JayThe Terrific Menace of the Invaders from AudiogalaxyMore than 3 years in development, The Terrific Menace of the Invaders from Audiogalaxy is much more than a mouthful. Created by a group of dedicated authors and aficionados of the classic graphic adventure games from the nineties, they pay homage to these games of yesterday through a brand new adventure in a style very similar to Day of the Tentacle.

A charming experience filled with colorful characters—some humorous, some ironic—that takes you on a journey through time, visiting musical legends and destinations of Turin, London, and even Woodstock.

We'll be back with an update and a more thorough review once we get through this promising new adventure.

I tried to play this and found it really slow moving. I really like games like this, so I was pretty disappointed.

I just started playing this, but I like it a lot. I love the wacky, obscure sense of humor - any game that let's you make a choice between Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton is tops in my books.

I know I'll be getting very little work done today. ;)

i am a little excited to get started on this but after yesterday anything that doesn't load quickly worries me a bit

Reply

Lol, who else saw the boy and aliens when it was loading?

Awww, did anyone notice the Ultima VI/VII Part 1 map in the intro? Those were the days...

cool game... EDDIE EXISTS!!! XD

Not just the gameplay has similarities -- is it just me, or does the genereAvventura logo itself look quite reminiscent of the Lucasarts logo? ;)

Im stuck in the first room, how does one eliminate the robodog?

Reply
Revenge02 April 2, 2007 6:01 PM

nevermind, i figured out how to leave the first room.

Reply

Ha, this game is fantastic. I had no problem with it loading and certainly no problem with it moving "slowly".

You could try deleting your cookies, that works with my computer most of the time.

There is a bit of swearing. I think its nothing major. Its minor really but some parents may not like the idea of their kids playing a game that uses even just a few minor cusses.

I'm stuck at the part where

you have to say the beagle scout vow.

Can anyone help me?

Reply

I'm having trouble even

getting into Woodstock. I have the divining stick, but no idea what to do with it. I've tried to find something to plant in the pot, hoping to grow a tree of some kind for a leaf? The comment before this makes me think I need to do something with Snoopy (beagle scout) but I have no idea what. Anything?

Joker102 April 2, 2007 6:55 PM

The beagle scout thing is way after that. I'll post a walkthrough to where I've gotten so far.

Reply
Joker102 April 2, 2007 6:57 PM

Part one walkthrough.

1. Getting out of the glass prison.

This is like a tutorial. What you need to do is hover over the hammer that is in the cage, hold down the left mouse button, and select the second option. After that, leave the cage and you will see a cut-scene depicting aliens talking about some strange things. (one of them is a major idiot) Walk down the hall until you reach the end. Enter the room at the end and look at the Meolody-O-Matic's screen. You will then cause it to crash. Three aliens will enter the room and you will automatically hide behind a dressing room screen located in the room. The aliens will talk about their mission. Then you find out how to use the Time-belt.

2. Woodstock, here I come.

When you use the time-belt for the first time. Select the Woodstock warp with the oldest date. On arrival, go to the left of your screen and walk towards the guardian. He will tell you that you can't get in dressed the way you are. Well, we'll have to fix that. Use the time-belt again and go to London, 1977. Then go as far right as you can until you get to the Chelesa House. Go inside and to the back of the room. Open the door with a pine tree on it. Once inside, take a marijuana leaf. Remember this location, you have to go here again. Warp back to Woodstock and go to the guardian again. Click in your inventory and wear the leaf. You can now pass.

3. A trip back, a trip forward.

After you enter Woodstock, talk to the stoner. He will take your leaf, causing you to leave and get dressed again. Looks like marijuana isn't gonna work here. Go back to the Chelesa House and back to the room with the marijuana in it, but this time, go to the back of the room and take a fig leaf. Warp back to Woodstock, and if you haven't already. Take the empty can. Continue onto the area past the bush where the stoner was and look through the binoculars. They're stuck, and need lubricated. Go back to the space ship and into the room with the Melody-O-Matic in it. Fill the can with the slimy oil. After that, go back to Woodstock and use the oil on the binoculars. You will have to look around a bit until you find the alien. (This is Woodstock, so there is a bit of nudity, but nothing too bad. Still, ye have been fairly warned.) After you find the alien. A bunch of cut-scenes will happen. Congrats on completing the first part!

I can't spell very well, so sorry to everyone who can't read this as well as they need.

Reply

First: runs painfully slow on my computer. Maybe because I have so much else running at the same time, but it shouldn't require so many resources.

Second: I can't get out of the glass dome.

I break the glass with the hammer, and then... what? I can't move anywhere else, and if I try to interact with anything it says I'm too far away. If it's like a lucasarts game, I should just click on the ground where I want to go, but nothing happens at all when I do so... Any thoughts?

Reply

peter - Flash is notoriously a high consumer of computer resources. It is usually best to play Flash games without anything else running, if at all possible.

As for the glass dome

just click on the main character when the cursor changes to a finger pointing straight. That allows the character to escape to the next room.

This is fun
I can't wait to spend more hours finishing it

Reply

This game is amazing because of all of the references...
I've always been a fan of game like Myst, or Something Amiss, but the references to things like Day of the Tentacle, Andy Kaufman, EDDIE, and Watership Down, my favorite book, make this a game I'll put a LOT of time into.

Can anyone assist me in figuring out the Beagle Scout's Oath? I thought it was something similar to the joke game kajigger, but nothing. Am I actually supposed to learn it somewhere?

Reply

i didnt think it was that fun...theres no real clear storyline, so i'm always at lost WHAT to do. I was so stuck on getting the leaf for the dress part, til i read the walkthrough here, finished part 1....then im lost about what to do again. Also, the "speech" is sooo long sometimes.

Reply

A tip: Save your game just before you

finish Part 3

. You'll do this just before

returning Eddie

or

knocking on the door of hotel room 69 when the occupants (and the door colour) have "changed"

, depending on the order you do things. (It'll probably be the latter event.)
Why?

You do not get an opportunity to do so after, and

the ending you receive after the credits depends on which of the five choices you make just before the game ends.

I just finished it...whew! It was long! But that's why I loved it. Being someone from the first generation of Adventure games, I miss the old "Day of the Tentacles," "Sam and Max" and LSL types of games. This game not only paid homage to that brilliant style, it set itself amongst them.

For those gamers who aren't used to playing long flash games, then perhaps you won't like it - but I loved clicking on everything to get to the jokes.

No quickie, this one. I'm so glad that there are still designers out there who are willing to put the effort into the details.

The fact that there was very little storyline didn't bother me at all. It's a Classic Adventure Game - "The Terrific Menace From Outer Space" fulfilled my every desire for a game of this genre.

Thanks for posting it. It took me down Memory Lane, that's for sure. :D

Oh...and the "Watership Down" reference made me laugh loud enough to draw attention. hee hee hee...I loved all of the obscure references.

(Sorry about the typekey, Jay...I'm having issues getting it to work.)

Can anyone help me out with part 2?? I've got the bootleg of Anarchy in the UK and am trying to get Michael Jackson's Thriller.. a walkthrough would be appreciated if anyone has one.

Reply

I've been stuck in Part Two all evening--I haven't gotten anything done since

getting the record from Sid. I get the sense that the next thing I'm supposed to do is get the coin from the sewer, do something to get Ruben to finish putting up posters, or get some kind of ID to show the lumberjack, but the hints (when there have been any) aren't helping.

I have

the note, the divining rod, the clean mop, the fig leaf, the weird magnet, and Anarchy in the UK.

Can anyone suggest what I'm missing?

Have you been to MJ's house? If not, you'll need to get Snoopy to lead you through the woods. Such a nice Beagle Scout.
Woodstock 1969 - read the paper Snoopy is writing, then write down what it says.
Woodstock 19- erm...later - repeat it back to Snoopy.
Go through the woods, then go into the castle.
Pull the bell...OOPS!
Combine the magnet and the string. Neato!
Use it on the alley grate in 1994 London. Coinage!
Go back to MJ's house. Use the payphone to call him.
Do you know the number? It's written on something in your inventory...and it's only 9 digits total. I guess the telephone codes are different in Italy. ;)
*HINT* You need to look at your "real live" phone to convert.

Hope that helps!

I just needed the number.. don't know how many times I looked at that. Feel a bit silly now oh well :) thanks.

Ok...I've done a bit of help for you guys.

PART 2 WALKTHROUGH
(But I suggest you look at everything...you'd never forgive yourself if you missed a joke. ;) )

Those aliens aren't very clever...they left you with your belt AND an open cage.

Go to London, 1977. Go back to the Chelsea Hotel (to the right) and you'll see that there are new guests.

Go to the room all the way to the right and you'll meet a music legend having a bit of a writer's block. Talk to him and see if you can help.

Stubborn punk.

You have to find proof that you know best, so go to Turin and walk to the screen on the right.

I don't know what a "paninaro" is, but he's very funny.

Go right once more, and you'll find a metalhead reading a book that you need. But how to get him to give up something so important?

Keep talking to him until he talks about beating up the silly paninaro.

Go left 2 screens and then enter the radio station. Grab the cassette from the trash. It's a different title each time...all are very funny.

Take the cassette to the paninero and try to give it to him. He'll tell you the name of a "really great song" - mine was a Duran Duran song. *sigh* I love Duran Duran. Hey...does that mean I'm a paninero?

But I digress....

Remember the name that he tells you - you have to find that cassette.

Go all the way to the left to where there is only one vendor. Look inside his box of 80's music (proof positive of why that decade was a rather silly one) and select the cassette that the paninero talked about.

While you are there, go into the magic shop and get the magnet off the fridge.

Take the cassette back to the paninero and try to give it to him. pfft...do you know nothing of cool? Songs are only cool if they're on the radio.

Go to the radio station. Time to use your grifter skilllzzz

Ask the dj for a song (any will do) and while he's looking in the closet, slip your cassette in.

Poor paninero. We knew thee well.

Go back to London 1977 and give Sid his biography. hmmm...doesn't that violate some kind of Time Lord Law? No matter...Sid was probably too high to remember reading the book, anyway.

On to the next bit.

Go to Woodstock 1983. Go right and talk to Snoopy. Mangle the Beagle Scout Vow and then go to Woodstock 1969.

Go see Snoopy, and read what he's typing. Memorize it. You have to. No, I won't give it to you. You have to do a LITTLE work here!

Go back to Woodstock 1983 and recite it correctly. Now you're a Beagle Scout! Wasn't that worth it?

Once you are at the dark and stormy night...erm, I mean the castle...go right. That will take you to the inner sanctum of the Wicked Witch of the W- erm, I mean Michael Jackson.

Pull the string. hmmm...do you destroy hotel rooms, too?

Go to London 1994, and go to the alley. Combine the string and the magnet to make a fancy schmancy fishing line. Clever you.

Use the fishing line on the alley grate, and you'll get a coin. You're rich! You win!

Wait...not yet.

Take the coin back to the castle in Woodstock 1983 (why Michael Jackson has a castle in Albany, I don't know.)

Look at your note, and you'll see a number there. Convert the letters to numbers using your telephone (come on...don't whine at a little work...) and call it.

MJ will tell you his secret desire...to become white. Ahhh...so THIS is how it all happened!

How to change the color of a person's skin? Why, magic, of course! Go back to the magic shop in Turin, and turn on the TV.

How many of you remember Miss Cleo? Am I showing my age? Hang on...let me tuck it back in....

Ask her about enchantments, then get the diary. Read it.

Go back to MJ's castle front and kick the tree...you'll be rewarded with a square fruit. Is this a Square Pegs reference? Am I reaching?

Go to London 1977 and give the fruit to the Little Shop of Horrors/Mario plant in the Chelsea. He'll eat it and spit out a seed at you.

Take the seed to Woodstock 1969 and plant it in the pot that's in front of the flower vendor.

Go to Woodstock 1983 and see how it's grown. hmmm...not enough.

Take the plant and head back to the past with the future plant and put it in the second slot.

Now, go back to the future and take the plant from the past.

Go back again to the past with the future plant from the past and put it in the third slot.

Once again, break all laws of time and space and go to the future for the flower that was in the past from the future from the past from the...wait a sec...I'm getting a headache.

Anyway, there's your farking flower. I'm not entirely sure how it fertilized itself, but we'll leave that discussion for you Stephen Hawkings out there to wrestle with.

Take the flower back to the magic shop in Turin and give it to the Voodoo Lady. She reminds me of the power....

Take the "potion" back to Michale Jackson in Woodstock 1983. Send it to him via the ultra space-age tube.

Boom! He's so bad....

Awww...but at least you transformed his castle into Walt Disney World! Wait a sec...Oh no!

Curses...foiled again.

END OF PART 2

Hope that helps!

Hello there,
I just wanted to thank Jay for posting some news about our game and everyone for playing it (or at least try to play it).
The game will always be free because we made it to pay homage to a genre that we loved so much in our youth.
If you liked our work, just spread the word about it!
Thanks again

But the logo has his own identity, it represent the idea that blooms and 2 hands ready to catch it.

About the flower:

did you notice the flower into the game?!? :D

Many tanks to all of you, it's a pleasure read your comments.

Stuck again.. can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do with the presents??

I have

the santa outfit and the list but don't know what to do with the presents when I'm looking at them...

Reply

I do like the game, but I'm finding that there's not an awful lot of interaction at the beginning, and so much to read through that I just want to get on with it, not basically read what I have to do everytime I examine something... I like the challenge of figuring it out myself.

Learning the Beagle Scout Oath:

Snoopy came up with the oath himself, some years prior.

Go to Woodstock in 1969. Wait for Snoopy to finish typing and hold up the sheet of paper. At this point, you should be able to "Read the typewritten sheet."

You're really that lazy? =P Alright, it's: I promise on my honour/ to try the hardest/ to accomplish my duty/ and to act always with selflessness and loyalty/ observing the Scout's Law.

@Emma

Well apparently you're supposed to

switch the presents around so that Take That end up not saying 'You're not a girl!' or something to that effect when Empi3 (that's your character) turns up at their door.

Switch Take That's presents with Maxine's (the little girl's). You'll know when you get it right.

Unfortunately, this game appears to be unwinnable on slower computers - there's nowhere near enough time to

insert the cassette with the paninaro's favorite song

while the DJ is distracted.

I really wish I'd known that before wasting several hours!

All I need now is the Santa Suit and his list....how the heck do I get it??? I've gotten this far without peaking at spoilers and now I'm stuck!!

Reply

For the Christmas presents:

You have to get the wish list from Santa when you get the santa suit. The list shows who wanted what. Each one of the boys wanted something that broadly corresponded to what Maxine wanted. Also, once you have the wish list, you can look at Maxines presents and your character will knoww hat is inside them since the shape of the presents hold no bearing on what could be inside i.e. an album being inside the tube shaped present. More specifically:

Zorro mask = make up set

album = album

atari = ez bake oven

monchichi = pegusas

and what ever else was left that I can't think of right now.

Reply

Ahahah. The hippie flower salesperson being exactly like Stan from the Monkey Island series (complete with music and waggling arms) made me laugh out loud. Brilliant. I've only just started the game, but that's certainly promising!

Get into a snowball fight with him.

Cheating never hurt anybody...except the other guy.

Ok, here is the answer to getting Santa's suit and wish list! Yay.

First of all, you need Santa to go to sleep to steal from him. Have you figured out that you can throw snowballs?

Yep, you can hit him with snow, but that won't knock him out! He likes it! We need a hard object. Like a baseball or a bowling ball or something.

Ok, let's get the Chelsea house people up. Go to Woodstock 1983. Go over to the lumberjack where the concert was held before. Grab the siren. Go back to the house in 1977, and use the siren. This wakes them both up, and they scream the answer

Go into London 1994. Say the answer to the wall, and get in. Go through the line, and you find out that you arn't a girl(gasp!) so they won't let you in. Go to the lobby and pick up the orange bowling ball from the statue. Go back to 1977 and cheat Santa by throwing the ball in the snow. Now you get the suit and list off Santa.

Now can someone help me with the

Beard, I've searched all over for it.

Thanks for the help with the Santa Suit, I had the item I needed just didn't use it.

The Beard

Isn't actually a beard. It's a mop. I can't remember exactly where I found the mop, but I think it was in Turin, maybe where the fortune teller was? Anyway, when you get it it's dirty, you will have to clean it....I wonder where you'll find running water to clean it with.....

You don't need to cut off the handle, just go in with it on.

Okay. I've

rearranged the presents, and gotten the scene where he says that he thinks he's done it right. But now, when I go back to 1994 and try to go through the secret passage, it won't let me. I've spent literally fifteen minutes solid just going over the wall with my cursor, and all I ever get is the stupid water source cue. I went back to 1977 and tried it and it worked, but in 1994 it just won't let me back through. Am I missing something?

To get the broom:

It's in the Polecats Pub, London 1994. You have to get a membership from the bartender before going to the back. It's beside the table with the two guys.

Reply

Skapra:

In order to get Eddie back, you gotta do it the same way he got in the spaceship. Since you've already got the aliens to skedaddle with the Marilyn Manson tape, maybe you should check the room they were in for anything that might allow him to travel back to his time and place.
Like, really. It's bright yellow. Once you do find it, the one hour timer on the top right will disappear and you have to get out of the room, regardless of how much time you have left. Then just hand it over to Eddie, and follow him back to the time he was in for your reward.

Reply

yo:

Once you've got the presents in the right (well, "wrong") combination, a cutscene will ensue, and this time something realllly strange occurs when you try to enter. There should be a post above this that has the combination.

Reply

Jay, what did you mean by "the alien planet Turin"?

I'm pretty sure that the "alien planet" is Earth, and Turin is a city in Italy. Note the Italian-style street signs, some of which are in Italian. Perhaps you thought this was an alien planet because Eddie looks sort of alien?

Or was this some major spoiler (I haven't finished the game yet)?

Reply

That's an error due to my misunderstanding the game description sent to me by the developers. I had managed to get only a few scenes into the game before I posted a quick blurb about it. We would like to get a more comprehensive review up about this soon. I'll fix the error. Thank you, Jon May! =)

Reply

Look, it's simple enough!

The Paninaro (episode 3)

Talk to him, and find out the song he likes by giving him the casette. go all the way left, and look into the box of "pre-owned casettes". find the right song, and trade it for the other casette. (If it's any help, the casettes are in alphabetical order). NOW! go back to the studio, and reccomend a song. be quick, because you need to put the casette you got from the box into the mixer before the DJ returns. after the cut-scene, grab the biography.

The Santa Suit (episode 3)

Ok, you have to change this around so they let you in. but how? ok, first, go to london, 1977. throw a snowball at santa, and go back to London 1994. get the "Marble bowling ball" from the statue in the building. Back to london 1977. use the ball with the snow, and sake the suit and the list. to into the far left building, and use the clean mop with the suit. click on the lobby and select "change your outfit in the lobby". go 1 room left, and examine the gifts. SWAP EACH OF THE BOY'S GIFTS WITH THE GIRL'S GIFTS OF THE SAME TYPE!!! (no, i'm not telling you. ¬_¬) afterwards, go to london 1994, use the secret passage, and go up to the rooms. BEFORE you knock on the door, save the game, 'cause the alien takes your timebelt after the cutscene.

I too have done everything that the walkthrough says, and the DJ won't let me request a song. (Tells me "we haven't started yet, be patient.")

Do I have to wander around through more screens and come back? Because that's exactly what this game needs, more screens.

I revisited this game about a week ago and after a few days of playing I could no longer access the genereavventura.com site. It doesn't respond to pings. Any way to tell what's going on? Also, jay, is there any chance you have the ability to mirror this game on fizzlebot?

Oh, incidentally, I should mention that I had to sign in with my typekey account because i forgot my JIG account password and the pasword recovery page is equivalent to a sign-in page, in that i have to remember some password I've since forgotten. Is there any way to do a password mailing for forgotten passwords?
