Tucked away in a secret corner of Sega's Japanese website is the dangerously named Woody Pop, a Shockwave adaptation of a particularly well-executed Game Gear Breakout clone.
Move the mouse to move the paddle, a smiling piece of wood. The levels in Woody Pop include a number of surprises, such as enemy-releasing trick blocks, ball-warping tunnels on the side of the screen, and a ball-deflecting train. As in Arkanoid, you must choose a direction after each level, opening up a great deal of replay value for completists. Powerups include an unstoppable diamond ball, the familiar sticky paddle, and a fiery ball that burns blocks and, if held too long, can even damage Woody.
Almost twenty years old, Woody Pop isn't as visually stunning or innovative as recent titles such as BreakQuest, but the collision detection and level design is solid, and the bright, chunky pixels still look good.
Quite a fun game, being able to choose the direction was quite cool. And also the continue option was nice. The only problem is that it's too easy to get the ball into a loop and can be hard to get out of, because every time you hit the ball it would hit the same place and bounce back at the same angle, so you had to keep the paddle moving to find a way out... Otherwise, fun!
omg I have this game on my gamegear!! This is like... vintage! I remember having fun with it...
after i click the link it just goes to a blue screen full of japanese and two text boxes that look like a log-in or something, but there's no enter button or anything... what do i do? (i feel stupid...)
Allegra - click the top white button with Japanese text on it to start the game. =)
Wow...I like this better than the "regular" breakit.
20 years old already? Where's the time that people said all they had was a skipping rope and a ball to play with? :p
Yeah I had this game on my Game Gear back in the old days as well. Always hated those damn pengiuns and the train :( Lot easier this time around with the mouse and continues though. Yay woody!
lovely! where do u guys get all the games? greetz eddie
Got to the end! (didn't expect to have one) Good idea... I only figured out almost in the end that the powerup with th cloud (or tornado or whatever it is) let's you fire litle clouds wich can really help you.
I think it's good that when you loose all lives you just have to restart the level, that way you're always seeing new levels and you can even minimize the window to play later. It also works for the more competitive types that are also interested in a good score, because you can choose to see more levels and getting to the end or trying to score high using only the initial lives.
(i don't comment very often, but i come here almost daily for about a year, so congratulations jay and collaborators for this great site)
there's no button to click... i clicked the Back button and went to the help section, and i can see what the blue screen is supposed to look like, but mine is without a button. oh well :(
also, jay, the game doesn't open in a new window, just to let u know :)
Umm, I think they removed it.....
Thanks for the alert. I found a mirror for the game for posterity sake.
Great game. It should be an some link dump soon. 5/5 for a quick mini game.
