Link Dump Fridays

DoraThis week's Link Dump Friday is for the irresponsible child in all of us. The little part of your brain that doesn't care how many people would get eaten, you would still totally own a dinosaur right this second if it were possible. The part of us that stares out the window at work and can't help but think it would be so cool if aliens were to land right now and start blowing things up. And of course, the part of us that enjoys selling milk and painting on massive canvasses in church. Here's to you, kid; stay gold.

  • Mine DropMine Drop - If you've ever wanted to drop a cross between a sheep, a hedgehog, and some swarovski crystals down a mine shaft, then this is the game for you, you weirdo. In this simple puzzle game, the goal is to remove the right terrain beneath your roly-poly friend to carry it safely to the exit without all that pesky "writhing in agony in a pit of lava" business. You know what a pain that is.
  • Dinosaur ZookeeperDinosaur Zookeeper - The best game about dinosaurs in an irresponsible zoo setting is Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. I'm sorry, it just is. Vlambeer's little simulation is still pretty cute, though. Avoid the bloody mistakes of your predecessor by trying to juggle each new dinosaur's space and neighbour restrictions, without your guests being messily devoured (or trampled) before nightfall. It's harder than it sounds, especially since it turns out triceratops are jerks. Man, why can't you be more like Tyrannosaurus?!
  • A Dog of FlandersA Dog of Flanders - For some reason, my first reaction to playing Minoto's point-and-click puzzle was to remember both the poem In Flanders Fields and Farley Mowat's "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be". Of course, both of those works of fiction are a bit light in the "screaming, sentient balloon" department, so I suppose Minoto has them beat there. Dog of Flanders also takes home the prize for "most misleading description of a pump handle, ever", so there's that as well.
  • UFOwnedUFOwned - If you belong to the X-Files generation, you probably already have a healthy distrust of aliens, and this arcade game isn't going to help much. Using the tools at your spaceship's disposal, your goal is to cause as much damage as you can to the hapless (but not helpless) city below. Why? Because you're an alien, and that's what aliens do when they're not being boring with Mel Gibson or making Donald Sutherland screech at us incomprehensibly.
  • Rescue a Chicken 2Rescue a Chicken 2 - A friend of mine raises a variety of chickens for show and for cuddles, and I could not be more thrilled. Despite being dirty, neurotic, and generally ill-fated without constant human intervention, chickens are pretty adorable and entertaining critters. So of course I'm willing to solve some physics puzzles to help them... even if that means ticking off what looks like every ticked off crow and owl that ever lived. But I'm sure it'll be fine. I mean... it's not like owls are secretly evil... right?

This is one of the few Minoto games that stumped me, but I eventually stumbled upon the answer by accident. I didn't realize

you could just DRINK the milk.

Dinosaur Zookeeper doesn't even pretend to give you half enough space to keep carnage & mayhem from happening. I guess that's the point, being an Adult Swim game, but I can't shake the feeling of "losing" whenever a critter or guest gets eaten, and so it takes some of the fun out.

Okay, I hate to be the one to point out the hilariously stereotypical engwish is funny flub... but did anyone else notice that it's a "Prastic Model"?

What was the

cat keychain

for in "A Dog of Flanders"?

Oh god, Triceratops ARE jerks, RAEGing into Stegosaurus pens and falling asleep, just to kill the Steggy before you can get out your gun and shoot him. But I guess that's the fun of the game.

Tips for Dinosaur Zookeeper -

Distances

How far apart do you have to keep

carnivores and herbivores

Triceratops and Stegosauri

so that they don't get mad and bust through their fences? Placing

a Para

between the

Tri/Steg

will NOT work.
Placing a

tree

between their enclosures WILL SOMETIMES work.

Electric Fences

Parasaurolophus can't survive the electric fence.
And neither can Velociraptor.
Or Pterodactyl.
It just makes Stegosaurus mad.
I don't know if it affects Triceratops.
It doesn't appear to be a factor in T-Rex happiness.
It might make Brachiosaurs madder than bumping into normal fences.

Enclosures

Carnivore

You can stick all of the carnivores (Velociraptor, Allosaurus, Pterodactyl, T-Rex) together. It doesn't appear to be a problem with happiness, but the little ones (Ptero and Raptor) might get accidentally killed. This can be a good thing near the end of the game (also placing Ptero/Veloci in electric fences), when you don't care as much about keeping them alive as you do winning the day.
Stick the Raptors in a personal 2x1 pen.

Herbivore

Triceratops and Stegosaurus HATE each other. Have them in opposite corners (and away from carnivores). They don't need to be in diagonal corners, if you build it right.
Brachiosauri need LARGE enclosures and don't mind having herbivores in their enclosure (I haven't put Pteros with them since Pteros are fine with carnivores). However, Tris need a SMALL (tiny!) enclosure so they don't get mad. If they are with the Brachs, have an enclosure within the Brach enclosure for them. Also, Stegs NEED a large enclosure. Just stick them with the Brachs. You can put the Tris next to the Paras.
Paras sometimes get stepped on by Brachs. That's why they are in a separate pen in my Dino Zoos.

Trees

ALWAYS get as many of the tree upgrades as you can.
1 Tree - Near the carnivore pen or the Stegosauri. If you followed my placement guidelines, this should remove half of your problem.
2 Trees - One in the carnivore pen and one in the Stegosaurus pen.
3 Trees - Carnivore, Stegosaurus, Triceratops if you followed my plan. Otherwise, make SURE you have trees near the Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pterodactyl (least important), Brachiosaurus pens.

Challenges

Bumpy Ride - "Have the car crash into 3 or more fences today." This is quite easy. Build 3 ranks of wooden fences on EACH path (you don't know which will be used). I have seen this 2 or 3 times.
Cut the Power Bill - "Have no electric fences in the park today." This one is also easy. Don't build any. If you have some in existence, build over them with regular fences.
Dino Hunter - "." This is a fairly safe one. You just have to kill a *big* dinosaur (T-Rex or Brachiosaurus) with your gun.
Fence Commercial - "Make sure no fences are destroyed all day long!" This is HARD to do later on; larger dinosaurs crush fences without really trying to.
Material Shortage - "Do not build any new fences today." I simply ignore this one.
PETA Inspection - "Have no Dinosaur deaths today." I have only seen this one once. It is HARD in the endgame.
There are other challenges! Like have no more than 2 visitor deaths.

Lastly:

Apparently your visitors are so stupid that they will walk into an electric fence. Either that, or I used my gun instead of the revive. Those icons look too similar. That is a problem.

INCEPTION has become a meme.

Enclosure within an enclosure = PROTECTION.

Spoiler within a spoiler = ???.

Also, I am an idiot.

Somehow my visitors are dying as soon as they enter! I don't understand it...

Mine Drop - I think the animal is supposed to be an armadillo.
Armadillo + swarovski crystals + mine shaft = Mine Drop?

I wish we could rate these. I'd give Mine Drop a 1 for poor hit detection. I can't get the blocks/gears to activate most of the time!

[There is a rating widget on all games hosted at JIG, which MineDrop is one of them. -Jay]

SkylerF: I noticed that

you can use it on the key to attach it and turn it from a glowing key to a normal key.

What happens when you do that is

absolutely nothing; you just attach the keychain to the key, the key turns normal, and nothing else in teh game changes.

Thanks for the link dump JIG :D

@SkylerF : Yes it is an armadillo. As for hit detection, we and our testers don't have such issue so we don't have idea about why it happening. Though some people says there is compatibility issue between flash games and google chrome browser...
