Weekday Escape

JessTime Escape is aptly named, as it may indeed take you quite a bit of time to complete—this game is long! Not that that's a bad thing, of course (can we really ever have enough pointing and clicking goodness?). An escape-the-house, rather than escape-the-room, adventure, EscapeTime Escape is a complex quest that will test your wits and boggle your mind.

December 31st, 1999. A mysterious conversation occurs between two concealed figures, only to be cut short by an unseen disaster. 100 years later, you wake up in a library, disoriented and alone. What are you doing in this strange house, and how can you escape? What connection is there between the events of the past and your situation now? To find out, you'll need to follow the trail of clues left by your predecessors and unravel the mystery of your own identity. If you're lucky and use all of the house's resources wisely, you might even get out in one piece.

Analysis: James Young, the university student creator of Time Escape, cites Mateusz Skutnik's Submachine series as one of the inspirations for his handiwork. This is definitely apparent in the game's appearance, play style and general mien; like the Submachines, Time Escape involves traversing a many-roomed building, picking up a large number of both generic and odd items and using them in expected and unexpected ways. Young also borrows a few other, more specific, elements of Mateusz's games, such as clues in the form of a series of cryptic notes and a backstory based in time travel and otherworldly phenomena. I do wish that in a few instances, Time Escape had deviated a bit more from the Submachine formula (for example, Young has a nearly identical system of finding "secrets" in the form of tiny colored balls), but on the whole the similarities do not detract from the game's creativity or quality. And really, could he have chosen a better developer to emulate?

I definitely enjoyed Time Escape, but at times the game tested my patience with the sheer amount of backtracking that was necessary to complete the adventure. I found it easy to become disoriented when navigating the house's various floors; a map would have been invaluable (the provided compass didn't prove of much use to me). Combined with the fact that many of the items obtained are used in earlier parts of the house, the game occasionally became more taxing than fun. Also, I found it frustrating that some seemingly-obvious actions, such as smashing a brick wall with a hammer, were discarded in favor of more dubious solutions; this meant that at times the game devolved into a "try everything with everything" clicking fiesta.

Despite these criticisms, I think that Time Escape is great. The graphics are quite nice, the interface is clean and simple and the soundtrack adds a wonderful ambiance. Creating such a complex, lengthy and atmospheric game is quite an achievement, especially for such a young designer; I can't wait to see what Young comes out with next! Enjoy.

Anyone got the code for the safe yet?

Reply

This is driving me nuts because I feel like I made some progress but now I'm at a standstill.

I have the following items:

Soap, Wine Glass, Metal Fork, Wheel Cog, Matches, Pipe, and Wheel

And no clue what to do with any of them!

Reply

This is pretty infuriating, to be honest. The game looks promising enough but I can't see enough of it to judge it properly.

Why oh why did the maker of this game choose to put it in such a tiny window? It's nigh-on impossible for me to see what's happening and, as such, the game is unplayable.

Reply

Sigbjorn:

Underneath the game, he explains that it was originally designed for mobile devices. There's also a link to a larger version, which is somewhat easier to see (but unfortunately it's pixellated and blurry).

Reply

Also, it might be worth editing a link to the larger version into the review, for people like me who don't notice it until a little while in and then have to re-do everything they have done.

[Edit: Good suggestion. Done. -Jay]

Reply

what we need is a walkthrough :)

Reply

There is a link to a walkthrough on the game site. It is like 20 pages long though (slightly exaggerated).

There are too many steps to enjoy this completely. It is so small I would not have found at least 5 things mentioned in the walkthrough.

Am I stupid, or just missing something? I have the fuse in the fuse box, but I can't get to the lever on the right hand side to turn on the power. The fuse box plate seems to be in my way.

Help?

Despite being inspired by Submachine this game really lacks the charm and sophistication of it.The more I play this game the less I enjoy it.

The items and their location and use are not very intuitive or well thought out.

Two forks? seems redundant and unnecessary, especially considering the the second one is just used with the knives on the dart board to make it fall to find a random jewel. it seems like a convoluted series of steps which lack any puzzle element or logic.

As far as graphics, keeping in mind being designed for a mobile device, are poorly matched for the size. Tiny integral details should have been avoided on such a small game area.

I think more effort should have been spent in perfecting the details rather then extending the gameplay.

Reply

Haha, I liked the Doctor Who reference in the Airraid Room =D (click the gas mask).

I'm liking this game so far, although it's too small, so pixel-hunting is nearly everywhere.

Maybe one day I'll make a room-escape game... My favorite kind of game!

Reply

Some good stuff in this one, but ultimately frustrating. Also, contains several instances of my #1 escape-game pet peeve: non-interactive items that could solve a puzzle, if only you could use them. For instance, at one point there is a box that is suspended out of your reach, and a chair two feet away that you cannot manipulate as it is just part of the scenery. Furthermore, you encounter two (two!) ladders during your explorations but can pick up neither. Exasperating.

Reply

Where do you find the wheel? I know where to place it.

The pipe is in the basement

Reply

Reece: the wheel is inside

a book on the bottom shelf of the bookshelf in the first room.

To open it:

Enter the number on the notepad by the telephone.

This game is waaaaaay too long and honestly not interesting enough for the amount of time and backtracking it takes to complete. And on the "Hints" section on the main menu, he says that the items are used in logical ways, which just isn't true:

Oh, of course I have to throw the knives at the dartboard! And naturally I use a fork to connect two wires together! Just like in real life!

Agent Icarus January 14, 2009 6:52 PM

@flashback81 - it's not just you, I can't pull the power lever either. Have you (or anyone else) made any progress on it?

With a couple of possible exceptions, there's nothing entirely illogical in this game so far (but then I've played a lot of these escape games so nothing surprises me any more). Sure there's some backtracking, but it's not too bad.

Reply

I gave up. I spent fifteen minutes clicking and pulling furiously on that power lever and nothing happened. I even tried to continue playing, hoping that maybe I had clicked it already and hadn't noticed, and I was wrong. There was still no power. This game is entirely too long, its really not exciting enough for its length, and the SIZE. At least Submarine keeps things a relative size, but I began to develop a headache playing this game. I shouldn't have to press my nose to my monitor to play a game, honestly. :(

Reply

I'm about to give up looking for the fuse handle too. I'll come back later to see if anyone can get it.

Reply

Concerning the fuse box:

Make sure you have both fuses in, a red and a blue, and try clicking on the left side of the box. I know the handle appears to be on the right and the walkthrough says it's on the right, but in my experience nothing happened until I clicked on the left.

Reply

Actually for the fuse:

Click on the left side to turn the power on (after entering the fuses). It's a slim gray handle

Yeah, my first spoiler!

Bah I hit [Back] by accident and I've lost all my progress. Given the current state of the art includes saving progress it'd be nice to see more games incorporate it.

Maybe I'll try to finish this tomorrow, I can't be bothered playing again tonight.

flashback81, I am having the same problem. I tried to unscrew the faceplate, but to no avail. I am giving up for now. This game is really frustrating. Even with the walkthrough I can't get through it.

Reply

The game's nice, but longer than it really needed to be, and the storyline, such as it is, does not justify it.

Reply

Thanks, Jess! I don't know how I didn't see that.

Reply

I've either encountered a bug or I'm missing a step.

I've lighted the torch in the basement and done every other step in the walkthough up to step 40 -- but the back wall of the basement is completely black. There is no "skeleton area" to be seen and clicking everywhere in the blackness does nothing.

Has anyone encountered this or have I just hit a bug?

There's more than one unlit torch in the basement (I think there is one on each visible wall). Try lighting them all and see if that helps.

Has anyone else had trouble getting the soap? No amount of clicking seems to grab it.

I'm about to start banging my head against the wall... can someone please tell me where is

the fork???

I already have the water running, removed the skeleton, blew open the brick wall, etc but I put the knives in the dartboard and nothing.
Read the walkthrough and it says I should have found a fork ages ago in the kitchen. I keep clicking "the upper left drawer" -and every other drawer for that matter- but it's empty. If I found something there it certainly wasn't a fork.

I was doing great without the walkthrough until the stupid fork! XD

Finished, missing a few notes and secrets, and with a LOT of walkthrough use.

I agree that this game might not feel like such a pixel hunt if it weren't so *tiny*. Maybe the next one in the series won't use small size as a way to increase the difficulty.

The first hint in the game's hints section is "Don't use a walkthrough. I haven't written on and you won't need one." (Paraphrased.) Personally, I didn't find this to be the case.

Reply

Ok- I have tried clicking everything to get that saw on. What am I going wrong?

Well, that was... interesting. Not bad for a first game I suppose - a bit too convoluted perhaps.

I attempted to use the posted walkthrough when I got stuck at a point, but stopped upon seeing the first hint. I know some people just want to do the bare minimum, without the backtracking - but I think that it takes the fun out of the game. Personal preference, I suppose.
I eventually figured things out, but I won't share my time - it's embarassingly lengthy.

I really enjoyed it - yes, it was complicated in some parts, but aren't escape games supposed to be a little hard?? :)
it did take me ages, and I stupidly thought I'd got stuck at one point (not realising what I had in my inventory!!) and restarted.. but overall a fun little game!!
I wouldn't have wanted to play it on my mobile though - that WOULD have been frustrating!!
Oh, and the little blue secrets? if you collect them all, it's not a bad little find

if you like knowing how games are made - its a sweet story!! :)

IF IT IS TOO SMALL you can adjust the size by zooming in. The right bottom corner of the internet screen can be adjusted by clicking it and chosing 140% zoom. Or if you have a mouse with the rolling button in between the right and left click, you can press CTRL and roll the button up to zoom!!!!

Hello! First time posting, though i've been coming to this site for a while. You were right, Jay, this game is soo long! I'm leaving it awhile and coming back when I can think properly XP

<3 the Doctor Who reference in there ^_^ Now i'm definitely going to finish it [eventually...]!

"Are you my mummy?"

I am at the end but I think I may have hit a bug. Can someone tell me if I am doing something wrong?

I have the paintbrush but when I use it on the paint can it is not in the downward position and will not get paint - I click and it just says something like I need a brush....

Reply

@ ohsnap

it did that for me as well, but after putting the brush back in my inventory, there was paint. if that doesn't work, try leaving the room and coming back in.

Reply

Argh, this is frustrating. I've done everything up to the paintbrush, but I can't get it to paint. I've tried leaving the room and putting the brush back in the inventory, it still isn't working.

The trick to the paintbrush is:

You need to use it in the area that's already orange. Weird, but that's how it works.

At the moment, the game links are 404 and the root URL for the company, http://www.barking-gms.co.uk/ , leads to a holding page for their web host.

Let's hope it's temporary or that the game will get another home :-)

I really lost the will to continue by about halfway through but made it to the end thanks to the walkthrough. As the ending says "To be continued..." I do hope the Mr Young reads the JIG comments when making the sequel. Sometimes less is more! With some tweaking this could be a good series of games.

Thankyou Tasselfoot. I had managed to get quite a long way through the game but wanted to finish it cos you cant save so I used your helpful hints to get to the end. Cheers!

Hey Time Escape Is a great game, It took me a few hours but I passed. Hope you all the best in playing.

Since I already used the fork for the dartboard, does that mean I need to start all over in order to connect to power lines together in the dining room?

Umm, I'm at a standstill. I can't get past the mirror to get the soap. is there a trick to it or am I missing something?

Okay, nevermind. I figured it out. The walkthrough should probably mention that you have to

slide the mirror open :P

Thanks, Tasselfoot!

Only one problem: I would like to know the locations of all the notes... it'd be nice to know exactly HOW I'm supposed to know what numbers to put in where, after all. ^_^;

I have

Notes #1, 4 and 6, plus three of the torn notes

but I can't find the rest of them.

Reply

Okay, I finally found the rest of the notes. Nice inclusion of the

Picross

puzzle.

As for the rest of the game... well, I kind of like it, but some of the puzzles are just too obscure even for me.

Rooting through the piles of notes in the map room and study just to find the two or three that you can actually use?

Still, for a first game it's not bad, it manages to be reasonably atmospheric, I like the sound design and it's certainly very expansive.

Oh, and the Doctor Who quote was AWESOME. :-)

Great game! Takes a while even with the walkthrough. I was hoping for more of an ending.

Sylocat, what Dr. Who quote?

Big thanx to Tasslefoot, I got stuck bad and used his/her walkthrough. At least 5 times I thought "why the hell would you do that?". Spoilt it really, I was enjoying up till then.

Does it bother anyone else that you can't finish

painting the kitchen???

I know things aren't really logical in this game, but seriously!! :D

Holy cow! I finished it with some help from all your comments and a couple of peeks at the walkthrough.. would have never found the

cage for the mouse

I almost didn't play it because of the size of the game and by the time I saw there was a link to a larger version, I was too far into the game to start over.

Anyways - Glad I finished it :)

Hi Jay! I thought you'd like to know that the links are broken for this game. At least for me they are.

[Edit: I think it's just temporary. The site says they are moving their servers and hopefully will be back up this weekend sometime (today is Friday, 7/10/09). Check back in a day or two! :) -Jay]

It would have been quicker just to

stick your hand in the paint can, take the key and leave.
