The Goat in the Grey FedoraThe Goat in the Grey Fedora is a strange and offbeat point-and-click adventure with a black and white film noir atmosphere. The game's highpoint is definitely its sense of humor. Not only that, it actually has a plotline, which, as the title implies, has to do with a goat. In a grey fedora.

The game begins just as all cliché film noir types do: You're a detective in a smoke-filled office sitting with your feet on the desk when a dame walks in and asks you something totally bizarre. Within the game are even references to other noir type films like Casablanca, which you may recognize.

Written by Mark Darin, Ron "AAlgar" Watt, and Jason Ellis, the game was produced by Pinhead Games. It is evident that quite a lot of work was put into the game, as it looks fantastic—save for those awful faces. Unfortunately, the game is short and has a few puzzles that will leave you scratching your head, even if the solution is fairly logical. The black and white atmosphere and the fitting soundtrack create a sense of immersion that is both engaging and entertaining. And, as an added bonus, the ending is quite good. Plus there is a hidden extra at the end, a-la Stongbad-style.

Nick Bounty: The Goat in the Grey Fedora Walkthrough

You start out in your office.

  1. Best idea would be to grab the spy kit on the shelf behind you.

  2. Also take the ruler on your desk, you'll need them both later on.

  3. Walk out the door, and you'll see the map.

  4. Only 3 areas are open currently, but as you progress, more will open.

  5. For right now, head to the law office in the buisness district.

  6. Talk to the secretary and select the option "Actually, I'm looking to rent his office. I'm a lawyer." it's the third option down.

  7. Select "Habeas Corpus", "Ex post facto", and "Modus operandi".

  8. You get into the office.

  9. While in the office, all you should grab is the tape, seeing as you can't do much else currently.

  10. Now head back to the secretary and show her the goat picture (click on your inventory, click on the goat picture, click the hand icon, then click on the secretary).

  11. Now head to chinatown.

  12. Head into the farthest shop away from you.

  13. A crazy chinese guy should greet you.

  14. Speak to him again after the entrance scene.

  15. Buy the abstract blob and the black lightbulb.

  16. Leave and head into the next shop.

  17. Look at the blob, you'll find out it's just some silly putty.

  18. Speak to the english guy.

  19. Show him the picture.

  20. Try the spy camera on the mailing list. The stupid cheap camera doesn't work.

  21. Speak to the english guy again and ask to get on the mailing list.

  22. Attatch the blob to the blank card, and then give it back the the english guy.

  23. Select Nick Tronty as your name.

  24. Speak to the english guy. Now you have the address!

  25. Watch the cut scene.

  26. Head to the news stand now.

  27. Buy the Modern Sculptor magazine.

  28. Ask to be in the show.

  29. Since you dont have a stickpuppet, you will have to make one.

  30. Head back to the law office and into the room with the copier.

  31. Copy your face.

  32. Stick the paper onto the ruler, then attach it with the tape.

  33. Head back to the news stand.

  34. Show the puppet to the girl puppet. It will play a demented scene.

  35. Head out, you already have the magazine.

  36. Go to Mr. Tosser's house in Private Hills.

  37. After the cut scene, head into the fake's room.

  38. Read the magazine you got, then turn off the farthest lamp.

  39. Remove the lightbulb and put the black lightbulb in.

  40. Turn the lamp on.

  41. Look at the goat statues, then turn off the other lamp.

  42. Look at the statues again.

  43. After the cutscene, head out into the entrance.

  44. Then go back to the chinatown.

  45. Go to the resturant and talk to Sam.

  46. Select the third option down.

  47. Talk to him again and select the 3rd option again.

  48. Head outside and get kidnapped.

  49. After the cut scene, kick the corndog into the cannon.

  50. Try the plyers on the ropes. Again, the cheap piece of junk breaks. So now what?

  51. Burn through the ropes with your match.

  52. Open the crate, and be attacked by...monkeys! Wow, this game is weird.

  53. Use the scoop tractor, you unearth an ancient civilization.

  54. Let the strangness ensue.

  55. A giant kraken shows up. Goodlord.

  56. Grab the bomb and feed it to the overgrown sushi (the kraken).

  57. Climb in the hole.

  58. Head to Kitty's house in the Residential area.

  59. Head into the next room. The creeps show up again.

  60. Search the goat remains. You get a key.

  61. Head back to the lawyer's office.

  62. Use the key on the safe.

  63. Go back the the chinaman who offered to make you a goat.

  64. Speak to him.

  65. Go back to Kitty's house.

  66. Watch the cut scene.

  67. Distract Kitty with the hand puppet 3 times to use up her bullets.

  68. Watch the end game cut scene.

Really clever and really original. This game is really fun. And the hints page is pretty funny too.

Reply

Cute game, Jay. It was a lot of fun to play, and didn't cause much brain damage (I had just finished My Diamond Baby - it may be a week before the swelling goes down!)

Reply

Thanks a lot. I absolutely love the guys over at Pinhead games. The previous adventure games, A Case of the Crabs and BRain Hotel are both superb.

Reply

I adored this game just as much as the previous one. Out of interest, did anybody not eat any of the food throughout the game? Is the ending different?

PS. Highlights for me were the darkness scene and the power of the moustache.

Reply

I remember playing a game with the same character about counterfeit crabs. This one was pretty cool, and the bit with the two goons is hilarious.

Reply

Cool post system, nice game.

Reply

Awexome. I enjoyed the first game, A Case of the Crabs, so this one will be great to save to liven up a boring afternoon.

Reply

I beat this on Nordinho the day it was posted. I loved the first one (A Case of the Crabs) and I loved the second! Funny and clever!

Reply

"did anybody not eat any of the food throughout the game? Is the ending different?"

I doubt it, since no matter what you do, she gives you chips and he automatically eats them. The only possible difference would be, I think, that he wouldn't mention the peanuts or pretzels.

Cute game, funny too

What a fantastic game, loved it. Great style, superb humour, and puzzles that are actually solveable without a FAQ. Ok i had to check where to get the blacklight, but well should have searched more thoroughly.

Anyway, this game really is a classic, that whole scene in the dark was beyond hilarious lol. As was the final dealing with the villain hah.

Anyway, they need to get these guys a budget, and start producing commercial games, really, they're damn good.

Reply

I liked the game. Some parts were pretty obvious, as far as figuring out the clues, and the hints page was basically a big walkthrough in itself. I hope there will be more games like this in the future.

Reply

"PS. Highlights for me were the darkness scene and the power of the moustache."

If you liked the darkness scene (or the game in general), you should check out Monkey Island. Actually, the creators mention in the Hints section that the darkness scene is a tribute to MI. But...it's just not the same without wax yak lips. You'll see. :)

Reply

Don't worry I've played and completed all 4 Monkey Island games. (I've got the special boxset).

I'm generally a sucker for old school adventure games. Hell, the Lucas Arts Collection consists of basically the four best games that I own. Full Throttle, Sam and Max, the Dig and the ulyimate Holy Grail of adventuring - Grim Fandango.

Reply

I think it might just be me but, when I play the game (and I have played it three times), there is a bug right after I get the matches from Sam, the scene doesnt cut out the the industrial place. Does anyone know another place I can play it apart from the pinheads website?

Reply

Tia - I am not sure playing it any place else would solve your problem, as the publisher's site will likely have the latest version available.

Reply

This game was amazing. I absolutely loved it. I was laughing the entire time. Great game pick Derek!

Reply

This game was incredible, funny, I laugh all the time. Gratz to the programmers and to the story writers.

Even the hint is funny. A+

Reply

Thanks Jay, I suppose I can try to download it again and see what happens. Although, I didnt save it to my pc, do you think it may have something to do with that?

Well, I think the game is very witty and funny especially when he talks to Sam about bypass surgery. Oh and I also like the english snobby guy in the pawn shop, I think its so funny that he is CONTINUOSLY drinking tea. They got the accent and the right level of snobbery spot on! The graphics are cool too and the music in the loading scene.

Down side:
The bug and the long load time.

Reply

This is as funny as hell. It really is. It's really original, fun to play, interesting and takes a bit of thinking to complete. Unless you check the hints page, which I have to say, is a a nice change from having to struggle through a game or look at a fan-made walkthrough. Plus, even if you don't need it, I recommend checking out the Hints page afterwards or something, it's just as hilarious as the game.
I couldn't believe it when he opens the crate and goes "The crate was filled with GLADIATOR MONKEYS." I couldn't stop laughing, that whole scene in the dark cracked me up. From the lights going out all the way through the passage afterwards. This is awesome. I highly recommend it guys!

Good one Jay! ^_~

I loved it! Can definitely see the influence of the old Lucas Arts classics like Monkey Island.

I don't find all the "escape the whatever" games appealing because there's no personality or story or anything, so its great to see a point-and-click like this.

Reply

Great game! i checked their site and it seems this is a sequel! the other game is also very nice :)

Reply

wow great game!

Reply

You're right, Diego. I'm hoping to find someone who has played "A Case of the Crabs" and "Brain Hotel" to write reviews of them for this site.

Truth is, when those games first came out, I encountered some trouble getting through them, and so I couldn't write a proper review.

Reply

lol, fun

Reply

Hey again,

I have played both a 'case of the crabs' and 'Brain hotel'. Brain hotel is very unusual, in short: It is about a man who has to deliver this package to someone in the hotel. Unfortunately, the man he deliver the package to is an evil scientist I think...well, you partner up with a robot who was programmed to destroy but who has broken free of the evil scientists control over it. The robot now wants to destroy the evil scientists plans. I can find a walkthrough for this if you would like?
'A case of the crabs':Nick Bounty is the investigator and you have to find out who is behind the selling of fake crabs. A lot more initiative is needed for this one than the sequel but I comepleted it!. I can get a walkthrough for this too!

Can you submit games on this website? I havent checked.

I LOVED this game! It wasn't very hard, but it was so clever and so different from the other point and click games. Brilliant stuff!

Awh crap, I didn't wait until the end of the credits to see the Strongbad type ending. What'd I miss?

This game was soooo good, I loved it well done, to all at Pinhead Games. I laughed throughout! ThankYoooou

hehe i beat it !! with no hints ! it was a very good game, classic and funny !

Reply

Anyone else having lots of problems with the game? I have played it 5 times now and each time it messes up but in different spots. The furthest I have gotten during these 5 trys is right after Sam gives the match. :o( This game is awesome...I want to go further!! Any suggestions?

Reply

Finally had time to let it download. Loved it. It brought back to mind all those B&W saturday movies = Fu Manchu, Thin Man, Hitchcock, and of course it's inspiration - Maltese Falcon. What a nice memory jog. Music was well chosen and the black out sequence was brillant. Good job!

Reply

this game was very funny! i completed it with only a few hints. i love the movie spoofs and the script; this was a very well written game! i really wanted to pull on weird asian man's mustache, but he wouldn't let me!
i went to their website and also played nick bounty: a case of the crabs. just as the name implies, there is a crab joke! (think... think... think... ewww!) it's slightly different than nick bounty: the goat in the grey fedora. for instance the inventory is on the screen the whole time. the animation style is different, and you have a gun (you don't use it though!)
there are a few glitches, but overall, i believe their games are pretty awesome!
jay, i'm sure everyone would enjoy playing the other "pinhead" games on your site!

Reply

I am totally in love with this game. I played it and then got sad because i beat it. Jay do you have any other games like this one?
Oh and i love ur site.

Reply

Oh man, this game was AMAZING. Seriously, pretty much perfect. Stylish, funny, just difficult enough to keep me entertained. My only gripe was how short it was, definitely disappointing when the credits rolled.

(By the way, Jay, you have one rockin' site. I've been wasting my whole weekend away following your links around.)

Yay! A plus. Darkness scene and end scene particularly funny... Hints also hilarious.

For those stuck with the light bulbs:

There are two things to click on for each lamp: The lamp and the lightbulb. The lamp you can turn on and off, and the lightbulb you can unscrew.

My favorite is the blackout scene!

(Nick throws corndog at cannon. Cannon fires corndog at fuse box)

NICK: Hey, my stuff!

(Fuse short circuits. Blackout.)

NICK:Aw crap.
(Nick pulls out wire cutters.)
NICK:Finally, something that can be useful!
(Cutters break.)
NICK:D****T IT BROKE IN HALF! This dollar store crap is cheaper than a scotsman in Wal-Mart!
(Nick uses matches)
NICK:Finally, I'm free!...
(Trench coat burns)
NICK:... and ON FIRE! Stop, drop, roll, stop, drop roll...
(Eventually)
NICK:Ok, now what?

If you don't get kidnaped in Chinatown, make sure you saw the scene with the mysterious guy and his psyco-looking friend interrogating the secretary at the law office.

Reply

A spoiler alert about the end of game,as it changes nicks comments.

the above walkthrough has Nick automatically eat potato chips and after the woman shoots him,he says it has to do with the potato chips. If you eat the peanuts at the desk where the crime scene is,and the pretzels where the cop is,after she shoots nick,he'll then say it has to do with the snacks (including pretzels and peanuts,as they have the salt from the salt mines like the potato chips)

thought you might be interested in that bit of info.

It's almost unbelievable that such high quality entertainment can be free - in fact it really compelled me to make a donation after finishing the game.

The dialog is some of the wittiest I've encountered and probably the game's greatest strength. Gameplay is casual, clever and enjoyable. A memorable hour spent playing this game warrants a 5/5 rating :)

Thanks, DerekW and JIG for this excellent recommendation!

The logistics and voice acting and everything in this are completely priceless. (I finally started sorting games by rating instead of by date - makes a world of difference!) Thanks so much for this treat!!
