PsychotronicMusic BounceMusic Bounce, the latest release from Rowland Rose (Scorching Earth) at Let's Make a Game, is a bit like Breakout, but with an unlikely musical twist. Each level presents you with a different layout of colored bricks. Your job is to wipe them all out by striking them with ammunition from an array of gates on the left side of the screen.

The gameplay is set to an 8-beat musical loop. Click on a gate once to activate it, and once more to deactivate. Once you turn on a gate, every 8 beats it will release a destructive ball, which will travel from left to right, ricocheting off bricks as it encounters them. Destroyed bricks regenerate over the course of that same 8 beats, and you can only pass a level by keeping them all inactive simultaneously, even if it's only for a moment. Therefore, if you set the correct gates to fire at the correct times, the bouncing trajectories should hit every target, all within the same short period of time. Each level imposes a limit on the number of gates you can activate, indicated in the sidebar on the far left.

There are a hefty 50 levels to tackle, but the reward for completing a level in Music Bounce goes beyond the mere satisfaction of victory. Each rectangle you strike releases an instrumental tone or drum sample, and thus their rhythmic destruction can produce a back beat, a bass line, or a melody, depending on how the level is designed. Each level is both a puzzle and a musical arrangement. Like all the games at Let's Make a Game, Music Bounce comes with a level editor, so you can compose your own brainteasing soundscapes.

Analysis: Music Bounce is not a pretty game. The colors are probably paler than they need to be, and the graphical detail is the bare minimum required to get the point across. It might actually have looked better if Rose had gone for a completely retro style like classic Breakout, solid rectangles of color and all. The audio sounds great, of course, although if your computer runs Flash with any lag at all, your experience will be marred by scratchy sound effects and synchronization problems. It's not much fun playing a rhythm game that can't keep a beat, and I can't help but wonder if the code could be better optimized for slower processors.

But if everything is running properly, Music Bounce can be magical. It's great fun discovering the hidden melodies in each new configuration of blocks, and you have some freedom to syncopate the different sections of a song to your own liking. The real challenge sometimes, rather than just completing the level, is to get the track sounding just right. It would be nice if a puzzle could last longer than 8 beats, to allow for more complicated compositions, but there's still a fair amount of variety. If you got hung up on the first level of Scorching Earth, you'll be happy to find a much smoother learning curve on this game, but watch out for the occasional difficulty spike after the first 10 levels.

Music Bounce Walkthrough

  • There are 15 registers, split here into 3 groups of 5 registers each.

  • Each register can be opened on measure 1 through 8.

  • Unless otherwise indicated, first try opening gates in order from top to bottom as indicated in the (left to right) solution.

  • If a solution doesnt work then you may have to open the gates in a different order, or return to the Level Select screen and start again with the level fresh.

  • If level solutions presented here continue to fail to work for you, try a different browser (Chrome is recommended), or a faster computer.

First! And does anybody knows how to do level 6?

I'm so happy with this game. It's the only (though there aren't many) game that blends music creation and puzzles well. I can't believe it took this long to figure out how to execute this concept.

level 6:

Activate the node in between the yellow bars, of course... then the node above the green bar on the lower left. The timing has to be such so that the yellow bars aren't in the way, and it will bounce up and clear out the other greens.

I'm stuck on 9, myself.

Reply

Nevermind, I got 9:

They bounce off the bottom, too.

Holy crap this game is cool like the other side of the pillow!

Nice game!
Can't get past lvl 12 though... there's one red bar I can't hit...

Reply

I totally agree with the review where it says "The real challenge sometimes, rather than just completing the level, is to get the track sounding just right." I just completed level 9, but it doesn't really sound like anything.

Here's my solution for level 9:

Numbering the 15 gates with the top as 1 and the bottom as 15, a working solution is

gate 1 open at beat 1

gate 6 open at beat 1

gate 8 open at beat 3

gate 14 open at beat 2

Reply

This game starts out deceptively easy, then gets fearsome quickly. By level 15, you really need a lot of trial and error...

That said, any idea on 17?

Reply

I'm stuck on 15...

It would be cool if when you first start a stage, a clip of what the level is supposed to sound like (when done in the most correct way) plays. Then you get...bonus points or a secret level or something if you can do all the levels correctly.

Reply

I doubt this is what they had in mind for level 12, but:

gate2: 7, gate3: 8, gate4: 8, gate5: 5, gate6: 3, gate7: 4, gate10: 8

Reply

Figured out 15 (i don't know how)

Tips for 17:

Only use the bottom 6 gates.

Whenever there are blocks you have to hit more than once, they make consecutive 8-beat sets not equal anymore.

I can't get passed level 10. I can get them all to play without them loading fully, but nothing happens. There must be something I'm not getting.

I am REALLY stuck on level 13. I know which balls to release to hit every bar, but I can't get the timing down. At one point, I had the bottom of half of the screen going perfectly, but as soon as I tried to get the top working with it all, everything started to mess up. Any suggestions?

Reply

What an excellent game.

I'm halfway through and half been writing a walkthrough, and testing my solutions has always worked thus far. However, it seems that certain levels require a bit of playing round with the beats first so not sure if I ought to bother with posting it once I finish - I'm not sure there is a "technically correct solution" for later levels.

I do know my solutions work in the end though so maybe it's worth posting anyhow...

For level 13, this was my end solution:

000030810002800

My notation is the beat of each gate where 0 represents "leave it alone". Bear in mind that you can't set always set the traps in vertical order as if there's a block right in front of a trap, you'll need to trigger another beat first to clear it.

I've re-tested this on #13 and it worked first time.

    Tenth Gate: 1

  3. First Gate: 1
    Seventh Gate: 1
    Second Gate From Bottom: 1

  4. First Gate: 1

    Second Gate From Bottom: 1

  5. Seventh Gate: 2
    Eighth Gate: 1

  6. Eighth Gate: 1
    Tenth Gate: 2

  7. Seventh Gate: 4
    Eighth Gate: 1
    Ninth Gate: 2

  8. Second Gate: 1
    Fourth Gate: 1
    Tenth Gate: 1
    Thirteenth Gate: 1

  9. First Gate: 1
    Sixth Gate: 1
    Eighth Gate: 1
    Fourteenth Gate: 1

  10. Second Gate: 1
    Sixth Gate: 1
    Eleventh Row: 1
    Fourteenth Gate: 1

Please note this is my first walkthrough, and I tried to make it as easy to understand as possible and tried to make the music sound good. On another note, any level where all the Gates are '1' it can be any beat, as long as they are all the same. Thank you.

Reply

oh my gosh this is ACTUALLY an amazing game! i LOVE it the "author" is a genius i couldn't find anything bad about it other than its hard to make the blippy music to actually go on beats most of it didn't sound right, one beat at a time sounded good though i just played around with that for awhile...but otherwise ingenious

Reply

Tip for level 24:

It's kind of cheating, but just because you can only have 6 gates open, doesn't mean you can only have 6 balls on the screen. If you open a gate and let it release its ball, closing the gate won't make the ball disappear.

LEVEL 50 IS NUTS!! 7 gates, but a ton of blocks!!

Reply

Possible techniques for level 50?

1. Set gate 8 to release at beat 8. Let a ball release. Set gate 9 to release at beat 8. Reset gate 8. Now gate 9 will be able to remove 3 blocks from the first column. I think this is a "quirk" of the mechanics. The ball goes between two blocks right as they're reappearing, so it just removes those blocks again and can bounce to a third.

2. Set g8 to 8. Set g9 to 7 and g10 to 8. Reset g8. Set g11 to 7, reset g9. Now the balls from g10 and g11 each remove 2 blocks from the first column. I've been trying to propogate this technique through the main body of blocks, but I only get around the center column.

Some combinations of these techniques are possible.

Most blocks I've been able to remove at once so far is 39.

I noticed that the order you may open a gate changes the way it works...
For exemple: if you want to balls to hit a block at same time, if you open the top gate first, than the bottow, the top ball hits the block, but not the second one... If you start mit the bottom ball, this one will hit the block.
So, for me some walkthroughs doesn't work...

i have a walktrough for lv 12,it was found COMPLETELY by accident.I reched 12 and could win and was getting exasperated.innnally i simply clicked gate up to max bottom, which is i just pressed gate 1 2 3 4 5 6 and 7.LOL.If you still don't get it,press the gates from top to bottom. You'll find out that you'll get it LOL.That was funny my mouth nearlly hung open :D hope this helps

19 code didn't work so I developed a new one.

For level 50

The order is not important just click 8-14 rather fast and it will work. if you wait too long between each click it will fail.
