The Happy Escape 8

DoraWhen it comes to escape game creators, few developers are likely doodled in notebooks of their players with little hearts around them as often as Tesshi-e probably is, and so The Happy Escape 8 definitely lives up to its name. As the game opens (after you set the language to English if you can't read Japanese!), you're just about to close up your coffee shop at the end of a tiring day when Santa Claus magics you away. Christmas is finally over, and he wants nothing more than to relax with a cup of your famous coffee, which must get some seriously awesome Yelp reviews to kidnapping you to the North Pole. Santa, we seriously need to have a talk about boundaries, though considering all that "he knows when you're sleeping" stuff, that's probably a lost cause. There's no changing cursor, so just click everywhere to navigate and hunt for things to interact with. Items you're carrying can be viewed up close if you click them and then choose "about item", which can sometimes reveal hidden functions when you click on them again. If you want to get out, you'll need to brew Santa a cuppa, and don't forget about those Happy Coins either!

There's just something about a Tesshi-e escape game that always seems so sweet and lighthearted. The Happy Escape 8 manages to be both silly and smart, which is hard to pull off, though it's not as difficult as some games Tesshi-e has made before. A lot of the items you'll need to barrista your way out are hidden behind coded locks, and finding the clues to open them is mostly just a matter of observation. It's short and sweet in all the right ways, complete with a little gift at the end, and while you may wish it lasted longer, that's sort of the ultimate praise to give a developer, isn't it? Kick back with a cup of your own favourite beverage and relax with this post-Christmas treat. I wonder what "Mild Escape Coffee" tastes like anyway?... birds and hippos?... gross!

Happy Escape! I was starting to worry we wouldn't get one this holiday season.

Thrilled I got through this one without any hints. Not often I manage that, for all I love good escape games.

My first attempt at a walk-through:

Uh-oh, Santa's kidnapped us again! Well, at least he didn't lose all the gifts again this year. Right then, let's make some coffee!

Looks like Santa moved since last time. Cozy little place. First thing we see is the door - locked! Santa's really serious about his coffee, isn't he? Ah well, let's explore!

There's a picture of Santa on the left. Bit wobbly - bet there's something hidden behind it!

On the right is a cabinet. The bottom is locked with a 4-digit code. There's two drawers in the middle, both with key locks. On top are glass doors - oh hey, they're open!

There's a Mr. Birdie on a box that says "10 Happy Coins" - Santa didn't say anything about finding happy coins! Fine, fine, 10 happy coins it is.

Next to that are 3 bottles of Mr. Birdie wine.

The third bottle has a 5 on it - or is that an S? Better keep that in mind for later.

Nothing else here, turning left!

Ooo, an old-fashioned woodfire stove! I bet this place is really cozy when there's a fire burning.

There's 6 Santa statues in the window, how cute! With all those different poses they almost look like they're dancing.

A 3-drawer chest is under the window, with a coffee pot and a grinder on top. No instant coffee for Santa!

The top drawer is locked, and has 3 knobs we can turn.

Oh hey, the middle drawer is unlocked! Of course, the box inside it is locked, and we can't even take it with us.

A 3 letter code - maybe that 5 on the bottle was an S after all?

Ah, nope, S isn't one of the letters available. Nevermind!

The bottom drawer has a 3x3 button grid. The buttons light up green when pressed. Anyone for tic-tac-toe?

To the right of the chest is a shelf with a book on it. Mr. Hippo's day, huh? Sounds like a kid's storybook.

With... a lot of numbers? And math symbols. 10 pages of them. That's more math than I want to deal with right now...

Hm, there's a panel under the shelf. Looks like it's screwed in place. What do you want to bet there's a screwdriver around here somewhere?

That's it for this view, to the left we go!

This looks promising! A bed, a table, a chair, a cubbyhole, and a tall shelf the full length of the wall. Oh, except the chair is a red herring - can't even search it. The little table needs a 3-digit code - don't know what that'll be yet. Moving on!

The cubbyhole above the table has a little device in it - two Mr. Birdies and a mug on top of a box that says COFFEE with a slot underneath. Going to need that mug if we're making coffee.

Wait, there's something stuck to the bottom of the mug. A happy coin! That's the first one.

Let's check out that bed. I bet it'd be really comforatble all made up.

Well, we can at least fluff those little pillows a bit. Oh hey, our second happy coin!

There's something under the bed, too; a little wheeled... something. With a face.

And a blue panel on the back.

That covers a slot of some kind. Wonder what goes in there?

Above the bed is a placard with 3 Santa faces. I'm starting to notice a theme in the decorations...

The center Santa has an E on his beard, better make a note of that.

Oh, the heads turn, but only partway around.

The first one turns 5 spaces, the second 4, the third 7.

Hm... that E on the middle beard looks like a 3 now - bet you anything it goes with that S/5 from the wine bottle.

That wall-length shelf is really high... we'll need a boost to get a look up there.

Fortunately, the bed's right underneath it.

Check the left side and find another happy coin!

There's a green ball on the far end of the shelf - no way I can reach it from here. I'll be back for you, little green ball!

That's it for here, let's climb back down and turn left again.

Only thing new here is a window with 3 plants and a Mr. Hippo.

Mr. Hippo needs a 4-digit code - please don't tell me we have to do all the math in that book after all! Sorry, Mr. Hippo, you'll have to wait.

Let's get a closer look at those plants - oh, we can pick them up!

There's a 7 on the coaster under the first one.

Under the second is our 4th happy coin! Haven't solved a single puzzle yet, and we're almost halfway through - not bad.

Nothing under the third plant.

I think we've seen as much as we can. Time to start solving!

We've got a lot of things that need codes, but have we found any of the codes they need? Well, the little table by the bed needs 3 numbers.

And we've got 3 numbers.

Each found on something that was in a set of 3.

So we just need an order.

For the three plants, the 7 was under the first plant.

The three Santa heads had a 3 on the second beard.

And the three wine bottles had a 5 on the third bottle.

Put the numbers in that order, and get a screwdriver!

Only place we've seen screws was the panel under the small shelf.

Take that down and we find firewood

Oh, and a spade key.

Take a closer look at that panel while we're here, and we find a happy coin stuck to the backside. Halfway done!

The door and the two cabinet drawers are the only locks that need keys

No luck with the door of course, but the spade key will open the left cabinet drawer.

Inside we find a coffee filter and happy coin #6.

Okay, what other clues do we have? Those turning Santa heads remind me of the 3 knobs on the chest of drawers.

Turn the knobs as far as the heads would turn

5 space, 4 space, 7 spaces

and there's a jar of coffee beans.

Oh right, we're supposed to be making coffee... but we still need water, and something to brew it in.

As long as we're over here, let's take a closer look at those 6 Santa figurines in the window.

Hm... you know, maybe they're not dancing. Maybe they're pointing? Well, except they gesture with both hands.

That Santa in the wobbly painting is gesturing with both hands.

Try clicking the corners of the wobbly painting the way the figurines point -

Upper right, lower left, upper left, lower right, upper left, lower right

- and the painting slides up to reveal a cubby!

There's a kettle filled with water - that'll help with the coffee-making.

There's also a Mr. Hippo with his mouth open

and 3 numbers

428

We already opened the drawer that needed 3 numbers, and the Mr. Hippo in the window needs 4.

Wasn't there something else with Mr. Hippo on it?

Oh right, the math book from hell! But that's got more than enough numbers without adding this set!

Unless we can use this new set to make the ones in the book easier to manage.

Page 4 has 7155

Page 2 has -

Page 8 has 2014

7155 - 2014 = 5141

Plug that into the Mr. Hippo on the window sill, and he opens his mouth to give us a battery!

So what needs a battery?

How about that weird wheeled thing we found under the bed?

Yep, one battery fits perfect in that little hole in the back.

Now, is there anyplace to send this thing rolling that we can't reach otherwise?

Well, there is that little green ball on the high shelf above the bed.

Climb on up, send the weird little guy rolling, and sure enough, it knocks the ball off the shelf.

It probably landed next to the stove.

Oh, and it's one of those balls that opens up

and there's matches inside!

Let's get this woodstove burning.

Put in the firewood

take a match, and...

um... why won't it light? Maybe we need an accelerant of some kind - anyone seen any lighter fluid?

Okay, let's take a closer look at what we have. Coffee beans, happy coins, mug, kettle of water, matches with a green-and-white pattern on the box, screwdriver, filt- wait, what's that pattern?

Green and white squares. In a 3x3 pattern.

The bottom drawer on the chest has a 3x3 set of white buttons that turn green when pressed.

Recreate the pattern

Press the center and all 4 corners

and the drawer reveals newspaper! Bet we can use this to start that fire.

Oh, there's a happy coin too, don't forget that.

So, put the newspaper on the wood, light the paper - ooo, nice hot fire to heat our kettle!

It even says HOT on the glass.

Put the kettle on to boil, and think about what's left while we wait. A key drawer, a number code cabinet, a box with a 3-letter code...

3 letters. Like HOT? Back to the middle drawer in the chest!

Sure enough, HOT works

we've got a club key.

The key opens the right drawer on the cabinet,

which has an odd cup-thing in it.

Hey, the filter fits in it! I bet that flat bottom fits over the coffee pot too.

Now we just need ground beans and hot water.

Oh, right, the water! Looks like it's hot now, better take it off the stove before it boils away.

Time to make coffee!

Pour some beans into the coffee grinder, spin the handle, and fresh-ground coffee, ready to brew.

But before you put the jar of beans away, take another peek inside - another happy coin!

Now pour the grinds from the grinder into the filter.

Put that on top of the coffee pot

and pour the hot water on top.

Mmm, just smell that brew...

and look at that pot.

A 4-number code!

Only one place left to put that.

Don't forget to pour the coffee, of course. Then go open that bottom cabinet.

I thought Santa said he got all the gifts delivered this year? Oh well, we can give him the bag when we give him the coffee.

Wait, there's a happy coin stuck to the back of the bag. That makes 9!

But the Mr. Birdie counter wants 10 happy coins. Coffee's made, what's left to do?

Well, there's still that Mr. Birdie device in the back wall cubbyhole, where we got the mug.

It says COFFEE on it

Maybe we should put the mug back now that it has coffee in it.

Yep, there's the 10th coin! (You can take the coffee back if you want - there's still some in the pot for Santa...)

Go back to the cabinet, and give the Mr. Birdie counter the 10 coins. Yay, a heart key! Open the door and tell Santa his coffee is ready.

Oh, those extra gifts were for YOU! Except you can only pick one... oooh, what to get?

The left package:

A bottle of Mr. Birdie wine

The middle package:

A set of 3 happy coins in gold, silver and bronze

The right package:

The key to happiness

Happy New Year!

Am I the only one who thinks it's time for Tesshi-e to start selling some Mr. Birdie and Mr. Hippo merch on their website? Perhaps send a happy coin with every shipment. :)

@ houseworkisevel

Lol, agreed. And for the season, Tesshi-e could sell Dancing Santas too!

As for the game, I think I need to learn how to

make coffee

:|

I think I have everything I need, but no matter what I try to combine, nothing works. So far, I have the following (unused) items...

kettle of boiled water
cup with piece of paper in it
jar of MILDESCAPE Original Blend Coffee (maybe that could be a brand idea too!)
empty mug
7/10 Happy Coins

I know I have to use the coffee pot on the chest of drawers at some point, and I figure once I make the coffee, I will get

the code for the cupboard doors.

Reply

I've been trying to find a good Tesshi-e T-shirt for ages!

Also been waiting for their Christmas edition for what seems like ages . . . now, off to play!

Reply

@stuckinabasement Have you noticed that one of the items you have is

WHOLE coffee beans?

Reply

@stuckinabasement
You're still missing two items:

A coffee filter and that thing that holds it.

I think I found them in the cabinet drawers.

I've used the mug of coffee and have 9 coins, but no clue what to do next.

Reply

POP and I'm out. Seems to be one ending and three gifts to choose from.

Reply
stuckinabasement December 28, 2014 2:16 PM replied to Snarfhead

Thanks, Snarfhead. To be honest, I didn't know what to make of your clue then I realised I could

use the beans in the thing next to the coffee pot, which, it turns out, is a coffee mill!

@ Konrad, I already had the

coffee filter and thing that holds it ... aka my "cup with piece of paper in it". Like I said, I dunno anything about coffee :P

Also, I finally got out, but before I did,

I looked for ages for a Happy Coin escape! I think you're right about the one ending.

Reply
Martybhoy December 28, 2014 2:45 PM replied to stuckinabasement

The 3 presents you get to choose at the end, from left to right, are:

Mr Birdy's Wine, Happy Coin, Key to Happiness

Reply

As usual with me, I'm stuck very near the end. :-) I have 9 happy coins, but am stuck on the last one.

I made the coffee and unlocked all the drawers and cabinets. I have a bag from Santa, which I can't open yet, and I put nine coins in Mr. Birdy's contraption.

I've already put the mug of coffee in the *other* Mr. Birdy gadget, which netted me the ninth coin. I just don't see any other puzzles to solve that could get me the last happy coin. :-/

I always like a Tesshi-e escape. So chipper!

Reply

argh! Spent so long looking for that tenth coin to no avail.

Reply
mittudomain December 28, 2014 2:57 PM

Could someone confirm that there's only one ending this time?

I liked this game - a true Tesshi-quality one.

Reply

Never mind! POP. The last coin was

on the back of the board that I unscrewed from the shelf where the book is.

Sneaky!

Billy-o, the last coin is a bit cheeky!

You need to revisit an item that you've already used!

Reply

OH haha, looks like you were stuck elsewhere, Billy! Glad you cracked it though.

Reply

As far as how many endings there may be, my recollection is that whenever we're asked to collect 10 Happy Coins, there's just the one ending. Am I correct there?

Reply

looking forward to the walkthrough :)

I cannot believe I managed to finish a Tesshi-e game without any hints or help! (I guess being a coffee drinker does make it easier ;-) )

@houseworkisevil

Behind the Santa picture there is a hippo with three digits on it. Those digits are page numbers in the book, which pages to read and which order to read them in.

don't they already? From a quick look at their website, I thought they did.
