Virtual Families

MarcusVirtual Families is the latest addition to the impressive lineup of simulation games from Last Day of Work, makers of the Virtual Villagers series. Virtual Families takes the basic concepts of Virtual Villagers and brings them home — literally. No longer are you concerned with a village of people trying to survive the ravages of the wild. Now it's just a single family in a single house. While the concept may seem over-simplified when compared to Virtual Villagers, you'll find that it's less about simplifying the game and more about concentrating on the details.

Virtual FamiliesYou begin by adopting your first virtual person. This is a very important choice to make early on, as the attributes that you settle on will affect how the rest of the game plays out. You can go through any number of different people to adopt. Each has their own physical appearance, profession, salary, likes and dislikes, and opinion on whether or not they want children. This last attribute is of particular importance. Couples who do not both want children can still have children, but you will have to work extra hard to keep them happy. Depending on how you want your virtual family to run, choose wisely.

Once adopted, your person moves into their house. You start immediately showing your person where and how to do certain things. Depending on their profession, show them their work area, be it the computer room, the shop outside, or the kitchen. Place them on the various pieces of litter scattered about the house and show them how to keep the place tidy. If you have played any of the Virtual Villagers games, you'll already understand the mechanics at work here. As your person learns behaviors, you can use one of two paddles to either praise them for an appropriate behavior, or to punish them for an inappropriate behavior.

As the game plays on, you will receive marriage requests from various suitors. Each have their own attributes, professions, and likes and dislikes, and views on children. The important thing here is to find one that is the best match for you little person, although the temptation to go after the one with the big, fat bank account and well-paying career will be hard to resist.

Virtual FamiliesWhether you choose to remain single or to take that marriage proposal, the next thing to think about is growing your family. As a single parent, you may be given the opportunity down the road to adopt a child. As a married couple, you can try to make a baby at any point in the game. Keep in mind that there are factors involved in this process, such as how long it has been since the last pregnancy, the mood of either of the parents, etc. It's not 100% guaranteed to produce offspring, but it usually does. Once a child is born, the mother will have control for the first few months. After that point, the child will be another member of the family, which will require the same behavioral shaping as the parents once did.

There are a number of other things that can and need to be done around the house during the course of the game. You'll notice almost immediately that the floor is in disrepair in sections of the house. There are a number of other problems, as well, such as the leaky watering hose outside, or the garden shed without a door handle. Many of these problems will require the purchase of tools and other items to complete which of course will require funds, so your career of choice is very important. Money is also used to buy house upgrades, such as bathroom fixtures or a new flat-screen TV.

Just like Virtual Villagers, Virtual Families continues to run even when the game isn't open. It is an important aspect of gameplay, since your family will continue to evolve, even when you are not around. As long as they have food your family can survive a couple of days without interaction, but if you're not going to be able to play for a couple of weeks, you may want to go in and pause the game before quitting. You don't want to come back to a house full of skeletons, do you?

Virtual Families 2 is out! Check out our review and walkthrough for Virtual Families 2: Our Dream House!

Children that you have will grow to about 18 years, and then go off to college. When it is time for the current generation to move on, you will be given the option to give the house and all of its assets to one of your kids. At that point, they will move in and the game cycle will start again. Going to the Family Screen will allow you to keep track of multiple generations of people that have lived in the house. How many generations can you create?

Analysis: At first glance, Virtual Families seems like little more than a stripped-down version of The Sims. The limited effect that you have on the environment of the home and the house itself is quite evident. You don't have the option of creating a different living space for your families; you can't even move the furniture to a different part of the room. With the exception of upgrades, there is little you can do the physical house. This allows you the time to focus on the interactions with your little people.

The level of interaction with the virtual people in the game is totally up to you. Unlike The Sims, you do not have to watch your person's every move. Your virtual people will do things like get up in the morning, go to work, and eat without extensive prodding from you, as long as they have the supplies and materials required to complete a task.

I've never been a huge fan of the character designs for the Virtual Village series, and the characters in Virtual Families are almost identical. Something about the way the head gets positioned on the body at times, depending on what the person is focusing on as opposed to where they are walking, or what they are working on, just seems unnatural.

Virtual Families is a natural progression of the Virtual Villagers series, and the results are quite good. While Last Day of Work has already announced a fourth Virtual Villagers game set for release later this year, I hope a sequel to Virtual Families isn't out of the question!

Virtual Families - General Information

Here is some general information for Virtual Families. More will be added as needed!

Gathering Collectibles

  • Collectibles can now be gathered by either children or adults.

  • When you pick up a duplicate collectible, your person will sell it online for extra money.

  • At the start of the game, only coins and leaves/twigs will show up. Later in the game, bugs start showing up. Finally, late in the game, the pieces of paper show up.

Ongoing Household Chores (done by both adults and children)

  • Pick up wrappers.

  • Pick up socks.

  • Clean away cobwebs.

  • Take out the garbage.

  • Pull weeds.

  • Clean dirt smudges.

Having Babies

  • Unlike in the Virtual Villagers games, it won't do any good to drop the adults onto each other over and over to produce a baby.

  • When the adults try to make a baby, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

  • After having a baby, the game will tell you if it's too soon to have another.

  • The youngest child has to be 2 to 4 years old before another baby will come.

  • Twins start coming in the second generation.

  • Purchase the Baby Boost medicine to increase the chances of having babies, but use only once as multiple uses will decrease its effectiveness.

  • A couple can have a maximum of six children.

Extra Activities

  • Drop an adult on the kitchen table to prepare a meal.

  • Sitting down to a meal adds to the "fed" bar on the details screen, especially for children.

  • Drop an adult in the laundry room to do laundry.

Varied Items in the Store

Note that varied items restock and refresh every four hours.

  • Delicious candy - $7

  • Various candy - $7

Salaries and Earning Money

Say, for example, your person has a salary of $60 per day. When you watch them work and hear the *ching* sound when they earn money, they are actually receiving 1/100 of their salary at that moment. The game doles out the salary over a period of time. You don't get it all at once when a work cycle completes. It accumulates constantly as the game is running as long as your people work on their careers steadily.

When first starting your family, you won't have a lot of money to splurge. But you will have plenty to buy groceries and start on the inexpensive upgrades (gradually). This is a long term game and it can take a couple of generations or more before you can purchase things like the treadmill and pinball machine.

Your people will get raises and promotions which will make it easier to buy more things. Some careers pay more than others, so those little people will naturally have more money to spend.

Please understand that it's not a problem when you see only 60 cents added to your bank balance. Be a little patient and enjoy the game. It's all part of virtual life. :)

Starting the New Generation

When a parent dies, you get a blue screen with instructions on how to start the new generation. The kids don't just come home from college on their own. If you missed the instructions, just go to the family page and click the "New Generation" button at the top of the page. You'll be able to scroll through all the children and choose the one who will continue the family.

Virtual Families - Repairs and Household Items

Many of the challenges in the game involve repairs and upgrades to the house. The following is a list of the repairs needed and how to do them. Some are recurring and others are one time only. We'll add to the list as needed.

Leaky Sink

Drop an adult on the bathroom sink and then drop him/her on the workshop. He/she will get a wrench and fix the sink.

Leaky Water Hose in Back Yard

  1. Purchase the waterproof tape in the store.

  2. Click it on the hose.

  3. Drop an adult on the kitchen sink to get a drink (this will reduce the water pressure).

  4. Drop the adult on the hose to repair it.

Bird Bath in Front Yard

  1. Purchase the fountain pump kit in the store.

  2. Click it on the bird bath.

  3. Drop two adults on the bird bath to install the pump (it's too heavy for just one adult alone).

Holes in the Floor

  1. Purchase floor repair kit in the store (good for only one repair each).

  2. Click it beside one of the holes in the floor.

  3. Drop an adult on the hole to begin repairs.

  4. Note: This is a long-term project and takes awhile to complete.

Workshop Wall

  1. Once you have repaired the hose in the back, purchase the wall compound from the store.

  2. Drop it near the bucket by the sandbox.

  3. Drop an adult on the wall compound.

  4. He/she will mix the compound with water and carry it to the workshop wall.

  5. Be sure to stay on top of the person because if they stop, the compound will dry up and you'll have to start over again.

  6. It also helps to put more than one person on the wall.

Blocked Toilet

Drop an adult on the toilet and he/she will fix it right away.

No Internet

Drop an adult on the computer to fix the router.

Repair Door to Shed

  1. Drop an adult on the gold doorknob in the sandbox. He/she will put it on the shed door.

  2. Drop adult on the welcome mat to retrieve the key. He/she will unlock the shed door.

Dryer Lint is on Fire

After getting the shed open, you'll find fire extinguishers inside. Use them on the dryer.

Oven is on Fire

After getting the shed open, you'll find fire extinguishers inside. Use them on the oven.

Water the Flowers

You have to have already repaired the hose and opened the shed for this one.

Drop an adult on the path outside the living room window so he "sees the window boxes." He will fetch a watering can from the shed, fill it at the back hose, and then water the flowers.

Cleaning Cobwebs

If you drop an adult on the right side of the bathroom sink 2 or 3 times, eventually he/she will jump around and clean cobwebs.

Clogged Shower

Drop an adult on the shower, then drop him/her in the laundry room on top of the bucket that contains the plunger.

Illnesses and the Cures

Your family will get sick from time to time and need to be given medicine. This is only for when they are sick, which will show up in the status box at the bottom of the screen, not for when they are weak or tired. You'll need to figure out what kind of illness they have by picking them up and seeing what is says in the activity box. You'll also hear a sound (coughing, sneezing, hiccupping, groaning) to help identify the illness. You may have to pick them up several times before you see the activity.

Here are the illnesses and the cures:

Hiccups

Get a drink of water either from the kitchen or bathroom sink.

Coughing

Purchase antitussive syrup in the store.

Sore throat

Purchase throat lozenges in the store.

Sneezing

Purchase antihistamine in the store.

Headache

Purchase anti-inflammatory pill in the store.

Stomachache

Purchase peptic syrup in the store.

Itchy

Purchase cortisone cream in the store.

For persistent illnesses or infection

Purchase penicillin in the store.

For serious illnesses or infections that won't go away

Purchase a doctor consultation in the store. You'll receive an email immediately telling you what the problem is. You may need to purchase Vancomycin in the store for very serious illnesses or infections. Use this only when recommended by the doctor.

Virtual Families FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Below is a list of some of the questions that get asked often. If you have a question about something, chances are someone else has had the same question. Please check this list before posting a comment. If you don't find an answer here, ask us in the comment thread and we'll do our best to help!

  1. What can I do to get my people's energy up?

    • There is an energy drink you can buy in the store, but it's random and is only one dose.

    • Also note that the problems with low energy have been corrected in an updated version of the game (1.00.05). If you have a previous version, go back to the site where you originally purchased the game and download it again.

  2. How do I get rid of hiccups?

  3. Have your person get a drink of water in the kitchen or in the bathroom.

  4. How do I get my people to chase gophers?

  5. This is something they do on their own. To get the trophy for chasing gophers, praise someone while "playing on the lawn" when there are gopher holes present.

  6. Why isn't the item I need for a repair in the store?

  7. The varied items in the store appear randomly and refresh every four hours in the most current version of the game (1.00.05). If the item you need isn't there, keep checking. It will turn up eventually.

  8. If one of my children goes with the talent scout, will he/she come back?

  9. No, they won't come back until you start the next generation. They'll be available along with the other children to take over the house when the time comes.

  10. Will the children come back after going to college?

  11. No, they don't come back from college. Same as with the talent scout, they will only be available to take over the house after the parents die.

  12. At what age do women stop having babies?

  13. As in Virtual Villagers 2 and 3, females cannot have babies after age 50. Even in their 40s, it's difficult.

  14. How do I pause the game?

  15. Use the space bar.

  16. How high do the career levels go?

  17. Careers top out at level 8 (master).

  18. How do I help my people who are depressed?

  19. They will get better over time. Give them treats like candy and fruit. Make sure there's plenty of food and they are fed. Buy household upgrades. Have them work on their career. Don't use the red hand on them for awhile. Praise them a lot. All of these things will help bring up their mood.

  20. How do I play multiple families?

  21. Click the player name on the menu screen and you will be given the option to start other families.

  22. What happens to the money in the bank when the parents die?

  23. The money will transfer to whichever child takes over for the new generation.

  24. How can I make more money?

  25. The best way is to gather duplicate collectibles. They are automatically sold online when one of your people picks them up. For extra, try dropping two people on the same collectible: pause using the space bar, drop first person, tap space bar twice to unpause and repause, drop second person. If your timing is good, both of them will pick up the collectible and you'll get double the money. Be careful, though, because children will often play train or have a giggle party when you drop them on top of each other!

  26. How do I get my family to prepare a meal?

  27. Drop an adult on the kitchen table.

  28. Can children work once they reach age 14?

  29. They can do adult chores and activities, but they can't work to earn money. Only the parents work on careers for money.

  30. How do I get the next generation to take over?

  31. When the parents die, a blue screen full of instructions will appear. Basically, it tells you that when you are ready for the next generation to take over, go to the family screen and click on the "New Generation" button at the top of the screen. You'll be able to scroll through all of the children of the current parents. Pick the one you want to carry on the family and click "adopt." Now the family will continue with that child.

  32. What happens to the siblings of the child I chose to continue the family?

  33. Nothing happens to them. They remain on the family tree, but they don't reappear in the game and you cannot play them after they have not been chose.

  34. Why won't my store refresh?

  35. There is a bug that prevents the store from refreshing. Press the R key while you are on the store screen to refresh the store and reset the schedule to where it will refresh every 4 hours. This is a one time only fix for the bug. You will not be able to refresh your store on demand.

  36. How do I help my people who are very weak?

  37. Being weak usually comes from being sick. Even after being cured, your people will be weak. Fruit and vitamins from the store helps a great deal. Also, make sure they have plenty of food and are fed. After that, it just takes time for them to get strong again.

  38. How do I find the red ball and what is it for?

  39. The red ball is just something extra the developers threw in. It's not required to solve any of the puzzles, nor can your people interact with it. To find the red ball, move the map to where you can reach the absolute upper and left most corner. Using just the hand cursor, pinch into that upper left corner and pull the red ball out. Note: you can't actually see the ball until you pull it out. Here's a screenshot:

    Red Ball

  40. Is there anything I can do to make my family have twins or triplets?

  41. As best we can tell, twins and triplets are completely random. They can happen at any point in the game and are a bit rare, especially triplets. There's nothing that will make them happen or help it along. It's just luck of the draw. One thing to consider, though... Multiples will only happen early in a family because of the six child limit. If there have been no triplets by the time child number 3 is born, there won't be any triplets for that family at all because it would put it over the six child limit. The game doesn't let that happen.

I have to say I did not enjoy this game. Something about the middle class, white, nuclear, heterosexual, suburban vibe put me off from the start. I mean it feels like a US conservative fantasy.

The gameplay, though effective in Virtual Villagers just seems banal... though there are a host of achievements to unlock I wasn't really interested. What made Virtual Villagers so compelling was the sense of discovery and adventure. Here, you can have kids, grow old and repair the house.

This is a Sims clone with out any of the features that made the Sims compelling... customization, the freedom to treat your Sims as well or as badly as you want and the sense of creating your own story with your family.

I admire Last Day of Work's games a lot, but this one failed to impress.

I actually have been enjoying this one, although it is not as exciting as the Virtual Villagers series. My first family is moving into late middle age, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

In order to open the shed,

after fixing the door knob, drop an adult on the welcome mat to find the key.

I have a clogged shower and nothing I've tried works. I only have about $70. Do I have to buy something?

New to jayisgames, here, though I have known of the site for a while.
On Virtual Families, I have to agree with Arcysparky, LDW has missed the mark this time around. Admittedly, I only tried the trial version, but "Families" did not interest me enough to purchase the full version. I will just have to be satisfied with LDW's "Villagers" series for the time being. (c'mon, VV4!)

To Gouda:

We haven't been about to figure out the clogged shower yet, but if you exit and restart the game, it will go away for awhile.

To mstepanik:

Thanks for that info. I'll add it to the walkthrough.

To Grinnyp:

I'm enjoying the game, too. One thing I really like is that with it having so few people, I get to know them better. When the villages get up to 90 people, it was so impersonal.

To gouda:

For a clogged shower (or toilet):

Look in the laundry room. On the north wall of the laundry room between the closet and the bench is a bucket that has a plunger and a duster in it. Try dropping one of your adults on it. If that doesn't work, there is a tool box in the workshop on the west wall. Drop your adult there to get a wrench (this works with leaking sinks).

Hope that helps.

What do I do for a dryer lint fire? I don't see a fire extinguisher in my house.

Reply

I'm having the same problem with an oven fire, alaira.

Aha!

There's fire extinguishers in the shed!

[Edit: Spoiler tags added. -Pam]

Alaira,

you need a fire extinguisher, which is in the shed. You should see instructions for getting the shed open in the walk-through above. Once the shed is open, just drop one of your adults (or, I think, a teenager over 14) in the shed and they will grab an extinguisher to put out a dryer fire or an oven fire.

Ok, thanks. I've been trying to avoid spoilers on how to unlock things, but I thought that I should know how to handle a fire. I also found out that you can simply reload the game to reset household disasters that occur, so I can avoid them in the meantime.

Ugh. If I could start with a family of 4, I think this could give me enough information to see if I want to purchase the game.

However, starting with an individual, and getting to watch him take nearly 15 minutes to create and eat a meal (I know, real time) is just too tedious.

This could be sort of fun, but the thing that keeps VV and the sequels interesting is the variety - you can have a group of villagers working on one thing, and then go on to another group. You're not stuck watching one person live out their slow, solitary life.

Reply
Ducatisti April 27, 2009 9:42 PM

And these are just visual irritations, but why do these people look like South Park's Cartman at the Special Olympics when they're kissing each other?

And why is the baby attached like some growth to the hip of the mother? How difficult would it be to stick 'em in a backpack? I know that the baby was stuck to the mother's hip in VV, but since they're on a deserted island there, I can cut them some slack. These folks live in suburbia, go to WalMart and by a backpack for goodness sake!

Can anyone help? I have brought this game and I don't have a broken chair on the porch, but I do have a bucket that I can't figure out what to do with. When i drop a person onto it, they just say they're confused.

To Ducatisti:

It helps to have more than one family going at a time. Especially when they show very different traits. I have one couple who are both incredibly stubborn and they have three boys who are all troublemakers!

To Ange:

There was a broken chair in the beta version of the game that has been removed for the release. My apologies for the confusion. I'll update the walkthrough information.

For the bucket, look under the repairs section for the Workshop Wall.

Has anyone managed 50 trophies yet? I'm at 49, and as soon as one of my little family hits 60 (she's 59 right now), I'll get my 50th trophy. And then my 51st, and you get a trophy for hitting 50 trophies.

I have to say, this is not as much fun as any of the virtual villagers. Yes, it's much more intimate, as you have fewer people to keep track of. However, it is rather slow moving, and I'm getting seriously ticked off with agents showing up at my front door to take my kids off to careers in Europe and Japan! :)

Crap, my people hit 60 and died! Has anyone managed to make 70?

Water the Flowers

You have to have already repaired the hose and opened the shed for this one.

Drop an adult on the path outside the living room window so he "sees the window boxes." He will fetch a watering can from the shed, fill it at the back hose, and then water the flowers.

Cleaning Cobwebs

If you drop an adult on the right side of the bathroom sink 2 or 3 times, eventually he/she will jump around and clean cobwebs.

On the workshop wall:

You can drop multiple adults on this project to complete it quickly. This will save you from having to repurchase the wall compound if it hardens up in the bucket.

I'm curious about the picture pieces...

Does there seem to be a correlation between having the shed open and finding picture pieces to collect?

I have been playing through three generations already, and I never found any picture pieces until I got the shed open. And once I learned how to do it, in the games where I opened the shed very early, I started finding picture pieces right away.

Just wondering aloud!

Do they argue every time you try? Or do they try and just don't have kids? If they try and don't have kids, you can buy a medicine that makes them fertile.

If they don't want kids, I think the best that you can hope for is a kid showing up at the door wanting to be adopted. I've had that happen 3 or 4 times.

I have several questions

1. It is taking forever to make money to buy stuff. Are any strategies better than the other? (earning bank interest, only have generations work on career, etc?)

2. I keep getting an email that says the birds are tropical.... what does that mean?

3. Does upgrading the workspaces first help careers that much faster?

Reply

I purchased the game and seriously regret it. The game play is super slow, no one is coming close to maximizing their career. Because I am impatient, I have been changing the time on the computer several times but, then they keep saying their life is going too quickly.
How can I make more money so I can do the career upgrades?

You first have to get the tape and tape up the hose then you can mix the compound to do the hole.

Nina:

One good strategy to make money more quickly is to concentrate on finding collectibles. Once you have one of an item in your collection, you can sell duplicates. They sell for $5.00 common, $15.00 uncommon, and $50.00 rare. Especially if you have kids to drop on the collectibles and sell them (thus the parents keep working and earning money as well) you can rack up money fairly quickly. Also, if you are lucky, there is a random event where someone will offer you a lot of money for your entire collections (including the pieces of old photo). This can net you thousands if your collections are full or nearly full. It means you have to start over again collecting, but it got me enough money to get an office upgrade.

In the store under the "varfied items section" (which changes every 10 - 12 hours)there will sometimes be "multivitamins" for sale. If they show up, buy them and feed them to your weak peeps.

To improve health -

In addition to the vitamins, it helps to purchase the organic groceries. Also, give them the fruit treats, which are healthy. It will take time to recover from being weak, but these things help.

I just have to share this with y'all. I have a family in which the mother has blue and black dredlocks. The father has black poofy hair. I thought sure those two would produce some awesome cute kids. How will the bird bath get repaired? And how will the energy levels increase?

Reply

To Pari:

For the bird bath, please check the walkthrough guide at the top of the page under Repairs and Household Items.

As for energy, the energy drink definitely helps. And I've noticed that sometimes when I start the game, they all have more energy, but I don't know exactly why. I think maybe it's connected to overall health.

I was very disappointed with this game. Very repetitive and the biggest puzzle was unlocking the shed. I'm looking forward to Virtual Villagers 4 and hope LDW redeem themselves. My opinion only.

Adopting kids is really just a random event in the game. It may be more likely to happen if your people are childless, but there's no guarantee.

Reply

To Tasha (again):

I just had a family of five adopt a child that showed up on a doorstop. The new child brought their family up to the maximum of six children. So, it doesn't have to be single parents or childless couples who get to adopt kids.

To Grinnyp:

I tried the double dropping on the collections, too. Half the time they end up playing train or having a giggle party instead of picking up the coin. Lol. So, just be aware of that.

To Sue:

About cleaning the walls -

Make sure you're following all of the steps. You need to have the hose in the back repaired first. Drop the wall compound next to the green bucket in front. Then drop an adult on the green bucket and he/she will mix up the compound. They don't see the compound, but they do see the empty green bucket. Once they start cleaning the walls, make him/her stay on it until it's done because the compound will harden if they walk away for too long and you'll have to start over. Having more than one person work on it also helps.

I do have all of my coins, and would like to do a print screen to show skyprincess what they look like. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that in here.

I'm in agreement that this is nothing like the Virtual Villagers series. I had one family, and I named the mom after myself, and the kids after my kids. I wish I wouldn't have done that. I woke up one morning, turned on the computer, and the mom was dead! That was weird. I've learned in my second generation to name these people with names NOT in my own family!!! LOL!!! It sure would make things more fun if we could make the game run in faster time, like in VV.

About energy levels -

Their energy levels will gradually get better as you move further into the game. Sometimes when I open my game for the day, they are all rested and fine for no apparent reason. Maybe it's the down time while the game isn't running. Naps and going to bed don't help at all. It's not harmful for them to get low on energy. They just won't do much of anything before they go take a nap or go to bed. The energy drink helps, but of course, that's just one dose whenever it happens to show up in the store.

The weirdest thing ever just happened! You know how they die, you find them lying on the bed in state with a status of extremely weak, then their "ghost" will stand there on the bed waving at you, then you get the notice that they died, then their body fades away, then the "ghost". Well, I knew that it would be coming soon in my third family, so I had an energy drink standing by. I opened up the program this morning and sure enough Du was lying on the bed, his ghost waving at me. I slammed him with the energy drink before the notice of his death could pop up, and he got up from the bed! But so did his ghost! I fed him some multi-vitamins and he went from extremely weak to just weak. And he started wandering around doing things and so did his ghost! I could click on the ghost (still extremely weak) but couldn't manipulate him. A few minutes later the ghost died, but the original Du was still alive, and now depressed in mourning for himself! How weird is this? I wonder how long I can keep him alive without a soul . . .

In the meantime, I've split my first two families on two different tracks. In the first one, I'm aiming to finish all the home improvements (all I've got left is the wide screen TV and the pinball machine). In the second, I'm concentrating on workplace upgrades. I've got the 2nd level office and 2nd level kitchen. I'm primarily aiming for the 3rd level kitchen, because I have a sneaking suspicion (just a hunch) that that is the only way to find someone making a latte. :-)

Reply

To Jennifer:

About watering the plants -

You need to drop an adult on the watering cans in the shed. When you hover him/her over the door to the shed, it will say "sees watering cans" and that's the spot you need to drop.

About children working -

The children will leave home when they are 18. Then when it's time for the next generation, you will get to choose from the children and they will each have a job then.

I am among those disappointed with this game. It's not up to par with the VV games. I certainly miss being able to change the speed of the game, which I suppose would be impossible if it's "in your time zone" but if that's the case why do they age years in a day or two?

At any rate, I usually check in on them before I go to bed, and then when I get home to work, and they're usually sick and/or exhausted.

It's not much fun to watch then sleep. Also, I agree about the pet comment. I got a dog and I didn't notice an increase in happiness, and truly, no interaction. What's the point?

The only thing they seem to actually enjoy is putting away the groceries.

*Question - how do you know how much food you have left?*

Reply

Cymantha Sanderfer -

Well, the perfect match and winning the lottery are completely random. However, you can better your odds to finish the bug collection by making it rain whenever you get your hands on a bottle of tropical rain, and searching for the bugs while it rains. Also, the bugs come out more at night, so searching at night in the rain is your best bet to find bugs. There's no particular way to make the two that you need appear, but the more it rains the better your chances.
