Tsure Game 5.2

TrinnAt first it's just you and a white cube on a table in an otherwise empty room. To play, click the areas on or around the deceptively plain box. While it seems basic to begin with, turning to the sides of the cube reveals small buttons, switches, and compartments all with various interconnected functions. Any objects you find by discovering and dismantling the box's secrets are added to your inventory at the bottom of the screen. Just like the hidden caches sprinkled around the box's surface, Tsure Game 5.2 has surprising depth. Its elegantly simple design that conceals a handful of engaging puzzles may remind you of similar titles like The Room or Dismantlement series. When one side has a puzzle that might seem confusing or obtuse, tinkering with another side often gives you just the item you need to unravel the mystery. At its essence, this is an escape game that rewards experimentation... you need to think "outside the box" to get inside the box!

There's a delightful natural progression here from exploration to discovery to puzzle-solving. Aside from one instance of mildly confusing Japanese to English translation, this process goes uninterrupted from start to finish. As a result it's not particularly difficult or long, yet still delightfully satisfying. The clean and basic style removes all distraction from the puzzles; however, there are some light objects on a white background that can be hard to spot at first. Where Tsure Game 5.2 shines is in its logical ingenuity. Some inventory items are used in ways that you might not expect, but still completely make sense. While the overall concept could be more original (there's little to differentiate this sequel from 5.1) Tsure Game obviously knows what it does well and has little reason to deviate from this successful formula. By boiling down all the extraneous elements, what you're left with is pure, enjoyable point-and-click gameplay directly delivered to the player's hands.

Ho ho! I kept waiting for the second machine to turn up... like in the screenshot. The game ended earlier than expected! Where's my second machine?

The four digit puzzle has me stuck: I have the clue, but can't make sense of it.

Pretty good game.

It did make me remember how much I miss the dismantlement games, though. Last one was what, three years ago? And even it came with the disclaimer "If you're not good at Japanese, you can't solve this puzzle"...
