greatlivingroomescape.gifJohnBWhat do a hamster, an umbrella, and half a pair of glasses have in common? I'm not telling, but The Great Living Room Escape just might. The just-released follow up to The Great Kitchen Escape from Pastel Games (yes, the site Submachine creator Mateusz Skutnik calls home) is filled with brightly-colored art, zany items, and excellent point-and-click room escape gameplay.

Wielding the mouse as your do-all, find-all, examine-all tool, simply slide the cursor around and look for hotspots where you can zoom in or items you can pick up. The arrows at the bottom of the screen let you navigate the livingroom. Objects you grab are stored in your inventory as bubbles at the top of the screen. To use them together, just click one, move it to the other object, and click again.

A great visual style is the perfect hook for The Great Living Room Escape, and the animations are fluid and packed with charm. The only real drawback is its length: five to ten minutes, tops. There are only a few screens to explore and half a dozen items to collect. Escaping the room is a simple matter of gathering everything and using it in the right combination (accomplished by a quick bout with Mr. Trial-and-Error).

It may be fleeting, but The Great Living Room Escape is a great casual gaming diversion.

A very cute game! I'm surprised at the nasty comment on the linked page - hopefully it was a joke. Pretty easy, but worth it for the funny solution.

heaven forbid you could reach in the fishbowl

WOW! That was the shortest time EVER before a walkthrough was put up!

Maqrkk - send me an email using my address at the bottom of the left sidebar and I'll send you a coupon for a free game from Big Fish! :)

Reply

Love these games! But waaaaayyyyyy to short! Only took me 3 minutes! (and Crab: I think they were trying to insinuate that the fish would eat your hand)

Reply

Short, but entertaining. My favorite thing about this game was the animation whenever you would combine items.

Reply

Agreed, the animations were awesome!

Reply

Painorama's walkthough was great... ;o) easy and fun game with great animation cut sceens ..

Reply

"heaven forbid you could reach in the fishbowl"

Crab: Didn't you see the animation? That's a piranha in there. :D

Reply

Now the real question is:

what happened to the hamster after he gave you the key?

Reply

Sometimes it's so nice to have a five minute distraction.

Reply

That hampster was so cute with his super smacking powers. It was such a satisfying smack, too. SMACK. So adorable.

Reply

A cute little game. It wasn't that hard to figure out. There's just one thing that is bothering me...

What happens to the hamster after the game is done? He wasn't back in his cage when I looked. Does he go on to live a life dependent on steroids or does he gain a new love for scuba diving?

Reply

I think the developers deliberately left it open-ended so you could draw your own conclusions. For example, I believe that the hamster transcended a physical state and became a being of pure energy, all thanks to steroids. The lesson being steroids are awesome!

Reply

Couldn't the person have just used the straw to drain the bowl? Or better yet, just dumped the damn thing down the drain, and take the key..... Heaven knows that poor cactus in the window could use some water......

Reply

"Couldn't the person have just used the straw to drain the bowl? Or better yet, just dumped the damn thing down the drain, and take the key..... Heaven knows that poor cactus in the window could use some water......"

Ummm...that's a piranha. And piranhas have a knack for jumping.

Reply

So funny! I thought this one was even more fun than the first--but having played through the first one I was ready for the silliness. I wondered about

the fate of the hamster myself--maybe his superpowers only lasted for a few minutes, or perhaps when he turned his back on the piranha it snuck up on him!

Any way, this was extremely fun--and so nice to have one I can play in a few minutes with no frustration or help. YAY!

Reply

There should have been an alternate ending if you fed the steroids to the piranha. Or the cactus, for that matter...

Reply

I had to get a hint just to find out what I was trying should be working...

All in all very fun, like the music and graphics, like the ingenuity. WAY too short and easy though. At that length you should be able to put out a couple of these a week... please?

Terran Nytefyer April 15, 2008 1:06 AM

That was amazingly . . . cute.

Reply

The key still appears in the little castle after you get it and zoom out. No biggie. It's a cute game. I agree that funky things should happen when you feed the steroids to anything other than the hamster, etc.

Reply

Great,

Combining RUBBER with STRAW doesn't work, but combining STRAW with RUBBER works.

A smallish issue in an otherwise pretty fun'n'wacky game. Love the cutscenes!

Reply

Nice one, a good sequel to the kitchen. Same fun, same humor, same difficulty level. I liked it.

(Just a small observation: at the end when you see the door being opened, the key is rotated in the keyhole counter-clockwise, so the door is actually shot, not opened :)

Reply

This game made me happy :) fantastic graphics, but I agree, it was too short

Reply

Cute but not long enough... took all of 2 minutes

Reply

my guess is that the hamster gained super powers and went to beat up pikachu.

Reply

Oh, it was so cute!

As for the hamster, I suspect that it took off. Too bad they don't show afterwards a hamster-sized hole with bits of drywall falling off. Super-Hamster is off to save someone's day!

Reply

hmm, all of the comments on what happens to the hamster are negative. one has the hamster beating up someone, one says steroids are good I AM TALKING TO YOU NEDDO, I HAVE MY EYE ON YOU! DO NOT CROSS A NINJA!!!!!!!!!!!!, and one had the hamster die. i shall bring it upon myself to add some positive comments........ after dinner. seeya!

YES I DO HAVE AN OFFICIAL NINJA LICENCE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH >:0

Heh, I really liked this game. Nice goofy style - I loved the 3D turnaround animations when combining objects. The bizarre logic reminds me of that old OldManMurray article on "Who Killed Adventure Games?", except it was fully tongue-in-cheek here :D

Reply

i say the hamster went on to discover a cure for cancer, HAPPY NOW, NINJI?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?1/

yes

Reply

Oh god. That was so adorable. Oh, man.

WOW that's the first time I've finished a escape game with out a walk through O.O and in under 5 min XD

Love the music.

not quite as...realistic...as the first one. but absolutely adorable! <3

For everyone who's asking about the hamster, he OBVIOUSLY went off to pursue a career in major league baseball.

hmm. seems I can't combine items to make the scuba mask. I have clicked and tried to combine the items in all different ways. everything else seems to work fine.

Reply

Hooray! I think I'm getting better at this! I forgot to grab

the rubberband from the bottom drawer

but after I peeked at a walkthrough to find that, I did the rest by myself. YAY ME! :)

Back to the stuff people actually care about...
Fun game, short, sweet, and definitely capable of making five or so minutes go by so much faster.

Reply

Haha, there's a glitch.

After you get the key and zoom out from the fish bowl, you can see a key wedged in the castle. But when you zoom in, the key is gone!

Reply

This was a fun game. Great graphics. An excellent second to The Great Kitchen Escape. Too short though... simply because it's so much fun to play.

Reply

To everyone who liked this game but thought it was too easy: try the SpyFox games by Humongous Entertainment. The art is remarkably similar, the concept also similar but definitely more complex and multi-layered, and there are multiple endings.

Reply

This game was so cute and fun!!

Reply

Man that was so easy, finished within 5 minutes without a walkthrough.

Reply

LOL!!! The moose and dead fish blink!

Reply

Haha! This is absolutely adorable!! Hamster on steroids!!

Reply

if theres only one door.... where is the door that you came in through the bathroom????

Reply

Hahaha, so funny! Hamster on steroids saves the day!

Reply

lols so cute when the hamster beat the fish

Okay, TeShawn, you are totally right about grabbing the key. Parahnas generally won't attack something unless there is blood in the water. So unless some bonehead tried grabbing the cactus (which might not make you bleed anyways!) you should be able to take the key. I love this game (peeked @ the walkthrough the 1st time though;)

Reply

How do you get the fish out?

Reply

ONE thing that bothered me at the end:

The hamster DISAPPEARED! The fish looks happy after being punched in the face, but the hamster is gone and his cage is still empty. Poor hamster. Bet he's sick from all those steroids... LMAO

YES I know I'm strange but I couldn't help but think of it
