Unforgiven RoomBecause I know so many who visit here love point-and-click escape-the-room type games, up next is a recent offering that I learned of from Graeme's Lazylaces, a veritable point-and-click haven.

The game is called the Unforgiven Room, and is being hosted on Newgrounds.

The opening scenario is a nod to Takagi-san's original escape-the-room games, Crimson Room and Viridian Room, in which you wake up with a headache and can't remember a thing, nor even where you are. Such is the begining of a classic escape-the-room adventure.

The gameplay should be familiar to anyone who has ever played one of these games before. For those uninitiated, just click your way around the room searching for clues and items to use that may help you escape. Most games like this end with you finding a key that opens the door, and this one is no exception.

A moveable inventory mechanism floats in the top left corner of the game window—the thing that looks like a stop light turned on its side—and can be opened by clicking on the right side (will highlight green). Close the inventory by clicking on the left side (will highlight red). Items can be used, some by clicking on the item and some by dragging onto other items, either in the room or in the inventory itself.

Analysis: The game is a decent effort by Jason Keyte that features appealing graphics and gameplay that is classic point-and-click goodness. All things considered, it offers some fun for those who enjoy these types of games. However, some of the interactivity is a bit glitchy and frustration may ensue. There are also a few very small hotspots that need to be clicked just right to get some things to happen. For example, taping together the access card can be done if done just right. Put both pieces of the card together so they are touching, then click on just the right spot of the tape to have a piece unroll. Keep playing with it and you'll get it soon enough.

Another thing I did not like about the game is the finger cursor which serves no purpose other than making the mouse movement sluggish. Also, there is one slightly disturbing action that takes place that involves some comic violence (a foot is sawed off). It's not all that bad, but should be pointed out for those concerned about the little ones. Click.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

This game was atrocious. A fine concept, clearly lots of hard work and effort from Mr. Keyte, but nonetheless atrocious in execution. However, if you are like me and simply must finish a game you start, no matter how detrimental it is to your logical faculties, here is a

WALKTHROUGH:

1. Lights:

You begin facing the PC. Click the right side of the screen once, you should be facing a door. Click the small blue square to turn the lights on. If the gray goggles-looking inventory panel gets in your way at any point, it can be clicked-held and dragged around.

2. Toxic Waste:

Click the left side of the screen to go back to the PC area. Click the upper-left corner of the nifty dancing-silhouettes painting. It will tip. Now click the upper-right corner. It will tip some more. Now click around near the bottom; if you zoom in near the trash can, it's OK, just keep clicking around the bottom of the painting. Eventually it will fall down. Click the bottom of the screen to zoom back out (if necessary), and grab the TOXIC WASTE.

3. Blender Blade:

Now click the top of the screen. It should scroll up to show the ceiling and a ledge running along the top of the wall. Click the upper-left corner of this "ledge area" until it zooms in and shows what looks like a rotary yard sprinkler. This is actually the BLENDER BLADE; take it.

4. You now have a choice. You can exploit the game's glitchiness to circumvent several steps, or go through the motions as "intended". I will write the guide as if we're playing along, but if you want to jump closer to the end:

Click around frustratedly until you get back to the PC screen. Click the trash can to zoom in on it. Keep clicking around like crazy on the trash can's foot pedal (some clicking-and-dragging may be necessary) until the game's brain explodes and a severed foot appears on the trash can barrel. Take the REMOTE CONTROL from inside the trash can.

*Skip this step if you "cheated" in Step 4*
5. Lighter:

Click around until you get back to the normal PC-and-trash-can screen. Click the bottom of the screen. It will scroll down to reveal a red carpet. Click the lower-left corner of the carpet; it will peel up to reveal a hidden compartment. Take the LIGHTER. Click the top of the carpet to scroll back up.

6. Key Card Half #1:

Click the right side of the screen. You should be on the grandfather clock screen (where we turned the lights on). Click the pink cabinet to zoom in on it. Click the right round handle to open the right cabinet door, and then click the DIARY. Keep clicking it until you get the KEY CARD HALF. Click the diary to close it.

7. Battery #1:

While you're in the cabinet, open the left door. Click the back of the cabinet, just above the lower shelf. A hidden compartment will slide open with a BATTERY in it. Take it. Click the bottom of the screen to zoom back out.

*Steps 8-15 are optional (and highly annoying) and should only be completed if you must know what to do with the CD-ROM.*

8. Click the base of the grandfather clock to get a CD-ROM.
9. Click the left side of the screen to go back to the PC area. Click on the computer case to zoom in on it. Click the big light-gray circle near the bottom of the computer case; the panel will flip up. Click the orange corner to get the NOTE. If you want to look at the note again in the future, frantically click on its icon in your inventory until the glitchy system triggers and its picture reappears.
10. Click the power button for the computer. It's the tiny gray circle in the upper-left of the computer case, across from the long gray line (the CD tray).
11. Move the mouse on the desk (click and drag) to move the cursor on the PC screen. Click through to the second screen, with the Windows desktop.
12. Click the little black eject button below the CD tray on the computer case. Drag the CD-ROM into the open CD tray, then click the eject button again. The tray will close.
13. Now use the mouse to manoeuvre the PC-screen cursor onto the black rectangle in the lower-right corner. Click (your actual cursor) on the upper-left portion of the mouse. You should receive a password prompt. This part is very glitchy so if it doesn't work, don't feel heartbroken: you're not missing much.
14. The password is based on the note you found inside the computer cover.

It's the first letter of each word.

Upon entering the password you are treated to a semi-loud song (the kind people buy on CDs, with vocals and all, not a little MIDI ditty) which goes on for a LONG TIME and CANNOT BE STOPPED. The lyrics scroll on the screen and certain letters are highlighted pink; this unfathomably boring experience will, if sat through, give you a hint to the location of the DYNAMITE.
15. There is no need to do this, but now you know.

16. Key Card Half #2:

Click the right side of the screen; you should be looking at a bed with pink (yay!) sheets and a stereo system. Click the bed to zoom in on it; click the left side of the sheets to life them up and get another KEY CARD HALF.

17. Power Cord:

Click under the bed, in the shadow near the right bedpost, to get the POWER CORD. Click the bottom of the screen to zoom back out.

18. Battery #2:

Click the stereo system to zoom in on it. Get the other BATTERY from the ashtray on the left. Click the bottom of the screen to zoom back out.

*Skip this step if you "cheated" in Step 4*
19. Dynamite:

Click the purple curtains to draw them open. Move your cursor to the lower-right corner of the opened curtains, just above the window ledge. You need to click the very edge of the curtains here, otherwise they will just be drawn closed again. You are almost guaranteed to be very irritated by this. Eventually you will hit the right pixel and the curtains will open a little more; grab the DYNAMITE.

Gold Key:

20.

Click the left side of the screen to go back to the grandfather clock area. Open your inventory and drag the POWER CORD onto the lime-green rectangle behind the pink cabinet. The blender will now be plugged in.

21.

Now drag the BLENDER BLADE onto the dark slot inside the blender glass. The blade will now be equipped on the blender.

22.

Drag the TOXIC WASTE onto the very top of the blender (don't just drag it onto the blender anywhere, such as the glass body). The blender will fill with green goo.

23.

Press the big pink button on the base of the blender. Take the GOLD KEY from inside the grandfather clock.

*Skip this if you "cheated" in Step 4*
Saw:

24.

Click right two screens. You should be facing a TV and a big blue armchair. Drag the DYNAMITE on to the armchair.

25.

Click-and-hold on the upper-right corner of the LIGHTER in your inventory until you hear a click and the flame comes on (this step is annoying). Keep your cursor held down as you move off the lighter, so it stays lit. You can release your mouse button as long as the little dancing flame on the lighter stays on. Drag the LIGHTER onto the DYNAMITE; the fuse on the dynamite will ignite.

26.

Take the SAW from inside the chair. You can also turn off the LIGHTER now if the dancing flame is slowing things down for you.

27. Brick:

Click the lime-green drawers under the TV screen to zoom in on them. Drag the GOLD KEY onto the lock of the lower drawer. You won't get any visual or audio indications that it unlocked, but the key will disappear. Click the handle of the lower drawer to open it; take the BRICK.

Tape Dispenser:

28.

Drag the BRICK onto the TV screen. Take the TAPE DISPENSER. Wince.

29.

Click and hold the right side of the TAPE DISPENSER icon in your inventory. Keep your cursor held down for at least 10 seconds, to be safe. Then release your cursor without moving it off the TAPE DISPENSER. It should unroll a length of tape. This step is very, very irritating; if it doesn't work, just try again until it does. The TAPE DISPENSER does not need to be outside your inventory, nor does it need to be in any special location. It's all about the awkward click/hold timing.

30. Pass Card:

Drag the two KEY CARD HALVES together in your inventory so it looks like a "whole" card. Then drag the EXTENDED TAPE DISPENSER on top of the two KEY CARD HALVES; it will all amalgamate together into a single PASS CARD. Click the right side of the screen to go back to the PC area.

*Skip steps 31 and 32 if you "cheated" in Step 4*
31. Foot:

Stop eating if you're squeamish. Click the SAW in your inventory screen, then the garbled yellow "USE ITEM" text that appears underneath it. Click on the SEVERED FOOT.

32. Remote Control:

Click on the trash can to zoom in on it. Drag the SEVERED FOOT onto the trash can pedal to prop the lid open. Click on the trash can opening to look inside. Get the REMOTE CONTROL.

Gray Key:

33.

Click the REMOTE CONTROL in your inventory screen; it will enlarge slightly. Click the yellow screen on its left side; it will flip over. Click the gray rectangle to slide the battery cover open. Drag both BATTERIES inside the REMOTE CONTROL.

34.

Click the left side of the screen to go back to the TV and chair area. Click the REMOTE CONTROL inside your inventory (no dragging necessary). A semi-hidden panel will open on the wall in front of you.

35.

Click the ... metal technology thing ... to zoom in on it. Drag the PASS CARD onto it. Click the green button. Take the GRAY KEY.

36. Conclusion:

Click the right side of the screen twice to arrive back at the grandfather clock area. Click the yellow door to zoom in on it. Drag the GRAY KEY onto the lock; it will evaporate like the gold key did. Click the lock to reward your efforts with a credits sequence.

I'm addicted to point and click...and you! Thanks for creating such a wonderful place to find the best of what's 'out there'!

I myself am a huge fan of escape the room type games, and I really liked this one.

If only it was a little less glitchy.

He does do a lot of nice creative things, like the mouse that makes the pointer move onscreen. Very clever. I also like that almost 0% of the puzzles involved using keys...
Keys are stupid. They make escape the room games uninspired.

Well theres my two cents.

Oh great I'm already stuck... normally by the time I play these there's a walkthrough... I've got

the cd, put it in the cd rom drive, i've got the battery and the 'i want to believe' poster, and both halves of the access card.... now what? I can't seem to get the cd to work in the computer, but I also can't seem to get out of the computer. any help anyone?

Reply

yeah man i'm stuck too! i'm a little bit further than karma but not much (dont know how to post spoilers sorry)

Reply

Oh dear. Karmakaze, you've only just begun.

There are two batteries, a remote control, dynamite, toxic waste, saw, blender blade, wire, cellophane tape, lighter, and keys.

Keep looking! =)

You might try looking up and down as well.

Sorry jay this was not a very good game. It just was very poorly designed. The manipulation of the in game objects was just awful. You have good taste, but compared to something as polished as the BBC games this should not have made the list.

Random Bob November 15, 2005 8:34 PM

Well, Ive beaten it... would have been easier if not for...

the cd glitch. Apparently if you try to get the cd back out or if you power down the computer it loses the cd.

and then theres the

foot on the garbage can. I found that through pure luck. If you dont drag the lever on the can it wont appear.

Also... exactly what do you use the dynamite for? I beat it and never had to use it...

Another question this whole thing begs: what's with all the tiny hotspots in the upper right corner on the side with the computer. They can be seen using tab. Then again.. despite getting the cd to work in the computer, I never found or used a password...

Reply

Hi Shawn, thanks for your feedback, and I agree with the points you made. Unfortunately, there's not much else that does compare to the BBC games.

And besides, I pointed out the game's problems in my review. The choice to play is up to the reader. =)

I don't believe I used the computer at all to escape the room. And the dynamite is to blow up the chair to get the saw to cut off your foot to use on the garbage pail to get the remote. How did you get the foot without the saw?

Reply

hmmm. getting closer...

still can't find the second battery (i got the one outta the ashtry)

Ok I am really stuck. Here's what I have so far:

2 batteries, the blender plugged in, half a credit card and a note

I have absolutely no idea where to go from here. Also, I was wondering about the computer. I got it to start and get past the logon selection, but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks for any help in advance.

I kept clicking and dragging on the garbage pail button and all of a sudden the foot just appeared there. no need to get the saw and cut my foot off at all.

Like mentioned in a spoiler above

I clicked the button on the can and draged downward. The foot just suddenly appeared. Then again this all begs the question... just how stupid does the main character have to be that he cant operate a trash can without removing his own foot?

okay, still no tape... I've found and used:

the saw, dynamite, both batteries, the cd (although I never could figure out the password-there are only so many 4 letter words..), the toxic waste (haven't figured out what to do with that yet..), the lighter, the note, both pieces of the card, my foot, the remote, the blender cord and blade; but alas, still no tape..

okay awesome- here's my progress for any others who need help:

I put the toxic waste in the blender (you have to click it on there just right), turned it on and it exploded and melted the clock face which gave me the key to the bottom drawer where I found a brick which I used on the tv screen which finally contained the tape. *whew!* Now, on to the access card!

Reply

Monimonika - the 2nd battery is easy to find:

Look on the bottom left shelf of the night stand

The dynamite requires a precise click:

Open the curtains, then click once more on the very edge of the curtain

Reply

For those of you curious about the computer:

Entering the password

using the hints on the piece of paper, which is

"iwtb"

, gives you the clue on where to find the dynamite.

It is a pretty pointless piece of clue.

um. . . i completed it. . . question: wat kind of idiot would cut off their own foot just to open one of those foot garbage pail thingys??? wouldnt a normal person just step on it?? weird.

Reply

Ok im not sure of a few things i cant find The 2nd battery (found 1st one in ash tray) and wheres toxic waste?

Reply

The dang tape was the hardest thing to figure out how to make work. It took many, many clicks to get it to allow me to have a piece.

Reply

Ohhhhhh finally got it - i never even cut off the leg to get the trash can open lol

Reply

I've got it! Spoiler for the toxic waste! FYI he also says "What the hell?" when he finds the toxic waste.

to get the toxic waste, I believe (lol) you must click the upper-left corner of the picture of the 2 people dancing on top of the desk, then the upper or lower right corner, then somewhere else random on the picture (I don't remember) and the picture should drop onto the ground and reveal a space in the wall with the toxic waste inside it.

Yes, Toni:

the batteries are indeed for the remote. Click on the remote to view it, and then on the view of it to turn it over. The remote must be turned over to open the compartment where the batteries go.

Thanks for your help Jay! Off topic, did you know there's another games review blog? It's called lazylaces. Do you see yourself as competing with such similar blogs, or see them as potential collaborators.

Reply

Yes, Toni, I have known about Graeme's Lazylaces blog for quite some time. Check out this entry and you'll see that I've even 'reviewed' Lazylaces here. =)

And no, I don't see us as being competitors as much as I see us being comrades in arms. Graeme has a particular preference for featuring point-and-click games, many of which I have reviewed here after having seen them on his blog.

A notable difference is that Graeme doesn't do much in the way of an actual review, and therefore you will receive a much more in-depth treatment for each game here.

I am also working on a recommended blogs/sites section that will soon put icon links to Lazylaces and other important and fun sites in the sidebar along with the recommended games. Look for that soon! =)

Never mind! i got it!!!

The blender blade takes some serious clicking! you have to go to the ceiling where the computer is and click the near top left hand corner, like a bagillion times! i finally got it, and then i put the blade in the blendedr (obviously) then the toxic waste. then the key from the clock for the shelf near the TV, got tapes, and clicked some more to tape together the card!! yay!!!

hmmm, not bad. those glitches are very annoying, i was clicking the pedal on the bin and soon enough a foot came from nowhere. i wondered if that was supposed to happen before i found the saw.
some interesting things you may find are, when the light is turned off, the PC monitor and outside scenery darken too, thats wierd. and the items menu is in the credits.

that "joke" with the key key key keyte was stupid. (for those who didnt understand, the maker was jason keyte)

All things considered, it did kill some time.
until next time, adios! and keep smiling.

Reply

How do you get the blender blade to work in the blender? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhgh!

Reply

If you get an item stuck behind a menu button, you can never get it back. -_- then you have to restart

Reply

haha this game was.. weird.
In fact, you don't need to use the lighter, dynamite, or saw if you use the glitch with the trashcan

just click on the pedal, and drag it up

Reply

if anyone still stuk on the tape......

....you just drag the tape into view, and click on it SLOWLY until it unroles, then place the left hand section of card on the left hand side of the un-rolled bit of tape, and vise versa for the right section of the access card. Then it will stick together!......and i didnt use the computer, dynamite, lighter saw or paper either, and still got out! what are they for??

Reply

brick is in the bottom drawer under the tv,(the key for it comes out when the toxic waste is put in the blender and broken out) use the brick to break the tv and get the tape, click the tape a few time until it unrolls on the access card

Reply

where the heck is the other piece of credit card?

Reply

This is actually a glitch, but it reveals some of the parts of the room.

On the right side of the window, drag it in , it will stack the different rooms on top of each other, you can then see some things otherwise difficult to get

Another thing is for some of the precise bits:

Right click and then click zoom in. It helps to pinpoint the exact pixel!

Reply

I cant get him to turn around! He's still facing the computer and I can only back up a few times, how do you get a different angle?

Reply

Jess - you need to click near the left or right edge of the game window to turn around.

Reply

As far as point-and-click games go, this isn't the best out there.

I don't like this game, don't get me wrong whoever made it put alot of effort into it but there's too many things wrong with this game.

1 - It's got the most awkward pointer.

2- The items don't lock in place, which bugs me as they can be placed anywhere in the inventory

3 - After I re-played this game, I realised you can achieve things you're not meant to with tab. For example :

Being able to pick up the dynamite without opening the curtains

Opening the first drawer, tabbing it so that the second drawer opens and giving you the brick without having to have a key

Also there's too many dead links to click on. I think there's 3 on the door, 7 on the inventory panel at the top, 3 on the blender etc.

Reply

It was okay I guess... way too precise though. I mean, I can understand having to point in a specific area but that was intense. Besides that, the things were hidden with no logic what so ever, it was practically a matter of luck.

It took me a while to figure out what to do with the remote once the batteries were put in

I don't know why it even occured to me to click randomly on the wall between the TV and the chair

The toxic waste was hard to get too

again with the precise clicking. Click the Upper left hand corner of the picture behind the computer, then the upper left, then the middle of the bottom of the girl's dress

Reply

oh my goodness..when the foot appeared it freaked me out! i mean, who cuts their own foot off to open the trash can?????

Reply

I'm a big fan of "point and click" games, and I liked the concept of this on, and the fact that it was sort of a shout-out to "The Crimson Room" (fantastic game!).

However, this one frustrated me. Mainly because the interface of the game was lacking. It made finding things (even when you knew where they were supposed to be, or how they were supposed to work) very difficult. At one point one of my items just disappeared (it may have been lost behind the menu screen as Mike pointed out can happen).

If you are a BIG fan of point and clicks, you have a lot of patience, and a nice sturdy TAB button ready...then this game is at least worth giving it a go. However...be prepared to use that TAB key often, over and over and over....

Good luck!!

I can't find the second battery anywhere. I have everything else. I've read through the comments above and one person says that it is under the sheet on the bed and one person says that it is on the bottom left shelf of the nightstand (what nightstand?). Either way, I can't find it. Help.

Great walkthrough Mineralogy, can see you shared my deep hatred and frustration towards the game as well ;) Not that it matters, as I have to complete every single stupid game I set my eyes on.

Reply

A note after using the walkthrough:

The music from the CD will stop if you complete the game and then go back and use the cheat that causes the game's "brain to explode". Perhaps because it caused the game's brain to explode. The world may never know.

Also, the glitch is hilarious. And even without using the glitch, the foot is a complete "WTF?!" moment.
There's no sound effects in this game. It made me a bit sad, especially after playing Seven Noble Kinsmen, which has plenty of sound.

no logic, annoying pixel hunts, non-user friendly interface, too glitchy. if your thinking of playing this....... dont. its not worth the hassle.

Found a way to turn off the very annoying music. Accidentally scrolled the middle roll mouse button and it was silent... for about two minutes, anyway... :)

Reply

thank you so much for this walkthru! as already very emphasized the games concepts were good but actual play was very frustrating due to poor programming and placement of pointers. all it needs is a good touch up and this game would be great!
