DoraHood: Episode OneA small town in the middle of nowhere claims to suffer a witch, and a lone rider with some special kills and a whole lot of facial hair has been called in to deal with it, but is everything as it seems? Hood: Episode One, the first installment in a new point-and-click adventure series by Alice is Dead co-creator Hyptosis. Just click on the red arrows to navigate your way around the town and speak to people to discover where their "witch" has gone. (Don't expect everyone to be thrilled to see you.) Items you pick up appear in your inventory and some can also be combined, and since the cursor doesn't change you'll want to be nosy and click everywhere.

Play the entire Hood series:
Hood: Episode 1Hood: Episode 2Hood: Episode 3Hood: Episode 4

Hood has Hyptosis' signature style all over it, from the imaginative artwork and atmospheric film grain effect to the penchant for eerie, slightly-off-kilter musical tracks. There are a few minor issues that feel like they hold the game back from really reaching its full potential; the writing is a bit stiff, navigating dialogue can get repetitive since the game doesn't remember your choices, having to manually close narrative windows is a little annoying, and some items you need to pick up are small and nondescript enough (or just not even visible onscreen) that pixel-hunting can be an issue. As a re-telling of the classic tale, however, it definitely gets your intention; the game does a great job about suggesting a bigger, stranger world with its own complex mythos in just a few snippets of text. Unfortunately, the game is quite short, but fortunately Hyptosis has stated he plans to release sequels very quickly, so with any luck you won't have to wait long to get more answers to the big fat cliffhanger at the end of this installment. Despite its flaws, Hood: Episode One is intriguing, creepy, and satisfyingly weird in all the right ways, and fans of Hyptosis and creepy fairytales in general will want to give this one a peek.

"having to manually close narrative windows is a little annoying, and some items you need to pick up are small and nondescript enough (or just not even visible onscreen)"

Good God, this. Either make the items clear to the viewer or remove that awful feature so we don't have to close windows while searching for items. Scratch that, remove the windows ANYWAY.

It's interesting so far so let's hope he does manage to release the sequels fast.

Reply

Looking for the hangover cure.
Why are the items hidden apparently at random, and with NO visual clues? Why is the mushroom under THAT bush, and not any of the others? Why was the egg in that certain place, that I clicked purely by chance? Still haven't found the damned cricket.
The story is interesting, I even have a vague idea of who I think is pulling all the strings, but the gameplay design is sorely lacking. There doesn't seem to have been much thought put into how it would eventually play.

Reply

wow...very short indeed.

Reply

I keep hearing about how that

cricket

is somewhere

underneath a bed

.

The only place I've been with a

bedroom where a bed might be

is locked. Any help finding either?

Reply

@Maude Buttons

It's in the top room of the house belonging to the father and daughter. The one you refer to when you say the door is locked.

I swear I clicked around there and never found it. Now I have, but only now that you gave me the hint to look there. A very poor hotspot decision.

Also: WHY WOULD A CRICKET BE THERE?
Totally unintuitive.

Reply

Maude Buttons

There is another bed

upstairs in the girl's father's house. It isn't locked. I found the cricket easily but it just said "That's a dead cricket" so apparently I am not as far as you. The arrow is just above the bookshelves.

Reply

where is the sparrow egg?

Reply

Does it just end on a screen that says,

"I searched the forest looking for that the demon described."

? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do something else then.

Reply

where is the knife again?

Reply

The hangover cure was incredibly annoying to find

just click random bushes... and under the girl's bed which you couldn't click before. Oh, you'd also need to get a "base" which is just a bottle.

and I didn't like how you couldn't make some things until you progressed to a certain part despite no reason why you can't. I enjoyed the atmosphere like that of Alice, but it really didn't have as much of a "fairy tale" kind of feeling twisted or not. For someone not familiar with the tale, save the diary, it'd appear very much a "stock" fantasy than anything twisted/horror like.

Still, waiting to see what the ep. will entail.

@Lucie
When you get that message

you have to click in the arrow which is in the top right, and the story continues.

Sorry for my bad english :S

Reply

@Lucie - There's an arrow at the top right corner that continues the end of the game's story. It's really hard to see.

Honestly there's not much about this game that is good. There are essentially two "puzzles" that aren't just wandering around to make everyone appear in the right place and talk to them. The dialogue is awkwardly written, the interface with the dialogue boxes needing to be closed is annoying, and the mindless clicking to find items is boring and frustrating.

Reply

how do i light the pumpkin???

Reply

I made a

jack-o-lantern

but I still can't find the egg, mushroom, or hangover cure!

Reply

It was while randomly clicking in every scene looking for a dead cricket that I had the thought "Whose definition of fun is this?"

Thankfully, I found out where I could find the cricket eventually, but by that point the damage had already been done. This game is a stinker.

I barely read the review, click the link, and went, "Oh, a follow-up to Alice is Dead? Cool." Because really it's the exact same style. Not that this is a bad thing, it's just that one would hope the designers learned from the mistakes of Alice is Dead and improved. Apparently not. Though I do like that this story, if it continues, seems to be pointing in the direction of a less ambiguously bizarre and sudden ending.

Also if someone could get a walkthrough up it would be much appreciated.

Where in the blue blazes is that sparrow egg?!?

Reply

Where is the bloody knife?

Reply

Hyptosis really does put some interesting twists on already-twisted tales, that's for certain...definitely looking forward to the rest of this series like I was with the Alice is Dead trilogy.

Reply

Sparrow Egg

is on the left side of the the porch, on the ground by the stairs- of the last building on the path before you go to the father and daughter's house. it's the building with the young man who says red riding hood is not a witch

Reply

oh, and the CRICKET---

If you read the diary in the girl's room, you will find a clue about it's whereabouts.

Locations of the ingredients for the sobriety potion:

Dead Cricket

Have you read Cameron's diary yet?

The cricket is under the bed in Cameron's room (upstairs in the rich man's house.

Black Mushroom

The mushroom is under the bush to the left of the front door of the rich man's house.

Sparrow's Egg

The egg is in the long grass/bushes next to the porch of Ettlethorne's house.

ps Sorry for the poorly worded explanations.

Reply

One more ingredient for the potion:

Tonic water is on the shelf behind the bar. Take the ingredients back the the alchemist and he will mix the potion for you.

Reply

Locations of Jack-o-lantern items; under spoilers if people wish to discover and find the items on their own.

Pumpkin

On the porch of the first house you come to (Ettlethorne's house) after leaving the village. Fairly easy to find.

Knife

In a toolbox in the alchemist's shop, in the lower left corner.

Candle

In the second house you come to after leaving the village (Cameron's father's house). It will be on the right side of the mantle above the fireplace. Hardest for me to find.

Reply

Pumpkin and ward:

Use the knife on the pumpkin. The pumpkin is by the boy's house, the one who tells you she is not a witch. I tried lighting it all over the place. Don't bother. Go into the empty house. Click above the fireplace. You will find a warding candle. Use it on the jack-o-lantern.

Reply

for the life of me, i've clicked everywhere in those bushes next to the stairs, and everywhere under that bush to the left of the door...no egg, no mushroom. should i just give up? can anyone be more specific or is it just a serious pixel hunt?

I need episode 2! I can't wait!

JIGuest,

Have you spoken with the alchemist in the shop? You will not be able to pick up any of the ingredients to the sobering potion, even if you're clicking in the right place, until after you've spoken with CourSid.

I love the music! Does anyone know where it's from?

Reply

I've been using a mac, and this game is not progressing. When I go back to talk to someone, they say the exact same thing as before. Any idea why?

Reply

Great writing, art and scenario.

Awful game.

Remix and repeat, please.

Reply

I would really appreciate it if JiG posts would stop having images from later in the game, unless they significantly change gameplay. That spoiler might be the only highlight in the game for some players, and I've seen full-out solutions posted before. That just significantly reduces the pleasure of playing.

I do appreciate that you guys work to make the screenshots are visually appealing and recognizable, but it's seriously not worth it.

[Shudog, I apologise. I was trying to select a visually interesting screenshot that wasn't just different interiors, and I didn't think that the image I'd chosen was particularly spoiler-y without the text, but I see your point. I've since replaced it with a new image, and can only offer my apologies and allow you to ruin the plot of one game of your choosing for me in the future. I can take it! -Dora.]

I really wanted to like this game more than I did. I thought the artwork was great and don't mind that it was a short game, but I kind of hate pixel hunting, especially when you have to revisit all the pixels because spots only become active at certain points in the game. I think if further episodes have a changing cursor and descriptions that close on their own, this series will be so much more enjoyable.

Oh, and I have to say that I appreciate it when nominal clues are given in the screenshot for the games. Often, they let me know if I'm going in the right direction and rarely give anything spoilery away.

Reply

Game could be better. Love the storyline, but the gameplay needs work.

Reply

i thought this game was ok but alice is dead was better i thought.

Reply

Ugh, why do these atmospheric games have such poorly written dialogue? If the authors are going to use their writing skills as a selling point they should at least get a post-secondary education.

Pixel hunting is unforgivable.

Reply

I am trying to find the hangover cure.. I still can not find the egg nor the mushroom. But, I am getting close. What is the pumpkin really for? Does it really ward of evil spirits in the forest? I wonder who the girl really is.

Reply

Ok the cricket thing dosent make any sense unless you read the girls diary. so do that.

Lemon Sparkles July 28, 2014 12:51 PM

I don't know if this was just me, but I had to go through every single option of dialogue in order to progress through the game. It was good, but very frustrating to find everything.
