The Search for the Dahu

There are a lot of weird creatures in the world. The goblin shark. The platypus. The star-nosed mole. People who put ranch dressing on pizza. But have you heard of the one that lives in the alps, with legs of all different lengths? In Carmel Games' point-and-click adventure The Search for the Dahu, one intrepid reporter with the world's longest microphone cord has set out to track this reclusive beast down. To play, just click on things to interact when the cursor highlights green as you move around the area, and use the items you find to get past obstacles, either on their own or by clicking first one and then another in your inventory to try to combine them. Like most Carmel Games titles, The Search for the Dahu is pleasantly goofy in a very cartoonish way, with over-the-top characters, and puzzles that require some abstract thinking to solve... some more than others. The Search for Dahu actually follows a reasonably logical progression initially, though at some point you'll find yourself thinking, "... yeah, okay, I guess that sort of makes sense," but on the whole, it's a short and cheerfully silly little game that's good for a grin and a short break from your day.

Cut the BAMBOO with the AXE

Use the KNIFE on the BAMBOO to make a whistle

Hm, looks like that SIGN is held on with a screw

Use the SCREWDRIVER on the SIGN to get SIGN then head right to the bottom of the mountain

Bottom of Mountain

You can talk to the French woman for some funny dialogue, but nothing important

Talk to the man (Augustin) to learn you need a helmet costing 45 euros

Expensive, but pay for the helmet so you can go up the mountain

Ouch, that looks like it hurt. Maybe we can help him later

Turn the LIGHT from red to green, then proceed right into the tunnel

Tunnel

Uh oh, looks like the stairs are broken. Do you have anything in your purse that would help?

Use the SIGN on the stairs to make a ramp

Examine the button and the round gear. Drops a rope down but nothing comes up.

Nothing more to do here, so proceed right to the mountaintop

Mountaintop

Check out the view. Too bad we can't see anything

Grab the HOOK sticking out of the ground and head left to go back down

Tunnel

Use the HOOK on the rope, then send it down

It's stuck on something! Head left back down to the bottom of the mountain to investigate

Bottom of Mountain

You pulled the rock of Augustin. Take his BINOCULARS and head back up to the top of the mountain

Mountaintop

Is there a way to call the Dahu?

Use the WHISTLE on CRYSTAL

Something tiny is on the far away mountains. Use something to see it better

Use the BINOCULARS on the ANIMAL

Congratulations, you've found the Dahu!

Something not mentioned in the above walkthrough:

To get the code for the cabinet, translate the Roman numerals written on the tree by the pond.

For those of you who don't know French, I'll really translate what she just said:

First -

"Hello, my name is Christine. Let me give you some advice: whatever you do, don't climb the mountain in those high heels - it's very dangerous!"

Second -

"That's not what I said! I'm pretty sure you don't speak French."

In case you wanted to know what the joke here is, the Dahu, much like the Drop Bear of Australia, is a fictional creature that French, Swiss and Italian native like to convince foreigners is real and spread tales about. It usually looked like an ibex mixed with a mountain goat, but around the time of exploration of the North American frontier the myth traveled further and the description became more vague as explorers claimed to see them in other places. This led to the adoption of many names for it, including Guyascutus, Cutercurse, Cuter-Cuss, Godphro, Gudaphro, Gouger, Guyanoosa, Gwinter, Hunkus, Lunkus, Mountain Stem-Winder, Prock, Prock Gwinter, Sidehill-Dodger, Sidehill-Ganger, Sidehill-Gouger, Rickaboo Racker, Rockabore, Sawger, Sideswipe and Sidewinder.

Even when I knew they were there I couldn't see the

Roman numerals on the tree

because they were so dark. I had to get out my virtual magnifying glass to see them.

I think it's better when puzzles are hidden in plain sight (they could have used the bamboo) than just obscured with dark on dark (I'm looking at you too, Monkey Go Happy).

Short, simple, and a little boring. No offense on the creator, but they could have chosen a better voice actor for the interviewer...it was painful to listen to her speak and draaag ooout eeeverythiiing she saaid for a horrible dramatic effect. I can understand if the character is trying to portray someone whose kinda silly, but...the acting just killed it...
