DoraScene of the Crime: Golden DollWaaaaaay back in 2009, dinosaurs roamed the earth and the fine folks at Pastel Games let you be a detective for a short, shining time. Now it's time to dust off the old fedora and practice your cynical cop sneer once again with The Scene of the Crime: Golden Doll, a new noir point-and-click mystery that asks you to solve a murder on some quiet beachfront property.

Click to interact with people and objects, and click on items in your inventory to use them. Dust for prints, Remember to check your reports tray on your desk back at the office frequently; as evidence is analysed, reports will come in that can unlock new clues and locations. The office is also where you'll be able to dust evidence you find for fingerprints and track your progress on the leads board; click and drag items pinned to it to attempt to combine clues. Click on your map to travel to new locations as they become available.

The first title in this atmospheric little mystery series had a lot going for it. Unfortunately, it was also very short. By contrast, Golden Doll is somewhat longer, and requires you to do a bit more detective work this time around. (Although you still don't get to ask anyone if they're a wise guy; this is a critical oversight.) The game is no slouch in regards to its presentation either; the artwork is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is so mellow and appropriate you'll probably find yourself spontaneously sprouting a trench coat just by listening to it.

Navigation is, unfortunately, a little awkward initially; navigational arrows can pop up in odd places, and you'll find yourself wagging the cursor around the screen, watching for it to change. The hot spots are a decent size, but it's still easy to miss a new perspective point or scene shift. Combine that with the constant backtracking to and from your office whenever you get stuck, hoping to trigger a new report to advance the gameplay, and it's more frustrating than it needed to be.

The only other downside is that so much of the story and exposition is left to a cut-scene at the very end of the game you can't interact with. I assure you, game, our brave and stoic readers are very adept at apprehending perps! While it isn't quite perfect, while it lasts, The Scene of the Crime: Golden Doll is a fun and stylish experience, and a welcome addition to what's shaping up to be a very clever series.

I'm stuck at the Golden Doll club. How do I talk to the old man?

Reply

Vogonviking:

Took me a while too, you have to give him something to help with the cold

Where could you get something to make him warm? A blanket perhaps

If you have found Wilco's house, check the store next door

A small tip for those stuck near the end as I was:

You can pick up blood with fingerprint tape.

This game is really awesome, good flow, intriguing plot, good user interface nice animation sequence at the end, still don't really like the drawn artwork. Nice take on the point and click genre I'll keep waiting for the followup.

I was just stuck and had to use the video walkthrough for something, so I'm leaving a hint for anyone else who can't

unlock a new location after seeing the cold hobo at the Golden Doll club, and has 2 progress circles filled in.

Hint:

You can drag leads on top of each other if you think they're related.

Drag the address of the owner of the beach houses on top of a picture of a different house. You will unlock a new location.

Hmm, think I'm running into a bug.

I get Burt Wilco's address from the reports, but it doesn't actually show up on my map, and from what a previous poster has said I need to get there. Am I missing something?

Reply
Night Stryke July 20, 2010 8:31 PM

Nevermind, I got it.

Reply

time for a walkthrough. anyone?

Reply

OK, I'm stuck near the end, with... six dots lit up on my "leads board".

I cannot find the hotel, despite having linked the room number to it... the only thing I can think of is that I keep missing something at the petrol station? (I have no idea why you get a close-up of the petrol pump!) Oh, for the Americans out there, that is of course the "gas station"! :-)

Reply
Pon-chan July 20, 2010 10:44 PM

Help! I can't find Irvine Blvd. Are you supposed to find it on the map, or is there something I'm missing?

Reply
mario fan8 July 20, 2010 11:08 PM

Paul: I'm working on it, give me an hour or two and it will be done.

Reply

Is this the same people that did Daymare Town? The menus look the same.

Reply

If you're stuck at the end (missing last location)...

I needed to connect the poster of Steel with the house, burned license, and fingerprints on necklace

I was missing one of those pieces.

Oh and about the gas station, Guthlaf...

I never found anything you could do there and I still beat it

I liked the leads board and the gameplay overall, but some leads seemed like they should go together but didn't. And the ending made kind of a big leap from our evidence, in my opinion.

(Reads walkthrough) Good grief....

I missed two things at the beginning:

1) I failed to get the "corpse's arm" close-up, and thus her fingerprints.

2) I failed to notice that you could look closely at the left-hand beachhouse's verandah/porch/etc - so I never found the necklace....

Once I'd done that, it was all settled...!

:-/

Reply

Ee-yoiks. Possibly because it was a year between the last game and this one, I didn't know a couple of things the game never said how to do to solve it:
1) The fingerprint tape can pick up more than just fingerprints
2) Two leads that are related have to be placed directly on top of each other; if they aren't related, one ends up underneath the other, and has to be moved out of the way.
The lack of this information left me wandering around, clicking every square inch of everything, thinking I had missed something. After looking up the necessary information here, I found the game to be smooth, with a big reveal that sounded more like the prime suspect confessing than a fully-explained accusation.

Why do albinos have a tendency to be portrayed as a bad guy? It's kind of unfair that they're rarely anything else.

Reply

They really should have pointed out that you can connect things on the "leads" page. Also, there's a little bit of pixel hunting in one part. And like all Pastel Games games, it's always extremely hard to tell where to click to go from screen to screen.

Otherwise, a great game.

I have the blood sample from the hankerchief, but I can't find the 2nd blood sample to give me the location of the hotel.

I've done everything on the walkthrough, and triple-checked the entire thing, but I am still a progress dot short

and I can't go to the hotel

Reply

Another enjoyable game from Pastel Games, although I agree with Gar that the clue-matching leaves a little to be desired. I also found that sometimes the direction arrows made it look like you were going to leave the scene rather than find a clue, so it took me a loooong time to get all the pieces together.

Nevertheless, noir "hand-drawn" mystery adventure? I'm always up for more of those.

Reply

for people trying to get to the motel:
i was stuck trying for a long time, then i realized i had to:

drag the information about mark gardner together. the picture of the car, the note about him being shot at the golden doll and the note about him being the owner.

once i did that, the hotel unlocked.

i have to say, i didnt like the ending...it didnt seem to fit the way the story was going.

Reply
expired July 23, 2010 5:02 PM

Nice relaxed game, the action packed ending seemed a bit out of place.
Like Gar I don't understand

Why the albino always turns out to be the bad guy. I am yet to come across an evil person with albinism and they often have eyesight problems which might affect their aim(?).

Jellybones July 23, 2010 8:35 PM

I think that while the cutscene at the end did seem a bit superfluous, it was really well done. It looked good, and the sequences were pretty creatively conceived.

Though I admit I would have liked

to have had to discover the path of the bullet interactively, by looking through the holes that would have been left in the wood of the house on the left for example. Anyone else get reminded of the movie Running Scared when they saw that part?

Whoa. That city map is definitely at least based on a pre-interstate version of the southern half of San Francisco. (In the upper left corner, you can see the lower bits of the Haight, the upper right is the Dogpatch/Potrero Hill area, the lower right is a pre-renaming Bayview, and the lower left is Ingleside. (The Southern Pacific railroad marked on the map is roughly where I-280 is now.)

Reply

For anyone stuck with one progress dot remaining, I had all the clues and all the connections with the clues, but you need the very last forensic report. I had to revisit several spots on the map and double check and when I returned to the police department the report was ready.

Reply

There is a big bad bug in the game... right after getting

notebook from the bank

I returned to my desk and examined it carefully. I then went to the Leads board and out of curiosity tried to drag the

motel brochure

down onto the city map. What happened next is the bug:

The brochure and the page from the notebook merged right above the citymap. Unfortunately this left the pushpin and the merged items in the "return" area so I could no longer access the clues in any way, not even to get the item description text to pop up. Suggest you rewrite so that nothing can ever be dropped inside the return area.
