Isn't it an amazing feeling when you go to a concert and the drum beat matches your heart beat? Music has been shown to have restorative powers, and that concept is taken to the extreme in Rhythm Doctor, a one-button game in which you rely on the power of rhythm to save lives.
Rhythm Doctor puts you, a trainee doctor, into the emergency room with a room full of sick and dying patients. In order to save the lives of your 8-bit patients, you need to watch their ECG and hit the spacebar on the seventh beat. The funky background music gives you the tempo and keeps you on track. You start nice and easy with one patient and one heartbeat, but don't get cocky - things quickly get complicated when multiple patients present at the same time, and their heartbeats are all on different rhythms.
Rhythm Doctor is reminiscent of Guitar Hero and similar games. The concept is incredibly simple, but incredibly well executed. The characters are fun and each patient has their own quirk and theme music. You even get to work with 'boss' characters, who glitch the ECG machine and make life incredibly hard for you. Rhythm Doctor will have you bopping along to the music while you try madly to save your little pixelated patients.
Rhythm Doctor is currently only available in demo, but keep an eye out on Steam Greenlight for the full version.
I got to 30% in the demo, but I can't hold a rhythm consistently enough to S anything but the easiest stage. (Plus, those timing windows are tough to adapt to, and I don't have a surface to slam my hand against.)
The music is really good, but several patterns are just unintuitive. Most of the difficulty lies in having to guess at what rhythms arise from multitasking at different speeds. The special effects really make up for it, adding some humor and replay value.
Dev here, thank you for the nice words Bindie!
Thanks for stopping by! Looking forward to playing the full game.
