The Roof

For MayMay's point-and-click puzzle game The Roof, you need to get in touch with your inner handyperson. You've been locked inside a gated house by the world's least threatening kidnapper, and they want you to repair the missing tile on top of the house before you can escape, a task made harder by how many puzzle locks there are scattered around the place. There's no changing cursor, but there's also not much pixel hunting to speak of, so just click around to interact with things and search. Click on an item in your inventory, then on the "About Item" button to view it up close, which can often let you fiddle with the object further. MayMay seems to specializes in short, smart, and cute escapes, and The Roof is no exception. It's not a particularly difficult game, though at least one item's function might not be immediately clear, and several of the puzzles are actually implemented in clever ways that'll make you smack your forehead when you crack them. The game could use a little more feedback to help you figure out what you're look at from time to time, but on the whole, The Roof is a fun, snack-sized escape game that's sure to brighten your day.

Yea these games should follow the convention of not allowing you to open doors until you've at viewed the clues. There's the one author who goes so far as to pop up a message saying "I've no clue how to solve this" when you haven't navigated to the screen/object with the clue yet.

yep... finished the game before it was supposed to end...
*sigh*

Seems like there could be a lesson about brute force solving here

TomaTea is the developer that puts the "I have no clue how to solve this" on their puzzles! When I saw the gate puzzle I didn't even try to input anything (just made a note of it), but once I went back to slot in the right answer, I realised just how easy it would have been to guess. It's a shame, since the rest of the game was actually pretty good!

Well, call me silly, but I thought is was a cute little game. I did get a bit stuck. I knew that phone reader ap was for something, but just couldn't figure it out. (face palm)

If there's one thing I feel most escape games don't do correctly, it's the multi-letter word puzzles:
1. You have to click lots and lots of times just to input a word (the nine-letter word puzzle in one of the Aries Escape games was a nightmare)

And of course, that one puzzle in this game which doesn't give all 26 letters has an answer that can be guessed from the available letters.

2. Players get tempted to brute force with random words... "What could this four-letter code be? There's four blue vases in the room, so let's try 'four', 'blue', 'vase', ...!" There's nothing that tells the player what kind of clue to look for.
3. It's hard to get them to look natural. The smallest details can break the immersion, so they don't have a convincing or realistic look. (Consider: letter casing, positioning, even the color choices. It's practically impossible to get this perfect.)

In general, they're bad in more than one way, usually wasting player time on uninsightful gameplay which can be averted by sticking with symbol-based codes (This game might use codes too much, but that's due to the lack of keys!)

I am stuck. I have

a box knife and a roof tile.

Where can I use the

box knife?

I feel like I have tried everywhere!

Are you in the house yet? If not:

Check the right pillar of the gate that keeps you locked in, there is a QR code bordered by the shapes you need to unlock the house.

If you're in and still stuck:

Look at the picture above the box with three locks, you'll notice that there are different numbers of leaves on each of the branches. Turn around to face the door, move the chair to get another item, and then punch those leaf numbers into the upper locked box that's part of the bookcase. You'll receive a cell phone.

As for me, I can't seem to tell where I'm supposed to find the code for the three letter box, which is really annoying.
