Weekday Escape

elleRecently I was asked, "What do you like about escape games? How do they make you feel?" This is a hard question because there is a certain ineffability about the appeal of escape games. I muttered something about feeling witty, explorations of interesting places and unending playful whimsy. So I turn the question to you: what is it about these games that keep you coming back for more? Take, for example, the puzzles in a surreal paper world by Esklavos, the search for inspiration and No1Game's green men, or the ingredients for a cheerful celebration of Funkyland...

Find the Escape-Men 111: Fairy TaleFind the Escape-Men 111: Fairy Tale - On its game page, No1Game points out that this episode was inspired by a Kukai poem. It plays a bit differently than most Find the Escape-Men games and seems a guest designer was involved in its creation. Still, the same idiosyncrasies of the EM series remain. You'll need perseverance, patience, and understanding to help you through some rather arbitrary item-use puzzles and finish the fairy tale with all ten green guys' help. The focus, though, is soundly on the experience and the uplifting message at the end.

Paper World EscapePaper World Escape - One of Esklavos' distinguishing characteristics is the use of surrealism in its design. Here, paper craft is the perfect medium for Esklavos' creative puzzles and gorgeous artwork, the drawbacks being a rather clunky interface and a tendency to be abstruse. Collect clues, figure out what they're pointing to in each scene, and you'll earn the four colored keys needed to unlock the archway and escape. When eye-pleasing visuals meet brain-teasing puzzles, it's worth a few extra clicks to operate inventory or interact with the scene. It's all about the journey through the destination.

FunkyLand 10th AnniversaryFunkyLand 10th Anniversary - When FunkyLand celebrates an anniversary, it means your help is needed to gather the five ingredients needed for a yummy party cake. This means solving several puzzles all resplendent in FunkyLand's whimsical-meets-mod room designs. Despite a couple extra puzzles, though, escape comes easily enough, making the only disappointment the brevity of the experience. Even so, one of the best parts of an escape is how it takes only five minutes to infuse cheer into your mood.

We love escape games, and our readers love talking about them and sharing hints! How about you? Let us know what you think, ask for clues, or help out other players in the comments below.

Took me way too long to finish them all, but I did it without using any hints or walkthroughs. That green men one was interesting to say the least :P

Anyone else dreading the Windows XP sound to come up at some point in Paper World? :-)

I'm getting this bug in Escape-Men 111 where at increasingly far points in the game something sends me back to the green start screen with the escape men in the inventory superimposed. I'm currently at the first screen after the scenario was established for the fourth time with five escape men--three copies of the first and two copies of the second.

This is hilarious, but it makes the game unplayable in the way it was meant to be played. One step ahead of the thing that previously sent me back, anything I click on could send me back again.

By the way, I dunno if the formula in TeX format at the beginning was intentional, but my nerdy side loves it. I like to pretend this is TeX homework. :P

I beat the paper one without putting to use the

number code or the blue white black line

the walkthrough says what they're for but I didn't know I was brute forcing the puzzles. I thought they were just the same old

find the right sequence that keeps the lights on

kind of puzzles that you never get a clue for.

I can't believe I was stuck on the house view and didn't try clicking near the edge. For some reason i thought the whole game was that house. :-O

Reply
shipoopie July 11, 2014 3:19 AM replied to Lisa Wiles

Yay! I got through them all without a walkthrough, except for trying to figure that the escape men game wasn't just that house!

The eggs puzzle in the anniversary game had a puzzle that stumped me for a little bit until for some reason my brain said "HEY! Try this!". And wahoo! That's it! :-D

The music for the paper game didn't work until I clicked the sound icon off and on.

@elle

I don't know why I like escape games. I just do.

But, if I think about which escape games I've played, I think that silly and upbeat are good qualities. The ones with the cats or the funkyland ones or any number of other ones that don't take themselves too seriously. Those things make it exciting when a new one from certain creators pops up. I would probably play escape games anyway, but when the creators are silly and happy, it makes it more fun to play their games!

Reply

Paper world escape looks fantastic but the puzzles are a bit more about trial and error.

This website led me to love escape games! I started with Escape-Men and am now playing a bunch of the others as well. I don't really know what draws me to them. The EM ones are just entertaining, and now maybe I'm drawn by my former lack of skill - I want to get better. They're also a kind of puzzle that I never realized I liked, which kind of goes back to my always being really bad at it, because I was never really willing to think about them. I have no idea what made me try EM. Maybe it was "this one looks different" and then I realized that escape games are actually all cool.
