Choko-Chai knows that when it comes to solving escape puzzles, cats rule and humans drool, so you've got three on hand to help out in Three Cat and the Forty Thieves. Our three feline friends witness an infamous troop of thieves opening a cave with magic words to hide their treasure and decide to sneak in for a peek, only to discover the door closes behind them. But these ain't your ordinary pussycats... they can do more than simply freak out at nothing, lick themselves noisily, and pretend they don't understand what "no" means. They're ready to help you help them get out!
Just click around to look for clues and gather items, relying on the changing cursor to help point out interactive areas, and click "about" once you've highlighted an item in your inventory for a closer look. If you get stuck, consider getting a little help from your friends by clicking the fat cat icon in the lower-left corner of the screen... if they can do anything, all three cats will pop onscreen, and clicking on whatever you need assistance with will make one of them do the work for you. In, uh... unusual ways.
Through the use of a few clever ideas and sneaky clues, Three Cat and the Forty Thieves manages to serve up a cute and quirky escape with an approachable level of challenge for almost anyone. There are a few mildly frustrating bits due to one odd viewpoint transition hidden in a strange spot, as well as one puzzle that might require some trial-and-error unless you add up all the clues, and you'll definitely want to save your game at least once since the game has a bug or two chittering around the upper levels. As a bit of crafty, cutesy midday escaping, however? Three Cat and the Forty Thieves is just the right size of weirdness to enjoy.

On the first screen, pick up the round stone left of the treasure chest.
Click on the crack with the key in it. You can't get it... or can you?
Click the cat in the lower left to call for help from the 3 cats. When the cats appear, click the brown cat (left), then the crack again to get the key.
Examine the markings on the wall above the chest. A sequence of men holding suspiciously curvy spears. Huh?
Zoom out and click the crack again. There's something else in it.
Click the lower left cat again. This time pick the striped cat (right), then the crack. Now you can take the light blue gem.
Click just to the right of the chest to look behind it. Take the bag sticking out from behind it, then look closer at the symbols to the right. Weird.
Now for the chest itself. Unlock it with the key, then take the padlock after it falls on the floor.
Examine the padlock. Flip it over and note what's written on the backside... something about a heart?
Look inside the chest. Fill up the cloth bag with gold coins (use the bag on the coins).
Zoom out. Now it's time to look around a bit more. Turn right.
The vase is wearing two purple earrings. You can take the one on the left, so do so.
Examine the vase itself. Maybe there's something inside it?
Click the lower left cat. Time for more cat shenanigans! Click the striped cat, then the vase, then the brown cat, then the vase again, then the black and white cat, then the vase. Now you can look inside.
A green gem? But it's out of reach... pour the gold from the bag inside. You can then take the gem.
Zoom out and turn right to face the door.
Examine the discolored spot on the floor. Maybe something's buried there?
Click the lower left cat. Pick the black and white cat (middle), then click the discolored spot to dig it up. Grab the yellow gem.
Look at the panel to the left of the door. Looks like it needs a left-right combination. Remember the men from the first view? Their spears spell out the combination.
It's long, so I'll parrot it for you:
(A = clockwise, D = counterclockwise)
A-D-A-A-A-A-D-D-A-A-D-D-D-A-A-D.
Once it's entered, the light will turn green. Zoom out, then open the panel for a blue gem.
Turn right one more time to find a buddha statue.
Take the pink gem from the pedestal and a wall will drop. Put the round stone in the pedestal to open it again.
Turn right to get back to where you started.
Look in the chest again. This time you'll find a clue of some sort.
I know what that is, it's a magic square! With some numbers missing. And it looks a lot like a panel I saw elsewhere in the room.
Back away and turn right. Press the buttons from 1 to 9 according to the magic square, and use the properties of the square to fill in the missing numbers.
Here's the order:

When you make the last press, the door should unlock. Open it and take the red gem.
Return to the buddha statue (turn twice in any direction). The symbols behind the treasure chest will indicate which jewel goes where.
Here's the arrangement:
On the left (top to bottom): green, yellow, purple
On the right (top to bottom): blue, red, cyan
Head (save for last): pink
When you put the last gem in place, you'll get a staircase. Go up it.
A pedestal? Well, you don't have anything to put there yet. Look behind it for a cloth.
Zoom out and turn left. Take a stick from the pile on the right.
Zoom in on the chest. Hearts? Note that letters appear when you mouse over.
Click the letters to spell H-E-A-R-T and things will change color.
Hmm... why don't we click the hearts to match the sequence spelled out by the colors of the letters? Red-blue-red-red-blue, so that's left-right-left-left-right.
The chest opens! Take the yarn and back away.
Now, let's make a torch. Examine the stick and wrap it in the cloth, then apply the yarn.
It needs to be a bit more flammable, so dip it in the jar of oil to the left. Lastly, light it on the fire in the middle of the wall.
Backtrack to the door (down the stairs, then turn left). See the six candles on the right? Light them all with the torch.
Take the pocket watch. What could we do with a pocket watch?
Return to the pedestal just up the stairs and set the pocket watch there.
Words? Note the capital letters: they spell P-U-M-P-K-I-N.
Return to the door. Click on it and type "pumpkin". The door will open!
If you leave now, you'll get the normal ending. But there's more you can do to get a better one!
Hey, when did those glyphs appear below the star dial? At least this code's easier to remember.
Speaking of the star dial, it's closed again. Use the code from below it (counterclockwise, clockwise, counterclockwise, clockwise).
Just like before, after the light turns green, back away and open the hatch. This time there's a bag in it.
Turn around and use the bag on the gold in the chest to fill it up. Cha-ching!
Turn around again and leave through the door. Happy end!
there seems to be a loading issue. someti,es it goes black before the intro scene, while other times it's after. i tried it with ie,google, and firefox and it does it in all 3. anyone else getting this?

I'm getting a black screen also when I am in the game and try to zoom in on the wall.
The screen goes black when I zoom in on the wall behind the "pierce" figure.
Yep, has gone black in about 4 different places for me. Time to give up I think.
a game with cats - i'm there! lol! too bad for the black screen :( i'm looking forward to new indie games from indiecast tho!
A bit on the easy side, but fun. Only part I had trouble was realizing the cats were part of the game.
turns out it doesn't do that at all witrh firefox. it does on google and ie though.
Choco-Chai's always been one of my favorite room-escape makers. While not as intuitive as Robamimi or Tesshi-e, you gotta admit...Shokaro, Chai, and Chibi-Nyan are just too darned adorable. :D
