Weekday Escape

JessAre you sunburnt? Tired of the sounds of laughing children, ice cream trucks and blaring beach-weather anthems? You're in luck! Toybox, a new escape game from Polish designer Lukasz W., is here to inject a little darkness into your summertime. Okay, to be more accurate, a lot of darkness.

ToyboxThe game's scenario is not a pretty one: you wake, cold and alone, in a room lit only by a single, faint candle... that gleams off of the links of the chain connecting your leg to the wall. Uh-oh. From there, believe it or not, things only get worse. You are trapped in a house of horrors, and must solve puzzles and face supernatural terror in order to regain your freedom. Of course, there's also the matter of your murderous captor... where could he be? You might just find out.

The game's puzzles are on the whole only adequate, mainly of the standard "collect item A to solve code/open door B" type. One puzzle involving a piano struck me as being a bit dubious, though a quick Google search allowed me to proceed without too much difficulty. A lot of backtracking is involved, so be prepared to run back and forth between rooms quite often. It's important to note that at certain points of the game, new clues appear in previously-visited locations; so, if you find yourself stuck, retrace your steps. The game has multiple endings: a "good" outcome, two slightly different "bad" outcomes, and a bonus ending that I've yet to discover. Getting the good ending hinges upon finding a specific item, so be sure to pay close attention to your surroundings!

Without doubt, Toybox's most impressive aspect is its ominous, sepulchral atmosphere. This is a horror game, through and through: blood drips thickly from the walls, severed hands festoon the ceiling, nasty surprises wait behind every door. While the game's graphics are more than adequate, it's the additions of a handful of well-made, chilling cutscenes and a genuinely spooky soundtrack that elevate Toybox above mere goriness. All of these elements meld wonderfully together to produce an immersive, entertainingly grotesque ambience that is just cartoony enough to avoid crossing into true gross-out territory. In this respect, the game is outstanding.

While it's clear that Lukasz W. put quite a bit of time and effort into Toybox, a few small additions and alterations could have made the game better and more user-friendly. First and foremost, a save feature would have been nice (particularly when trying to discover the different endings), and a mute button would also have been appreciated. Although the game's inventory system is a little clunky, there is no pixel-hunting (yay!) and navigating around the house is easy. All in all, improvable but not bad.

As you might have gathered, this game is not suitable for the little ones; though the graphics are not realistic, the game is gory and frightening enough to upset the easily-spooked. For everyone else, especially fans of all things macabre, I'm sure you'll enjoy this very creepy and stylized, if not always substantive, escape game. Next time around, perhaps Lukasz will combine his obvious talent for creating an atmosphere with equally-fabulous puzzles; if so, we're in for some truly amazing fun.

Narrative Walkthrough

The Awakening

Wha? Where am I? Ouch...my head is throbbing. I don't remember a single thing.

What's this thing over here in the corner?
Oh good, it's a flashlight!

Uh-oh, the light went out. But that's ok....or maybe not, there seems to be a chain attached to my ankle, with a strange symbol on the lock. Think, think...

Oh it's pi! So I guess the combo is 31415, the first 5 numbers of pi.

Ok, good, I managed to get the chain off. Woah, what kind of sicko did this? There is barbed wire and mannequin heads everywhere! Seems my abductor left me a little message...in blood?!!? And something else....

A knife seems to be stuck in one of the heads

A compass is hanging from a rope

Ok, I really need to leave now. I'll take the door to the left, that seems to be the way to go. Wha? What is a little boy doing here? Is some one else here? Hello? Can I help you? *why is he holding that lighter that way?* Ahh! He's burning himself!!! What! It must be me seeing things. (something, something about a lighter... *cling* *cling* .....flicking fingers)

My mental apparition seems to have left me something... a lighter, perfect!

I have to leave now!

Up the ladder

Out the door and up the ladder! Dang, it's locked! But there is something else...

An arrow is affixed to the door. Can I pull it off? Yes!

finally, some clothes! I was feeling strange without some clothes...what's this?

The heavy lump turned out to be a dictaphone. Huh...

there seems to be a something recorded, a series of notes...sounds like a piano?

Maybe there is some way to open the door? I'll have to open the door probably in some unusual fasion. Wait a minute...

There is a bloody arrow pointing to the back. Upon turning I see a strange diagram...hmmm, I guess I have to write this down, but with what?

Back down

Hmm, I'll try that other door where I woke up from. Hmm... the piano where I saw that appariton. And some strange bloody card on top. I'll mess with it later.

The Sacrifice Room

Oh wow, a candle setup and everything! This guy's a devil worshipper! But what do I do here?

That same symbol on the lighter is on the floor here. It reminds me of something.

A compass! I just found one! Maybe It can help me!

I shake it and it moves in odd directions...hmmm.

3 X 1
2 * X
X 5 4
I'll have to light the candles in these directions, probably in order (or not).

Ah-hah! A secret compartment right behind the creepy picture! Another one of those arrows plus a figurine of some sort

On closer inspection I pull the head off. Ah, a flash drive!

Piano

Something about the piano...

The dictaphone!

looks like I need to play the piano
in this way from the left edge.

Upon playing the keys, another secret door opens. Geeze, this kidnapper goes through some serious measures. Wait! The card!

The diagram is similar to the one I saw upstairs. I follow the path and write down the corresponding letters

Kinky room

Huh...the creep factor just increased tenfold. But what to do?

There is a battery in the mannequin's hand. Looks like a phone battery.

There is an arrow on the bed frame

There seem to be marks on the picture...hmmm.

I cut the picture open with the knife, but there seems to be another compass mark with a cryptic word...JOY.

I put the arrows in, yet I seem to be missing one

Oh wait, my knife has an outline of an arrow on the blade! It's removable!

Aha! It's a secret door!

Bloody Murder Room

Creepy bloody chair. Wonder what I can do here? There is a locker with something inside probably. I'll leave it for later.

a duckshot shell is on the shelf!

Hmm a cabinet...I can't open it though.

a diagram is on the door, for a secret compartment in the brick close to the door leading back to the piano room

I guess there is nothing to do but go back. Wha!? The chair is bleeding! It must be me...I'm starting to slowly lose my sanity. There is a door with the word MURDER spelled backwards but I can't open that door...or maybe I don't want to. I open the right door

Going back to the ladder room

I turn around and face the door. Now where is it?

I remember the diagram and push the brick. Bingo! A paper of some sort with 2 triangles and a star in between. Could it mean something?
Somewhere a faraway click sounds

Back to Bloody Murder Room

The cabinet popped open. Perfect, a shotgun! Maybe I can defend myself now? There's something else.

On the back of the shelf there is a couple of marks...a cypher maybe?

Wait the numbers inside the shapes match the number of sides. Maybe the cypher works for the paper too? So the code must be...

3163

but where do I use it?

Must be for the safe

Opening the safe I find...a corpse!? Insane madman must have brutally injured her. Wait... she's a blond, I'm a blond. Maybe the kidnapper was into blonds? A key, the numbers on it pushing the edge of my memory. Hmm, guess I have to take it. Oh my gosh it moved! She's still alive!!! She mumbles two words "Help them...." as her breath leaves her for the last time. Oh no!
The kidnapper, the key, the lighter, it all makes sense! The bar, last night (maybe), that man... endlessly flicking...me stirring with a straw, winking, anxious for some action. Walking to his car, then brutally beaten to the edge of unconcienceness. I walked right into this. I have to get out now. I am going to have to open the Murder door.

I use the key but I hold onto it

It clicks open! I guess I have to tread with caution. This sicko might be back at any moment! I have to tread with caution!

The REDRUM room

Huge jars...probably full of body parts. Oh god! There's my name...Mary. So that corpse in the locker must be Anna. Who know what he was planning!

There's something on the floor shining. A red shotgun shell! Probably deadlier.

There's a computer behind me. That grid word I got is probably the password!

Its "18ruhofcoeenrfs"

Got it! It seems I can unlock the door up the ladder. But there is another door and I cant open that one without permission. What do I do?

Oh wait the flash drive! I'll stick it in here...

Hmm, it still prompts me with a number, and I can only think of one 3 digit number that flashes at the edge of my mind.

...217, that fateful number on the key...

It opened! I can escape!

The Ladder Room

The door clicks open without a problem

Normal Room

I remember this...hey there's my cellphone! But it has no battery...

I put the battery in the back of the phone

911 won't dial? Thats impossible! Looks like there is only one way out...

Outside

Uh-oh, he's here...with a taser.

Ending 1 Bad

Nothing in shotgun

Ending 2 Good

Red Shell in gun

Ending 3 Bad

Green Shell in gun

Bonus add-on ending

Dial JESUS into phone or 53787 then go downstairs to REDRUM room and take camera from open compartment and take a picture of any incriminating room with good ending in play

This is the best I could do since I never tried or understood spoiler tags.

  • Shoot a picture of any blood-soaked room.

  • Head back to the TV Room and leave by the gray door on the left.

  • Hope you remembered to load the shotgun!

There are basically three ways for this to end:

If you forgot to load the shotgun or loaded it with the green shell which can be found in the chair room then you are toast.

If you loaded the shotgun correctly but didn't mess with the cell phone or the camera (which are not essential to finish the game), you get away and get picked up by a truck driver in the end. End of story.

If you completed all the extra steps with the cell phone and the camera, there is an additional bit of animation after the credits. I call it the "Come to Jesus" ending. :-)

Great creepy game, but I must go to work, so save feature is indispensable at this kind of situations.

Whoa, bout 10 when I first started. The first jump was perfect. Probably the best horror game I've played since Exmortis.

Reply

Not a bad game, Fun, decent storyline, and the puzzles weren't ridiculously easy. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Reply

Interesting game - a bit on the spooky side, but not truly frightening, like The House, for example.

I agree with the review in every respect. It's promising game with space for all the improvements Jess noted. I'd also add that the ambient soundtrack could have been looped a bit more seamlessly.

After getting the "good" ending, I played again and got the bonus ending (nothing major, it just shows the aftermath past the credits).

Nice experience overall... thank you.

Reply

I imagine the bonus ending involves the item found in the final room? I couldn't figure it out myself, but then again I was in a hurry to finish the game as I was in the middle of making dinner. lol.

Reply

Well I'm stuck

I took the battery from mannequins hand but can't figure out what to do next.Any help?

@SiamJai: How exactly did you change the ending? Did it involve

Using a different frequency on the computer?

Reply
Flashback81 June 3, 2009 4:50 AM

Secret ending:

Get the cell phone in the final room, sitting in the bottom right corner near the couch

Get the cell phone battery from the mannequin's left hand in the "bedroom".

Put the battery in the phone by clicking on the phone and opening the back.

Follow the advice given by the flyer. Call "JESUS", or 53787, and press the green button.

Go to the laptop room, and notice one of the pictures has opened. Take the camera from behind it, and use itto take a photo of any bloody, incriminating room. (Any one will do.)

Then, just finish the game normally, and stick around after the credits to see the secret ending.

I'd guess it involves the

mobile phone. I can't find a number that you can ring, though...

not a bad game

however i cant get the secret ending to work

the phone wont dial when i give it a number and press the green button

ive only been able to get 1 bad ending

where you dont put any ammo in the gun, if u put green bullets in, the game loops you to another room when you try and exit the grey door...

Also

I couldn't get the cel-phone to work, and I'm sure that in all my frustrated clicking it should have triggered the flipping of the phone so I could insert the battery...

Inventory system is really annoying. While I like it when a game challenges conventions for the genre it's in, this one doesn't so much challenge them as ignore them.

This was a good creepy game that managed to make me jump a couple of times. The music was very similar to the Boards Of Canada tune used in the Salad Fingers cartoons made by the twisted genius that is David Firth. More spooky games please.

I can't move the loose brick. I know where it is from the clue that was given (it's obvious) and I even confirmed by checking the walkthrough, but no matter how many times I click that stupid brick, nothing happens.

I think it is worth warning your readers that this is not simply gruesome, but implies sexual violence and torture. For me, at least, that goes beyond mere horror. I really appreciate that JIG rates its games. In my opinion, turning violence against women into a game is repugnant, and so would warn potential users. (In fact, I would choose not to review, and thus promote such a game, but that may not be your sense of the responsibility of the site.)

Reply

alright, question about the piano

is it supposed to make only knocking sounds? It's really irritating me, as I can hear and play, but I can't tell intervals or notes by hearing... any help would be appreciated!

Ok I'm stuck, even with the walkthrough...

Where is the brick I'm supposed to move? what room is it in?

any hints on that?

I consider myself to be pretty good at escape games. But for this one, I had to use the walkthrough too many times for my liking.

And it wasn't scary either. Meh.

Reply

Greenfourth: The way to get the secret ending is pretty much what Flashback81 wrote. I have only one more step to add:

Don't wait for any feedback from the phone. There is none. Just dial the number and check the hidden safe.

Basso, some hints for opening the safe:

It's a geometry puzzle.

A hint is next to the shotgun.

Count the number of sides for each object on the poster.

I came into the comments to look for help with the interface -- the way this game deals (or doesn't deal) with the inventory items is SUPER annoying. I don't want to spend more time figuring out the mechanics than the actual puzzles.

After reading the comment from JIGuest, I think I'll skip this one entirely. I don't mind a little horror, but like JIGuest, I'm pretty tired of the whole trope that violence against women is somehow entertaining.

This is the best I could do since I never tried or understood spoiler tags.

moseywo: It may be "just" a game to you, but others are more sensitive. Some of us sensitive people can't help but be reminded of the fact that terrible things happen in real life. It isn't something we need to get over, but who we are.

This comment of mine isn't in ANY way saying I have a problem with the game being posted, because I don't. I just think that it is okay that there is a variety of opinions and personal criteria used to determine whether to play a game.

Reply

@kellyhalia,

that's why the power of choice exists. If you don't like a game, you have an option not to play it. Trouble starts when people want to impose their opinions on others. I like horror games, I don't have problems in distinguishing reality from virtual entertainment and I really wouldn't like if I couldn't enjoy and a nice scary game just because someone else hates it.

The problems I have this game are of a much more mundane variety. Limited field of vision is perhaps atmospheric but is also annoying and needlessly harsh on the eyes. My head started to hurt 5 minutes into the game and it wasn't because of the puzzle difficulty. Furthermore, the inventory management system is horribly unintuitive and tiresome. What's wrong with simple select/deselect? If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

All in all, it's hard to concentrate on the game when half the time I'm battling the interface and other half squinting to see what is going on. It's too bad because I think there's a rather good game behind all of this..

Reply

Also, is it possible to have a "normal" walkthrough in addition to this "narrative" one?

I appreciate the effort but I guess there are people like me who like to use the walkthrough for reference - as a last resort when I get stuck somewhere. The internal monologues and mood text just get in the way for me.

I like how people are taking offense to this game, but not the ones where you throw dinosaurs into outer space or kill people invading your castles etcetc. If you want to start picking on games for their violent contents, just about every game, when you think about it, centers on something rather violent or "inappropriate". Yes, it DOES mean YOU need to get over it- if you're sensitive to it, YOU need to take the effort to avoid it- the world is in no way obligated to bend over backwards to ensure you never see anything that offends you. I mean, jeez, couldn't you tell from the screenshot alone that this would be a game geared towards frightening/disturbing imagery?

Reply

Ok. This is aggravating. The computer WILL NOT accept the password. I've retyped it and double checked it like 10 times. I checked it against 2 different walkthroughs, and i went and found the code myself, and it still wont take.

GRR. Now I have to start all over cuz i got mad and refreshed to see if that would fix it.

Reply

This game was very buggy:

the key for getting the computer password (the one painted on the wall in blood) simply wasn't there until *after* I got into the computer (using the code from the walkthrough) and opened the doors. There just wasn't anything on those walls.

Reply

@ JIGuest

There is a world of difference between throwing imaginary dinosaurs into space or killing imaginary castle invaders and perpetrating acts of torture and violence against individuals (albeit imaginary).

I may be wrong, but I think it's the most gratuitously perverse game featured so far? Blood on the walls and ghosts is one thing - a naked mutilated corpse in a cupboard is something else...

I take the point that both male and female victims are implied, but both the main victims and the pictures on the wall were of women and add up to make this a violent misogynistic fantasy.

I am all for freedom of speech, but I would have taken the choice not to promote this game for the reasons above.

Additionally, I understand why games have an 18/adult ratings, and as an adult happily play them myself, but an 18 game rating bought in a shop has a chance for a parent to know it is inappropriate. There is nothing to stop a young person acessing it here.

Yes, they don't need to access it here, JIG is merely providing another link to it, but JIG has a huge audience, so to feature it widens the game's reach.

Surely there are numerous other games JIG could have promoted in its stead - the excellent 'Lights' was listed on Tuesday and is also an escape the room game?

Anyway, my other objection is that it's a bit rubbish!

The interface is flawed, the graphics were disappointing, the piano puzzle was illogical, the telephone gave no discernible response etc etc. we've seen better.

Reply
boatshoes June 5, 2009 5:18 PM

I stopped playing because I couldn't see well even with the brightness turned up. Also, the interface was annoying after a bit. Too bad, I'll just wait until the next escape game comes out to get my fix.

baba44713:
I completely agree with your first paragraph. While I don't want to play this game, I understand that people are fine with it, and that's fine with me.

JIGuest:
No, I don't believe that I need to "get over" being sensitive, just as I would not say that you need to "get over" liking this game. However, I completely agree with you that I am responsible for determining what games I can and cannot play. I don't expect the world to cater to my sensitivity.

I think perhaps my point was misunderstood - I was not, as another commenter was, expressing any problems with the game being posted, or with people enjoying this game. I only had a problem with the comment that stated that "it's just a game". I felt that the comment was implying that we people who have problems with playing the game shouldn't have those problems, and I disagree with that as much as I disagree with the idea that you shouldn't play or like the game.

After clarifying, I think I'm not going to make any more comments about this issue as I don't want to turn this into any more of a debate, especially when I agree with most of the points being made.

I don't mind disturbing or violent themes in games, but I do think it would have been good to at least mention that this one strongly implies sexual violence. (The cut scene with the chair, the bed frame, the sexual posters.) For a lot of people, that crosses the line, and I especially see how the cut scene with the chair could be upsetting to someone who wasn't expecting that sort of thing.

Frankly, I'm a little bothered by the suggestion that it is "better" that the victims are not all women. Would it be less disturbing if there was a dead naked guy in the locker instead?

@Xadoc

The game is about a girl who falls into clutches of a demented killer and tries to escape. It doesn't endorse violence and torture or tries to promote it as entertainment. It uses it as a plot device, much like many, MANY of today's crime shows do.

Yes, it is disturbing. Yes it is scary. THAT'S THE POINT. Some people like to be scared, that's why thriller and horror movies are so popular. I really don't see ANY reason why horror games should be exempted from being reviewed on Jayisgames just because some people find them upsetting. You have the red rating face there. You have tags which say it's "r-rated horror". You have a review clearly stating the facts about the game. What more do you want?

And believe it or not, there ARE ways of stopping young persons accessing the game from here. Just make an effort and either control what your kids are doing when they surf the web or get a browser filter that forbids access to pages which have "r-rating" tag on them. Anything instead of imposing your own agenda on ALL the people that visit this site.

The only way to win is for the female protagonist to use her intelligence to solve all the puzzles and eventually shoot her male captor in the leg.

This game is misogynist...how?

Reply

The game is dark and sadistic. Sure, some of the cannisters had men's names on them, but the cut scene where you hear a woman's voice screaming, then blood pouring out from what would be between her legs onto the obstetric chair is just awful ... Then, you get the horrible task of removing a key from the mouth of a barely alive tortured woman who is locked in a metal cabinet. There is no way to rescue her.

JayIsGames - what on earth are you doing including this kind of thing?

It feels like you guys have jumped the shark here.

Do we really need more of this horror, of which there is plenty in the real world, real women being sadistically murdered, real men being sadistically murdered ....

There are so many lovely games out there, like the great Moo Escape series, or the Minoto's series. They push boundaries with intelligent, creative gameplay. This awful exercise in claustrophobic hyper-sadism pushes no boundaries of game mechanics, interaction design, storyline or player experience other than making me feel sick, disempowered and terribly sad that the designer couldn't come up with something less derivative.

I was having trouble, so I resorted to the walk-through. I have a question now about the grid that's on the piano.

I was able to get the password to the laptop only via the walk-through. I was not able to see the guide on the wall until after I'd input the password into the laptop. Yes, I took the recording device out of the robe and played it to hear the tones. Is there maybe a specific spot I have to be in before I play the device so I can see the guide in time to be helpful?

Is this a glitch on my end, or has anyone else experienced this?

@alice, @paul regarding piano:

i was stuck the same way you were. the keys in the narrative walkthrough are wrong as far as i can tell. so go by this:

these 'boxes' are the piano keys left to right. including the very farthest on on the left. you only need to use the first 4 keys. hit them in the order you see below. i hope this helps.

Explanation for piano:

You're not supposed to hear the piano. The key is determined by the frequency of each note seen on the screen when they are played

How high do they reach?

(Okay, I've been coming here for a while now to play the escape games when I get bored, but this is my very first comment! By the way, I love this site. Great way to pass the time, hah. But anyhow...)

Alright, there seems to be some people getting waaayyy too offended over this GAME. And it annoyed me so badly, I even made an account to comment on it, lol. So here goes...

This is a game. Meant for having fun. And you have the option of whether or not to play it. Now, that being said, yes, this game is disturbing. Yes, it's a little gruesome. But yes, that's because it's a horror game.
Whenever you play a game or watch a movie or whatever that's labeled horror, you have to be prepared to see something that may scare you, obviously. Or gross you out. Or even disturb you. Or flat out give you nightmares. That's kind of the point, actually. If you wanted a sunny, flowery, worry free run through, you should have chose a different game!

I played this game and never even considered taking offense to it.
I mean, all this crap about it being misogynistic...?? C'mon now! It's not, really. The creator simply took the classic horror route of a woman being murdered by a man, which is so common because women are naturally weaker then men are, so it makes it more likely for the female to be the victim... That's all. Oh, but wait! There were male victims, too!? Well, then... How the heck can you complain about this at all?? This should have never even been brought up, guys!

Now, about it being too gruesome in general, and having some pretty strong sexual themes...? I agree, it was pretty bloody and had some sexual stuff thrown in. And maybe the staff here should have added a tag for the sexual themes... But on the other hand, anybody too young to play a game that includes a slight bit of sexual themes (because it wasn't that bad at all--this wasn't porn or anything...) would be too young to play horror, too. And it's not like they straight up came out and yelled SEX!!!! at us or anything... Wasn't that obvious...

And while we're on the topic about the kids... Yeah, kids could probably access this game, maybe even with parental controls activated. But ya know what...? This certainly isn't the worst thing they'll experience in their lifetime. It won't scar them forever... I mean honestly, it's not like kids are innocent these days, anyhow. The past generation, specifically, has been rebelling against all the "rules," not respecting their parents and swearing by the age of eight and having sex before high school...
But you wanna hear my theory as to why the children are rebelling more and more..? It's because of people like the ones on here, making such an unnecessary fuss over a freakin' game. You demand that this isn't something that children could so easily access. Along with that, children should never hear any swear words or see any violence, or know about any of the "bad" stuff that goes on in the world, and we should all just fool them into thinking the world is a perfect, happy place. Will this really make their lives better, now or in the future...? Will sheltering them really benefit at all?
If, for example, they happen to stumble across and play this game....so what?? What, you think this will turn them into a serial killer or something? That seeing this stuff will fill them with hate and cruelty? Get real, people. Not that you should show this to a five year old, because granted, that would probably scare the poor thing greatly. But even a ten year old? He'll survive, trust me. And if for some reason it scares him so badly that he has nightmares for a week, then he'll have learned his lesson: do not play the super-scary games that mommy told you not to.
(Sorry, I really had to address the oversensitivity with children thing. I mean, there's a difference between making sure your young child hears and sees age appropriate things and then sheltering every single negative thing from them... [I was mainly speaking of the US, by the way, since this is a North American website. I've never seen a country so sensitive as America...])

Anywho! About my opinion of the game...
I love horror games. And this one had so much potential... But there were too many obnoxious flaws for it to count. I didn't like the controls at all, specifically the weird way of accessing items and such... Not to mention all the bugs. (I really dislike having to restart a game!) And in general, something about it just....wasn't fun. Not sure what it was, but I just didn't enjoy the game as a whole.

But please, don't take away horror entries, just because of some certain people who can't handle them, lol. (Like we said, there's nobody forcing them to play!) I don't think you crossed the line at all. This is your site, and you have every right to put a horror game on, no matter how disturbing it may be. Just as the creator had the right to make this game as disturbing as he did.
Keep up the good work, guys! Looking forward, as always, to this week's entry. (Hopefully it won't cause as many problems, hah.)

i thought this was a very well made game. I dont know what everyones problem is. Sure, its gory, and creepy, and slightly sexual, but its about the game! Its how you express certain themes and ideas with these devices, because without it, you would'nt have that same "flavor" to the game. It's what makes this game unique! The creator was just trying to make a point with this. Think about it, with out these elements in this game, it wouldn't have that same playable expirence. He wasn't trying to take this all the way. And to all those people who scream bloody murder, calm down, its clearly rated, it's the responsibility of the parents to control what their kids see online.
The only thing that gripes me is that there is no save system which meant that i had to play again for every ending.
Oh and sorry for the piano key part in the walkthrough, The spoiler tags messed it up and I couldn't correct it since was in a hurry and the website wouldn't let me post it so I had to refresh the page. Plus the fact that I am a guest and I don't know how to fix a post.

PS: If the game has glitches, reload! It worked for me.

PPS: Thanks, gk!

  • Proceed to the ladder room and go up the ladder. You should now be able to open the door at the top of the ladder.

TV Room

  • Look closely at the table below the couch at the far bottom right of the screen. There is a cell phone there, take it.

  • Click on the cell phone in your inventory and once it is on screen click on it again to turn it over.

  • Remove the battery cover on the back of the cell phone.

  • Insert the cell phone battery from your inventory.

  • Take the advice of the pamphlet and dial "Jesus" 5 - 3 - 7 - 8 - 7 on the cell phone and click the green button.

  • Go back down the ladder and go back to the Redrum room.

Redrum Room

  • You will notice one of the pictures on the wall near the computer has swung open, revealing a camera. Take the camera.

Huzzah! I usually kinda like escape games made by Armor Games.
Hmm, not bad. I had to cling to the walkthrough, but I had fun nevertheless! I gave it a 4/5. Was pretty good, but wasn't amazing.

I'm going to state this so people don't point at me and call me a '14 year old sadistic freak that will grow up and turn into a murderer'. I enjoy the SUSPENSE and satisfaction of ESCAPING. I do not support nor enjoy rape, torture or anything similar or connected to those. Yes, I'm only 14 and this game is rated-R but nevertheless, I played it. I could handle it.

(I thought ratings and warnings are there to prevent children from ending up getting the crap scared out of them and having problems sleeping for the next week. Not to 'prevent them from becoming sickos'.)

I do think that this game was pretty decent and I am glad that Jay recommended it.

I personally think it's rude to tell someone to 'get over it' if they are offended or disturbed. I also think it's rude to go straight to something you find offensive and flame it instead of avoiding it.

Though I can see people not minding horror but being sensitive to rape. I just think you guys need to put a bolded warning on why a game is rated-R so that people aren't caught by surprise. I have to admit, I sometimes don't read the long review that's with a game. D: If it's bolded or if the warning listing what is inside is listed on the game title, I think less people will get caught by surprise on the content. :3

I also think it'd be a shame if Jay took out the entire horror section. I'd like to keep this site where it has a wide variety of games. From fluffy and cute, to normal to dark to scary, ect.

OKAY, ENOUGH OF REXIA BEING BLAH.

I love the narrative walkthrough. Those are always pretty interesting, especially since this game doesn't really have much words in it.

I also LOVE the other walkthrough. I love that person for putting screenshots in. Those really saved me! Whew.

Now about the game...

What I liked

  • The music. Especially the piano at the title menu.

  • The use of the flashlight. It makes me more wary considering I can't always see everything. The light wasn't too small so it wasn't irritating.

  • The atmosphere. The graphics weren't too horrifying to me since the graphics aren't realistic, but the combination of the style of the art, darkness and music makes it creepy. There wasn't an overdose of gore, in my opinion, which I like.

  • The flashbacks, especially the few ones at the start with the guy just flicking the lighter. It made me curious.

  • No talking. Sometimes voice acting can ruin a game.

  • Not a lot of cheap jump scares. I prefer for games to be kinda creepy throughout, not have screaming, decapitated, insane ghosts to be jumping out and scaring the crap out of me at every turn.

  • This game isn't -too- long so it wasn't too painful for me to try get the other endings. A bit longer than I wanted in a game that had 4 endings, but it's okay.

  • I pretty much liked all the cutscenes for the suspense they made and only 2 made me jump a bit. Nothing scarred me. *glad*

  • Most of the items weren't impossible to find. I would've completely missed two items, but only because I was rushing since I was creeped out. xD;; I didn't have to blindly click around to find items unlike some games I've played.

  • The game overall wasn't ridiculously easy or ridiculously hard.

  • The fact that the pictures on the walls were blurred. x'D I'm not going to scream "HOMG, SEEEEEEEEEX AND BOOOOOBS" (*shot*), but I just think it'd be ridiculous if they weren't. xD; I understand why they're there though cause she's in

the house of a f*cked up rapist

so they do have a small purpose in the atomsphere.

  • The different endings that are quite simple and revolve around 3 (or 6 if you include the secret ending) items. It's not like they all take place in different parts of the house or you need to do something ridiculous or you'll get the horrible ending and die.

What I didn't like

  • I didn't like some of the puzzles.
    Piano Puzzle:

I wish the maker had marked the keys or something... Kinda impossible if you don't know much about piano keys

    Brick Puzzle:

I swear, the brick seemed to be in a way different place than in the diagram... Also had a problem figuring out which wall.

  • The phone. I don't know if what I did worked. o_o; I just wish it gave me a beep or even some nonsensical message if it worked.

Thank you for your kind words about my walkthrough. I put the screenshots in because some items were a little hard to spot. Glad they were of some use.

I can't progress. For some reason the game won't allow me to input the frequency number in the laptop. I don't know what's wrong. It was fine when I put the original code in.

I have the same problem as Lizzie,

I can't put the frequency number in the computer

When the frequency screen comes up there is already something typed in there. Click in the area and hit backspace until it is gone and then try typing the frequency code.

Wow, well, this game really left me with the heebie jeebies! So that was a mission accomplished for the designer. :D
But I did find the interface really annoying. And the lack of a save button. :/

For some reason, I can't put in the password for the computer and it's very annoying D:

When you click in the password area, are you making sure to backspace or delete first to clear out anything that's in there?

I really like the narrative, nice one!

Note:
When trying to

put the battery in the phone

click on the left hand side, near the screen.

Really scary game, a couple very frightening parts. Don't play if your sensitive to blood or gore, or even moderate sexual themes. Very atmospheric, and had nice sound effects. Controls were very annoying in some parts, though. Also, a couple of the puzzles were just ridiculously hard. Overall, 7/10, mainly for atmosphere and for having multiple endings.
