Machinarium

JohnBFrom Amanita Design, creator of the famously brilliant Samorost series, comes Machinarium, a game so well-conceived and implemented it can confidently launch as one of the best point-and-click adventures of all time. Machinarium is nothing short of a playable piece of art. Similar to Samorost in style and gameplay, Best of Casual Gameplay 2009you play a lone robot thrown out of the city working his way through desolate mechanical slums. Solve puzzles, find and combine items, and encounter loads of creative characters in your quest. Machinarium is one of those rare games you can't praise enough.

Get your cursor ready, you'll need it for this game! Everything is handled with the mouse in Machinarium, all you need to do is click on objects and the robot does the rest. You have to be next to the hotspots in order to use them, so when your cursor turns into a moving pair of feet, click and our hero will waddle in that direction. You also have the ability to change height, a skill you'll need to reach some out-of-the-way objects later on.

machinarium.jpgYou can't die in Machinarium, so feel free to explore all you like. If the robot can't do something, he'll shake his head "no" when you click. And, yes, it's really cute when he does so. Sometimes he'll even give you a clue in the form of a thought bubble if you try and do something that isn't (yet) possible. Little bonus touches like this are what give Machinarium such personality, and they help push along the gameplay, too.

An hour or two into the game, Machinarium suddenly opens up and presents a less linear world for you to explore. The first handful of puzzles take place one after another, each leading organically to the next. At a certain point, however, you find yourself standing in a central hub with things to do in every direction. From here on, Machinarium is more like a traditional adventure game and less like a point-and-click puzzler.

Analysis: It's obvious everyone at Amanita Designs poured their heart and soul into this game. The proof is in the music, the artwork, the puzzles, the gameplay, the interface, the story, the pacing, the animations, the character desi— you get the picture. A fine example of how the studio went well above the norm is the in-game hint system. machinarium2.jpgIf you're heroically stuck on a puzzle and just can't figure out how to solve it, move the cursor to the top right corner of the screen. Click the TV icon and you'll be thrown into a mini-game. Using the controls on the right side of the monitor, you move a flying key up and down in a side-scrolling world. Fire your weapon to take out enemies, avoid the walls, and make it to the lock at the end of the stage. Key + lock = comic-style sketch of how to solve the level, step by step. The only reason I can think of why Amanita did that was because it's awesome.

Each area is packed with visual detail, from intricate backgrounds to fluidly animated characters. Machinarium's world is not a still piece of scenery, it's a living, moving environment loaded with personality. There's so much to look at it can be difficult to know where to start. Somehow, though, you always catch wind of a puzzle on the screen and can manage to discover what needs to be done.

Hotspots in Machinarium, as in any point-and-click game, can be a sore point of discussion. A fine balance has to be found between cleverly hiding the next move and turning the game into a pixel hunt. Machinarium finds that balance well, though there are a few moments when you narrow your eyes because you clicked near the right place, not on it. Proximity determines which objects you can interact with, leading to a fair amount of walking back and forth, moving the cursor around to see what's there. It's all about experimenting and trial-and-error, but because the game world is so full, your curiosity is always tickled, no matter what you end up doing.

As far as length and difficulty are concerned, Machinarium (unsurprisingly) gets them just right. You rarely need the "one hint per puzzle" thought balloon, and even if you resort to the lock and key mini-game you'll slap your forehead when you see the solution. Give each puzzle your best shot before resorting to a walkthrough, as it's especially rewarding to figure out the solutions on your own. Expect a good six hours from Machinarium, more or less depending on your skill.

Machinarium is a magnificent game, and that's all I really need to say. You'll be hooked the moment you see the robot store an item in his belly.

How long is the game? I want to support people who actually make a Mac version, but $20 is a bit outside my usual game purchase budget (I guess BFG spoiled me).

Reply

It's well worth $20. By paying $20 you're not only getting a wonderful game from an independent game developer, but you're also supporting all of the future games they'll make.

I'm not sure how long it will take if you sit there with a walkthrough in front of you. Without a walkthrough though I've been finding the puzzles quite challenging and I've been playing for a couple of hours so far, dipping in and out of it. It's an absolute delight of a game.

Don't believe it, 3rd level and I'm already stuck. Does anyone know how to get past the

part with the cart that flies past you after you use the yellow thing on the tracks?

I've already used the key thing, and I still can't figure it out.

Reply

Made it to the 3rd screen in the canyon, but totally stumped. Figured out the handrail and dials to move the arm, but not sure how to get the scoop.

You can control your guy's size,

to get the scoop, shrink him down so he can get to the circuit board under the water tank

Reply

Yes, spend the $20. In the long run, it may not matter that much to you, but so much to the game designers. You show appreciation and keep them in business.

It is worth it.

SonicLover - if any game was deserving of your epic narrative-walkthroughs, this would be it! I might just buy it so I can follow along with your story telling :)

Reply

Had I money to spend on the Internets, I might do it here, just because it's a game by the Samorost creator, and there's a Mac version. Lacking that, however... How long is the demo?

Reply

Well since I'm an unemployed student siphoning off of my parents' good will, $20 means quite a bit to me actually... $20 for six hours is not a bad money per hour investment, but since I can buy two games at BFG for $14, some of which have replay value, and which are also made mostly by independent studios, my natural tight-fistedness kicks in. I think I'll hold off for now until my financial situation is a bit more stable... and who knows? Like World of Goo, maybe they will license their game to BFG someday, and I'll get it for $6.99 then.

Reply

...That was not 20 minutes. Way too easy, and I felt like the crossing-the-bridge one was kind of a waste of time, since I could have just jumped off a cliff myself instead of convincing a guard that I was a guard as well, just so I'd slip off the bridge anyway. :P

Still fun, but I don't have $20 to spend, and I'm not sure it'd be worth it on this.

Oooohhhhhh yes!
I've been waiting for Machinarium's release and now that I've paid the $21.13 AUD for it I intend to work this game out without the walkthrough (but thanks to those who've made the effort to post them). I intend to savour the graphics and scenery with the music and enjoy the puzzling. Amanita Design have without exception created stunning games. And I have to say, to be able to download the soundtrack of the game as a bonus when you download the full version is joy.
Pure bliss!

Why it dosen't suprise me that Machinarium is the top rated game on this site

It's a brilliant game, as expected. I love how all the characters have personalities of their own and how the robot has memories cos it makes you identify with it and try harder to finish the game (I hope it has a happy ending!). It also makes you want to hug it :).

However, it's a bit more difficult than the review would have you believe. Sometimes you don't see an item cos it looks like any other piece of scenery, and some of the solutions aren't exactly logical, but I guess most point&click games are guilty of that.

Oh, and I'm stuck at

the bit where you have to get the bird to fall. I've been making the poor robot exercise for a whole minute and nothing. I tried slower and faster, moving the bird from one part of the cable to the other, and I think I'll make the robot fall apart sooner than get the bird to give me my puzzle piece :(

I really enjoyed this game all in all! It's very beautiful and the soundtrack was amazing :). So glad they included it so I can listen whenever I want!

I found most of the puzzles logical and could solve them by myself despite a couple of "huh?" moments such as:

The projector lens in the fly trap... How was I supposed to know that's where it'd be? I spent ages trying to see the spots on the butterfly flying around, and assumed I couldn't see the other wing

I found the arcade game parts of Machinarium a little jarring, especially the:

Shoot-em-up in the big robot's brain, which I felt was a bit of a let down for a climactic end puzzle

In saying that I loved the idea of the locked walkthrough book, a few times I was tempted to take a peek, but then after dieing a couple times on the little game I decided to make another attempt, but on puzzles that I found were far to frustrating such as:

The final sokoban-esk box pushing puzzle in the arcade... I spend half an hour before I gave up!

I was willing to play through the game to get past the part that frustrated me. The idea was very clever.

I was a little dissapointed with the end...

I found the heart-thumpingly tricky bomb puzzle to be a much better climax, and if this puzzle and the Big head robot puzzle had been switched It would have made for a more emotionally tense ending.

That said, I spend a nice afternoon playing through it and I still rate it 5 mushrooms. Well worth the $20

sam:

The solution to that puzzle is:

found in the big brain robot's lab... if you notice the numbers above the little piano thing outside the lab, they read 7.0 and 180, there's a little radio in the lab that, when you tune it to 7.0 x 180, plays a short song, that's the song you enter into the little piano. I agree that it was a bit of a confusing puzzle.

Here's a little hint:

Have you noticed that the little bird doesn't just follow your up and down movements?

Still stuck?

He also follows your left and right movement... I wonder where you could lead him?

One more hint...

Maybe you could lead him somewhere you can REALLY shake him up?

Reply

I know many people have probaly said this before, but I love the art style.

Reply

Finished. I LOVED the music with the musicians and the outside elevator... I would suggest standing around in quite a few of the scenes just to take in the music and the interaction with the scenery our little friend has...

Sad it's over... but happy the music is still here... I still go back to

jam out with the street musicians after you got the pegs and chased the mouse out with the cat

Ominous Tower

  • Keep going up, nothing to do here yet

Town Plaza

  • Pick up the crank handle in the foreground

  • Speak to the robot in the wheelchair and take the oil can

  • Speak to the pink robot

  • Use the crank to set the clock to that position

  • After the robot in the hat leaves, go to where he was and take the speaker

  • Go up the stairs next to the clock

Arcade Terrace

  • Open the panel at the bottom of the electricity pole

  • Slide the tiles around; one should fall out

  • Keep sliding the tiles around to form a path from bottom to top, or at least one that would be complete if that missing tile was there

There will be gaps in the upper left and lower right; the "(C" tile goes in the top middle, and the bottom middle tile's already in the correct position

  • Once you're done messing with that, walk close to the arcade entrance

  • Stretch up and squat down in a regular rhythm; keep doing that until the wire breaks

  • Tie the wire to the railing

  • Pick up the tile and put it in the upper left corner of the grid

  • Use the cat on the big pipe instrument

  • Pick up the vine

  • Exit through the left doorway

City Gate

  • Use the oil can on the oil spill

  • Go back to the Bar

Bar

  • Use the flies on the bartender

  • Quickly drag the oil drum outside

Performer's Square

  • Watch the show, then grab the broken radio

  • Combine the broken radio with the speaker

  • Go back to the Town Plaza

Town Plaza

  • Give the oil can to the robot in the wheelchair, then take it back

  • Open the manhole and enter

Sewer

  • Examine the pipes and take the hook hanging on them

  • Open the drawer and flip to the last page of the book; take the wrench there

  • Look in the drain in the bottom of the pool; use the hook to fetch the wrench there

  • Look down the pipe

  • Examine the pipes again; use the three wrenches to stop the water flow to the fountain

Stop the first two valves in the top row, and the second valve in the bottom row

  • Once that's done, speak to the wrench-bot

  • Use the radio on the small table where the phonograph apparently was

  • Watch the justice

  • Return to the Town Plaza

Town Plaza

  • Jump down into the dry fountain

If you purchase the full version, no need to return here to play as shortcuts to the game will also be downloaded and you can play offline.

@ spanpris:
$20 does seem a lot to pay but you get a lot of game for your money; about 30 more levels after the demo. Plus you get to download the game in Windows, Mac and Linux formats, as well as the soundtrack for the game. I reckon it's $20 well worth spent.

I'll spruik anytime for Amanita :)

I can not for the life of me win the key mini game. I can't even get past one spider. I need a version where none of them move... even that would probably take me forever. I've been trying now for 3 hours out of sheer determination

Reply

@trishaleigh08:
You have to shoot the spiders by pushing the round button. (The same button that starts the key game moving.) It took me a while to figure that one out too.

Reply

Anyone who gets stuck with the bird may try this.

Move your body up and down slowly and you will pass.

Reply

RF -
after you get the elevator to work, you should now be able to climb up the drainpipe just up and to the right of the elevator doors.

Reply

to mods: feel free to fix my engRish.

ok I have managed to past the bird.. here is what I do:

watch the rope swings, when it start changing momentum, move your robot. IE: first you raise your robot, the rope goes up, then when the rope go down, quickly duck, and so on. It is quiet hard, but you know you are doing it right if the rope swings harder.

Here is the continue of the walkthrough to the end:

Clock Hall

go back to clock hall and give the sunflower oil can to the wheeled-robot. He will give you paper access to arcade.

Don't forget to pick the bandage.

Entering Arcade

Go back to the arcade terrace and use the arcade pass on the entrance.

There are three arcade machines, all need power to run.

Get into the bicycle and move your mouse in circle, you need to move it in proper speed. The meter will go up and you will hear click in each cycle if you do it right. Keep cycling until arcade 1 turned on.

After arcade 1 turned on, play it. It is a space invader game. You got three lives and need to get 1000 score. Just like other space invader game, it is best if you shot the bonus red UFO.

Get the coin and go left to the switch.

Turn the switch to two, then spin the bicycle again until arcade 2 is turned on.

Beat the puzzle on arcade 2 and get another coin. Don't bother with arcade 3, it broke.

Guard's doll.

Go back to the clock hall and spend your coins on the battery machine (in top right)

Combine the two batteries with the bandage.

Go to the guard tower and give the battery to the robot guard. Enter the elevator.

Elevator

Get some dirt from the tree. Get the bulb from the mice robot.

There is a symbol hidden between leaves, raise your robot to reveal it.

on the left panel, put the light bulb. You want to go to floor 2.

Make a pentagram. Then go out from the elevator to the royal hall.

Royal Hall and bathroom

You want to get the scissor on the bathroom (room on right). Turn on the electricity on right.

play with the left switch until the cleaning robot reach bathroom.

Go to bathroom, climb the robot, raise up and reach the scissor.

fiddle with cleaning robot control again until it goes below the lamp.

climb up and cut the lamp with your scissor.

move the cleaning robot back to bathroom.

tie the lamp to the robot's back.

Take the lamp and put it to the hole.

Fiddle with the cleaning robot control once again.

Go back to bathroom. After you destroy the hole, use tissue to go down.

The bomb.

You got 5 minutes to match the numbers with correct fuse, just follow the cables. 1=A 2=B and so on.

King's Throne.

Go to the top left machine and solve the puzzle in it.

You will get a cable, plug it to the king.

finish the shooting game. Just like the walkthrough game, there is one downward here: you can't spam bullets and clicking a lot times will cause your character to be unresponsive.

Saving the king, you will get another bulb for elevator and a suggestion to go to floor -1

Aftermath.

Go back to the elevator and form star eight corners to go to floor -1.

Use hammer at the glass to get a key.

Go back to elevator and use the key on the keyhole at right. Get the can of frosting agent.

Use the frosting agent on the lock and then break the lock using the hammer.

You will go up with your girl-robot to the king's room. Here your goal is to activate the ladder.

go to the rooftop and look the numbers on the machine on the left. It is 7.0 108.

go back to the throne room and tweak the music box (left, the orange machine one)until you get 7 in row, 108 in column.

Hear the music and remember it, then go to rooftop and play it on the machine. There are total 7 notes. It is 1423523.

As soon as you hear a sound and the ladder came out, click on the wheel so the robot girl turn it.

Go up and enjoy the short ending.

~~THE END~~

Honestly I don't like the

fighting viruses inside king's head

part and the ending...

It should be longer with some scenery, even seeing our characters fly above town with townsfolk waving would be sweet.

@trishaleigh08: The file is originally called "01010001.001". Right click, copy, and paste so that you have a duplicate to work with (I don't like to mess with the original files). Then just click the file name once so that it's highlighted and you can type a new name. Highlight only the last 001, type mp3 instead, and click outside of the name box somewhere to get out of name-changing mode. Then you just have to import the newly renamed file into your iTunes or wherever.

To Trishaleigh:
With the floating key game, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned that

you can use your up/down arrow keys to move and space bar to shoot

To Crudo, Rosedragon and Starchild:
With the bird on the wire, it's

all about the rhythm - instead of just moving your mouse up and down, try and get a rhythm going and you'll find the bird reaches higher and stretches the wire making it break

Thanks Lucie for the instructions on how to save the buskers' tune.

Re: my problem, in case anyone else has a similar issue.

Without noticing it, I had moved the oil can back towards the grey structure with the pipes. If you do this, it seems the only way you can get it out again is to set the clock to 5. The button will then depress and move the can.

It's a lovely game so far, though trickier than I was expecting having played Samorost and the sequel.

Reply

JIGuest, Rich: yeah, playing that 5-in-a-row game feels like trying to win against Deep Blue. It took me a while to figure that brute force doesn't work, but the machine can be tricked. ;-)

I took a screenshot of the final step just before the computer lost. I used the following strategy to set it up as seen on the picture:

  1. Start building in a saw-like diagonal pattern (blue arrows) until you get an uninterrupted horizontal line with three of your screws (the horizontal rectangle outlined in red on the pic)

  2. Using two other screws, build a straight vertical line that intersects your horizontal line the way outlined on the pic (yellow arrows and the second red rectangle). If the computer is giving you a hard time here, you could do another saw-pattern instead.

  3. (red) Place a screw where the two lines intersect (marked with red X on the pic). Watch the computer trying to figure which one of your two lines to block.

  4. Place your screw in the unblocked line and enjoy your hard-earned victory! :-)

It may help to disguise your pattern with fake line attempts so the computer blocks those instead. It still won't be easy and you need luck too, but at least it's something to go by. Good luck. :-)

I managed to solve the bird on a wire puzzle after I realized the surface of my table was too smooth so my mouse didn't have much traction and the cursor was moving too fast. I put my mouse on top of a piece of woven fabric and I was able to make the movements a lot easier.

I've seen the robot who plays the five-in-a-row game actually makes mistakes and not take the chance to win. But the way to play the game is just like strategy you would use in games like Reversi or Go. You try to set up a situation in which if he blocks one line of five, he leaves you open to finish another one. Don't bother trying to complete a five-in-a-row if you know he'll block you. Just leave it open, block him to prevent him from winning, and try to trick him.

I am feeling very stupid right now. I've read through all of the post and nobody has been stuck where I am. That makes me think I've missed something very easy. I'm in the clock area. I've done almost all of the game without the hint book, but had to open it to figure this one out and it didn't help:

Where do I get the oil or sunflower oil for this guy's wheelchair? Nothing is working and the hint book says I give the can right back to him and then he tells me about sunflower oil or something. I'm completely confused.

Thanks to anyone who can help me. Very upset to be stuck here after I've gotten so far without help.

[Chuck is Stuck - You may not be stuck at all. Many goals in Machinarium take a while to be accomplished. It sounds like from your description you have quite a way to go before you'll solve this puzzle. For example, have you already

jumped down the manhole beneath the bot in the wheelchair?

Please help. I've been stuck at the arcade terrace for days.

I dropped the bird, completed the puzzle and charged the wire. I unplugged the drill, pulled the wire and moved the ladder. When the cat jumps on the railing nothing happens. I can't fry the cat. I know the wire's live, I get a charge when I touch it.

Do I need to reload and start over?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
[seadog53 - It sounds like the only thing you may have missed is

tying the wire to the railing. Make sure the power is off first.

Good luck. - Walzar]

Reply

Walzar, thank you, that was it. Now I can fry the cat.

If you're stuck in the east reservoir and can't move the oil can because the play button won't depress:

You must move the can back to the middle, as the movement only tracks along the lines in the diagram. Change the arrow to point at 6:00, then press Play. You can now move the arrow to 4:00 to move it toward the dog -- press Play.
Squirt some oil to lure the dog, climb down the ladder and shoot the dog.
Hope this helps!

I loved this game! It was enjoyable and had great graphics! Just as wonderful as Samorost! Too bad we have to pay to play the full version... :[

I *love*, love, love the game. However, I need to use this walkthrough as I can't open the book. I've never been good at these kinds of games but after I don't know how many tries, I've given up on the hint book. I like the idea of making hints hard to get, but for me it's impossible. Otherwise the game would get full marks.

Reply

well i finished the game, was great fun. But i never managed to get to open the hint book lol.

has anyone actually succeeded in completing the hintbook game?

Hi! Please help - I think I need to start over D:

I have already completed the aracde and wanted to give the batteries to the guard. But instead of using the right route I went to the sewers again and am now stuck in the elevator :( I have no stick to give to the girl and she has no hose to give me the oil for the motor. ANY ideas? :(

@Zoe, did you know that while you're playing the hint book mini-game you can

Wonderful! Finished it in few hours and enjoyed it thouroughly :) The only part I had to look to the ingame walktrough was the one with

But the recension is wrong about if you can die in the game. You can if

I just wanted to say that Machinarium is on sale for $5 through August 12th, from Amanita's website only (not the Steam version or anything). And, it's the best $5 I've ever spent on a game. That is all.

pirateframe - it is a typo in the walkthrough,

you put a radio on the table, not a wrench

To the question earlier about what the floor 0 on the elevator is, and also to the question about if you can open the door in the middle of the stairs between the musicians and town square,

yes it is one and the same (can only open from the elevator)

Reply

Thanks for pointing out the typo. I've gone through the walkthrough and fixed a few little formatting issues here and there, along with the typo you mentioned.

For everyone having trouble with the

electromagnet, it doesn't work in the up-down-up-down-up-down order suggested. Once you get them in that order, continue on until the up buttons start where the down buttons were, the down buttons are where the up buttons were, and the space is back in the middle. Pull the lever, and you've got it.

Also, if anyone knows of a good way to convert .001 files to .mp3 files, that'd be great. I can't open it to 'Save As' with a new file extension and I have no idea what sort of file converter I should download. Mind you, if Amanita were to sell the soundtrack (including the band's music) on iTunes, I'd be more than happy to give them some extra support.

And much thanks to Sonic Lover for the walkthrough!

I am stuck (sort of) in the conservatory, where I am supposed to use a forked stick to open a pitcher plant, and extract a magnifying glass.
I have the stick, but when I touch the plant with it, the little guy just shrugs. I've checked out the hint, so I can really just leave the room, but I'm puzzled as to why the "hit the plant with the stick" doesn't do anything. It's the closed plant near the stop of the ladder/stairs, so I'm sure it's the right one.
Any help? What am I missing? Or is this just a bug and I should simply skip it? If the latter, what happens if I _really_ get stuck later?? Sigh...
It's probably something silly...

I, like so many others, find this game challenging but I am having particular trouble with the game at the electrical post ( the one where you have to make a path out of sliding tiles ). It would be great if someone would give me a tip ( besides telling me to put in the loose piece that the bird coughed up in last, because have already figured out that it makes the puzzle easier to move around). Please help me! I am severely frustrated right now!(; I loves y'all!

Having a real problem myself. I've gone through all the comments and even the walkthrough and feel like an idiot because apparently no one else is getting stuck where I am currently.

So I'm in the clock tower central area there and I want to turn the clock to get the girl robot to leave and the officer robot in the tower of course but I only have one crank to do it with and I can't do any of the codes except for the crescent moon one without a second crank -- and I can't take the first crank out of the wall to move it over to the other crank hole. Wtf am I missing? =/

Bought this recently through Steam and just finished it. It wasn't expensive, of course, but I still feel I have wasted my money. A lot of effort has been put into this game, creating a wonderful world and a fun story. All is set for a great adventure gaming experience. But then they had to ruin it all with those minigames. They are insanely hard. There are no tips for them. You can't skip them. They took me right out of the game. These periods of not enjoying the story and cursing at the computer (after losing in 5-in-a-row for the nth time, for example) grow longer and longer as the game proceeds. After all was done, instead of enjoyment at the completed storyline, I felt relief that the ordeal was over.

The way the characters interact with the world is Amanita's strong point. Stick to that, please.

Would have given this a 5 but the minigames drop that to 2.

I bought the ipad version for this and I am quite happy with the graphics, puzzles and music.

I am quite confused though on a few puzzles and not sure what to do. For example, the puzzle where you are supposed to have the cat run on the electric charged fence. I got the cat to do that, he fries himself and I pick him up. The clue then shows you throwing him into the air. I throw him everywhere and he does not do anything so of course I can't get the next door to open.

Another one I can't figure out is where you give the rivets to the guy playing the saxaphone. I got them from the game in the bar and he puts them and starts playing. The clue shows that I was to give them to the bartender. How do you get an item back if you do something wrong? I am not sure why it would let me give them to the saxaphone guy if it was the wrong thing to do. Do I have to start the whole game over?

Lost and confused at the moment.

Have you tried looking in the walkthrough first? It's very helpful for getting unstuck...you can go back through your last few steps to make sure nothing was missed, also. Sometimes it may look like this puzzle must be the puzzle to solve, but it will turn out that another step or puzzle needs completion first. You shouldn't need to restart the game in any instance.

Just got the game and am having trouble trying to get the doll to the mole. Every time I stretch up the robot and then clock on the doll, the robot opens up its mouth and swallows the doll. I am trying to click on the doll and then on the mole when it twitches but nothing seems to help. Help! Appreciate any assistance.

Reply

M -
Your Robot will swallow all inventory items to keep safe until he's ready to use them.

To use the doll (or any inventory item), first select the item in your inventory (at the top left corner of your game screen). Next, click the spot where you want to use it.

So, for the doll, first "swallow" it. Then select it in your inventory and click on the mole.

~elle

P.S. make sure your screen dimensions are match the settings recommended by the game so the top portion of the screen is not hiding inventory from you.

If you're stuck in the east reservoir and can't move the oil can because the play button won't depress:

Excellent game and well worth $10.00. Graphics superb, amazing amount of detail in each scene but also in all kinds of incidental places like the projector slides or the book in the room under the fountain. Dark comedy of story line and environments fun. Puzzles challenging but not ridiculously hard. Some of the object locations were unnecessarily bizarre but then I actually laughed out loud when I figured out what to do at the top of the side of the building.

I hope there's going to be a sequel.

Hello wjguest, I have the same problem with the gun and plunger , I can't shoot the dog , how did you solve it please?

Reply

Hi Jan,

I just went back and tried this (warning: on a really old Macintosh version, so it might not be quite the same) and maybe the key thing you're missing is this:

The dog has to be on the near side of the barrels for you to be able to get it. Line up the oil tank so it can drop oil on the sidewalk where the dog is and drop a lot of oil there. This is a timed puzzle so you have to be kind of quick--after the dog has moved go down from the tower where you can control the oil dropper. Once you go down, use the plunger/gun on the dog while it's still on the other side of the oil. I did this from on top of the box and it automatically moved me into position to get the dog.

Hope this helped!
