Coconut Queen

JohnBAppearing out of nowhere like a crazy tropical storm, Coconut Queen has arrived and is ready to give Build-a-lot (and, heck, even Totem Tribe) a challenge for its casual sim throne. Combining the "neighborhood improvement" concept with some inventive unlockables and a subtle sense of humor, Coconut Queen provides a phenomenal gaming experience with enormous replay value.

coconutqueen.jpgThe island of Lui-Lui is home to pristine beaches, lush jungles, countless scuttling crabs, and, as of today, Liz from accounting. You see, CoCoCo (the Colorado Coconut Company) has sent Liz to check the status of its island property to see why fruit production has dwindled. When she arrives, some really strange things begin to happen, starting with the handsome gentlemen islanders crowning her as their queen!

The basic goal of Coconut Queen is to please tourists and rake in lots of cash. You do this by building cabanas, cabins and other lodgings while sprucing them up with hot tubs, palm trees, umbrellas, etc. While collecting rent from the visitors, you also have commercial income you gain from structures like buffets and markets whose revenue is based on how many tourists are staying at your resort. Appeal plays a big part in how much cash you earn, so spending time beautifying the landscape really pays off in the end.

Each chapter has a set of specific goals that must be met in order to progress. You might have to build a certain number of buildings, upgrade a few structures, bring in a set amount of money per rental day, or even destroy/sell several properties. You'll also have to contend with the occasional disaster, such as monsoons, angry monkeys, and sharks!

Once you work through an entire resort area the game really opens up. Coconut Queen features several stores that allow you to purchase new structures and unique upgrades using gems awarded to you after completing a chapter. You can also use gems to unlock new pathways on the island. Which upgrades you buy and in what order you buy them has an enormous affect on the gameplay.

coconutqueen2.jpgAnalysis: Coconut Queen has the look of a Saturday morning cartoon and the sense of humor to match. For example, the muscular worker men have a dozen or so sayings to spout each time you send them to work, including "Does this skirt make me look fat?". Each building is also given a name, some of which are quite clever!

One of the best things about Coconut Queen is that you aren't limited as to where you can build. Unlike the Build-a-lot series, Coconut Queen lets you place structures on any piece of open ground. Want to have small clusters of huts scattered around the screen? Do it! Like everything built around a central location? Awesome, go for it! This freedom not only gives it a leg up on Build-a-lot, it dramatically increases the replay value to boot. Once you complete an area you also unlock freeplay for that zone, allowing you to play and develop your resort for as long as you like without worrying about goals!

Coconut Queen does something no casual building game has bothered to do: create a plot that's unveiled as you play. Instead of the usual "you're a realtor, make things pretty", a somewhat wacky tale of megacorp versus island natives ensues, placing Liz in the middle of things and bringing you along for the ride. After each chapter, bits of story are spun via short cut scenes. Not only do you catch up on current events, you're often treated to flashbacks that fill in the story of why Liz came to the island. You also get a few tantalizing peeks into the minds of other characters, many of whom have their own endgame in mind!

I was pleasantly surprised by Coconut Queen's artwork, relaxed setting, and overall demeanor. It's a phenomenal casual sim with excellent artwork, a lively atmosphere, and a cheeky sense of humor to match. Wrap all of that around finely-tuned gameplay and you have a title that's virtually flawless!

Coconut Queen Walkthrough

General Information

  • Only a few tourists were injured in the making of this walkthrough.

  • Don't forget to catch crabs for extra money!

  • Move around in the game three ways: click and drag the background, use the keyboard arrow keys, or if you are placing a building just move the mouse to the edge of the screen and it will scroll.

  • If you hear a ticking sound it means that time is running out. Complete necessary items as quickly as possible.

  • Commercial income accumulates twice as fast as rental income, so don't neglect to put down businesses.

  • CoCoCo storage sheds have a negative effect on appeal. When possible either take them down or refurbish them.

  • Building near water is a cheap and easy way to add appeal. Any rental structure built near water adds +5 appeal.

  • Adding additional appeal requires structures from the "outdoor goods" menu. Each item will add appeal in a specific radius, so cluster rental units around one "outdoor goods" item and each will receive the appeal points.

  • Each "outdoor goods" item will only affect a building once. Duplicates of the same item will have no effect on the same building's appeal. To add more appeal to a rental structure use different items from the "outdoor goods" menu.

  • Rental on each unit is determined by the unit size, how many upgrades it has, and how much appeal the building has. Units upgraded with as many stars as possible and with multiple appeal points will rake in more money. A five star hotel, for instance, can earn between $20,000 and $23,000 depending on the placement and appeal points.

  • Rental units will not earn money while being upgraded.

  • Which types of rental units are built are determined by the goals of the chapter. At first only smaller units are available to be built. Larger units take up more space but hold more tourists and have higher rental incomes.

  • The two largest rental structures, Hotels and Palaces, are about the same size. Hotels hold more tourists but generate less income. Palaces generate more income but hold fewer tourists. Which structure you wish to build will depend upon specific goals for the chapter; if you need to increase the number of tourists go for hotels, if you need to increase rental income go for Palaces.

  • Commercial buildings are not affected by appeal, so don't bother placing appeal items next to commercial buildings.

  • Commercial income is determined by two things: the type of building and the number of tourists on the island. Each rental unit you add and each tourist that comes in increases the income of commercial buildings.

  • When you need to increase commercial income it is better to first increase the number rental units. More tourists will increase both commercial and rental income, giving extra needed money.

  • Each section will have a certain number of chapters, either five or ten (not counting the tutorial). As you start each chapter in a section CoCoCo will determine your manpower and resources, but the resort structures and layout will be the same as the previous chapter in that section. Remember this and plan ahead. When you begin chapter 1 in a section you are working with a pretty pristine place, usually with only a few existing structures. By the time you have gotten to chapter 10 you will have a full blown resort.

  • Remember that space is limited. If you are running out of needed space for larger structures you can clear cut some forest for more space. However, certain sections (such as the Yippi-Kai-Yeh Temple) do not allow clear cutting, so remove smaller rental units and other buildings to place larger structures such as hotels and palaces. Clear cutting forest also will add to your building materials.

  • Each level that you complete will net you one gem. Gems can be used in two ways: to clear paths to two other areas in the island, or in the three stores shown on the main map. Use the gems in the stores to help decrease costs or add extra items to your build menu. It takes 5 gems to clear a path to one of the "extra" areas of the island.

  • The stores and their items:

    1. CoCoCoCoCo

      • Material Discount: Each gem reduces material costs by 10% (up to 3 gems can be spent).

      • More Time: Each gem adds 5% time to reach chapter goals (up to 3 gems can be spent).

      • Better Recycling: Each gem adds 20% more materials gained when recycling buildings (up to 3 gems can be spent).

      • Ad Campaign: Each gem adds a 10% increase to commercial revenue (up to 3 gems can be spent).

      • Buyer's Discount: Knocks 10% off of the price of buying industrial buildings (up to 3 gems can be spent).

      • Gazebo: Adds the gazebo to the outdoor goods menu. Gazebo adds +5 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Greenhouse: Adds the greenhouse to the outdoor goods menu. Greenhouse adds +10 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Firepit: Adds Firepit to the outdoor goods menu. The firepit is a commercial structure and adds to commercial revenue (cost 1 gem).

    2. Coconut Grove

      • Palm Tree: Adds palm tree to outdoor goods menu. Palm tree adds +3 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Bamboo: Adds bamboo to outdoor goods menu. Bamboo adds +3 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Shrub: Adds Shrub to outdoor goods menu. Shrub adds +3 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Boulder: Adds Boulder to outdoor goods menu. Boulder adds +3 appeal to rental units (cost 1 gem).

      • Efficient Clearing: Each gems increases the amount of materials garnished by clear cutting by 25% (up to 4 gems can be spent).

    3. Hunk University

      • Scholarship Program: Takes 10% off cost of training new worker for each gem spent (up to 4 gems).

      • Advanced Placement: Each new worker trains 10% faster per gem spent (up to 4 gems).

      • Shop Classes: Workers will build 10% faster per gem spent (up to 4 gems).

      • Track & Field: Workers will run to tasks 10% faster per gem spent (up to 4 gems).

      • Entomology Department: Butterflies will now garner $5.00 per each one caught (cost 1 gem).

      • Marine Biology Department: Crabs will now garner $100.00 per each one caught (cost 1 gem).

      • Sharkology Department: Earn $10,000.00 per each shark shooed away from the resort (cost 1 gem).

  • Each area will feature some wildlife that you can catch or shoo away. Crabs will get you $5.00 per each caught (unless you use the store upgrade). Butterflies will slow down your workers, and will net $1.00 per each one caught (unless you use the store upgrade). Sharks will scare away tourists (no rental income in units near sharks) until shooed away (upgrade in the store and earn $10,000.00 per shark). Monkeys scare away tourists and no rental income will be collected from infested buildings until they are scared away. Dealing with sharks and monkeys will tie up your labor force as it takes 1 worker to scare them away.

  • Jungle once cleared will not grow back until you reforest an area.

  • When you need to quickly increase appeal in an area, start with the larger items (hot tubs, gazebos, greenhouses) first, then fill in the smaller areas with palm trees, bamboo, shrubs, and boulders.

  • Once you finish a section you open the Freeplay ability, which allows you to go in and develop the resort to your own specifications, with no goals or timekeeping.

  • Tikis are earned by achieving certain goals. To see the requirements for earning Tikis go to the Tiki room and hover the mouse pointer over the Tiki outlines. My personal favorite? The Big Lebow's Tiki.

  • Upgrade store items based on the areas that you will be dealing with. In the areas where butterflies attack, it is good to upgrade to $5.00 per butterfly caught. Before dealing with the shark infested beach, invest in the Sharkology department to earn lots of extra money per shark shooed away. In areas where you will need to buy lots of buildings from CoCoCo it might be best to use the upgrade that reduces the purchase price. Early in the game a good investment is the $100.00 per crab upgrade, this allows you to earn lots of extra money while waiting for a rent cycle to finish.

  • Each section will have specific problems to deal with: crazy butterflies, aggressive monkeys, gumming sharks, monsoons, earthquakes, and the Creature from the Blue Moon Lagoon. Each will require different handling.

  • Buildings will break down. You will hear a crashing noise and a yellow symbol will appear on the screen. Click on the symbol and it will take you to the broken structure. Repair structures as soon as possible as they will not generate income until repaired.

  • Structures will break down spontaneously, but there are also events which can damage them, such as monsoons, earthquakes, or sabotage.

  • Shark sightings and monkey problems will also be indicated by the flashing yellow symbols, which look like yield signs. Click on the symbol and you will be scrolled to where the problem is.

  • This walkthrough will not be covering the tutorial, the tutorial does that just fine.

  • Once certain areas are unlocked you can proceed in the game in different directions. This walkthrough will deal with my preferred method of going through the game. Your mileage may vary. The Walkthrough order: Aloha Cove; Coconut Queen Bay; Blue Moon Lagoon; Dun-Dah Beach; Yippi-Kai-Yeh Temple; Kaba-Lui Park.

  • Each chapter will start off with a list of requirements to complete it. However, additional requirements will come in during play. The walkthrough will list all requirements so you know what is coming.

  • As each chapter builds on the one before it, the walkthrough can only offer general advice on how to complete a level on time. As I cannot predict how you might have handled a previous level, I cannot give specific advice.

  • When building up an area it is best to go with this formula: build or upgrade rental units first to increase rental money. Then build commercial (the additional tourists mean the units will be bringing in more money once they are built). Save appeal improvements for last.

  • You can sell your buildings to CoCoCo for needed cash but remember: (1) they will strip away all improvements, so if you buy them back you will have to refurbish and upgrade again, and (2) CoCoCo buildings add negative appeal to an area. Surrounding rentals may be affected.

Aloha Cove

  • Chapter 1

    • Requirements: Build 6 3-star cabanas, commercial income of $500.00

    • Remember to build near water for appeal points. Don't build near CoCoCo buildings as they have a negative effect on rentals.

    • While waiting for rent to come in or for materials to be delivered scroll around and catch crabs for extra money.

    • Build 1 cabana (you should already own 5).

    • Build 1 concession stand (you should already own 1).

    • Buy more materials and upgrade your cabanas 2 at a time.

    • Buy more materials and build more cabanas to bring up both rental income and commercial income.

  • Chapter 2

    • Requirements: Rental income of $20,000.00, Appeal of +60, Own 2 cottages

    • Remember to build near water for appeal points. Don't build near CoCoCo buildings as they have a negative effect on rentals.

    • While waiting for rent to come in or for materials to be delivered scroll around and catch crabs for extra money.

    • Buy 500 materials.

    • Build 2 cottages (near water if possible).

    • Once the rent money comes in you have a choice: buy and refurbish an industrial shed or go ahead and build a new cottage or cabana to increase rent. Buying the shed takes away negative appeal. Building a cottage is cheaper and will bring in more rent money.

    • Upgrade your rental units, cottages first, to increase rental income.

    • Once rental income has hit $20,000.00 go ahead and build umbrellas to bring up appeal points. Try to place one umbrella between several buildings to maximize the appeal points.

  • Chapter 3

    • Requirements: Sell 4 Cabanas to CoCoCo, $1,200.00 Commercial Income, $30,000 Rental Income.

    • Sell Cabanas.

    • Buy materials and get 2 workers to start (later get a third).

    • Build cottages (4 or more) and upgrade to 3 stars.

    • Build 1 concession stand (more if needed).

  • Chapter 4

    • Requirements: $50,000.00 Rental Income, 3-star hotel, employ 5 workers

    • Buy materials and 1 worker.

    • Upgrade the hotel to 2 stars.

    • Upgrade all cabanas & cottages to 3 stars.

    • Get one more worker and materials.

    • Upgrade hotel to 3 stars.

    • At this point you can increase rental income one of two ways: buy CoCoCo shacks and refurbish them or build more cottages. In the next chapter you will have to purchase the rest of the CoCoCo buildings so you might as well get a head start. Continue to build and upgrade until rental requirement is met.

  • Chapter 5

    • Requirements: No industrial buildings, $75,000.00 Rental Income, $4,000.00 Commercial Income, +150 appeal

    • Most of the CoCoCo buildings are small. The option is to buy and refurbish (to Cabanas) or buy and salvage for materials. I prefer to salvage and use the materials to build Cottages (at least 4), which bring in more income.

    • Upgrade all rental structures to 3 stars if not already done.

    • Buy and either salvage or refurbish whatever industrial buildings are left.

    • Build more cottages and upgrade until rental income is achieved.

    • Once rental income is in place build at least 3 concession stands to bring up commercial income.

    • Place hot tubs and umbrellas as necessary to bring up appeal.

    • Simply refurbishing the shacks should bring up your appeal to +40. If it doesn't, build beach umbrellas as needed.

  • Chapter 2

    • Requirements: 8 3-star cabanas, 3 3-star cottages near the dock, upgrade the marketplace

    • Build the cottages near the dock first and start upgrading.

    • Upgrade the marketplace last.

    • Build a pool and a hot tub near the new hotel.

    • Buy lots of materials and keep them on hand, there will be a lot of repairs.

    • Add outdoor goods as needed to bring up appeal.

Yippi-Kai-Yeh Temple

  • Brace yourself, this level is very tough. Plan from the very beginning, or you will reach levels 9 and 10 and be unable to complete them.

  • By level 10 you are going to need to place at least 3 palaces and a water park in your resort. As this level has a lot of natural obstacles that cannot be cleared (boulders, palm trees) you must clear the jungle space in the first level or you will never be able to finish. You can only clear cut during the first part of the first level, after that you can no longer clear cut space.

  • When you reach the level that requires you to replant forest be sure to plant in the areas that already contain lots of obstacles such as boulders.

  • Take it as read on each level that you need to hire as much additional labor as you can afford. The monkeys in this level will cause constant trouble, needing to be scared away and causing damage. Monkey wrangling and repair work will be a big drain on your work force.

  • Due to the space constraints there will also be a lot of tearing down and rebuilding in this level.

  • You will need to purchase several buildings from CoCoCo, so now would be a good time to buy the upgrade that allows you to buy buildings cheaper. If you haven't already, it would be good to buy the outdoor goods upgrades like the gazebo, bamboo, and shrubs. It would also be good to buy the upgrade that gets you more materials for clear cutting.

  • Due to the large number of CoCoCo Buildings on this level there are a lot of negative impact points in the beginning. Remember to build near the water or the temple for additional appeal points to offset this.

  • Chapter 1

    • Requirements: Rental Income of $14,000.00; Build a cabana; own 1 3-star Cottage; buy a CoCoCo shed; Own 4 Cabanas; Appeal of +70

    • When you start you will need to clear cut some jungle for materials. Make sure to cut in areas that will leave large unobstructed areas for palaces to be built later on. Concentrate on clearing as much of the jungle below and to the left of the temple (leave lots of access to the beach) and areas in the upper left and lower left corners of the screen. As long as you do not build, you can continue to cut, so keep cutting until all the forest is gone.

    • Build a cottage and 4 cabanas, concentrating them around the temple for appeal points.

    • Upgrade the cottage to 3 stars, then start upgrading the cabanas.

    • Build another cottage to bring rental income up.

    • Buy and refurbish the CoCoCo shed.

    • Add outdoor goods as needed to bring up appeal.

    • Shoo away monkeys as needed.

    • Buy the CoCoCo cottage and refurbish.

    • Start upgrading the buffets.

    • Replant the jungle areas. Note: when replanting, do not plant in the nice open spaces you have already cleared. Try to plant in areas that have a lot of natural obstacles already, like boulder.

    • Add outdoor goods as necessary to bring up appeal.

  • Chapter 4

    • Requirements: Build Tourist Center; Commercial Income of $14,000.00; Appeal +225; Buy CoCoCo Buildings; Upgrade Tourist Center to 3 stars

    • Requirements: Buy final CoCoCo Hotel; Rental Income $240,000.00; Build 4 Spas; Balance of $2,000,000.00; Appeal of +500

    • Build the 4 spas (you will probably have to salvage smaller buildings to make room).

    • Buy and refurbish Hotel. Upgrade.

    • Upgrade all hotels to 5 stars.

    • Build condos to bring up rent. Build cottages in smaller spaces if necessary.

    • Place outdoor goods to bring up appeal.

    • Buy as much labor as possible.

    • Build 2 Palaces and upgrade to 3 stars.

    • Build condos if necessary to bring up tourist numbers.

This is an awesome game, its really easy to learn , music is fantastic, dialogs are hilarious, and I got all the freedom to develop it how ever way I want.

Catching crabs turns out to be more addicting then I anticipated, can't wait to see how the story turns out!

I really dislike the Build-a-lot games, and all the games of that sort of style. So I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying this game. and I mean REALLY enjoying it. I've been playing a good 3-4 hours and I'm still a long shot off completing it, and it seems like there's a lot of stuff still to unlock. And I've only dabbled in free-play so far. I can see this game taking up a lot of my free time. I'm really enjoying the graphics and the humor the game (especially the dur-duh joke. that made me laugh pretty hard)

Great game. I highly recommend it to any casual gamer.

Really nice game. Took me about 6 hours to finish it.

For all you cheaters out there here's a little trick I used:
Get the skill which enables you to buy buildings at reduced prices. This will enable you to build the most expensive building you can and then sell it and rebuy it for profit (indefinitely).

This works an all levels except for a few where the prices are higher.

For the people who have already finished the game, I've got a question regarding the story:

did you get a proper story through the cutscenes? After the volcano level last chapter I had the one w/ the queen running in the woods and ultimately finding a place full of women islanders. then the screen read "to be continued later" and i thought it would, but I never got the rest of the story, although I finished the game. I also noticed that in the rest of the cutscenes after this, the standard dude which was there was replaced by another, curly-haired dude, no explanation for that either. did i miss/skip something? where is the rest of the story?

Reply

Glad people are following the story and are interested. And for once, I have no twinges of guilt for reading SPOILERS...

Because I designed the game!

I can clarify what's going on with the ending and the other cut scenes for you:

The main storyline between Liz and Kane plays out over Aloha Cove, Coconut Queen Bay, Dundah Beach and finally Kaba-Lui Hot Springs.

Yippi-Kai-Yeh Temple and Blue Moon Lagoon are optional locations, which you can play through at any time after completing Aloha Cove, regardless of where you are in the main plot. So to avoid confusion (or that's what I thought I was doing anyhow) we had those plot points unfold with Hoanui, our "gentle giant", instead.

Ideally, we would have used Hoanui for the in-game dialogue, I know. But animation ain't cheap!

I was very annoyed at the iWin client. I tend to download demos to my laptop, and then install and play them later when I do not have access to the internet.

The review and the images make the game look very appealing, and I was really looking forward to playing it. Imagine my annoyance when I found out I had not downloaded the actual game, but a client that in turns downloads the game... if I had had internet at the time.

Worse, neither the review nor the webpage it links to mentions this tiny (but important) fact. This is why I don't use BigFish. Now I suppose I'll have to add iWin to the list. :(

Thanks Andy! You designed a great, great game!

So the volcano level cutscene I was talking about was the ending of the game, hinting at a sequel? awww, have you began working on it? I can't wait!

Concentrate on clearing as much of the jungle below and to the left of the temple (leave lots of access to the beach) and areas in the upper left and lower left corners of the screen. As long as you do not build, you can continue to cut, so keep cutting until all the forest is gone.

    • Upgrade the cottage to 3 stars, then start upgrading the cabanas.

JohnB: I prefer the security like intro page that casualgameplay uses, which I believe secures the games just fine.

However, more than the actual client, I was annoyed that I wasn't warned . The website doesn't say "Like this game? Download our portal and you can download it and and other fun shiny games!" it says "download the game here!"

Also, I like that Jayisgames gives out overwelmingly positive but fair reviews, like "This game is great, but the music will have you turning off your speakers in 5 seconds flat" or "This is an excellent game, but there's no option for the colorblind."

I seek not to bash, but to warn. The game might be awesome, but the client was frustrating for me. I thought this was a legitimate gripe that other people might like to know about in advance.

Has anyone tried this on CrossOver? It doesn't seem to work - all I get is a white window =(

Reply

I can all but guarantee this won't work on CrossOver due to the iWin Games Manager.

Regarding that, iWin is listening to its customers, so if you feel strongly about the Game Manager, please, please contact iWin and voice your opinions.

The JIG team had a conference call with iWin last week about it, and they were very receptive to our constructive criticisms. Hopefully we will see some positive changes with it in the near future.

If you refuse to use a games manager, Coconut Queen will be available from Casual Gameplay—where you always get individual, complete downloads without a game manager—in about a month from now.

Now that I have emerged from my two-day immersion in the game I do have a few things to say:

  • This game is freaking great!

  • The whole combination of the look of the game, the gameplay itself (such a workable combination of, say, Build-a-Lot crossed with Escape from Paradise), and the humor which permeated the whole thing made it such a fun experience I never wanted to stop.

  • This game is crying out for a sequel! Pretty please?

Andy, my hat is off. Big Lebow's Tiki? I almost fell off my chair laughing.;D

With the buildings i have beat the game and still one is not unlocked. can someone help me

This game is great, and I would like to purchase it, but I am really concerned about iWin's trustworthiness. They state in their privacy policy that they share personal information with third parties. iWin also is listed on Malware Domains.

I can't understand how JayIsGames can promote such an untrustworthy site. It seems other game sites linked to from here, like BigFish, have always been very safe.

Reply

Hi Leah, I understand your concern, and we take these matters very seriously here.

I believe iWin to be a reputable company, and I do not believe they are involved with malware of any kind. What is more likely is that the way the iWin games manager communicates over the Internet has caused false positive alerts.

I am not familiar with Malware Domains, but the iWin listing there comes from another site, emergingthreats.net without any reason or explanation. Upon further examination of the emerging threats website, it appears that they publish rule sets established for monitoring firewall activity that send alerts when suspicious activity is found. It is very likely the iWin games manager triggered such an alert when it communicates over the Internet back to the iWin servers, and probably does so using a non-standard port.

I have forwarded your comment to my contact at iWin, one of the Senior Marketing Managers. I expect he will confirm my rough explanation with a few more details.

As for the privacy policy, I agree that it is less than desirable and I thank you for pointing it out to me. I am very disappointed they do not allow you to opt out of the information sharing with third parties.

My advice: don't fear the malware listing, I don't believe that's an issue; but if you are uncomfortable with the privacy policy, wait until Coconut Queen is released on other portals (the game is currently exclusive to iWin). We will change the links here just as soon as it's available elsewhere.

Update: I just had an email exchange with Jason, Senior Marketing Manager at iWin, after he discussed the matter with an iWin vice president and general manager. He told me that since iWin, in fact, does not share personally identifiable information with third parties, they will be removing that wording from their privacy policy in a site update scheduled for Labor Day weekend (Sept.5-7).

That's really good to find out, thanks for looking into this. I will definitely buy the game now. I was just concerned after reading complaints about iWin on Web of Trust, in case you're interested.

This game is great, i love it!! But i have run into a spot of bother.... i have just done the clear up level and the bomb blasts and need a gem to unlock the path, but dont have one (i spent it without realising i would need it!) How do i go about fixing this?????? I cant continue without it?.

Suggestions, please!

I have messed up the Yippee-Kia-Yeh levels and made it impossible to accomplish the level 10 objectives...and NOTHING will wipe out my progress!

What do I do??

Reply

For a little extra space on level 10:

Build your water park early and salvage it. The objective is to build, not own, so you can finish the level parkless.

Some more notes on Yippi-Kai-Yeh 10

Re: GrinnyP's walkthrough:

You actually have to build 3 FIVE star palaces, and there's an additional requirement of 200k commercial income that pops up after you build the water park.

I had a LOT of trouble with this level so I took some notes to help anyone else.
Tips/walkthrough:

The only objectives that have to be maintained are the balance of 9.5m, commercial income of 200k, and appeal of +650. The rest can be ignored once they've been met once.

If you didn't cut down trees carefully in the first level (I sure didn't) then you'll have to work pretty fast. Plan out in advance where to put your water park and Palaces. Try to salvage as few hotels as possible, because they are a great help for the commercial income.

First priority: Water Park. I had to salvage a hotel to make room.
Second: Three fully upgraded palaces. You can salvage the Water park.
Third: Appeal/Commercial. I salvaged two palaces to build three star pools and surround them with cottages. Sprinkle a few rocks and trees if it's necessary. For commercial income, I salvaged a few condos to make room for water sports stores. Make sure to upgrade them. Fire pits and concession stands help, too, as well as whatever you can fit.

I finally finished it after about 10 tries. The cash balance was my last remaining objective, and I finished with about 3/4 of the time bar full. What a killer level after an otherwise really casual game!

I hope someone can help me. I am stuck on yippi-kai-yeh Temple chapter 6. I can not find the cococo hotel to buy and refurbish. I have played this level a number of times and have looked everywhere. Can someone give me a clue?
Thanks!

Reply

I loved the game, and maybe because I am used (and addicted) to time management games, I didn't find the game hard at all, quite the contrary.

I never ran out of time, and usually built a lot more that needed per level, so when a new level started most of the times I already had some objectives done (like upgraded buildings to 3 stars, appeal, number of tourists, and so on).

I finished the game twice.

The 1st I played the main areas first, and then the optional ones. And my final scene was the bomb, that exploded and opened a new path, revealing

all those women

and letting you wondering "what the heck…?".
I didn't like it much, I think that should've unlocked a new path that would allow you to understand what happened there. The game is great, we don't need a cliffhanger to wait eagerly for Coconut Queen 2.

But then I decided to replay the WHOOOLE game, thinking it could make a difference. So I played it in the "right" order: blue moon after coconut bay, Yippi-Kai-Yeh after Dun-Dah Beach, and leaving Kaba-Lui Park to the end.
And when I finished again

the whole "cast" showed up, dancing on the beach,

and no secret path cutscene… AT ALL.
Can someone explain why ???
Doesn't make any sense to me!
Anyone got a different scene???

Cheers

I had the same problem as Paula, I didn't realize i should be holding onto my gems and now i can't unlock any other paths. I'm stuck, and I don't want to start over.

Hi. The game is awesome. But, I'm kinda loosing my patience because I'm playing for the rest of the Tiki trophies, and one of them requires for me to build at least one of all structures, but, for some reason, there is one last "Building" that is locked, and I don't know how to unlock it. So, how about some help, pleeeeeeeeeease? And, yeah, a sequel is a MUST!

Reply

Sanya:
The final building, once you've purchased everything from CoCoCoCoCo, can be unlocked by playing FreePlay for a while: I found it while playing on Coconut Queen Beach (or whatever the name is). Although I don't think you need it: I unlocked the building after collecting all the tikis. Just clear some room and systematically check you have each structure.

I had the same thing happen to me. I finished all the levels and I didn't get the final cut scene which sucks. I just got everyone dancing. Which leaves me annoyed. I wish there was a way to replay all the cut scenes without playing the game all over again.

I have the exact same problem! I can't buy a hotel in Level 6 of the Yippie-Kai-Yeh scenario.

I noticed, looking back through previous levels, that there are three hotels on level 1, but on level 2, one is missing.

Anyone know how to fix this? Is it possible to start over the Yippie-Kai-Yeh chapter without restarting the entire game?

Reply

Great game. Everybody in the household loves it. Two negatives though:
1) A lot of people using gems to buy upgrades but not having enough to clear the paths to the optional areas. This seems to be due more to a misunderstanding of using the jewels than any gameplay strategy.
2) Rewarding deforestation. There is absolutely no incentive to keep the natural foliage and on most levels the best strategy would be to clear out all of the forest for building space and materials. There should be some benefit for keeping as much greenery around as possible.

I am having trouble with replanting the jungle on level 3 of Yippi-Kai-Yeh Temple, is there a trick? I am finsihing everything else, but it wont let me replant, there is no option? Help!!!

Reply

For the people finding themselves with too little gems to open the paths: if you replay any level you will get another gem.
It will not change what you have done before on that beach but you do get a new gem.

My problem and the reason for coming here was also not having the last building unlocked but after what Blue Hospitality sad I will keep playing.

Reply

Update: building is still locked but I did get the tiki for builing every building at least once.
So kind of a bummer.

Hi there. I think I'm missing something quite obvious. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use gems....please help....

Kimmie -

Have you finished playing Aloha Cove yet? You can't use the gems until you do. Once you've finished Aloha Cove, you will notice "holes" on the map that you see in between each round. Also, if you click on one of the three stores you will see that the items in the stores also have holes underneath them. To spend a gem all you need to do is click on a hole and a gem will fill it.

I like this game a lot. My problem is that I didn't realize you had to unlock paths with gems, and now have none left to unlock the other areas. I've tried replaying levels to get more gems, but despite beaitng them again, I don't get any more gems. Am I going to have to start over?

Help!! After level 10 on Coconut Queen Bay, I was never given the option to open up the Blue Moon Lagoon - and my other problem is on level 10 of the Hot Springs. I can not salvage the Palace so I keep running out of time. Help??

I'm stuck also on the level of the hot springs. I'm on the last level and it says to salvage all structures, but I'm unable to salvage the castle; the one that originated on this level. It only gives me an option to upgrade. I've upgraded it to all levels and still not option to salvage.

Reply

On the last level of Hot Springs you don't salvage the palace. Look very carefully, it is probably a lifeguard tower or an umbrella. I had an umbrella I couldn't find until an earthquake damaged it right before time ran out. Look at the number of structures to go to see how many you have to find.
Does anyone know if there is anyway to get more gems after you finish the game. Do you have to start over?

I finished this game and really enjoyed it. But I still haven't managed to unlock a final building which keeps me from acquiring the final tiki statue. Does anyone know how to unlock the final building?

Reply
Pashakitty December 4, 2009 12:42 PM

Never mind, I finally unlocked the last tiki. It looks like you not only have to build one of every building from the buildings menu but also from the outdoor structures menu as well.

I went back in free play to Coconut Queen Bay and salvaged all of my buildings then systematically built one of each of the buildings from the cabana to the water park.

I then opened the outdoor structures menu and built a greenhouse, a gazebo, a tennis court, and a hot tub. Once I built the hot tub the tiki achievement notice came up saying that I had unlocked the last tiki.

Reply
Pashakitty December 4, 2009 12:49 PM

Oh, I also built a life saver tower. I forgot to mention that in my previous post.

Though I now have all achievements unlocked I still don't have the final building unlocked. Don't know how to do that.

Reply

Just wondering how long you have to play a "free play" mode to unlock another building? Without goals, free play modes are sort of boring to me, and I feel like I played the first one for at least a half hour with no "reward".

Having not cleared forest out of the first level of Yippie, I can't finish level 10 either. I'll try demo-ing the water park, but it would be nice if you could restart the whole section again from level 1 without restarting the whole game. Just a tip for the sequel.

Reply

Finished Kaba Lui but still didn't get a tiki for it. Is this a glitch or do you have to do free play or smthg? It is a great game with hours of fun and replay is great fun too. Looking forward to #2 and finding out why all the women are hidden away and who is int he big chair. Dad?

I have gotten all the tikis but completed game one.

Why am I not getting the end game final tiki?

I am having a problem with the game.

I finished all the available levels and got to the section where it says to continue later, but I still have 2 locked areas.

How do I unlock these?

Reply

For anyone wanting that last building - get 600 tourists on an island. I did it in Coconut Queen Bay, not sure if you have too.

It's the daycare. Supposedly adds one tourist per building, but I had 50 additional tourists and it didn't change when I added buildings. So it drives up commercial revenue, and adds a small amount itself.

How can I get more gems to continue if I have already finished to the coconut bombs? I finally see that I need gems to get to the other 2 levels but can not get anymore.

I'm in Aloha Cove freeplay and have unlocked some things, but I don't see how to get out of freeplay. There's a checkbox in the goals area (which I cannot check), but it just says "free play mode". If I press the Menu button I have the option to Resume or Try Again, but nothing like, I'm Done.

HELP! I, too, cannot seem to finish level 10 of Yippie Kai Yeh. I've tried many different things, but I just can't seem to get enough commercial value--not even close. I've done everything else, so I've unlocked all buildings and outdoor items. What buildings give the most value?
Even being stuck on the very last level of the game (I went backwards), it's a 5 star game and I love it!

I have played freeplay for hours. I have over $1 million in rental income and about $750,000 in commercial income. I have all but the last building and all but the last outdoor goods. I am at a loss! OK I do have to say I love the game. I played through it twice already and will probably start a third round - it is a LOT of fun and great humour throughout.

BUT

Seriously, must you frustrate us with the maddening, crazy plot line? Everything else about this game is so, so well done. The plot seems well crafted enough and enough time is spent on it that it really draws you in. The character development is impressive for a casual game. But the plot makes no darn sense!! I kept going through it, trying to pay more attention, hoping I was just missing something, but no. I kept hoping all would be revealed at the end, but no. More questions all around. For the love of papaya, what is going on here?? I am literally losing sleep over this, please, help! I am dying to know! I'll pay you to tell me, anything! Just tell me why

Liz is being herded to a crazy man-island by Kane and his father and what happened to the women on the other side and what will happen to all of them in the end?

I HAVE TO KNOW!?!!?!!!

I have a problem with the game... I played through all of the chapters and gained all of the rubies, yet I still don't have the Kaba Lui tiki. I've played through all of it's chapters and played the freeplay forever. I have the Coconut Queen tiki, but not the Kaba Lui. What gives?

I want to first mention that I really did enjoy this game. It's casual sim game-playing at its best. That being said, the lack of closure in the plot is ridiculous. I have played a lot of video games, and any that have a plot will always somehow come to a conclusion. I could go through video game history and bombard you with examples, but I assume you're already familiar with them. Obviously, it's common for games to leave a hint of a sequel, but to play a game in which none of the loose ends are tied up is very frustrating.

So, in summary, I like the game and I'll probably wind up getting the sequel, but I implore the designers to offer some closure to the plot. Answer at least the majority of the open questions.

When you receive this many complaints about a plot, you know that you need to fix something.

This game is awesome. And this is a serious treat to Ladies. I found myself giggling at some cheesy lines such as: "what mountain should I move for you" but I have to admit they are quite pleasing in the ears. LOL

Anyhow, this game is so freaking neat in graphic, brilliant stories (I beg for a sequel. NO, it has to have sequel, I'm not begging you anymore, I'm telling you. LOL)

A few complain: sometimes, the game crashes on me during the earthquake or monsoon.
