tug wire is especially powerful, as you can even capture enemies with it and whip them around as a weapon. It's fantastic!

Power-ups appear periodically that extend your tug wire, with the extension appearing in bright blue. The longer the blue extension the easier it is to grab enemies, but also the more difficult it becomes to control, so there is a trade-off. Get hit and lose a ship, and you lose the extension, too. You start with 3 ships and earn a bonus ship every 50,000 points.

The game consumes a lot of processing power, so make sure you have little else running and use a speedy browser. If necessary, you can click the mouse to pause the game and to reduce the quality setting in the bottom right corner of the game window.

Analysis: Rapture Capture is a remarkable game not only for its unique gameplay mechanic, but also for its stunning visuals and enveloping soundtrack. The techno background music goes well with the high-tech theme of the game and its green matrix-style monochrome computer graphics and wire frame overlaid 3D-like models. The whole package is exceptionally well-designed and integrated.

I especially enjoyed the control mechanic and was immersed, wide-eyed and in-the-zone almost immediately with it. It's an engaging and compelling game that's quite a bit different than anything I'd every played before. Also notable are the large 'boss' objects that are introduced to constrain movement and make things more difficult to maneuver around, which keeps the action interesting and changes up the gameplay a bit. I found that making smaller, more subtle movements with the whip was better than flailing it back and forth, but sometimes the wider movements were productive, too.

On the downside, this game suffers from an issue common with all Flash games: when the mouse cursor leaves the game window the game loses focus and mouse events are no longer processed. The end result is that your ship stops moving, and in a game like this that could be disastrous. The gestural input this game requires causes this to happen more frequently than usual. So, my best advice is to keep your movements short and be aware of where the mouse cursor is, especially when a boss is around.

Excellent game. Unique control. This is definitely a classic in the making. Well done, Isomura-san! Arigatoo gozaimasu!

Rapture Capture strategy guide

Woo! After a few tries, I completed stage 1, and also managed to get rank 42 of all time. :)

Here are some strategies that I've found to be very useful:

  1. Again, I want to echo that jay's advice about focusing on small movements is paramount. Not only do small movements prevent your mouse from moving out of the screen, but it also makes your whip much less prone to curling up. You can usually sweep out most of the screen with small movements, so don't go overboard with the mouse.

  2. Tip for Mac OS X users: hold down the control key and scroll vertically with a scroll wheel/ball. This'll allow you to zoom in on the game and make it essentially fullscreen, so that it's a bit harder to move your mouse out of the screen. You will also want to go to the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane, and change the zoom options under the Mouse tab to scroll only when the mouse hits the border.)

  3. Just in case anyone didn't know, clicking the mouse button pauses the game. This is useful if you don't want to sit down for a long gaming session, or if you need to catch the phone, or even if you just want to get your mouse back to a good position before you continue playing.

  4. Don't underestimate the power of a longer whip. Yes, as jay said, there's the trade-off of it being harder to control, but if you concentrate on small movements this shouldn't be too much of a problem. On the other hand, the longer whip is indispensable. If you rack up enough powerups, your whip can get twice as long, and really CAN sweep out the entire screen. This'll allow you to get those enemies on the edge of the screen much easier.

  5. When your whip gets completely curled up, it takes both TIME and SPACE in order to unfurl it again, which many times you don't have. This makes it absolutely necessary to learn to use small movements of your mouse. Note that as your whip gets longer, it takes MORE time and MORE space to unfurl it from a completely curled up position. So if you get more powerups, be very careful not to curl it up unless you mean to do that.

  6. One of the greatest benefits of a long whip, though, is that you can use it as a sort of shield. There are a number of times when you want to plow through a column of enemies, and using your whip in the normal manner would make you too vulnerable. So, just completely curl up your whip by moving your ship in one direction until it does so. Then, slowly position your ship under the column of enemies, and then move a little bit in the direction so that your whip unfurls and extends a bit. Leave it there. Your enemies will just move down into the whip and be destroyed. If you have a long enough whip, you should be able to curl it once completely around your ship while simultaneously keeping the last part of it extended so that enemies just run in to it. You won't be completely shielded from one side, but it can be an effective temporary strategy to get through a rough part.

  7. Unless you're already an expert, concentrate on removing enemies from the center 2/3 of the screen. If the enemy is on the edge, chances are he'll just fly past you and go off the bottom of the screen, and you can probably ignore him. (Enemies don't come up from the bottom of the screen, with the exception of the boss.) Also, if you concentrate on the center 2/3, you're less likely to get distracted by that one tiny asteroid on the edge of the screen which will cause your whip to get curled up if you try to get it. Obvious exceptions are for those larger enemies that tend to shoot a lot.

  8. On the other hand, the back of your ship is your definite weak spot. If you're not careful, one of those annoying cross ships can get to the side and in back of you and it's almost impossible to get rid of him with your whip. Since the cross ships move around on the screen and don't always just continue off the bottom, these can be particularly troublesome when they get in back of you. Bug ships less so, but they can sometimes cause you problems too. Make sure to get rid of these if they look like they're headed for your back side.

  9. Learn to use the EMP. This involves catching ships with the tip of your whip and then whipping them around until they explode. Note that you can only catch larger ships on the tip, not smaller ships. The EMP is definitely your friend, and can get you out of some serious sticky situations, especially those involving girders.

  10. When you have an enemy on your EMP, you have to continue colliding it with other things in order for it to finally explode. So once you catch an enemy on your whip's tip, you're not out of the forest yet. Keep moving your whip around and colliding the caught enemy with others. You'll see it slowly turn blue, and then it will finally explode, taking out everything on the screen except girders and bosses.

  11. A consequence of the previous tip is that you can control when a caught enemy explodes, to a certain extent. If you need the EMP right away, destroy as many enemies as you can as fast as possible (but remember, don't flail around too much!). However, if you don't need it right now, consider avoiding hitting enemies for a few seconds to see what's ahead.

  12. Girders can be your friend with an enemy caught on your tip. If you collide a caught enemy with a girder for just a second or two (by keeping the tip of your whip and the caught enemy over the girder), the EMP will immediately go off. Since there are a few areas with a lot of enemies and those annoying girders, use this technique to quickly take out all enemies and then you can concentrate on avoiding the girders.

  13. There are a number of techniques to catch large enemies on your whip's tip.

    1. The easiest way to catch enemies on your whip's tip is by catching them at the top of the screen when it's fully extended. Oftentimes lines of large enemies will appear at the top of the screen, so you can usually be prepared for catching them with your whip's tip immediately.

    2. Then there's the backhand catch: if you're right-handed, you'll tend to have your whip slightly curled up to the right. To perform this catch, move your mouse to the left and extend the whip back and to the left as far as possible and catch the enemy to the side or left of you. (You'll do this in the opposite direction if you're left-handed.)

    3. Then there's the uncurl-and-pounce method. Because your whip's movement is directly tied to your ship's movement, it can be difficult to precisely position your whip's tip to catch an enemy on the middle of the right side of the screen. If you're whip is completely curled up, you can move your mouse off to the left like you're going to do the backhand catch, but when your whip is half-way unfurled, quickly move your mouse back to the right. This'll make a sort of c-shape with your whip that'll move back to the right and "pounce" on the enemy on the right side of the screen.

Hopefully that helps to some of you that are having trouble with this game. :)

This is a lovely game, with a nice soundtrack. Nice find Jay. Ja mata!

Hrm. It's a fun game, but my major complaint is how stiffly and, in my opinion, unintuitively the whip thingy moved. It was irritating when it got all curled up and then it wouldn't move back unless I wiggled the mouse around in the other direction, thereby running into a bunch of pentagon-gunner-thingies. Grr.

Nice concept, either way.

Oh noes, Giant Space Girders!

Serously, I thought this game was good but was wayy too hard. I got stuck at the part where the girders appeared. They corner you, and then the things that fly really close to you, fire 1 bullet, then fly away kill you. Really annoying.

Reply

This game is awesome, intense, and original.
The difficulty needs to be toned down a bit though, it's much too hard for my taste.

Reply

Really cool game. If it weren't for the mouse out-of-window, out-of-focus problem, I would be able to play more than a few minutes, but I'm far too spasmodic to keep the cursor in the flash window. I loved the Out of File games, too. When's #3 coming out?

Reply

grrr.... i wish those meteors werent part of the game.
there are way to much of them on the screen to pay attention to all of them.
so i get killed all the time.

Reply

Interesting concept but it felt like they somehow failed to bring it out in it's fullest. The chain didn't act even close to physically correct so it was a bit hard to control...

AMAZING! The graphics and art style are great, and the music, though a weird choice for the game, is perfect! Great game! I kinda wish there were different power-ups including an extra life after enough time, but, otherwise this game is perfect. It even reminded me of Neon with tthat black velvet thing they've got goin' on there. A score of 42 in my book! (42 is the only score better than 100 on my grade scale) And best of all, I'm in 222nd place! This reminds me of when I was 194th place in ZWoK! -MANAX

Oh noo!!!!
I keep getting to the giant boss guy, but as soon as he fires one bullet, no matter where I am, no matter rather it hits me or not, I just die! Glitch! -MANAX

listen, even if you claim you're "not the shmup kind of guy/girl" (like myself), give this one a shot! really, you'll like it! the flagella-action brings in a new twist to the genre, and once i got over my cynicism, i was hooked. starting out, i had problems getting past the 10k mark, but once you learn how to wield the whip in your favor, the game drastically changes... i found myself with a 40k score in no time, and going back for more! thanks for the sweet find, jay!

Hey Jay and everybody else,

I haven't been active on this site as my grades have slipped a little. I noticed bunches of great games since then and this one caught my eye as soon as acknowledged the title.

Anyways the game itself looks b-e-a-utiful, but as for the movement of the whip it is a little slow. Especially if it gets wrapped up into a long-never-ending curl that seems to make you move your mouse and commit suicide on one of the little boulders. Heh... the game is very nice though and reminds me of some of the bosses in Einhander which is a Playstation 1 game also an amazing game.

Look-e here and check out the water boss this guy defeats him in seconds of him coming up but this game "Rapture Capture" reminded me of this game...

This is one of the best shooters I have ever played, and my new favorite flash game.

For those saying its too hard- Jay's advice about focusing on smaller movements is spot on. Most of the time, you don't need to move the ship all that much to get the chain to go where you want it to. In fact, at least with no length powerups, the position of the chain is directly correlated to how far off center you move. Get to the center, and it should straighten up again. Its flailing around wildly that will earn you the game over screen rather quickly. Also, don't just grab powerup that you can- find a length that you can manage, because it does indeed get harder to control the longer you make the chain.

Also, try to pick up enemies whenever you can, as destroying the enemy caught on your chain is this games version of the screen clearing bomb- VERY useful when you are trying to get throught girders. And I believe the bomb is more powerful the more length you have, but I'm not certain about that.

Anyway, I'm 60th place lol(I just use my first name, David), I'm gonna go back and see if I can change that. :)

Reply

it's frustrating because it's easy to make a simple mistake, backing into a mob etc. a shield would be nice, maybe even utilise the left mouse button, hold down for a buffer to bounce mobs away, hold down for longer for a bigger bounce or area (maybe limit these or make them a pickup).

would be nice to see the game pause if you go out of mouse area, although i don't know if that is possible to do.

having said all that, i just feel like i played a special game, a breakthrough game, the control felt awesome. it's fair enough to say the physics aren't same as a whip, but it isn't a whip. it has its own set of physics and they are simple to understand, the flow between using the beam as a shield and weapon is incredible, is it a shield, or is it a whip? a whippy tractor beam?

this is already a classic imo, an original.

i make stupid mistakes in the game that get me killed. like asteroids etc, when you decide it's a good idea to thrust off and blow the big one up, heh, in this game you get a big chunk of ship on end of beam and cant wait to start waving it about, but you usually end up dying, but that primal instinct is there again once you get the big ship gain, heheh. the fast pace is great so i would say don't tone it down, but give a shield or something but something small because the fact it is hard is what makes it great too.

i would put this up there with all the originals. very excited for the author. you can be proud of that game even if you never changed it. stunning, pure genius.

My highest is 58,700 so far, so I guess I rank 154th :p

BTW, a real nice feature of this game is it's built in Flash 7 so it's playable in the new Wii Opera browser! And it's pretty smooth, too. Probably one of the best Flash games I've played with the Wii, actually.

when you finish you get

w00tz! I'm #7 for today and #32 of all time!

I died in the second go-round, though. So if I understand this right, you can play the game through 5 times, and each time it's harder? O___o

Reply

It's a great idea, but I also complain about the way that you can be forced to move to one side and leave yourself open to attack with your whip curled up.

I would find the game much more fun if I could flick the whip by turning the ship instead of moving it.

Reply

No! no, no, no, no...

After reading the revier and the previous comments I had high anticipations for this game. Sadly, however, it failed to deliver. The controls (whip) are unresponsive to say the least... I really hope there'll be a Rapture Capture II with improved handling because while I think the idea is great, Raptuce Capture just isn't.

Out of 100 points I'd give it ca 20 (of which 15 points are for the game idea)

Reply

Jon - then you're playing it wrong, or expecting something totally different. :p

The game is not unresponsive, unless you're trying to play it on a 286 or something like that.

Heck, as I even mentioned above, it's totally playable on the Wii!

But perhaps I am at fault with my choice of words in the review. Describing it as a "whip" may have been misleading, and might have set up expectations that the game could not deliver on. As a previous commenter said, the controls are not meant to reproduce a whip, "the position of the chain is directly correlated to how far off center you move. Get to the center, and it should straighten up again. Its flailing around wildly that will earn you the game over screen rather quickly."

(You'll do this in the opposite direction if you're left-handed.)

    3. Then there's the uncurl-and-pounce method.

aaargh. i gotta say it, even if it doesn't make sense to anyone.

the weapon is just like one of those toy wooden snakes, that was made from pieces of wood or plastic all hinged together. if you held one of those snakes by the tail and tilted it from side to side, it would wiggle around a bit, get stuck one curved position, and if you tilted it enough to one side the whole snake would curl up into a circle and stay like that. the weapon is just like that - i swear that it's not meant to represent a completely flexible whip, but a toy wooden snake, made from solid hinged pieces.

now that i've most likely made no sense to anyone, i should get back to lurking...

The best way to describe this game is neat but frustrating.

Everyone says "small movements" which is great if you never have to leave the middle of the screen. If you do, to avoid a girder or an enemy that slid past you are screwed dead. It made the game feel like it was playing itself. I'd just wave the move back and forth a little and hope nothing got by. Furthermore, having your "firing" direction tied to your screen position is just horrible design, especially when you put things in the game to force you to move around the screen. It turns into one of those "if you don't play it perfect, you die" games. I don't mind moving around the screen, but then to not be able to fight back against my enemies is really frustrating.

Last negative comment, the bosses took up too much of the screen. I died 4 times on the final boss because my mouse drifed upwards a hair and I collided with him. At that point I was thinking thiss... movement and screen position controls where we can attack, and our movement is limited by the boss taking up 75% of the screen, so what can you do but stand there and pray? Feeling helpless is the one thing you do not want to make your players feel.

I will say I was surprised how well hit detection worked though.

Overall neat idea, mostly well done but a few flaws in the design.

After raving about this game so much a few days ago, I feel a bit foolish about saying this- but it kind of lost its luster after I played through and realized its just the same two levels again, over and over. I guess I should have expected that, being a free flash game, but still it would have been so nice to get a bit more variety in what you can do with such an awesome gameplay mechanic.

don't get stuck to the far right or far left of a girder, or you are girder food!

I think this is a very original idea, and it definitely has potential to be a great game if it were fleshed out more fully. I especially like the simplicity of the controls. It's like a button masher with no buttons to mash!

I have to ask though, am I the only one who noticed the strong phallic overtone of this game?

It didn't even cross my mind.

I play Rapture Capture every time I boot up the Wii. Playing the game with the Wiimote makes the game tremendously gratifying. It's a great reason to launch the Internet channel.
