Weekday Escape

JessIt's a truly nasty day in New York. Not that I don't love snow (I do! It can be beautiful!) but when the wind is blowing and the flakes are sticking to your eyelashes and you soak your boots in a Escape from Dr. Ichie's Cafedeceptively deep, muddy puddle…well, that's when you want to throw down your hat and see if it's too late to apply to that nice graduate program in Honolulu. Alas, I doubt I shall be eluding the winter doldrums anytime soon. At least I can console myself with the sweet, sunny Escape From Dr. Ichie's Cafe!

New from Bianco Bianco, creators of Mystery House: Escape from Beginning Room and Dr. Ichie's Room, Escape from Dr. Ichie's Cafe places you once more in the grasp of the mysterious doctor. The mysterious, somewhat accommodating doctor, that is—he or she was, after all, kind enough to lock you in a cozily wood-paneled cafe, with the sounds of the ocean to soothe you as you search. Nice, right? Even better is the fact that the cafe is filled with clever puzzles that tread the fine line between challenging and infuriating, providing a mentally stimulating experience that never crosses into head-banging-on-table territory.

The game's graphics are very nice, cleanly rendered and quite realistic, and pixel-hunting is at a minimum. As always, a save feature would have been nice…but really, I have very little bad to say about Escape from Dr. Ichie's Cafe. Is it groundbreaking? No. Especially innovative? Not really. It is, however, a well-designed, charming, highly entertaining escape game that will keep you happily involved for half an hour to forty-five minutes. Moreover, it is a marked step up from Bianco Bianco's other creations, definitely more clever and sophisticated than the previous games, which bodes very well for the developer's future offerings.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Dr. Ichie's Cafe Walkthrough!!! It's my first one!!! (^-^)

  1. Click the door and pick up the black dart from the bottom right of the door.

  2. Move back and go left once. pick up the blue dart on the table and then click on the mannequin to get a stick.

  3. Move back and go left once. Click on the middle cabinent to get a red dart and then take the palm tree can thing on the shelf above it. Place the palm tree on the white circle on the left shelf to open the bottom left cabinent and get the wave coin. Place the palm tree in your inventory for now. Open the Right cabinent and note the diagram for later.

  4. Move back and click on the right edge of the bar. Click on the refrigerator and open the bottom section. At the left corner of the top shelf (on the door) you should see a small shiny object (I thought it was a hinge at first) click it to reveal the final dart (green).

  5. Move back and click the stove area. Note that there is a box on the stove/sink that opens up to reveal four slots, we will come back to this later. Instead click on the space [corner] where the cabinent meets the wall (the space I'm talking about can be seen underneath the stove). You should see a shiny gold object inbetween the cabinent and the wall. Use the stick to get it out to reveal a gold dolphin.

  6. Move back 2x and left 2x. Click on the ornate cabinent. If you look closely you should see 4 numbers on the door.

    3,5,9,4

On top of the cabinent is a combination screen where the numbers need to put in. This is where the darts come in. Go back and then right to the dart board. Each dart corresponds to a digit in the lock, with a bit of experimentation you should get the combination:

    red - 3, green - 5, blue - 9, and black - 4

After this the ornate cabinent should open up to reveal a star coin as well as another diagram

  7. Move back from the cabinent and left one screen to the Hawaii poster. Click on the wood box right next to the poster and place the palm tree in the top slot. Open the hatch underneath to reveal the coconut tree coin. Place the palm tree in the inventory for now.

  8. Move back and go left one screen where the mannequin and the ship's wheel is. Click on the Wheel and place the golden dolphin in the middle where it's outlined. *This is for later:

Place the palm tree on the table cloth in front of the mannequin to get the numbers:

    4,3,5,1

...this will be used at the end screen.

  9. Go back to the bar (the screen with the fridge and sink) and go to the cabinent on the far end. Click on the button next to the dolphin on the front to reveal the final coin, the dolphin coin, and the last diagram.

  10. Go back and then click on the stove with the box on it. Open the box and arrange the coins in order by the diagrams you found throughout the room.

    wave, star, dolphin, coconut

Close the lid and click on the handle to reveal a secret compartment containing the key to get out!

  11. End Screen: click the coins to reveal another combination lock and enter the numbers we got from the table cloth earlier

    4,3,5,1

and click "the end." Apparently you will earn a coin of happiness for your efforts.

Very nice, laid back game. Didn't take half an hour though.

I couldn't figure out what to do with

the 4 digits above 'the end' at.. well, the end. I tried filling in the same numbers from the dartboard, but that didn't do anything. Maybe I got the order wrong..?

About the numbers at the end:

The code is found by placing the palm tree cocktail shaker on the table near the statue/coat hanger guy. The placemat has the code, and you can see the reflection in the cocktail shaker.

Bad news? I'm stuck again... I've used everything but the stick so I'm thinking it has something to do with that.

the coins that cause numbers to pop up when you click on them and the "The eND" that lights up when you click on it?

Out, no hints. I think that's my first time through one without needing any hints. Quick and easy.

This game took me 5 minutes :| Well, it's good start, although there's too much pixel hunting, and not enough thinking.

I'm having trouble with where to put the coins once I have them all, but I think I know about the numbers at the end.

The table right in front of the statue of the man is missing the salt and pepper shakers. If you put the shiny can there, you can read four numbers

perhaps use those at the end?

I know I'm getting good at these because it's the first one I finished without hints. Took about 10 minutes too! Yeah! If anyone needs help let me know. I'll be over here gloating.

Anyone else having loading trouble? I'm just getting a big white square. Any ideas, or am I being impatient?

Reply

Well I'm feeling dumb because it's been more than five minutes...

Can someone give me a hint? I've found and figured out these things:

The four darts, used the dart to open the cupboard.

I've found three coins... the star, wave and coconut tree.

I'm assuming there is a dolphin coin and, based on clues around the room, I know the order of the coins.

I also have the cup thing, and used it in the hutch and box to open doors. Then on the table to get the numbers off it.

Finally, I have a stick.

A gentle poke in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

:)

Forgot to add...whatever it is I'm supposed to do, I haven't yet opened the dolphin cupboard or made use (if any) of the ship's wheel.

I don't want to read an entire walkthrough, but just have a question: do you have to understand how to play darts? Or is it a simplistic use of the board? I have all but one item and I'm pretty certain I need the dart board to find it--just don't know if I have to understand THAT game too!

Reply
Anonymous February 5, 2009 5:12 PM

What does the little blue dolphin signify? The one that keeps going in circles when I approach certain areas?

Reply

Heh, that was satisfying. Just like the last ones

Reply

Sarah,

No need to know how to play darts. Most items are in fairly plain view... I like that the cursor changes over hot spots so you don't have to wonder, yet there is ONE well hidden hot spot that won't show up unless you have a certain item in use as you're looking.

Quite possibly the easiest escape game I have ever played. Took me about 15 minutes, and the only I've ever gotten through without using a walkthrough or hints at all.

Well, easy might not be a good word for it... at least, it's the most logical escape game I've ever played. Never once was I stuck feeling like I had no idea what the hell the game wanted me to do next, only to find out it was some stupid pixel hunting I missed, or some item combination that doesn't make any sense.

Dr. Ichie's Cafe HINT-THROUGH

For when you just want a slight hint to push you in the right direction. The more spoiler tags opened, the more blatant the information.

THE DARTBOARD

FINDING DARTS

Black Dart

It's on the way out.

Click on exit door, the black dart is on floor in bottom right corner.

Blue Dart

It's in plain sight.

Facing the door, turn left. The blue dart is on the back table where the salt and pepper should be.

Green Dart

Think cool thoughts.

Behind the bar, there is a refrigerator.

The green dart is inside the door slot of the fridge.

Red dart

Under the tree.

In the tall cabinet / hutch.

In the door under the palm tree cylinder.

The palm tree cylinder must be in place for the door to open.

USING DARTS

Look around the room and consider the number of darts you have.

Why do you have that many darts?

You have four darts, just enough to hit four places on the dartboard.

Put a dart on the dartboard then look around the room.

You should find a relationship between the dartboard and another object in the room.

The chest with fancy gold scrollwork on its doors.

Look closely at the doors and look at the top of the chest.

Perhaps the chest's code and the dartboard are related somehow.

Have you noticed what happens when you move the dart to another number?

Try a different colored dart on that number instead.

Now look around. Perhaps the colors relate to a certain order.

The color of the dart determines the digit placement in a code.

Red is the first digit.

Green is the second digit, blue is the third, and black is the fourth digit.

What is the code?

Look again at the chest's doors.

3594

OPENING DOORS/OTHER ITEMS

The Tall Cabinet/Hutch

Examine the shiny silver, palm tree cylinder in the middle of the hutch.

Notice how you can take the cylinder and replace it.

Place the palm tree cylinder on the circle above the left door of the cabinet.

Open the left cabinet door (palm tree cylinder must be in place above it) and get the WAVE COIN.

Look at the wooden box near the "Hawaian Beach" poster.

What item do you have that might fit there?

Put the cylinder in the box.

Open the box to get the COCONUT TREE COIN.

That hatted figure holding a stick is odd, isn't it?

You can take the walking stick from the figure.

Are there any hard to reach places?

Try behind the bar.

Facing the sink area, with the stick in use, click a spot under the stove behind the dolphin cupboard (it's tricky to hit the right spot).

Use the stick to get the GOLD DOLPHIN EMBLEM

The chest with the fancy gold scrollwork must have something useful behind those locked doors.

It appears to need a numbered code to be opened.

Are there any other objects around the room with numbers?

The dartboard.

Once you get the chest opened, you will find . . .

The STAR COIN

The gold dolphin cupboard next to the stove.

Where else in the room do you see that dolphin?

Look at the ship's wheel.

The item you need is not far from the dolpin cupboard.

Have you used the stick yet?

Use the stick to get the emblem behind the cupboard (see hints for the HATTED FIGURE).

Put the emblem in the ship's wheel to open the dolphin cupboard.

In the cupboard is the DOLPHIN COIN.

BLACK BOX NEXT TO THE SINK

Something is missing from four round slots inside the black box.

Have you found anything that could go there? If not, continue to search around the room.

Coins fit in those slots. Search through the cafe for the missing coins.

The coins can be found in the following locations . . .

WAVE COIN:

The tall cabinet / hutch

COCONUT TREE COIN:

The wooden box next to the "Hawaian Beach" poster.

STAR COIN:

The chest with the fancy gold scrollwork.

DOLPHIN COIN:

The dolphin cupboard next to the stove.

USING THE COINS

Search the room for three hints about the coins' placement in the box.

Match the symbols on the coins to the symbols you find around the room.

The clues for the order of the coins can be found in the following locations:

Inside chest with the fancy gold scrollwork; on right door of tall cabinet (inside); inside dolphin cupboard.

The coins must go in this order . . .

wave, star, dolphin, coconut tree.

Once you place the coins, close the box and open it again . . .

A key! But are you ready to exit?

. . . there's one more thing to do.

Remember the palm tree cylinder and its shiny surface?

When placed on the back table (near the hatted figure), numbers from the white table cloth are reflected on its surface.

You haven't used those numbers yet, so keep them in mind before you leave the cafe.

LEAVING THE CAFE

Have you looked everywhere and found what you need to exit? Go back through the other hints if you need help.

If you have a key, you are ready to leave. But there is one more unused piece of information, no?

That palm tree cylinder had a shiny surface for a reason.

Use the cylinder to find a code.

When placed on the back table (near the hatted figure), numbers from the white table cloth are reflected on its surface.

The code is . . .

4351. Enter it after you exit by clicking on the coins which appear before you.

You get a special coin image along with your congratulations.

p.s. Please forgive any redundancy; Gabeknight posted an awesome walkthrough before I got this one up! But since I've already done this, no use in wasting it . . . maybe it can be useful for more subtle help. Thanks :)

Reply

I guess my confusion with the darts is that I am expecting some sort of logic to the order. It sounds from the hint in gabe's walkthrough that there is no logic? So I just guess until I get it right?

Grrrr.... anyone figure out loading problems? I've been trying for weeks, so I doubt it is due to site traffic. I get a blank white screen only... I am on dialup, but I have left it running overnight.

Reply

No idea Meowfunk. I just tried (with a clear browser cache) and I saw a white screen for about 3 seconds total. Then the game loaded as expected.

Try reloading the browser window? Or empty your browser cache and try again? If all that doesn't work, try updating your Flash Player.
