Weekday Escape

GrinnypSo a friend has called you over to visit his art studio. Are you going because you are both friends? Are you going because you appreciate art? Or are you going on the off chance that he has turned his studio into a classic escape-the-room game? Well, if you're Tesshi-e (and wouldn't it be nice to be Tesshi-e?), it's the latter. Welcome to Escape from the Art Studio and welcome to Weekday Escape!

Escape from the Art StudioWhat would it be like to actually live in Tesshi-e's world? Seriously, a world in which everyone you encounter, friends, relatives, co-workers, bosses, even complete strangers do nothing but modify places so that they are a tricky puzzle to figure your way out of (not like in real life, as these things would probably involve charges being filed). How cool would that be? Or how inconvenient, depending on your tolerance for exploring and puzzle solving.

As always navigation is by bars at the sides and bottom of the screen, and the controls are handy and include a mute button and a save button. The scenery is, of course, gorgeous and definitely makes you want to slow down and take your time while exploring this amusing little space. Everything looks so realistic you could almost be there. Well, almost, because frankly no art studio that ever existed could be this neat, tidy, and organized. Trust me, I went to art school.

Escape from the Art Studio has a nicely balanced mix of exploration, puzzles, and use of found objects. Even better, the puzzles have become more unique for a Tesshi-e escape, especially the little robots with the moving arms. These escapes continue to evolve, rarely falling back on cliché d, "I've seen this before" puzzles. That is one of the reasons that Tesshi-e escapes are so entertaining.

Has Tesshi-e found that changing cursor? Well, no, not yet. But with such an uncluttered space (seriously unrealistic for an art studio), there's not a lot of pixel hunting to be found. Some use of combined objects, but no construction. Of course everything is made so much easier with the new English translations. And yes, Virginia, there is a happy coin escape as well.

Escape from the Art Studio isn't in Neutral's league, but it is an amusing and fun little romp through room escaping funland. Something to awaken your escaping spirits and beguile your little gray cells as you wander around to the rhythm of a very familiar tune. That's the wonder of Tesshi-e escapes; they keep getting better and better! Start your engines, guys, it's time for your mid-week break.

HINT-THROUGH
A series parsed hints to push you in the right direction.

Three Robots

Extension Cord Location:

It's stuck in the top draw of the under-window cabinet. You'll need something that you can stick in that drawer to open it.

Find the pallet knife and use it on the drawer.

Puzzle Hints:

To get the first clue to this puzzle, you must find some oil paints....

When you open the right side of the under-window cabinet, you will find a box of oil paints; give them a look-over...

Each color has a number...

Notice something about each robot...

BLUE - OLIVE GREEN - RED

7 - 5 - 2

.

Under the Window Cabinet

FOUR DIGIT LETTER CODE, to open right-side doors:

The first clue for this is on a piece of paper in the bottom drawer....

floweR - mOuntain - sEa - fruitS
What have you seen, looking around the room that fits that description?
Notice also the capital letters? Where they are located in the words?

Each of the four paintings (click on the sunflower painting to find a painting of the sea) has a word on it, so make the connections...

floweR = yelloW
mOuntain = cAmpfire
sEa = sKy
fruitS = orangE

W - A - K - E

HOW to OPEN TOP DRAWER:

Get the pallet knife after opening the right side of the cabinet. Use the pallet knife to "un-jam" the top drawer.

KEY for the MIDDLE DOOR:

Solve the "Unique Object" puzzle.

.

"UNIQUE OBJECT"

Batteries Location:

After you solve the three robots puzzle, you can use the pliers on the closet door. Inside you will find a PH screwdriver. Use it on the Opal sculptures (under the three robots) to take its batteries.

Solving the Puzzle:

Inside the above-mentioned closet is some turpentine. Put turpentine on tissue. Use it to clean a stain under the fruit bowl.

Next, after you have put the batteries in the unique object, you'll find a transparent paper. Put the two together.

The clue you get should help you...

Know the order in which to press the four buttons...

far left - far right - second from right - second from left - second from left - second from right

.

Closet

Opening It:

Use the pliers that you get from the three robots

Key for Panel inside Closet:

You'll need two things. One you get after opening this closet...

Pick up the wire you pried off. Fiddle with it to make a hook.

One you get after you open the right-side doors of the cabinet under the window....

A pot of water.

Examine the vase on the left side of the cabinet. There is something inside but you can't reach it...

Use the water, then the hook to get it

.

Panel Inside Closet

Do you have something that fits in one of those four shapes? Try examining everything in your inventory...

Look in the box of oil colors.

"A part for something?" Use this shape in the first slot of the puzzle. Now, how to find the numbers for this code...

Notice that each shape has a certain number of sides?

6 - 4- 0 - 5

.

EXIT KEY

After solving the shapes puzzle inside the closet panel....

Use the wrench on the vase's base. Get the knife. Hmmm... what should we cut?

Being inside this room all this time makes me hungry....

Go back to bowl of fruit, get apple, cut it open. Voila! The key!

.

But don't stop .... perhaps there is a happy coin!

Remember that "part for something" had a cap you couldn't take off? Maybe it's time to try again?

Use the wrench on the "part for something" and push the button. Now you have the Happy Coin and can exit.

. The End .

Walkthrough for Escape from the Art Studio

Right Cabinet door

Turn right. click on the left of desk/cabinet and open the bottom drawer. Take the memo and mention the capital letters.

Back up. Facing the desk/cabinet, click on the right. It looks like we have to insert some letters to open the cabinet doors. Maybe we have to use the capital letters from the memo? Let's try...

Nope, they don't work. Let's move on. Back up and turn right. Click on the painting. We see a bowl of FRUITS and the word ORANGE. Hmmm.. Go back and click on the actual bowl of fruits. Click again and we see a stain that it doesn't come off... Ok... Back up.

Turn right again and click on the painting lying on the floor. A painting of a FLOWER(s) and YELLOW written on it. Click on the painting. There's another painting behind, of a SEA and the word SKY. I think we're on to somenthing.. Back up.

Turn right and click on the painting. A MOUNTAIN and the word CAMPFIRE written on it. Lets see now. So far we know that:

PAINTING---------------MEMO

FLOWER = YELLOW = floweR
MOUNTAIN = CAMPFIRE = mOuntain
SEA = SKY = sEa
FRUITS = ORANGE = fruitS

Have you figured out the analogies? :)

floweR = YELLOW
mOuntain = CAMPFIRE
sEa = SKY
fruitS = ORANGE

Now let's go to the red desk/cabinet and insert those letters (WAKE)

Insert the letters W-A-K-E and open the cabinet doors. Take the palette knife and the Oil Colors. Back up.

Left Cabinet Door

Facing the cabinet, click on the left drawers. Use the palette knife to open the top drawer. Take the extension cord and a tissue paper. Go back.

Robots

Turn left. Click on the top of the table and then click on the left of the robot-thingy, remove the side cover, take out the cord and use the extension cord to power up the robots.

Facing the robots, click on every single one of them and notice the color of their eyes (Blue, Olive Green, Red). Also, according to how many times you press each one, the number on the top of their heads change. Let's take a look at our inventory..

Click on the Oil Colors and then the "About Item" button. Open the box, click on the right of the gray color and take the metal part. Also, click on the box lid to turn it over. Numbers and colors! Exactly what we needed!

So, for the color Blue the number is 7, for Olive Green the number is 5 and for Red is 2. (752). Facing the robots, click the first one 7 times, the second 5 times and the third 2 times. Voila! Take the pliers Back up and turn left.

Closet, Tulip-Shaped object

Click on the closet doors. Use the pliers to remove the wire. Turn back, take the wire lying on the floor and open the doors. Take the blue bottle. Click on the bottom left corner of the closet. Take the screwdriver. Back up and turn right.

Click on the middle of the table and use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the illuminating object. Take the batteries. Turn right.

Click on the right of the cabinet, on the top. While facing the tulip-shaped object, click on its right. Insert the batteries and face the object again. Take the paper. Notice that at the bottom of the object there are some buttons we can press. Back up and turn right.

Click on the table with the bowl of fruits. Lift the bowl. From your inventory, use the tissue paper and the blue bottle to get a tissue with some turpentine. Remove the stain. Hmmm... Use the paper you got from the tulip-shaped object to fulfill the gaps of the missing letters. We get the words:

FIRST FOURTH THIRD SECOND
FIFTH SIXTH

Have you figured out where we can/should/must use this clue?

Let's try the tulip-shaped object! Turn left.

Facing the tulip-shaped object, we see 4 buttons. This puzzle is a little bizarre (not difficult). Although the first row of words (FIRST FOURTH THIRD SECOND) refers to the buttons themselves and in which order they should be pressed (1-first button, 2-fourth button etc...) the second row (FIFTH SIXTH) refers to the fifth and sixth press of a button. Also, the fact that the word "FIFTH" and "SIXTH" is underneath the second and third word respectively, means something.
So, after this small analysis, we have to press the buttons in the following order:

First, fourth, third, second, second, third.

Get the key. Back up.

Glass bottle

Facing the cabinet, click on the middle and open the cabinet doors with the key we found earlier. Take the kettle and turn back. Click on the top left of the cabinet. Use the kettle and fill the glass bottle with water. However, you still can't reach the thing that's inside. Anything we can use from our inventory?

Click on the wire and use the pliers to bent it. Now take the J-shaped wire and take the thing out of the glass bottle. When you take it out, click on it to turn it into a key. Back up.

Closet (cover)

Go into the closet and use the key we found earlier to open the small locked cover, on the right. Now we see a well-known puzzle. The number of the corner points of the shapes gives us the numbers we're looking for to solve this puzzle. So, the numbers are: 6405. Turn back, come out of the closet :p and turn right 2 times.

Ending

Facing the cabinet, click on the glass bottle on the left and use the wrench to unscrew the bolts. Take the knife. Back up and turn right.

Click the bowl of fruits. Use the knife to cut open the apple. Take the key.

Use the heart-shaped key and escape!

I think there is another ending, but i haven't found it yet. If I do, I'll post it.

Happy coin Walkthrough

After you enter the closet, open the locked cover and the take the wrench. Then put the metal part in the first hole, remove the cap and take the Happy coin from the same gap you took the wrench.

Stuck. And it was going so well, too.

I have plugged in the robots, and I don't know what to do next.

I also suspect that the tightly shut bottle has something I use with the tissue to clean the stain off the table?

Reply

Although...

That bottle looks suspiciously like a screwdriver handle.

Reply

Ok, past all that, but stuck again.

Don't know what to make of what's written on the table, and my J-shaped wire isn't much help either.

That wasn't so bad.

All I have to say is

Sweet red bean dessert?

i really like this, the perfect casual pace... except i'm stuck with

pliers, screwdriver, turpentine, tissue, knife, paint, note, and some weird part.

I've used them all except

the weird part because i can't get the cap off

and ideas?

still stuck :(
@andrew

about the robots, when you zoom in on the door to the left of the table, there is an outlet on the wall...

if you need a bigger hint:

you have to plug the robot thing in by finding where its cord is and finding something else in the room

Some help please..

I've solved the letter combination lock and the three robot puzzle.

I have in my inventory:

memo, paint box, unopened turps bottle, pliers, wire bent in a J shape, palette knife, tissue paper, gold thing with tight lid.

I know:

The stain wont budge and the device above the letter combination lock needs batteries.

So where to from here?

I am stuck after clearing the stain beneath the fruit which, by the way, you clear by

using turpentine from the closet and a tissue from the top left drawer in combination

but know not what to do next. Is this an anagram? A cipher? Regardless, I have no clue as to how it should be interpreted.

Easily one of Tesshi-e's best escape games!
Too bad it took me AGES to work out the

4 shapes puzzle. I still believe that a circle has ONE side: the outside! Not zero! This kept me stumped for soooo long! :P

Also I ended up finding the happy coin by mistake, or maybe it was just easier this time.

Anyway, great game! Can't wait for more.

Good game. But if they knew their math

A circle would represent 1, not 0. It has one side. A line has two sides. 0 should be represented by an empty space.

I the defendant states it's about corners, not about sides, let him explain how he would depict the numbers 1 and 2

Still digging the jazzy laid back escape music! I mean, it's not the best soundtrack for a game ever and it's not something I'd listen to on its own, but somehow it just feels right, and for these free productions you can't complain. I've been getting a little more into Tesshi-es games... I don't know why I had such a prejudice against them before. I think I just preferred stylishly animated to good, but noticably fake CGI stuff.

Though I've seen a couple really good realistic ones - I wish I could remember, but the one with the almost entirely empty looking room, but for a chair bolted to the floor and a suitcase... anyone remember what that was called? I think it was "someone's name" Room or Escape, but I can't remember anymore. I need to make better use of the "favorites" interface here.

@Swami:

I've actually seen a few games where circle meant "0" and I don't really understand it. But it's gotten to the point where I realized I should check for that first instead of starting with "1" so I wouldn't have to click 9 times just to get it back to zero. What does that say about me?

For those of you having trouble with spoiler tags, you might want to try updating the language files and cookies preferences for your browser.

Jay's support page (he gives link a couple posts above mine) has a comment section... maybe someone there can help, too ?

But here are some tips on how to through escape/puzzle games without a walkthrough...

1. Map each step you take. I draw a crude sketch of each wall with arrows pointing to where I found information, items, and such.

2. Leave ample space around your notes to add more notes and to keep track of possible solutions.

3. Examine every pixel, on every side of any object you encounter or item that you pick up. Yes, pixel hunting... I've actually learned to like it.

4. Keep track of the message, if you're given one, the game gives when you do anything or touch anything. (Tesshi-E's games are awesome in this way, they often hint what you need to look for or do).

5. Try to combine every object, and use every tool everywhere, even if you don't think it would work.

6. Sometimes you can't solve a puzzle until you've completed certain other steps. Such is the case in this Tesshi-E game, too... you can't pick up a (certainsomethingsomething) until you have the object you need to use on it. So if you crossed that item off your list earlier because you couldn't examine it, then you might end up stuck.

Hope that helps :)

I don't know about you, but when I count, I usually start with one, not zero. Because of that I was forced to look at the walkthrough.

For those wondering how a 1 or 2 would be represented if you're counting by corners rather than sides:

1 = teardrop shape. One corner, all else is curves.
2 = rainbow shape, with both ends tapered. (That's how you stick 'em in the ground so they don't fall over.)

This is an odd one... I found the happy coin before I was finished with the main escape! Usually Tesshi-e won't let you find it until you've opened the door...

Awesome escape except for the

screwdriver pixel hunt

4 shrooms for making me consult the hint through.

Right to the end, I was expecting to use the painting equipment to finish the fruit painting. Even after I opened the door, I thought maybe the end credits would involve finishing the painting. I'm sure I'll eventually recover from the disappointment.

@barbara: I kept thinking we'd have to make a painting on the empty canvas in the closet.

Favorite thing about Tesshi-e games: "OH! Actually, there's nothing there."

Y'know, the more I play these games, the more I start to think Tesshi-e is a woman. In this and a couple of other of Tesshi's escapes seem to involve a boyfriend. Escape from Restaurant Minshio in particular comes to mind, since the backstory on that seems to indicate a date where she intends to be the trapper, only for her plan to backfire.

*shrug* Just musing.
