Life Quest 2: Metropoville

Grinnyp12-step programs may be for those who have addictions and whatnot, but there are also 12-step programs designed to help build someone's life, rather than rebuild it. Take the thriving metropolis of Metropoville, for example. Their equivalent of workforce services has a lovely 12-step program designed specifically for newcomers to town to help them achieve all that they wish, from the perfect job to the perfect house and the perfect spouse with the perfect pet and the perfect 2.6 children. Sounds good, you say? Well, all you need to do is play Life Quest 2: Metropoville, the awesome simulation game by BigFish Games Studios and pretty soon you, too, can realize this version of the American Dream.

Life Quest 2: MetropovilleCreate your perfect avatar to begin your life's journey in this sparkling, nearly crime-free city, a task that can take a bit of time as there are multiple options for gender, skin tone, body shape, and hair. Once you begin you will travel (on foot) to the help center and talk to the counselor there, who will offer you a wheel of 12 different steps to the perfect life. Each of the 12 steps has 3 main goals to accomplish, and you can choose to compete against another character (which will earn more money) or just finish in your own time. You begin with a base amount of Intelligence, Practicality, and Charm, and improving on each will open new doors to opportunity as your life progresses. Travel to work (to earn money and experience), to restaurants to eat (so as not to starve), sign up for classes at the local college (which help improve your stats), to the local gym (physical training which increases your stamina), and a nice variety of entertainment and leisure options to round out your day.

Life Quest 2: Metropoville is a sequel to the popular Life Quest which released 2 years ago. This time around you're not competing with your high school friends (i.e. bitterest rivals) to achieve a goal before they do so you can brag about it at the reunion. No, Life Quest 2 is much more high minded. Well, sort of. Arriving in town (after a hilarious intro film that is not to be missed) you are set upon your path by the helpful help center counselor. Rather than having goals completely spoon fed to you by the game, you are offered a choice of which path to pursue, along with the option of having the game assign one for you if you're really undecided. Find a job, a place to live, make friends, go to school, date, get married, have kids, go on vacation, and generally have a fun time as you work your way towards your ultimate life goals.

Life Quest 2: MetropovilleAnalysis: Life Quest 2: Metropoville is not a very complex sim, although it has added a new layer to the original game with the friendship aspects. What it has though is amazingly addictive gameplay and attitude to spare, from the amusing friends dialogue to the cutesy artwork and animations, and most especially with the snarky asides that come from the workers at various locations, from the disinterested clothes store clerk (who goes off-shift in 10 minutes and would appreciate it if you would bug someone else, thank you so very much) to the "hanging onto her sanity by a fingernail" daycare worker, each character is unique and fun. These touches keep the daily grind of work-study-exercise-shop from becoming tedious as the player works towards each set goal.

Life Quest 2: MetropovilleThe friendship aspect can take as much or as little of the game as you want, depending upon how you interact with the floating characters who inhabit the city. Chatting with them at each location takes very little time and can slowly build a relationship, but you also have the option of going out on activities with them (choose wisely, grasshopper, taking a vegan to the local greasy-spoon diner can completely demolish a budding friendship), calling them on the phone, and even dating (and marrying) if you want to spare the time, and you will in later levels where you need to get married or run for mayor.

Life Quest 2: Metropoville is pretty open ended, even after all of the in-game goals have been accomplished. You can continue to inhabit this bizarre and amusing world, have more kids, make more money, go back and become expert on every job, get more college degrees, or just futz around and have fun with the wacky characters. The more you play the more there appears to explore, including the shops, the hockey rink, or the local amusement park with its wide variety of rides. Hours and hours of entertainment await those who enjoy living their life through avatars, especially when they're as cute as the ones living in Metropoville.

Life Quest 2:Metropoville

Gameplay

Starting and Stats

  • Upon choosing to start the game, a character will appear. You can choose between a male and a female.

  • You can change the outfit, body type, hair color, lip color, eye color, and skin color of your character. You can also change the face: each face has a different hair style.

  • For all colors there are premade options, and there is a custom color option where you can choose all manner of hues to suit your personal preferences.

  • On your main display screen:

    • On the left side of your screen is a grey bar. This is where alerts will pop up, and you will need to either click on them or go to sleep to make them disappear.

    • A picture of balloons means there's a sale, and when you click on it, the caption will tell you where the sale is at and for how much of a discount.

    • A telephone means that someone is calling you. A person calling either wants to tell you about a sale going on, mention they would like to spend time together, comment on the Knuckleheads game performance, or comment on how long you will stay happy after going on a vacation.

    • A briefcase means you've achieved expert level in a profession.

    • A briefcase with a star means you've unlocked a new profession.

    • A building means you've unlocked a new building.

    • A syringe is a sign that there's sickness going around the city.

    • A newspaper means that either someone has become mayor, a person has invented something, someone has won a Knobel Prize, or to announce the cure of the sickness running rampant in the city.

  • On the bottom of your screen are tabs to leave an area, to access a different option whether between visit or work, or to go between different stores when you're in the mall. There is also a campaign tab which will allow you to spend time campaigning to become Mayor.

  • At the top right:

    • The Happiness Meter, which will decrease when you have to work and will increase when you relax, go on a ride at the amusement park, or eat.

    • The Time Unit Meter: Everything uses time units, whether it's going to work, driving from one place to another, learning, or even relaxing. Be sure to pay attention to this.

    • A circle with a fork and knife will always be to the right of the Happiness Meter. If it's red, it means you're hungry, so make sure to eat. If it's green, then that means you have eaten. You have to eat once every day. If you forget to eat, you will be penalized Time Units.

    • There is also a bar that shows how much money you have. Everything costs money, and each job you can get will have varying levels of pay.

  • At the bottom right of the screen are your stats. There is intelligence, charm, and practicality.

    • Intelligence will help you become an expert at your job faster and will also help you complete courses faster as well.

    • Charm will help in relationships and will also help you become Mayor.

    • Practicality will help you complete do-it-yourself projects faster.

  • All three stats will determine which jobs you can get and which college courses you can take.

Other Information

  • When you run out of time units, that means the day is done and you must go to sleep.

  • There are bonuses and penalties for activites during the day for your sleep, and this determines how much time you'll receive for the next day.

  • Having pets will give you bonus time, as will having furniture in the house. Going to sleep early will also give you a bonus, and so does having a family.

  • Going to sleep without having eaten or going to sleep while not being happy will penalize you, and you'll lose time for your next day.

  • With your jobs: You can become an expert with each job by working a specific amount of times. Some jobs will offer promotions once you reach expert in a lower position.

  • Becoming an expert will gain you a 10% increase in your salary.

  • Some jobs will have a dress code so if you wear the appropriate outfit you will earn extra money.

  • Having a vehicle will save you time units as you go through the city. When you buy a new automobile, it will replace whichever one you have already. You do not get to have multiple cars.

  • In your living quarters you have the option to sleep, relax, decorate, or change clothes. When you move into a better place, you will then be given the option to rent or buy. When you get a house, you will be given the option to upgrade.

  • It's better to wait to have children and marriage at the end of the game because you have to devote time in the daycare in order to pick your children up. This would conflict greatly with getting many of the other challenges completed.

  • You earn more time units by completing exercise classes.

  • Taking college courses and exercise classes increases your overall stats.

  • At a certain point in the game you will be able to start talking with people in the buildings. You will develop friendships this way. Once this occurs, a phone option will appear, allowing you to call the people you meet and ask them to do activities.

  • Taking vacations will give you a certain amount of days of happiness. This means that if you take a trip that gives you five days of happiness, your happiness meter will never be depleted.
