The Island: Castaway

JohnBThe Island: Castaway is a new sim-meets-RPG game from Sahmon Games. The game combines a Virtual Villagers kind of atmosphere with gameplay reminiscent of Wandering Willows, putting you in the role of a castaway on a lonely tropical island. Gather tons of items you'll use to hunt, fish, build, cook and more, all while fulfilling the needs of your friends and uncovering mystery after mystery on the fog-shrouded land.

The Island: CastawayYou only control one character in The Island: a poor chap named Tom who spends his time running back and forth fulfilling the requests of everyone else on the island. The game progresses through a series of small missions that start off very simple and gradually become more involved. Using just the mouse, click on items to pick them up and store them in your massive inventory. When someone needs something from you, he or she will light up with an exclamation mark over their head. Simply click and your new task will be added to the checklist at the bottom of the screen.

At first, missions are straightforward and must be completed one after another. Soon, though, you'll have more objectives than you can complete, allowing a bit of wiggle room as to which order you complete them. You can push the story along, or you can run around picking up twigs and making fruit salad all day, it's up to you!

Speaking of fruit salad, The Island: Castaway is packed with diversions that play a strong role in the game. Recipes are one facet of this, allowing you to use fruits and meats to create meals that restore large chunks of your health. As you jog around doing your thing, your health gradually decreases, so it's always nice keeping a few meals stashed in your inventory. New recipes are gained through side missions, and they come in handy in a pinch. You'll also learn to fish, hunt, chop trees, plant things and more, all unveiled via new tools as the game progresses.

The Island: CastawayAnalysis: While the visual set-up may remind you of most simulation games on the market, don't let the looks fool you. The Island: Castaway is far from your usual village sim, as it focuses on mini-missions and expanding gameplay as opposed to building a collective, central town. Unlocking trophies is also a big part of the game, and there are 15 to find in all, each with bronze, silver and gold levels.

The story plays a large role in The Island, and while it's not the most original piece of writing this side of To Kill a Mockingbird, you'll feel drawn in by the ever-expanding level of intrigue introduced by island natives, strange languages drawn in the sand, and statues hidden in bushes. Exploration and discovery are strong parts of this game, and you'll always feel like there's something new waiting around the corner.

Sahmon went to great lengths to make the interface friendly, and everything responds to your needs without a hitch. Feeding Tom to keep him healthy is easy, working with recipes and your other tools is simple, and the mini-map (along with the task list) makes it easy to see where characters are located and who wants your attention at the moment. Unfortunately, you can't manually scroll the screen, which is a bit of a letdown, but after a few minutes you won't really mind.

If The Island: Castaway has any faults, it's with the voice acting. The first lines you'll hear spoken will probably make you shudder. Later, the readings improve, but you still get the impression the actors were only allowed one take for the script, so everything sounds stilted and contrived. Casual gamers don't expect perfection from voice acting in our games, but sometimes it's just better to leave it out.

The Island: Castaway will absolutely steal your afternoon away. The combination of quick missions, exploration, discovery, and a seemingly endless supply of items to find, makes you constantly curious as to what awaits you around each corner. Play it casually, but be prepared to sink a lot of time into this excellent game!

The Island: Castaway walkthrough

General Information

  • On the Main Menu you can choose a profile, play or quit, select your options, view the Help file and the Trophy Room.

  • Options include your desired music and sound volume or you can mute them, full versus windowed screen, and a choice to auto save or not. You can also view the credits from the options menu.

  • The help pages show you how to fish; dig up bait and plant seeds; how to trap crabs; how to hunt with purchased or hand-made arrows; how to grow and harvest plants; and how to hack down a dead tree and get its wood.

  • The help pages will pop up as a reminder when you start each new task involving a tool.

  • You will play as Tom, who washes up on the Eastern Beach and decides to have a look around.

  • Start by moving Tom around the beach and click for him to pick up fruit, branches, logs, and pearls.

  • When you need to go into a cave, you will mostly run from left to right until you find the white exit circle, and you will need to do the reverse to go back through the caves.

  • The caves on the Central Beach and in the Central Forest are more up and down.

  • The only time you need to look around in a cave is if you are looking for a character or a statue or item of need.

  • Collect as many items as you can because you will be able to sell them in the Village to get pearls

  • The paths you need to take are marked in a lighter yellow/green shade. Sometimes it is better to just run rather than confront boars in order to get there until you can afford a better bow.

  • Determine at different points in time what Inventory items you need because there may not always be room for what you want.

  • If you run out of room in your Inventory, your choices are to dump something in the Trash or, when you become friendly with the tribe, to sell items to Nomato.

Scene Navigation

  • In the upper left corner you can see the number of pearls you have collected. Pearls are important for buying items in the Village once you meet the natives.

  • When you have the ability to make arrows, your quiver will show you the number of arrows available.

  • Next is a box with a heart and shield. The heart shows Tom's available energy level. When he needs more energy there will be a fruit balloon above his head, meaning you will need to supply him with some food.

  • The shield shows the amount of protection Tom has when he has taken the Protective Potion.

  • The tools you have available for your use are pictured at the top of the screen. Upgrades of tools can be purchased from Mbantuve and become important to your safety and efficiency in performing your tasks.

  • The upper right hand corner has a magnified map of the island which expands as you explore more areas.

  • When you need to feed Tom for him to regain his energy, you may be asked how many of an inventory item you wish to choose.

  • If you want more than one, select the button to escalate the number of items to what you want your choice to be.

  11. John has returned, so talk to him.

  12. He is going back to the cave and wants you to talk to Nomato, so go back to the Village.

  13. Nomato has the second stone and will give it to you in exchange for fruit, vegetables, herbs, fish and meat.

  14. If you have what he wants, give it to him; if not, go collect it.

  15. Go tell John about the stones and discuss that Ugo will not give you the third without good reason. Go talk to Tomano, who tells you about yellow smoke.

  16. Talk to Mike to see if there was a smoke bomb in the ship's gear and he will give you one.

  17. Go see John to assist you with your plan.

  18. The smoke bomb has been set off on the Eastern Beach, and Tom gives John his bow to defend himself in case of need.

  19. Go talk to Nick, who is still somewhere out there.

  20. Go to the Mountains and take the third stone from Ugo's cave. Go back to the Eastern Beach where Ugo is with John.

  21. Screenshot

  22. Ugo disappears, and after your talk with John, he wants to talk a walk. Go see Nicole in the Western Forest because she wants to talk to you.

  23. Nicole thinks you should do something special for Tomano and the villagers for helping to cure Mike, so go to the Village to see what they would like to have.

  24. Tomano would like a broth, so go to camp and cook her some fish soup, unless you have one available in your inventory.

  25. Treat Boguro to a grilled fish.

  26. Treat Phato to some Protective Potion to help him hunt.

  27. Treat Chief Napolo to 2 vegetable salads since he said the first one he had was small.

  28. Go back to camp to talk to Nick, and then John wants to see you.

  29. Tom wants the knife back he loaned to John, but John gave it to Nick.

  30. Mike is back in camp, so talk to him.

  31. John is looking for you again to discuss the stones and altar mechanism.

  32. Nicole and Stefi come to say Nick has kidnapped Amy.

Part 6: Sacrifice

  1. Go find Nick and Amy at the altar just like in Tom's dream at the beginning of the story.

  2. Tom places the 3 stones in their places and Nick falls through the altar. Amy is ok, so Tom looks for Nick and finds the Heart of the Island through the tunnel under the altar.

  3. Nick is under a pile of rubble.

  4. John follows Tom and they have a confrontation with the tribe who is holding John hostage until they get all 12 of their sacred statues.

  5. Go back to camp and talk to Mike. The group goes to the boat Tom found in the Heart of the Island.

  6. Since you probably don't have the last statue, go get it in the tunnel to the Heart of the Island and give all of the statues to the chief to rescue John.

  7. Tomano wants to thank you and have you say good-bye to the rest of the tribe.

  8. After you say good-bye to the tribe, Tomano wants to see you again and gives you a box you are not to open until you get home.

Part 7: Epilogue

  • The group sets sail on the boat. When they come upon a large ship, Tom says something is wrong.

  • Our story says "To Be Continued" so you have yet to finish your task of helping the castaways escape their fate.

I loved Wandering Willows! The screenshots for this game look very appetizing for some reason, and the screenshots along with some of the description kind of reminds me of Lost in Blue. The voice acting bit sounds unfortunate, but I'm definitely going to try this out.

I finished this game about a week ago, and I have to say the review's right on. It was fun for an afternoon, but I didn't enjoy replaying it quite as much, except to buy all level-3 upgrades without buying level-1 or level-2, and also trying to get gold for all of the trophies, many of which were accomplished just by going through the game.

One thing I do wish the developers would have done is to allow the player to go back, after finishing the game and watching the final cutscene. Instead, selecting a finished game save just rolls the credits, when I wanted to maybe get the last few trophies, just for kicks.

So, good for an afternoon, but really not much replay value, and I couldn't figure out how to mute the voices, which were increasingly cringe-worthy.

I am stuck, I talked to food seller got him veg and all he asked for but I don't recall him telling me where the second tablet is so can't progress in the game now! So can anyone tell me where it is pls? thanks to all.

It's Ok sorted now and finished the game but it was a short game would have liked more.

I had a LOT of fun the first minutes because I felt that especially the male characters were designed to appeal to the male audience. For the female characters, only their descriptions were over the top. Compared with the male characters the women were pretty normal. I also suspect that the writers have never met a scientist before.
Nonetheless I enjoyed the game and I agree with the reviewer.

Can someone tell me exactly what I am looking for and where I find it please? I am really stuck.

Just finished playing..

There were some aspects of the game that I enjoyed but overall it was a frustrating experience. Of all the things to pick up on, the mediocre voice acting was waaay down the bottom of my list.

By far the most annoying thing about the game is that your character has to run everywhere; which would be ok if he didn't run in slow motion. Also it's not a small map and frequently tasks would have you running from opposite ends of the island to the other and then back again.. usually just to make some ingrate native a lovely leafy salad or something equally as pointless

My personal favourite fatuous task was something like:

John: "Hey, I think Mike was looking for you at the camp

[pelts across entire island, through caves and swamps, risking life past snakes and wild boar]

Mike: "Hi. John needs to talk to you"

[incredulous pause]

Me: "wtf!"

Also as there aren't actually any puzzles at all of any sort whatsoever, I don't think I could really classify it as a game. In fact it could be better described as exercise in developing patience. If you need more proof of this, look no further than the river which you are forced to cross hundreds of times on a raft, each and every time watching the long drawn out animation of the guy lazily punting. Ever heard of a skip button?!!

It's such a shame because I think this game had real potential. The graphics are awesome, the story is good, the setting and interface is good. It's just that you have to endure hours and hours of running and someone forgot to put any puzzles in.

Okay, I know this is ridiculous, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to open my inventory back up so I can eat!! There is a lock where I believe the little backpack is supposed to be to open it up. I can't get past chapter 1, lol, any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm stuck looking for the kid in the mountains, and waiting to bring Mike the stuff to smoke meat. I have all the stuff, he's just vanished off the map! And I have no clue what to bring the shaman to find the kid... help!

Reply
black_jimmy October 25, 2010 9:21 AM

@Natalie

You should just be able to click the bag/sack icon in the far bottom left to bring up the inventory list. Then just drag food onto the character to eat.

@MaryEllen

From memory the kid is hiding out in the north cave in the mountains area. So you have to go through the first cave to the mountain area, then enter the cave at the top of the screen. I think he was right at the back right of the cave.. you have blunder about in the dark searching for a bit. Once you've found him it'll probably let you find mike to smoke the meat. The tasks are very linear like that.

All of a sudden, my crab net is not working! When I try to throw it, he runs the other way. This is the task where I have to restock the market guy so he will give me the stone.

Reply

I had the crab net issue once. I did not realize I had crab under a net in another location. So he was actually running to release the crab in the other area.

I have just started playing this game, and I really do like it, however I simply cannot finish the early challenge of getting a fish! Each time I get one on the end of the line I click very very slowly about 3 times and when I click the 4th time, the line breaks. Happens every single time, so cannot progress any further. Anyone have any suggesstions please? Many thanks

I thought this game had a lot of potential. It has a similar feel to Wandering Willows, as the reviewer stated. The voice acting was good in places, although a couple times I wondered if I was racist for enjoying the acting.

Will the item received at the end of the game be imported into the sequel, ala the pantaloons in Baldur's Gate?

The berries are

in a small areaalong the north wall of the mountains, in a small pool of water.

Arrows:

Buy them at the village store, which shows as a white star on the world map. Or progress the story far enough to the point where Mike builds the workbench.

Hi.. would really like to know where I could find the axe?

Reply

I am having the same problem as "Q." The woman villager wants me to take care of the boars. I have the meat of 5, as requested, and it also shows she wants a Fuki. I have two in my sack, but it won't register that I have one for her, so I can't give her anything. Is this a bug?

Reply

Does anyone know where to find the fuki that the villager is needing with the boar meat, inventory says i have 6 but not the one she needs i guess???? Im stuck please help!!

Reply

@ Q and Meredith - When you go back the the 5 little patches of ground you will see 1 fuki plant...when you pick the plant it says that it's hers. Hope this helps!

Reply

Where is the village store to buy arrows - do not see a white star on map anywhere

Reply

Can someone pleeaase help with the arrows. All I can do right now is collect pearls and cook and eat food. Phato needs meat for me to get the axe for Mike.......and I can't do that if I can't get arrows to shoot the boar

Reply

Kimchee,
You can use Phato's quiver to shoot a boar but then he will want it back after you use it once.

Once you meet the Village chief and satisfy his needs, which is producing a salad, he will give you the axe that Mike wants.

The trick is to find the 6 Rosemary and give them to his wife first because she will give you seeds and if you are lucky, you might get some Rosemary.

If you use one for the salad and don't have 6 for her, you still have to find another to satisfy her.

Ultimately, to get the total of 7 that need, you will need to go back among the boars and find another Rosemary for the salad without getting damaged.

Hope that helps!

Where to find the edelweiss.

You need to talk to Phato before it appears in the northern cave where you found him during another task.

How do you people know the names of each statue? It's not like the name pops up when you hover over the statue in the statue case, like it should. I'm missing one and am too frustrated to look for it anymore. It's the one where the space looks as if a person is sitting on a horse. It is also the 9th one from the top counting top to bottom, left to right.
*weeps*

where do i find fuki? i stopped playing for awhile and started up again.. did the game mention where to find it before? i've planted seeds but they don't grow fuki!

Reply

where can i find the 12 sacred statue of otau?

Reply

How do we get the names of the statues. Mouse over the plaque with all the statues and the name pops up. The one that is in the lower left corner is the hardest to find.

Oshumare is in the tunnel that goes from the alter to the Heart of the Island. Go about half way and then down and look behind some rocks.

How do you find fuki.

It's best to try to grow it in camp because you have more planting area. If he has it available, you can buy it from Nomato.

Statue of Otau.

Check the Northern Forest above the cave entrance where you talked to Boguro about Phato being missing.

Interaction with Characters

  • A Yellow exclamation point over a character's head means he wants to talk to Tom.

  • A Red exclamation point means that Tom must complete a task or quest to satisfy the person.

  • A Green explanation point means you have completed the task assigned by that character so give them what they wanted.

  • Sometimes when you have all the items the person asked for you will need to combine them into the object they really want; you may need to cook first.

  • Sometimes a picture of a character who wants to talk to you will appear at the left of the screen; find the person and see what they have to say.

  • A conversation doesn't always mean a new task...it may just provide information.

  • To find where a character is located on the island, click on the map in the upper right corner.

  • A blue star will show where everyone is located and you can identify who it is by running your cursor over the star.

  • A yellow star means the person wants to talk to you.

  • A white star identifies the merchants in the Village.

  • A red star means that you have a task you need to fulfill for that person.

  • A missing star means that person is in one of the caves.

  • Tom is shown by a blue circle.

Tasks

  • Tasks are shown in the lower center of the scene and can be scrolled or expanded if there is more than one to be completed.

Part 1: Nightmare

  1. Nicole wants 3 branches to start a fire.

  2. John wants 4 logs to set up a tent.

  3. Mike wants a box of tools from the lifeboat. Go to the small island of the Central Beach to find it and take it back to camp on the Western Beach and receive a fishing pole.

  4. Mike was looking for a shovel so Tom could get bait to fish, but it wasn't in the first box of tools. Go to the Central Beach to find it and receive a shovel when you return it to Mike.

  5. Dig up some bait and catch a fish. Nick will tell you how to grill it.

  6. Go to the deep water and cast your line. When you see the fish icon, slowly click the line until you can take the fish.

  7. Click on the chef's tools in the lower left corner of the screen. If you have all the ingredients, press "Cook" and take the grilled fish to Nick.

  8. Mike thinks there is someone eastward. Take a look around the Central Beach and find Amy. Amy wants water.

  9. Mike is in charge of supplies, so talk to him about the water. He will give you a bottle of water to take to Amy, who asks about her daughter Stefi.

  10. Take Amy back to camp and then talk to Mike. Mike has made a crab trap and wants you to catch 3 crabs for lunch.

  11. Take the crabs to Mike. He says to put lemon on them and grill them, so go to the fire and click on the cook menu.

  12. Take the grilled crabs to Nicole, who is in charge of food supplies.

  13. Talk to John and then go find Mike and tell him about the conversation.

  14. Mike wants 4 logs to build a raft and is going to look for a place to cross the river. Give him the logs.

  15. Nicole wants 3 fruit salads: 2 each of apples, bananas, and kiwi.

  16. Click the recipe list, click on the fruit salad and then "Cook" to assemble them and take them to Nicole.

  17. John is on the Central Beach where he found the statue of Osanjin.

  18. Mike has finished the raft, so time to go across the river to the Western Forest and find Stefi.

Part 2: We are not alone

  1. Stefi is across the river with Phato. Take her back to her Mom and talk to Mike. He wants an axe to build a boat to get off the island.

  2. Go talk to Phato, who gives you a bow and his quiver to use to catch a Boar. Cross the bridge to the right to go to the Central Forest in search of a Boar.

  3. Sneak up behind one carefully because if they get you first, you end up back in camp.

  4. Once you get some Boar meat, take it to Phato. He will let you keep the bow, but he wants his quiver back so you will have to get your own arrows from his father or make your own.

  5. Since you proved yourself as a hunter, you can now meet the people in the Village. Phato takes you there.

  6. Talk to Nepolo, the chief of the tribe, who will give you an axe in exchange for a vegetable salad.

  7. Nomato gathers all the plants that grow on the island and will buy or sell for pearls.

  8. Boguro, who is Nomato's wife and Phato's mother, planted 6 rosemary in the woods and can't find them. She wants you to bring them to her and she will teach you how to plant.

  9. You will need 1 rosemary for the salad, so be sure to collect 7 and watch out for the Boars.

  10. Talk to Nick about the vegetable salad and find out you need 2 each of potatoes, cabbage and turnips.

  11. Talk to Amy, who has made some planting beds but needs seeds. Buy some from Nomato next time you're in the Village.

  12. Current Tasks include an axe for Mike, salad for Nepolo, rosemary for Boguro, and salad ingredients for Nick.

  13. Buy the vegetables from Nomato and have Nick help you make the salad.

  14. Take the salad to Nepolo in exchange for an axe. He will tell you about them having better tools you can buy, so go see Mbantuve.

  15. When you have the 6 Rosemary, give them to Boguro.

  16. Tell John about the other symbol by the bridge in the Central Forest.

  17. Amy wants a fruit cocktail with watermelon and oranges in a coconut shell for you, Stefi, and herself, so gather the ingredients times 3.

  18. Mike wants you to cut down some dried trees and bring him 15 boards for the boat frame.

  19. Once you bring the boards to Mike, you will get a workshop to make your own arrows.

  20. Click the button to make the arrows and show Mike.

  21. John is in the Central Forest by the symbol and wants to talk to you about it.

  22. Mike wants you to catch 4 boars so you can make steaks. Make the steaks when you get the boar meat.

  23. Catch 7 snakes for Tomano and she will give you 150 pearls. She gives you a recipe for a Protective Potion.

  24. You can find the tickseed and rosemary in the forest areas.

  25. Talk to John about the Shaman and then Mike about the drinking water.

Part 3: Friends or Enemies

  1. Nick wants to know if Tom has run across a secluded spot.

  2. Go to the Village and talk to the chief about where they get their drinking water.

  3. Tell Mike about the roaming springs and he says he will find them. Meanwhile he will teach you how to smoke meat.

  4. Boguro wants you to come with her because Phato is missing. She will give you a torch to use in the caves.

  5. Go through the cave where she is standing. Take some Protective Potion when you come out of it at the other entrance because there will be snakes.

  6. Talk to the Shaman, who wants gifts for the spirits.

  7. Find Phato in the cave at the North. Boguro will reward you with 375 pearls and a recipe for stewed pork for you to make and take to the Shaman.

  8. Stefi wants to talk to you because her mother is missing and wants you to find her.

  9. John is outside the cave but Tom goes in and finds Amy and Nick.

  10. Tom assures Stefi her Mom is ok and will be back soon.

  11. The chief wants to see you because he wants to make Tom a member of the tribe for helping Boguro.

  12. Tom asks if John can join in his place, so go find John.

  13. Mike has returned and is resting. He gives you the recipe for the smoked snake and says to cut it before giving 2 to Nicole.

  14. Smoke the snake, give it to Nicole and talk to Mike again.

  15. Tom thinks Mike has a fever but he says he is overheated and nauseous so wants 2 lemons.

  16. Mike goes for the water. John says he needs 5 protective potions for the tribe ritual so give them to him.

  17. Talk to Nick, who is upset that Tom showed up earlier. He is hungry and says he will teach Tom a new recipe when he gets back from collecting dry wood in the forest.

  18. Talk to John, who takes you to the swamp to show you some relics.

  19. Amy wants to talk to you about where Nick went.

  20. John wants to talk to you about the island, so Tom shares what the shaman told him.

  21. Nicole wants to talk about Mike because she thinks something is wrong with him.

  22. Tom finds Mike, who is not feeling well at all, so helps him back to camp.

Part 4: Enemy in the mirror

  1. John told Nick about the inscriptions and Nick went nuts, so Tom needs to find him and talk to him.

  2. Nicole is tending to Mike in the abandoned Village and says he is near death, so go to the Village and talk to the chief.

  3. Talk to Boguro and then Mbantuve to find out where you can find Tomano. Tomano turns out to be on the western edge of the Central Forest.

  4. Tomano needs you to find rosemary and tickseed to make a potion and will go with you to help Mike get well. She also requests edelweiss, which she says is available in the mountains.

  5. Go talk to Phato, who knows the mountains and tells you that edelweiss grows in the cave.

  6. Stop and talk to his father. He wants 10 snake skins so give him 10 snakes, and he will give you 400 pearls.

  7. Go through the cave and to the mountains and into the northwest cave where you found Phato earlier.

  8. Go to the back part that is green and pick the edelweiss and collect the statue you find there.

  9. Screenshot

  10. Take everything to Tomano. She will give you a potion to give to Nicole, who is taking care of Mike.

  11. Take all the soup ingredients to Nick, who will give you the recipe.

  12. Cook the fish soup and take it to Nick.

  13. Boguro wants to talk to you, so go to the Village.

  14. The boars trampled her vegetables, so she wants cabbage, turnips and potatoes; and then she requests 3 boar meat and a fuki.

  15. You can use Boguro's planting area or go back to camp and use the large one there; the seeds are random, so you never know what you are going to get.

  16. You will learn from Borguro that if you do not have room in your inventory to harvest everything, the gods will preserve it for you to come back later and collect when you have the ability to do so.

  17. Screenshot

  18. The chief wants you to come with him to the sanctuary.

  19. Go talk to Nicole and check on Mike.

  20. Go to the Village to talk to Bogura about Mbantuve and Tomano.

  21. Talk to Phato about the feast. He says bring 6 paws.

  22. Talk to Nicole as to John's whereabouts. She said he is probably in the cave where Tom found Nick and Amy.

  23. Nick wants to talk to you because he's still hungry, so cook him some snake stew according to his recipe.

  24. He decides he isn't hungry when you give it to him and seems to be acting strange.

  25. Go talk to Stefi and show her how to fish and then stop to see what Amy wants on your way to find John.

  26. Find John in the Central Beach cave and talk to him.

  27. Go take the food to Mbantuve and then talk to Tomano in the Western Forest.

  28. The chief want to talk to you so go back to the Village.

  29. Return to Nicole with Mike in the Western Forest.

Part 5: Sacred Stones

  1. It feels like an earthquake. Nicole says to check camp and the Village.

  2. Talk to Nick, who is still acting strange, and then go to the Village.

  3. Talk to the chief, who is worried because he saw Phato leave the Village.

  4. Phato is with John at the opening of a cave in the Central Forest.

  5. Phato goes back to the Village and Tom and John explore the cave.

  6. Tom is going to get enough wood to build some fires in the cave, so when you have sufficient branches, go back to John, explore the cave and collect the statue.

  7. John wants you to ask the chief about a stone he found.

  8. Tom talks to the chief, who talks about the Stones of Invoke but won't tell him about them. Go talk to Tomano.

  9. Talk to John about the Stones of Invoke.

  10. Go to camp to wait for John and talk to Amy. She wants a shed built for the vegetables, so build her a shed.

Where is the 3rd stone?

Reply

Where is the Statue of IFA? I found the other 11 but I can't find this one.

Yeah, this game was... okay overall, I agree with black_jimmy in that there's too much mindless navigating over the huge island! After the first hour I found myself clicking on the stars on the map, then letting Tom run across the entire island as I did my math homework. -_-

I still much prefer Wandering Willows, it just had more overall cuteness appeal and the gameplay was smoother.

Huh i finished the game but so what's inside tomano's box?

If you are trying to get the Fuki for the mission with the boar meat, there is one already planted just north of the village, you have to get that particular one or it won't show...plus there are boars there in case you don't already have them.

Reply

Just finished the game and I liked it, although I have to admit sometimes it got annoying when Tom kept running from top to bottom and from left to right.
The only thing I 'hated' is that I'm always obsessed with getting gold trophies in each game. I managed to get them all except the one for exploring the whole island. I'm sure I explored the whole island except for a small piece on the lower right side (at the right of the cave where Nick and Amy where) but it's impossible to get there and I think that's the reason you won't get the gold trophy just the silver one. Anyone had that as well?

Reply

Nathalie,

If you are talking about the little strip between the wall and the water, you have to get there from the Central Forest just before you cross the water to the Village. Check the screenshot under Locations in the walkthrough.

Just finished the game and I like how the Simulation-RPG genre is taking up (is it too bad to hope it'll replace the hidden object craze? XD). Like the others I have played Wandering Willows in the past and was excited to find a game with similar mechanics.

Though with the good comes the bad and once the excitement died down it got a little bit tedious to run around the island. I agree with the others that it could have had a better means to travel (especially through wild boar territory!). So far I don't know what the purpose of the island's design is... other than to be realistic. But game's are not realistic, or if they are somewhat are, they lean more on the aesthetic side of realistic. Am I making sense?

I've had some expectations die within me as well. First, I thought that the first cave we encounter on the Central Beach would lead to the northwestern part of the island (those who've gotten to Part 2 will know what I'm talking about). No such luck. You have to cross a river, run across two islands with boars or snakes before reaching safe haven.

The worst part of this was that I didn't know you could click the stars on the map to auto-pilot your character to the intended NPC's destination. I've finished the game so it's a moot point, but they could have made an interface tutorial or something...

Well, it is an RPG and I didn't mind the endless running and mindless tasks, which are not actually that mindless. Every event you encounter from start to finish has a part in the epilogue and it's always nice to collect, grow, transform or combine items into a new one. It's the novelty of these kinds of games.

It's simpler than Wandering Willows, and I'm only comparing since these two are the only games I know of with this 'genre'. Art's not bad and it's great as a point-and-click, though I wish they could have a keyboard option available. It's not that important though.

The problem with this kind of mechanic, and I'm talking about all games that would like to imitate it, is that there will be a lot of farming. Uh, let me rephrase, since you do have a garden and such... Farming as in running around and hoarding goods. It's devilishly fun but that's when the map's design worked against itself. Apart from fruits and your garden, anything else you'd like to collect would be moving and would either try to kill you or run away from you. Very far. Don't worry, these aren't the gripes of an unsuccessful hunter, I actually managed quite well, but the AI animals' movements range from hostile to retreat. You'll notice the difference when you 'drink' one specific green item... which if you've played any of the Sims series will make you wonder if your character needs a bath.

There's nothing else to say about the game except for the ending, which is a delicious cliffhanger for me. I'm kind of tired of games that involve being stuck in an island so the end scene really hooked me up and I'll be waiting for the next game. :D

Help!! I seem to have a problem no one else has had. I need to take Nomato 5 each of potatos, turnips and fuki. He gave me 20 seeds, from which I grew 3 each - potato, turnip, fuki, cabbage, 4 each - watermelon, pineapples. Where can I get the rest of the vegatables I need?

Reply

itspeaks -
If you no longer have any seeds in your bag, you can go buy more so you can grow more and get the number that you need to take to Nomato.

BTW, if you find you really like this game, a new one is on the horizon. :)

Reply

I'm in Chapter 2: We Are Not Alone.

I received the seeds for planting, but Amy has no interest in planting them now. She wants me to bring her three fruits, including watermelons. But I haven't been able to find watermelons growing on any of the islands. I can't get into the caves yet (to see if there's access to other islands through there) because I have no torch.

Amy's exclamation point is red, so I'm convinced I'm supposed to bring her ripe melons and not just seeds. Can anyone help me figure out where I've missed the track?

Thanks!

You need to dig and plant the seeds to grow a watermelon.

If you have anymore problems, check the walkthrough above the comments.

I finished this a long time ago. Now The Island - Castaway 2 is out, and I just finished it. It's like a prequel to this game, so now I'm playing this one again just to see the characters that were introduced in the prequel and look at what they became.

Hi All

I know I am a bit ahead of things, but I need help with Island Castaway 2. A bit slower than the original, great just the same. If any one else has gotten there, have you found the 'Ashes Behind the Back' in Chapter 4?

After bringing Keja the ingredients for the charm go to the north east of Dungu Lands. Look for a pig playing in a muddy pool, the barrel is behind this muddy pool.

Thanks Kayleigh,

That is where I thought it must be, but for me - I can dig holes, pick flowers, coconuts and shells - shoot boars, crabs and quail, have looked using all potions and still nothing. :( Turns out timing is every thing. :)

Now in Chapter 3: Friends or Enemies

Has anyone else encountered this? Nick wants ingredients for a new recipe. One is a vegetable sold in the tribe's village (yaku? something like that).

The problem: They're sold out. NOW what do I do? The seeds I can buy don't grow them, and I haven't found any growing wild.

Thanks very much for your advice!

P.S. Yes, I've read the walkthrough for that chapter, but this isn't discussed. :-)

There is a section of the walkthrough that lists the ingredients for all the recipes.

If you are talking about Fuki, it must be grown from seed in one of the planting areas.

Wow! Just did an all-nighter! I was having so much fun, I just couldn't walk away from the game. I WILL admit that the art work was a bit cartoonish, but the story was good enough to keep me from really paying attention to the art. But, the graphics, the movement of the characters, was all quite good, and very natural. All things considered it was an excellent game and I had a ton of fun playing it. I DID have a few complaints (Or, it might be more polite to say that there were a couple of things that I wanted to bring to the attention of the game's developers) - and, no, none of them had anything to do with the voice dialog. Aside from Stefi, that is, the other voices all seemed rather normal to me. The person doing Stefi's voice, though, was quite obviously an adult TRYING (But failing, rather badly!) to sound like a little girl.

My first complaint was with the RANDOMNESS when it came to gardening. You go to the guy in the village and buy SEEDS...just SEEDS. You have no idea what KIND of seeds you have until they mature into veggies. I found THAT especially bothersome when I was in need of the Fuki, that's required for the protective potion.

Which brings me to my second complaint. I thought that potion wore off far too quickly - and almost ALWAYS when I was surrounded by those doggone SNAKES! The programmers SHOULD HAVE put in some sort of warning, such as the image of a bottle, in a circle, with a line through it, like those "No Smoking" signs that you see everywhere, and, have the image appear on the screen and flash for a second or two, letting players know that it's time to "Top up" the potion. Having that potion just suddenly QUIT on you when you're standing in the midst of a hundred slithering nasties was not only an unfair trick to pull on us, it REALLY began to tick me at the end of the game, when I was trying to get to that cave that leads to "The Heart Of The Island" (Where the "You-Know-What"(Don't want to give to give away the ending!)was hidden. I got sent back to camp at least TEN TIMES because that stupid potion ran out, just as I was surrounded by vipers! I'm a very even-tempered person, and there aren't too many things that ruffle my feathers, but having this happen REPEATEDLY, as I was so near to the end of the game, was downright exasperating!

Another thing that I could have done without, was Tom's insatiable appetite! The man was almost perpetually ravenous. Having Tom suddenly begin to (Well, at least it seemed so to me>) move in slow motion, and at the same time tell me "I need to eat something!" or "I don't have the energy to dig (or perform some other action)." was more than just tiresome. It happened so often, that I was on the verge of pulling out my hair! I'm sure I spent most of my time, preparing meals for the guy.

Did anyone find themselves wondering WHY the developers had Tom build that "storage" shed? Seriously...no one EVER used the thing! It was SUPPOSED" to be for storing the produce, fish, crabmeat, and pork that Tom either caught or gathered, but for some reason the storage shed seemed to be completely forgotten by the game's developers. After it was built, it simply...sat there...for the remainder of the game. It was never again mentioned. Go figure!

There were a number of things that had me scratching my head, such as when Mike gave Tom instructions for smoking the meat they caught. It was "The best way", he said, to preserve what they caught and prevent spoilage. Tom accepted the Mike's instructions, and said he'd get started on it right away. But, this too seemed to be forgotten, because it was never again mentioned. I mean, the LEAST the developers could have done, was show a system of ropes, or vines, stretched between poles, with a smoky campfire built close to it. On the lines, there should have been fishes, pork, crabmeat, and snakemeat. There was, in fact, such a structure in the native village. It was located near the hut of the merchant. However, no mention of it was ever made.

And, why was no one assigned the task of gathering water? Mike spoke of leaving behind "Water Bottles",while he went searching for the spring. This is when Tom volunteered to get the water, because it was plain to see that Mike was not well. But, Mike insisted he was fine, he was just a little fatigued and "overheated". He just needed to rest a few moments, and then he'd go and get the water. Tom gave in, but it wasn't long after this that Nicole sought Tom out to tell him that Mike was terribly ill. She thought it was "Food Poisoning", but Tom knew Mike would never risk eating or drinking something until it was proven safe. Tom felt that someone had deliberately poisoned Mike. This was the last time that gathering water was mentioned.

Even though the story moved very from one "Quest" to the next, I still found myself wondering why the castaways never built shelters. I mean, it HAS TO rain on the islands. They needed some sort of protection from the elements. And, what an Outhouse? Sooner or later EVERY human being has to obey nature's calling. But, this too, was overlooked.

All things considered, though, this was an excellent game. I haven't done an all-nighter in quite some time, because there just hasn't that many games that captured my interest as this one did. As I watched the opening cut scene, I found myself thinking, "Oh, Jeeze! This looks like it's going to be lame! But, I ended up be pleasantly surprised. The game had interesting characters, a captivating story, and moved along quickly. It DID bog down a bit when Tom ran out of energy and had to be fed. And, I admit to becoming unusually vexed when Tom's "potion" repeatedly quit on him was he was surrounded by hissing vipers, or angry boars. Fortunately, I quickly learned to avoid being taken out of action by the pigs, but the snakes moved far too quickly, and came at you in such numbers that they were next to impossible to avoid.

However. none of these things ruined the game for me, and I had an exceptionally good time playing it through to the end. I give the developers of this game five, HUGE gold stars, and two thumbs up for a job well done. And, now, I'm on my way to look for "The Island: Castaway 2", with high hope for another enjoyable game.
