Weekday Escape

GrinnypEscape games are often little more than point-and-click puzzles that take place in a single room with no narrative and no back story other than the simple premise of being stuck in the room and needing to find a way out. Occasionally you'll get some sort of explanation, like a friend locked you in (thanks, Tesshi-e). This week we feature a game that is heavy on story and light on escaping, since the goal is not to leave the room but to find a time capsule left by your now deceased wife to celebrate what would have been your 10th wedding anniversary. Welcome to The Time Capsule, a wonderful, sentimental "escape" from Gotmail.

The Time CapsuleNormally we would see this sort of sentiment from Robamimi (Smile for Me, Dad, First Love), who often likes to do escapes that are not, in fact, escapes. The Time Capsule follows this pattern of design, while packing in a lot of logic, math, and use of found objects. Search the room in your former house and find clues that will take you down memory lane to the bittersweet days of yore. Navigation bars at the sides of the screen and inventory controls are all fairly basic. The lack of a changing cursor does mean some pixel hunting, but the visuals are pretty sharp, clear, and uncluttered so it shouldn't be an big issue for you. There's also a save feature in case you wish to walk away for a while or if the schmaltz gets to be a bit too much.

The Time Capsule is a newly translated English version of a game that was originally released in 2009, but don't let that put you off of the escaping fun to be had. Even if you don't have a sentimental bone in your body The Time Capsule is still a lot of puzzle packed into a small space and definitely fun for any escape fanatic. Let the soothing music clip relax you as you solve puzzles that range from pretty simple to head-bangingly hard and enjoy the mid-week escaping challenge.

The Time Capsule Walkthrough

General Information

  • Examine everything you pick up, items may be hiding clues.

  • Some items and clues may work on more than one puzzle.

  • Some puzzles in the game cannot be solved until you've viewed and clicked on all relevant clues. If something doesn't work when it should, go back and click on the clues.

  • In this walkthrough, every new inventory item is bolded on its first appearance.

Exploration I - Bookshelf Wall

  • You begin facing a wall with a bookshelf to the right, a window in the middle, and a small drawer to the left.

  • Click on the bookshelf for a closeup.

  • Take the DOLL to the right.

  • Examine the books on the top shelf.

  • Notice the fourth book book is titled "1999 DIARY" and has a four digit lock.

  • The rightmost book has a piece of Cellophane stuck between the books.

  • Back up and turn right.

Exploration II - Desk Wall

  • This wall has two paintings, a window, a drawer, a plant, a chair, and a desk.

  • Click on the left painting for a close up.

  • Notice the painting is locked by another four digit code.

  • Back up and click the bottom left corner of the window for a close up

  • Notice there's a lock with a five colour code and a strip of colour to its right in the order of purple-blue-green-yellow-pink.

  • Mmm, inputting those colours directly doesn't work. The colour sequence strip is identical to the colour order of the buttons on the lock, it must be helpful for the colourblind.

  • Back up and zoom in on the tree.

  • Cool, apparently it's a Pachira tree.

  • Click on the sign to reveal an equation written on its back.

  • There are two locked drawers here, one opens with a key, one with a five digit code. The rest don't seem to have no visible opening mechanism.

  • Zoom out and turn right.

Exploration III - Fireplace Wall

  • You're now facing a wall with a fireplace and two small shutter windows.

  • Click on the logs for a close up. Alright, they're wrapped up properly.

  • Back up and click on the top of the fireplace for a closeup.

  • You can zoom in on the closer left edge of the top of the fireplace and at the water pitcher, but it seems to do nothing for now.

  • There are close many wooden animal figurines here, but you can't interact with any of them.

  • Back up and zoom in on the the window on the right.

  • Click on the shutters to open them. And hey look! Something fell out!

  • Take the silver Key that fell out of the shutters.

  • Back up and turn right.

Exploration IV - Sofa Wall

  • You're now facing a wall with a sofa, a door you cannot leave (of course), and a closet.

  • Click on the couch for a close up.

  • You can click twice to zoom in twice on the yellow-brown table on the left see that the table seems to be missing something.

  • Back up twice to the sofa view.

  • You can click on sofa on the left hand side to recline and de-recline the seat.

  • Recline and bring back the seat two more times until a small green box fall onto the couch seat.

  • Retrieve the Matchbook from the seats.

  • Notice that after you recline the left seat back, you can click on the left seat to sit on the sofa.

  • There is a screen here, but you cannot lower it yet.

  • Back up to the couch view and click on the back support of the middle seat.

  • On the back of this seat, there's a brown table with a scratch in the center. There's also a beige suitcase behind the sofa.

  • On the brown table lies a Remote control you can pick up.

  • Zoom back out to sofa view.

  • Click on the aqua coloured book for a list of Italian holidays.

  • Close the book and open the closet.

  • Take the Coat off the rack.

  • Zoom in on the bit of aqua sticking out from behind the coatstand to view a wastebin and take the Light bulb inside.

  • Back up twice and turn right

  • You're back to where you've started.

  • Time to solve some puzzles!~

Top of the Desk

  • There a keyhole here, where do I find the key?

  • Insert the key from your inventory to open the desk.

  • Notice there's a laptop here where you can insert a disk.

  • Zoom in on the object on the right side of the laptop.

  • Notice the pattern on the object looks kind of like a set of numbers. I wonder what it says?

  • Click on the candle to zoom in.

  • Take the Wickless candle that's the second candle from the right.

Left Desk Drawer

  • Notice the object to the right of the laptop looks like it could be a five digit code.

  • What does it say?

  • HINT: The object is a stamp.

    • Flip the image once horizontally to see that it reads 58925.

    • Enter 58925 into the lock in the drawer and press "Enter".

    • Click the chair to move it.

    • Open the drawer and retrieve a stand.

Fireplace and the Lamp

  • Time to light the fireplace!

  • Use the matches on the logs.

  • It's too hot to have a fire on on such a nice day. I should put out the fire.

  • HINT: There's a pitcher of water above the fireplace, but you can't take the pitcher.

    • Wet the coat with the pitcher of water...

    • And extinguish the fire with the wet fireproof coat.

    • Take the Paper log you now see in the fireplace.

    • Interesting, the numbers written in the fireplace looks just like an equation I saw earlier.

    • The spread out Japanese paper log became a piece of paper with conspicuous vertical lines on it. Seems like I've seen something similar before, but what was it?

    • Place the Cellophane from your inventory on the Japanese paper.

    • Let me take a look at this Doll.

    • Looks like its dress is held up by a small Lampshade.

    • How and where do I construct a lamp?

      • Combine three items from the inventory to make a Desk light by placing the Light bulb and the Lamp shade on the Stand.

      • Go to the wall with the sofa.

      • If you haven't done so yet, click on the mid section of the back of the sofa to reveal a table.

      • Place the Desk light on the scratched table.

      • Stick the combined Japanese paper + Cellophane object on the Desk lamp.

      • Plug in the desk lamp and it should light up.

      • [Note: If the lamp doesn't light up after you plug it in, then take the desk lamp off the table, click the yellow mark in the center of the table (the text tells you the table is scratched), and then try plugging it in again.]

    • Making sure the left seat is reclined back (the seat angle can be adjusted by clicking on the top section of the seat backing), sit on the left seat

    • Use the remote control on the projector screen on the ceiling to reveal a clue.

    • Projected on the screen is "19991125".

    • Where do I use that?

    • Enter the four digit code "1125" into the blue 1999 diary on the bookshelf.

    • Neat, the diary is open!

    • There are four pages of clues here.

The Painting - Part I

  • The diary told me how to open the painting, what were the clues again?

    • "The password is the day we visited this place"

    • "Tomorrow is the celebration of the day Italy choose to be Republic"

    • What's Italy's Republic day?

    • The date is 6/1 according to the book on the sofa.

    • Therefore, which day did my wife write this entry?

    • Enter "0601" on the lock below the painting.

The Painting - Part II

  • Take the painting off the wall.

  • After examination, I find that the paint has a strange, soft, wax-like consistency.

  • How do I manipulate wax?

    • Maybe I could melt it?

    • Time to light the fireplace (again)!

    • Use the matches on the logs.

    • Try moving the painting over the fire.

    • Hey, look like it worked!

    • Now do it four more times.

    • Swimming Tadpoles? Nah, that can't be. Instead these are more like...

      • Music Notes!

      • But there are no lines to help indicate which notes these are. (Yes, there are letters below, but shhhhh...) Where do I find a set of horizontal lines?

        • Unplug the lamp and take remove the Japanese paper + Cellophane from the lampshade.

        • Remove the Cellophane from the Japanese paper

        • Place the Cellophane on top of the painting.

    • Sadly I don't have an instrument yet.

    • However, I *do* have another item made of wax in my inventory.

      • How do I melt the wickless candle?

        • Zoom in on the top of the fireplace

        • Zoom in again on the side left of the figurines.

        • Place the wickless candle on the left corner close to you.

        • Zoom out and zoom back in to find the candle has melted.

        • Take the Harmonica and the Hardened candlewax.

      • Now I can play the Harmonica using the sheet music from the Painting.

        • Click on the red dot on the harmonica to see that's the note for "do".

        • Use the harmonica on the painting.

        • Since I can't play "la", maybe something is stuck there?

        • Click on harmonica again to transform it into a Harmonica-shaped key.

Box and Safe Behind the Painting

  • Use the Harmonica-shaped key on the safe

  • Notice there's another equation here.

  • The box here wants a another 4 digit code, where have I seen such a code?

  • On the last page of the diary, it reads "closing price 7191". Enter "7191" on the wooden box. (Note: If you look at "GAIA" (found on the stamp) according to each letters' location in the alphabet, you'd also get 7191).

  • There are drawings of doves in the wooden box! Are there any doves in the room?

  • There was a dove missing from the table to the left of the sofa, wasn't there?

Where do I find the missing dove ?

    • On the top of the fireplace with the other wooden animal figures!

    • Take the leftmost figure on the first row.

    • Attach it onto the table to the left of the sofa.

    • Something fell when I inserted the dove onto the table.

MacBook

  • What fell down from the wall when I placed the dove in its rightful place?

    • The clock to the right of the window on the bookshelf wall is missing now.

    • Click behind the shelf to the right of the window to see the smashed clock and to obtain a Blue disk.

  • Examine the back of the Blue disk for the fourth equation.

  • Which one of these mechanisms take disks?

    • The wooden box with the two doves.

    • Awesome! I Exchanged the Blue disk for the Silver disk! Where does this new disk go?

      • Inside the MacBook.

      • Zoom in on the MacBook screen. Looks like I need a password, Mmmmm.

      • The password is written on the painting with the musical tadpoles. It's "AABAAB".

      • Nice, looks like I opened a lock somewhere, but where?

      • Click on the red rectangle on the laptop screen.

      • Zoom in on the toolbox behind the sofa.

      • Open the box of paints and notice the colours assigned to the tubes.

      • Where to enter this code?

        • On the bottom left corner of the window on the desk wall.

        • The code is Pink-Yellow-Green-Purple-Blue. For the colorblind, the sequence for the order of the buttons is Black->Purple->Blue->Green->Yellow->Pink->Black->Purple...

        • Alright, the window is unlocked now! Click to open the window.

        • The open window leaves a beautiful rainbow, d'awww. Click on the floor where the light hits

        • Is that a hole on the floorboard? Click on the small hole on the right side of the floorboard.

        • I tried inserting the File I obtained from the toolbox, but it's not smooth enough.

        • HINT: The file needs lubricant ;)

        • Cover the file with wax.

        • Most people hide other "secrets" under the floorboards - my wife hides a handle for me pull on. How sweet.

        • What did the handle do?

        • Look to the right of the bookshelf.

        • Hmmmmmm, Square-Circle-Triangle-Star, where have I seen these before?

          • Square - On the back of the blue disk. You can take the silver disk from the MacBook to exchange for the blue one in the wooden box.

          • Circle - On the back of the door to the safe behind the painting.

          • Triangle - Behind the Pachira tree sign.

          • Star - Behind the fireplace.

        • Therefore the the final four digits are:

        • "4335"

  • Take the capsule, it's time to exit!~

I was playing this earlier today. And getting really frustrated.

I have the burned log from the fireplace, and got the paper from it. I put the cellophane over it, but it doesn't really seem to be making anything intelligible.

I also put together the lamp, set it on the stand in the couch, and plugged it in. It's hot, so I thought I could maybe melt the wax with it, but no.

I see that there's a bird on the mantle that might fit on the box beside the couch. I can't seem to take it though.

The Italian History clue makes no sense to me, and neither do the books on the shelf with the years on them, or the color clue on the window.

I'm really, really stuck. ;_;

nerdypants January 18, 2012 12:39 AM

Small breakthrough:

Placed wax on mantle with fire going. Now have harmonica I don't know how to play, as well as wax that has melted and re-solidified into a different shape.

So very very confused.

I soaked the jacket in the water jug and now have a soaking jacket...? How did you light the fire? The year 1993 seems to be missing in the books on the shelf...?

Reply

I'm stuck right where nerdypants is...except I noticed one more small detail (that is remarkably unhelpful so far)

It seems you can put the combined cellophane and paper into the lamp stand. Not sure why...doing it and taking it out did nothing while the lamp was on or off. I even walked around a bit in case one just needed to wait for something to happen, but nothing ever did.

BillyTehKid, about the fire:

Inspect the couch more closely. One of the back cushions can be moved back and forth.

Reply
nerdypants January 18, 2012 12:57 AM

metacom, thanks so much! I see what to do now with the lamp!

Maybe you should see the comment I left BillyTehKid.

Reply

@nerdypants and metacom

If the cellophane goes into the lamp, what would happen when you turn the lamp on?

It must project somewhere

Is there some kind of screen to help me out?

Maybe I'll just sit down and relax...

These are hints, really, so let me know if you want something more explicit.

Reply

I already know about that...without it, I wouldn't have gotten the paper. Unless there's something else to find?

I also found a bug--not sure if it happens universally or if I got unlucky. I saved my game and closed it, intending to leave for the night, but came back to check an idea I had. When I put the lamp where it goes, the plug had no animation. I could still click it and use it as normal, but it always LOOKED like it was plugged in, regardless if it was or not. Odd. Refreshing didn't help, but it doesn't seem game-breaking.

Reply

Ah, DuncmanG, thanks. But...

I can't seem to lower the screen. I figured the remote might help with that, but it seems ineffective.

Reply

I had a similar issue, metacom. I didn't refresh the game, though, I just went back to the lamp and it was normal, so it doesn't seem to be game-breaking at all (or caused by reload/refresh).

Stuck again, after getting the password for below the picture.

I got the painting off the wall, and melted my wife's precious drawing in the fire. I assume I have to play these notes on the harmonica? But how?

Reply

@nerdycom

The notes themselves aren't enough, you need a music staff to give them context.

A staff (if you don't know) is 5 horizontal lines. Seen that before?

You'll need to retrieve an item.

The cellophane should do it.

Reply

Thanks again DuncmanG. Should be nearly done now. I'll think about this box I found for a bit before seeking help. Got it open, but can't seem to do anything with it or take anything from it.

Reply

I'm in the same spot with the box.... very confused.

Also have another issue with...

The bird...

After the box was opened, I could finally pick up the bird and put it where it belongs.

It said something fell, but I can't seem to find out what it was or where it is.

Reply

Can't figure out the code under the painting. I thought it was related to the clue in the diary in combination with the appropriate holiday date, but it doesn't seem to work...

Reply

Tenzhi--happened to me as well.

Go back to the diary, there are more pages.

Then try codes again. They won't work unless you find the clues.

Duncman, I noticed that as well. Peculiar.

Reply
nerdypants January 18, 2012 1:49 AM

Thanks, DuncmanG. But I'm stuck yet again.

Opened the box, saw the doves, got the dove off the mantle, and put it on the box by the couch. The game said "something fell down", but I have no clue where. I can't look under the box, or open the box, or anything. Nothing seems to have changed, except that the box by the couch now has four doves instead of three.

Reply

Alright, now is when I call it a night. I have no idea where to go from here, I'll be back tomorrow after sleeping a bit. Thanks for the help Duncman. Good luck from here.

Reply

That's exactly where I am, nerdypants. I may have to sleep on this, it is late.

I don't want to be rude, Tesshie is really great game designer, but is there any possibilities for Granny to not put this designer in any game review?
Good game from Gotmail :)

Reply
nerdypants January 18, 2012 2:13 AM

Ah! Got it!

There's something missing from one of the walls. It's not a painting...

Reply

A veritable pain in the backside. Some of the combinations were non-intuitive. Sometimes I figured out the answer but couldn't open a number combination because the numbers magically wouldn't work until I had viewed something I didn't need to see in order to figure it out.

@justforfun:

Why does it matter if she mentions a particular designer in a review? Seems like an odd complaint to make.

A note for the laptop:

The password is case sensitive.

Reply
ThemePark January 18, 2012 2:43 AM

And done.

I gotta agree with Tenzhi here. There was too much random guessing, and having to try out items everywhere. Also, the code for the box wasn't related to the box in any way that I can see, but was just the only code unused at the time.

Reply

I need some more help with the

diary code. I don't understand the hint about looking for more clues in the diary. Please help!

Reply

Aww, bittersweet ending. Overall I liked it, but it's frustrating when there's an item that you seemingly can't interact with, then after reaching a certain point in the game, it all of a sudden comes into play.

E.g., there's no reason why I shouldn't have been able to pick up the wooden bird from the beginning. Then there's the matter of having had to read the entire diary to be able to actually USE the code for the painting, even though the clue for it is given on the first page or two.

Reply

Sigh...I was using

6199

for the picture code when it's actually

0601

Reply

Stuck with painting code ,should be 1699 or 9961 ,tried all combinations nothing works, help please

Reply

Strange, I was floundering to get anywhere and finally resorted to a video walkthrough. It turns out that several of the zoom sections in the English version are not working for me, but in the Japanese version they are. e.g. I cannot open the cupboard that holds the jacket in the English version. I am using Windows 7 and IE 9. I've tried refreshing, but it's just not working.

Reply

It seems exceptionally tough... but it doesn't matter anyway.

The bleepbleepbleepbleep teletype-like noise of the message is so annoying that I can't really see any reason to give my time to this thing.

Colors:

I am colorblind so maybe that is the reason, but I can't find any clues for the color puzzle near the window (I thought about the colors of the picture frames but it didn't help me). So please just let me know how many clicks on each button

Box in safe:

I have no idea what the clue is for that one. Then only clues I have left are the shapes, I know only 3 of them (filled circle, black triangle and empty star).

Reply
donhuando January 18, 2012 2:18 PM

Never mind about the safe box (I still need help with the colors, though).
but now also:

How do i get the cd out of the box?

Reply

From memory so forgive me but

@berkerk

I think that was the one in the Pachiraa tree - click twice on the label

@ Spike21

when you find the matches in the sofa they will be in the fireplace

@donhundo

The colours will come a little later, after you have cracked the laptop but the code is

Purple, Yellow, Green, Purple, Blue

@donhundo

You will swap it when you get the other one

My thoughts - very iffy the clues a little too unconnected for me as a game

donhuando January 19, 2012 3:01 AM

oh, saw the earlier comments now... so never mind about the disc.

Reply

@SoraPiroB

Use the hardened wax on the file.

Didn't enjoy this. Too many arbitrary limitations and zero feedback if you're doing something wrong or if you just need to do something completely unrelated first, or see a clue for something you already figured out without it. Also little things like the slow and noisy text getting in the way and not updating properly, music not changing when the text said it did, etc.

Reply

I am stuck with the colour code. Colour box has already been opened, what does the numbers on colour paint mean?

Reply

I can't seem to get the screen down after plugging in the the lamp with paper. I'm guessing that the remote is key but I can't even flip it to check for batteries.

I also have a wax candle, but I can't melt it in the fireplace. What do I have to do with it first?

Papachabre January 19, 2012 12:38 PM

I think the game glitched on me. Oh well.

Reply

Be VERY careful:

The last equation hint is located on the back of the blue disk. You need to SEE the equation to be able to enter the code at the very end, you cannot just guess your way through it. Even if you enter correctly it will not accept it unless you have seen the clue. Therefore, if you swap the blue disk with the computer disk BEFORE seeing the clue, you will NOT be able to complete the game, since once you "use" the computer disk it is greyed out in your inventory and you cannot swap them back.

There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to complete a game because of a glitch like that.

Augh. I need much help. I have the following:

One coat

I never would have thought to do a certain thing to it if someone hadn't mentioned it in the comments.

I guess it's "wash and wear"?

One key, used

on the desk.

One lamp, assembled from parts. No idea where to put it, though.

One piece of cellophane

Can't figure out how to combine it with a certain other item. Maybe I need to figure that other item out first?

One remote

And a screen, but nothing else.

One piece of wickless candle wax.

I have opened the following:

The desk drawer.

The middle of the couch.

Is there a connection between

the animal figurines on the mantle and the candles on the desk?

I can look

down the left side of the fireplace, but can't do anything right now.

Please help me, someone! I'm stuck.

Got the box. It was something I'd noted down but forgot to try. Problem is, now that it's open, I can't retrieve what's inside. :-/

Reply

Well, I found a video walkthrough somewhere. Not sure I could have figured out what to do on my own.

Reply

Even with the video walkthrough I can't get the file to do its job.

Reply

Can't click on the box behind the couch, but I know I need to.

Reply

There's actually a tiny bit of misdirection, which I thought was going to add up to more. It makes me wonder if a prior version of this game was even harder!

The blotter on the desk has the legend GAIA written on the wide of it.

Converting these to numbers by their position in the alphabet, you get 7191, the same as the numeric hint from the diary.

Reply

Nevermind. I figured everything out.

Thought the ending would be more disturbing or sad or something.

Sigh. I finished it, but it was about as satisfying as swimming blindly in a pool of cold, slimy oatmeal while being bitten by fleas...

Unless you're into that.

Graphics are nice and so are some of the puzzles. BGM and beeping have you going for the mute button so fast that the author could have saved the effort in including them. Loader is slow and won't allow the browser to cache the game. Meh at pixel hunting.

I concur puzzles don't flow logically in many places and if the author is not going to let you interact with an object until you have been clued about it, at least he could warn you like Tomatea does, something like "Mmm, I feel I shouldn't pick Mr. Birdie yet." Couldn't have finished it without the walkthrough video in youtube.

Particularly disappointing, because there is a lot of hard, good work that has been spoiled by poor choices by the author.

Reply

I loved the story and the complexity of the puzzles, but the navigation was too difficult for me to play this game without a walkthrough. There should be hints from the narrator on how to use the objects together, and the game should allow you to take things without first finding an in-game hint beforehand.

For instance,

I couldn't look at the drawing kit behind the sofa until after a long chain of actions opening the desk, accessing and opening the safe, switching the disk in the safe with the one behind the clock (which itself took a chain of unrelated actions to get), and finally looking at a picture with the laptop that pointed out the kit.

GOTMAIL. Oh my gosh how I've missed Gotmail escapes! The Daydream was my favorite escape game for the longest time. Such a shame that this one didn't win people over.

Reply

First game in 3 years I'm going to quit without finishing. I enjoy frustrating games as long as there is satisfaction when you figure something out. This one though ...... not enjoyable at all. Negative stars!

Reply

Not intuitive. Not intuitive at all. Gave up and not going to finish this one either.

Reply

Oh yes, one last comment:

The "auto" closing of objects after picking them up is frustrating. When I pick up an object I want to examine it but instead the auto closing forces me to go get the item a second time (from the collections bar). I will close the zoom box when I am ready to do so.

Gotmail has had its ups and downs.

This sub-par game was originally released in late 2009 in Japanese. And continuing this month, Gotmail is re-releasing some older games in English, such as The Life and Dot Room from early 2010. These two re-releases are better than this game, The Time Capsule, however, no where near the good standards they had in 2006 and 2007.

What happened to them?

Gotmail is aggressively into iPhone applications, and somewhat in the Android apps too. Yet now, we see a resurgence into the PC Flash escape games in English. They even have a website dedicated to English, with Korean and Chinese available too. It seems that the development team is changing again, and hopefully away from the years of 2008-2011, and back to their early years.

The JIG community should encourage Gotmail to continue their change by featuring a re-release in English to let them know that there is a large market here. Even if the re-released games rank only a low 3 rating, it might send a message and re-activate their ingenuity and spur new games in English.

On a last note, re-released games should not contend in the Best of Year.

This game could've been much better if it TOLD me about the inability to interact with some objects until something is done.

Figuring out the

Cellophane + Picture + Harmonica

combo was pain in the back and kind of non-intuitive for me.

There are some good puzzles and nice graphic, indeed, but the game itself coulda been done a bit better :)
