Analogue: A Hate Story

DoraThere's a ship floating in deep space that's been lost for thousands of years; the Mugunghwa was a generation ship that was supposed to establish the first interstellar colony, but contact was lost and it had disappeared. Until now. You've been sent to board it and find out what happened to it by combing through the logs of its crew, dead these long centuries but still simmering with familial and political drama. Analogue: A Hate Story is a visual novel from indie developer Christine Love that is by turns touching, funny, dark, and introspective. Are some crimes unforgivable? What makes people believe the horrible things they do are done for the right reasons? What does it really mean to be human... and to love someone?

Analogue: A Hate StorySince you're stuck on your own spaceship, the entire game is presented through a computer interface similar that allows you to talk to either Mute or Hyun-ae, the two AIs still active on the Mugunghwa, read the logs left behind by the crew, or access a terminal to execute more complex commands. The core of the gameplay, however, revolves around the text of the dead crew and discussing it with your two companions. Ultimately, your goal is to find out what happened to everyone on board, but Mute and Hyun-ae won't be satisfied until they feel you've really learned the truth, and that's a lot harder than it sounds since they both seem to have conflicting ideas as to what that is.

You can only have one AI active at a time, but once you've reached a certain point early on you can swap between them freely in the terminal. Show the logs you read to each of them to get insight, more messages, and find out more about them, which is more important than you might think. From time to time, they'll ask you a question, and your response will influence their opinion of you which can direct the game towards any one of five different endings. Just remember that you can right-click the screen to open the options menu and save or load your game at any time.

Analogue: A Hate StoryAnalysis: Christine Love is a fantastic writer. The world revealed bit by bit is both fascinating and troubling, and is practically begging for some sort of sequel if only to expand a little more on the universe. There's so much left unexplained that people more interested in science fiction than character development might wind up frustrated, but I would call the story more tantalising than annoying in that regard. It's something you really want to know more about, but it isn't the star of the show; that would be the characters, and not just our two leading ladies. Mute and Hyun-ae are drastically different personalities with more layers to them than you might think based on first impressions. Talking to them and seeing them open up bit by bit in ways that even seem to surprise themselves is extremely rewarding.

Make no mistake, however; this is most definitely plot-focused rather than gameplay-focused. Most of the gameplay focuses simply on reading, showing every bit of text to Hyun-ae and Mute, and occasionally answering a question... with the exception of one clever puzzle-like timed sequence towards the end of the game. Whether this is a bad thing depends entirely on you. Your responses to Mute and Hyun-ae are extremely limited in a way that may frustrate those of us who are less "black and white" and more "shades of gray". Is it understandable given the way the game is structured and Hyun-ae's explanation for the choices at the beginning? Sure, but as the game wore on, the less I felt I could easily answer the questions poised as a simple "yes" or "no", and there were a few times when I felt I had to compromise my true feelings just to proceed.

Analogue: A Hate StoryBut perhaps more importantly, I did feel. Analogue's complex narrative and varied cast of nuanced characters, even those you don't get to meet, is almost scarily good at pulling your emotions in unexpected directions. That the story makes you feel that strongly about the things you read about, from the people to the things they did, is more than a little impressive. The careful pacing won't appeal to everyone, but those who appreciate cleverly structured character dramas will get a lot out of it. The gorgeous artwork by Raide breathes life into Mute and Hyun-ae, while Isaac Schankler's soundtrack is unobtrusively beautiful and expressive.

My first playthrough took me somewhere around five hours or so, and while the endings feel a little abrupt, I don't regret a second of it. At times it was uncomfortable, grim, and more than a little saddening, but Analogue: A Hate Story was always, always heartfelt and smart with a light at the end of the tunnel. (Depending on your choices of course.) While it might be light on action, those looking for a deeper and at times darker narrative with a big focus on character development will want to give this one a chance to get inside their brain.

Analogue: A Hate Story walkthrough

Alright boys and girls, there should be little to no trouble in playing this game right to the end. But I'm going to give you a guide on how to beat a very particular part of the game, specifically the "clever puzzle-like timed sequence towards the end of the game" as stated in the review.

Also, how to obtain all the endings.

How to beat the timed sequence:

The timed sequence is of course, the reactor meltdown. This event is triggered is by reading *Mute's questions to *Hyun-ae. Once the sequence starts proper, you are locked in with whatever AI that is active at the time. You cannot switch out for another AI for the rest of the game. That means, if you happened to have *Hyun-ae active at the start of the meltdown, you can never talk to *Mute ever again for the remainder of the game.

You are given pre-emptive warning about this by some static across the screen. There will be enough time to switch to whichever AI you want prior to the beginning of the sequence, provided you're good at typing and you don't faff about. And of course, whichever AI you do this sequence with will obviously make an impact on the ending you get.

You're given 20 minutes to do pretty much everything I'm hiding below. The sequence is divided into two parts, and as you play, you will know the divider. Will lump everything together, so read everything before you load up that save.

Disabling the reactor:

The "help" command really does help here.

In order to disable the reactor, you have to ensure that the ship has sufficient power to function without it. By using the "pss" command, you will be able to turn on the ship's backup power supply system...

...but the primary battery of the power supply system is running low at 0.1%. So, you then switch over to the secondary battery, which is doing just fine at 20%.

Still, that doesn't solve the problem that there are too many useless things on the ship that is sucking up all the power. You can check this using the "power_control" command. The ship is running at 99% power and you will need to drop it to below 20% in order to disable the reactor.

So, use "power_control list" to see all the stuff that uses power on the ship. Then, basically disable everything except the main_computer, communications and the core that your current AI is stored in. Yes, that means turning off the core with the other AI. Once that is done, you can safely disable the reactor.

Commands needed to perform this are below.

Commands:

1. pss enable
2. pss switch_battery
3. power_control disable core1 (or core2)
4. power_control disable bulkheads core3 core4 core5 core6 docking
5. power_control disable gravity rail sensors waste
6. reactor disable

The SECOND PART:

Now that you have successfully disabled the reactor, talking to your AI will reveal another problem, the core temperature is still too high and will result in massive damage. The timer does not reset at all for this part. You are not given any clue on how to lower the temperature at the start, you are meant to somehow figure it out.

If you're taking too long to figure it out, the AI will reveal the answer after some time, so really, there's no hurry.

If you're the impatient type, what you need to do is

use air from the ship's life support system to vent excess heat into outer space.

To do that, the commands are:

1. power_control enable bulkheads
2. power_control enable life_support
3. power_control disable bulkheads

Endings:

Ending 1:

Talk to *Hyun-ae. A lot. Agree with everything she says. Just be nice to her and be angry at the same people she's angry at. Then, when she inevitably confesses to you, reject her. Harsh.

Ending 2:

Talk to *Hyun-ae. A lot. Agree with everything she says. Just be nice to her and be angry at the same people she's angry at. Then, when she inevitably confesses to you, reciprocate her feelings. And agree with her taking things a little slow.

Ending 3:

The easiest one to get. At any point after you obtain admin access to the ship, type "download" on the override terminal.

Ending 4:

Go through the reactor meltdown with *Mute. And then choose to take her back with you when the time comes.

Ending 5:

Pretty tough. First, do the same thing as Ending 4. Go through the reactor meltdown with *Mute, then continue down her path. Close to the end, she will ask you whether you've shown her everything. Tell her there's one more thing left.

Now, the tricksy part. If you've gone through Endings 1 and 2, you'll know about that last diary entry of the Pale Bride. You know the one. Yes, that one. What you want to do is show it to *Mute. Ordinarily, you can't, because you need to go down the entirety of *Hyun-ae's path to access that entry and now, she's locked out.

This is where you learn how to cheat:

Notice that you're able to search logs by ID. This allows to search for every log in the game, including those that you couldn't unlock.

So, with this in mind, use the ID for that diary entry to unlock it:

7-EUX25

Then, show the log to *Mute. Yay!

Best I can tell...

You have to get Hyun-ae to give you access to her entire diary, and then switch to Mute, before you're informed about the reactor meltdown. The main problem with this is that it seems reading two of Mute's questions, or 'reading' the same one twice (looking at it, asking Hyun-ae to look at it, and then getting sent back to it when she's done talking) is what sets off the reactor event. If you keep changing screens fast enough, you can manage to delay being told about the reactor meltdown, by doing this I was able to get most of Hyun-ae's diary, then quickly go to the console and switch to Mute. After fixing the generator, Mute reacted to the "muteness" log, but said that it isn't mentioned anywhere else she has access to.

Hope that helps. I could certainly use a walkthrough right now too...

Anyone noticed that Analogue: A Hate Story is just the opposite of Digital: A Love Story? Same developer too.

The "Harem" ending:

It is not possible to get the Harem ending on your first play through.

On your second play through, note that it is possible to access an entry by inputting it's "entry code" into the search bar at the top of the main interface.

Show *Mute the "Forever Silenced" entry by using its code: "7-EUX25"

Ta-da!

@Silverfate: Only done one playthrough so far, but I suspect the big event in the middle of the game is on a timer, rather than being triggered by any actions. There is an options setting to slow down time, will definitely be trying it next playthrough. Anyone else tried it?

Can someone give me the code for message 6-1, or a hint on how to access it? I've got everything but that, and I can't figure out what would trigger it.

I feel dumb for having to ask but I can't figure out how to get the The Security Program is Relieved of Her Duty ending. Can anyone help?

I tried doing what S suggested for the harem ending but *Mute won't acknowledge it--she just gives her generic dialogue (the 'sorry, I don't know what you mean' one)...when should I show it to her?

This may be a clue;

"Harem" are the wives (or concubines) of a polygamous man.

Mal: You've probably already seen 6-1.

It's present right at the start of the game, but is deleted (without trace) by *Hyun-ae if you show it to her. The completiton percentage only shows logs you've finished the game with, so it will never show up in there unless you avoid showing it to *Hyun-ae. If you want to get it back, the ID is:

6-22A

Spoilers over with, I'd also like to say that, having been a great fan of Digital: A Love Story, I bought and played this to completion as soon as I saw it.

Digital still has the edge for me, but only just - both are great games, and the effort put into the text and art for Analogue is obviously tremendous. I did feel less immersed here than in Digital, but a part of that was due to my cursor freezing for about half a second every time I moved it over an icon - odd.

Extremely minor bugbears - overall, another excellent game. I shall have to play DTIPBIJAYS now.

Reply

I found all five endings, but it looks like I still only have 90% completion. There are no blank lines in blocks 2-10. Is there a block 1 and how can I see anything in it? Or what else am I maybe missing?

Reply
username.localhost April 22, 2012 5:06 PM

@schep:

Block 1 is unlocked by asking *Hyun-ae one of *Mutes questions, specifically the one about marriage. Of course, you must do this from a save that is not too close to the *Hyun-ae ending, or she will not even listen to the question.

I feel really stupid asking this, even considering I'm just not used to command-typing games; but here goes. How do you get beyond after Hyun-ae asks you to type in "decrypt block3"? It doesn't work, even after I tried to combine it with existing commands (su, download, etc.) or tried mixing capital letters. Is it just because I'm playing the trial version, or I'm doing something wrong? I find the story truly intriguing but not sure about purchasing it because I'm afraid I'll get stuck with the command typing thing again. To be honest, I'm so bad at this that I was stuck at the beginning of the game because I didn't know I had to add "enable_ai" before typing in the AI's name. I'll definitely buy it if I'm sure I wouldn't get stuck repeatedly...it's not the game's fault, though...

If you're new to the genre, then it just takes a little practice to get used to it. It'll be worth it, though.

Remember, you can't decrypt until you are in super user mode. To get in, you'll need the password. So you'll type in su followed by the password...

The password is the Pale Bride's real identity. Who is the Pale Bride?

Hyun-ae.

So type in:
su hyun-ae

That will then successfully log you into super user mode. Once there, it asks to fix the files, so choose yes. Then you can type in:

decrypt block3

You'll get the hang of it and be an old pro at interactive fiction and text games in no time.

:)

I apologize for what may be a really dumb question but how do I get past the Override Terminal (restricted mode) in the very begging? none of the commands available seem to do anything. I thought maybe I was supposed to "enable_ai" then type "*Hyun-ae" but it said i misspelled it.

Reply
megamanz4 April 29, 2012 12:37 PM

drelostams: I'll go ahead and drop the exact input you need to get past that, given absolutely no prior knowledge:

>help
[displays all available commands]

>help enable_ai
[displays available AI personalities. currently, only one is available, *Hyun-ae. also, when in doubt about a command, use help (command)]

>enable_ai Hyun-ae
[enables the *Hyun-ae personality. the star is optional. this is input as one command, not two.]

>quit
[drops out of the console and switches to the active AI - in our case, *Hyun-ae]

Regarding the Walkthrough for Ending 5:

As people have pointed out, it is not enough to simply show the necessary entry to *Mute. You have to show it at a specific time. Do *Mute's route to the point where she asks you if you feel sorry for *Hyun-Ae. Answer "I Do", then "Yes"; this will piss her off and prompt her to unlock Block 8 (the final log messages). NOW show her the key message. (The "Muteness" entry isn't required; it just happens to be the only other message you can show her through "cheating" that she reacts to.) Everything else is straightforward.

Also, it's not necessary, but if you want to get 100% messages in a single playthrough:

The easiest way is to write down the IDs for the 3 log entries in Block 8, then start a new game on *Hyun-Ae's route and enter those ID's. All log entries EXCEPT for the ones in Block 8 are reachable in *Hyun-Ae's route, without cheating; it just takes a bit of pre-planning to get them all.

I feel really stupid, but I think I got stuck. I got all of blocks 2, 3, 5, 9 and 10, but I can't figure out how to get to the other logs. Any hints?

Reply
megamanz4 June 29, 2012 5:03 PM

@Rognik (probably a few months late to help you): here's all I know about unlocking the blocks you're missing:

Block 1: *Hyun-ae shows this to you after you show her *Mute's question regarding marriage, presuming you haven't gotten too far in her route. You won't ever get anything from here with *Mute.

Block 4: You can complete this one without starting the reactor sequence. Show everything you can (except *Mute's questions) to both AI personalities.

Block 6: If you show everything to *Hyun-ae in her route, you should get everything. *Mute, by her own admission, just glossed over most of the stuff in here, so she won't expose it to you (she'll only expose the one dated 3/3 year 322, mainly because it caught her attention)

Block 7: As with block 6, just show everything to *Hyun-ae in her route. Make sure you note everything in here, as one particular entry (which *Mute never noticed in her glossing) is required for a certain ending, and you have to enter its ID because you won't have it when you need to use it.

Block 8: Go through *Mute's route. She exposes the entire block all at once.

note: some entries, when shown to the AI, can be used to reveal two different sets of messages depending on your response to her. If it looks like such a situation is set up, show it to the AI twice.

Reply

Regarding ending 5 . . .

actually that you don't really have to cheat to get ending 5, if you ask Hyun-ae the last question first, it gives you a chance to unlock all of those logs properly, so you can still show Mute the log without forcing it out like that.

The link for the demo is no longer accurate; the file name is now Analogue-Trial-1.2.exe instead of 1.0b. Off to go try it out!

hey, i have a theory on how one can get the

harem

ending on their first time? I'm not sure if this will work, but first

when the meltdown starts, act quickly and deactivate *mute's core, then move *mute to *hyun-ae's core. this will disable *mute but keep her alive

next

continue with *hyun-ae's branch until she reveal's the correct logs to get the ending

next step is a little complicated

move *mute to one of the deactivated cores, deactivate *hyun-ae's core, then activate *mute's core and move *hyun-ae into *mute's new core

if im right then

you can show *mute *hyun-ae's logs without doing a file search for them

get back to me if this works, if nothing else it should be interesting

Reply

Sorry Charles, that won't work.

I had a similar idea to get Hyan-ae back. I wanted to finish showing Mute's questions to Hyan-ae after dealing with the reactor meltdown. Disabling one core to activate another doesn't work.

Yeah, it's wonky logic. But that's because it's a deliberate choke-point in the game.

Reply

To unlock Ending 4 (*Mute's ending), you need to play as a man. Or else she'll just resign herself to staying on the ship.

But you can get Ending 5 (the harem ending) if you're female.

Reply

Also, if you're male, I've noticed that *Mute opens up to you more about her relationship with Smith Sang-jung.

Reply

lyxelf, I'm pretty sure you don't have to be male with Mute. :) Just female and ensure that Mute is aware you're not straight when she asks.
