Weekday Escape

elleEven though you've been happily reliving "Ommagosh I'm trapped!" memories playing 12 Best Escape Games, I know you want more. Well, at least, I want more. Thus I present these three new escape games. Perhaps they can only dream of their icon in the spotlight of your favorites list, but they've come prepared to win you over. Even without bright lights and fame, even if those "hard core" gamers such as Yahtzee Croshaw don't totally agree, escaping of all sorts is fun. And we can never get enough of that. Which is the point, of course.

Fruit Kitchens No.5: Peach PinkFruit Kitchens No.5: Peach Pink - from FunkyLand, the master of creating rooms we want to break into and live in, not escape out of, is less bland than it first appears. An ineffable appeal that transcends the simple side of puzzle solving sparks our excitement on as soon as we lay eyes on this room. Luckily, its suave style makes up for the simple gameplay—gather up seven pretty peaches, watch as they magically morph into a key, use it to unlock the door, and there you have it: a grin to last the rest of the day!

Story Room 8Story Room 8 - by Story House is short and not particularly full of puzzling, but the puzzles that are here are pleasing enough to warrant a weekday escape appearance. Explore the single wall, looking for clues and solving codes, much the same spirit as a Robamimi One Scene game although notably short of the aesthetic wonderment. Still, Story Room 8 fits perfectly in those moments when you need a mental recharge while being assured frustration-free success.

Escape from the Brown Door RoomEscape from the Brown Door Room - Like parents taking one look at their newborn's tuft of auburn curls and deciding to name him Red, Yomino Kagura leaves the creativity to game making rather than titling. You might glance at the beigeness of the design and decide to skip it. But you shouldn't—a changing cursor and clean design make escaping from this room a pleasant endeavor. One can't help but wish for more graphical pizzazz to go along with the puzzles, which have their own sense of whimsy. Although the answers are straight-forward, you'll need to jump through more hoops to get them, making the experience feel more substantial.

We love escape games, and our readers love talking about them and sharing hints! How about you? Let us know what you think, ask for clues, or help out other players in the comments below.

Peach Kitchen Walkthrough

  1. Table

    • Look at the silverware laid out on the tray.

    • Enter the code into the box between the coffee maker and the blender (back left alcove, near the frog); get the key.
      Colorblind help:

The silverware has, left to right, 2 blue dots, 4 red dots, 3 green dots, and 1 black dot. The buttons on the box start out white and cycle through red, blue, green, and black, in that order.

      Click 4×, 2×, 3×, 1×.

    • Use the key to open the white thing in the middle of the table.

  2. Stove

When you zoom in, there's a peach in plain view to the left of the stove.

  3. Between stove and sink

Zoom in on the countertop between the stove and the sink, and look in the white basket.

  4. On peninsula

    • You know the handle of the window on the back wall? It's not a handle. (What is it with these people storing can openers in the wierdest-possible spots?)

    • Use the can opener to open the can on the countertop to the right of the sink.

  5. Under peninsula

    Look in the heart-shaped box.

  6. Frog

    • Look at the letters on the bottom of the alcove cabinet.

    • Enter the code into the white and pink flat box under the window (to the right of the door). Get the scissors.

    • Use the scissors to make the frog (in the alcove) drop onto the button.

  7. Drawer

    • Get the swizzle stick (or heart-shaped lollipop or whatever it is) from the middle shelf in the alcove.

    • Go to the cabinet under the window (on the back wall). Look at the top of the box with the books.

    • Poke the swizzle stick into the hole in the back to open the drawer.

Story Room 8 Walkthrough

  • Initial exploration (well, as much as you can call it "exploration" when you're examining a single wall of a single room...)

    1. The clock

Instead of numbers, the clock has primary-colored circles.

    2. Trashcan

I do believe that's water in that there trash can. (Did the roof leak?)

    3. Picture

It's a rather boring picture - just four colorful stars in the corners, and a big white expanse in between. And it's not hung very well - it wobbles.

    4. Box on the left

It has three primary-colored buttons, an image that looks rather like the dial of a clock, and a sequence of numbers.

    5. Box on the right

There are three diamond-shaped indentations on the top, in cyan, pink, and yellow.

    6. Top of table

There's a series of primary-colored annulets (aka open circles).

    7. Underside of table

It says "+48" in a big blue square.

    8. Cupboard - glass doors

The doors are locked - looks like it needs an ordinary key.

    9. Middle drawer of cupboard

It needs a three-digit code having to do with a red and blue square.

    10. Bottom doors of cupboard

This needs a three-digit code having to do with annulets.

  • Time to solve some puzzles

    1. Box on the left

      The clue is the clock.

Make a note of the colors corresponding to the sequence of numbers, then press the buttons in that order.
      Colorblind help:

      1=red, 4=yellow, 6=yellow, 9=blue, 10=yellow, 12=yellow, and the buttons are left=blue, middle=yellow, right=red. Thus, press RMMLMM

      Get the pink block.

    2. Bottom doors of cupboard

The clue is written on the tabletop.
      Colorblind help:

There are three yellow annulets, 6 blue ones, and 1 red one. The first number is red, second is blue, third is yellow. Thus, the code is 163.

Get the cyan block, and note the "150" in a big red square.

    3. Middle drawer of cupboard

You just got the second part of this code - the first part was under the table.

Just add the two numbers to get the code of 198.

Get the yellow block, and note the word "water" written on the bottom.

    4. Box on the right

Put your three blocks into the slots on the top (it'll automatically put then in the appropriately-colored spot, so no colorblind help needed). Get the small key.

    5. Glass doors

Use the small key to open the doors. Get the wineglass.

    6. Wobbly picture

      1. Remember the word "water"?

Fill the wineglass with water from the trashcan. Pour the water into the middle drawer of the cupboard. (Random acts of destruction, anyone?)

      2. Note the new code - a star and some letters.

      3. Go to the wobbly picture, since it's the only other thing in the room with stars. Press the corners according to the watery clue.
        Colorblind help:

Top left = red, top right = green, bottom left = yellow, bottom right = blue. So RBYBGR translates to TL, BR, BL, BR, TR, TL.

        Get the key.

    7. Exiting: use the key from behind the picture on the door. (Yes, there's a spot in your inventory that remains empty, but I have not been able to find any other secret item that leads to a different ending.)

The first code I could figure out for story room 8 is

ryybyy

. Hey, I should be a little cryptic, but once you see the box, you will

Know How To Use It. ;).

In Brown Door, you find a

cross that fits into a device in the closet, but there don't appear to be any clues as to the required numbers.

What am I missing?

Wow, easiest escape game Wednesday ever. I think I spent maybe 15 minutes on all of them.

@kirt

take back the cross and check behind it

@bearharry: Thanks. I feel so dumb. One of the most common escape hints ever, and I missed it. Doh!

Aaand done. Considering how simple some of the clues were, I am not proud of the time it took me to beat all three of these, but at least I did it this week without a walkthrough or hint guide.

@kurt

If it makes you feel any better, it took me a while before I finally thought to look there for that clue as well

I was actually stuck for a while in the peach kitchen, because

I couldn't figure out what the swizzle stick was for. That hole in the back of the drawer is (a) pretty hard to see, and (b) you can't really tell that it's not, in fact, a keyhole, just a hole.

Hello Paul,

I've just testing the comments using IE (my comment on the best 12 puzzle games) and it works well. It takes a little time to be displayed (I would say as usually) but it works.
Please, if it worked before with IE, look at your latest programs installed.

ESCAPE FROM THE BROWN DOOR ROOM - Interrogative Walkthrough

Where do monsters hide?

Take the arrow knob from under the bed.

Is your head comfy?

Note the clue under the pillow.

Can't stand these easy clues?

Take the diamond placemat on the TV stand.

Have you been framed? Do you have a shaky defense?

Use the pillow clue to shake the wobbly picture frame. Take the remote control and direct your attention to the arrows.

Is the show with all of your favorite stars on?

Use the remote control on the television and see the stars.

How do you open the lower cabinet? Is the solution starring you in the face?

On the television, there was one red star, two yellow stars, and three blue stars. Take the arrow knob from inside.

Is that the light switch for the closet? Or does it have some other, holey different function? What's the point, anyway?

Put the arrow knobs in the holes on the light switch plate.

Did things just take a turn for the worse? Knob what I mean?

Orient the arrow knobs to match the clue behind the picture frame and push the button. The closet will open.

Is that a clock or a little table? Can we open it in time?

The clock in the closet has colored hour marks. Click the corresponding colored numbers on the table below the picture frame until they match the corresponding hours on the clock. Take the pliers.

Are you wearing a wire? Can you cut that out?

Use the pliers to cut the wire holding the upper cabinet doors closed.

If diamonds are forever, and that box is the shape of things to come, then whose sides are you on?

Apply the diamond placemat clue to the shape puzzle on the wooden box.

Remember that a circle has no facets.

Grab the cross.

Would you be supplized if there was a puzzle in the crosset?

The cross goes in the cross shaped indentation on the white box in the closet.

Would you be cross if that didn't work? Have you seen the problem from all sides?

There is a number code on the back of the cross.

Oh, Brown Door, do I have the key to your heart?

Use the key from the cross box to open the door and exit.

Did I win?

The answer is clear.
