The Fun FairlceninexpAll is not what it appears in Anode and Cathode's latest release, The Fun Fair. Thankfully, you won't find any creepy clowns in this point-and-click adventure game, but you will find a slew of carnival themed mini-games, intriguing characters and some interesting puzzles.

Part 1 of The Fun Fair starts with your character standing outside the entrance to a fairgrounds with various amounts of coins and counters (the amount will depend on the difficulty level you have chosen). You are not quite sure why you decide to enter, but it has something to do with Sophia's mystery. Using your mouse to click your way around the expansive fairgrounds (or, if you prefer, click on the mini-map in the top right corner) you will encounter useful items used to further your quest as well as additional coins and counters. The coins are used to play the carnival mini-games, which make up quite a large portion of actual gameplay. Completing a carnival game will unlock items that will ultimately allow you access to later portion of the game. Some of these games are purely luck based (the cleverly named Wheel of Luck is probably a good example), some are easy enough to accomplish with very little skill (Horse Race) and some require the equivalent speed-mousing dexterity of a Ninja neurosurgeon to complete on the hardest game setting (The Far West Legend).

The Fun FairThere are 3 prize tiers in the carnival games: the lollipop, the useful inventory item and the trophy. The lollipops are for doing poorly in a game, the useful items for doing well and the trophy is awarded when you've been outstanding. Fortunately you will need quite a few lollipops to exchange for items as the game progresses and even more fortunately the trophy items are non-essential — they are just a point bonus to your overall score.

After completing the carnival games and getting at least all of the useful items new character dialog options will become available. This will give you the opportunity to trade for needed items, which will in turn allow you to access new areas until you can progress to the adventure's final scene.

Analysis: There's a lot of diversity in The Fun Fair which makes for an eclectic game. Some players might find that the combination of different game elements leads to an incongruent gameplay experience. Other players not usually attracted to the genre might find an unexpected treasure. Unlike Anode and Cathode's other point-and-click games, The Fun Fair also requires the player be marginally comfortable with fast paced mousing (usually found in action games) which makes The Fun Fair rather unique in the point-and-click adventure genre, which will likely turn off more casual players. The few puzzle/character interaction elements to be found are straight forward and not difficult — the difficulty level is instead included in the carnival mini-games.

The control scheme for actual character navigation is fluid, although the pseudo-isometric point of view might take a few minutes to get used to. Inadvertently walking into a carnival game location or vendor booth can occasionally happen (and you'll be looking at a black screen for 5–10 seconds on scene exit as the fairground map rebuilds itself) so use of the mini-map will definitely save a lot of mouse clicks and time and is highly recommended. The area to explore is quite large and the "fog-of war" is a very nice touch.

The Fun Fair features beautiful artwork in some of the game locations and looked very polished. The music is sparse and haunting and compliments the artwork very nicely. Together they do a great job of setting the atmosphere of an ethereal fairground ready to be explored.

The Fun FairA rather glaring omission is the lack of a save feature. Why the developer neglected to implement a save feature when there is the distinct possibility of a player rage-quitting when the timer runs out in a mini-game (and you only needed one more duck!) is unknown. There are also a few bugs that became apparent when playing through the game upon first release. After visiting the King of Pancakes the second time and receiving the ugly sock painting, grab the carrot and exit the scene immediately (this will make sense in-game). If you do not you may face eternity having a one sided conversation with the King of Pancakes until you refresh and have to start all the way back at the beginning. There were also some issues with countdown timers in carnival games being erratic; this made the carnival games either impossibly fast or unfairly slow. The music, as sparse and pretty as it was could probably benefit from a mute button. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in part 2.

Incorporating elements from multiple genres, Part 1 of The Fun Fair definitely presents itself as a game that holds a lot of promise for upcoming parts in the series, especially if the series continues to be 100% clown free.

So far, I'm a little disappointed. The controls could be better. I'd really like it if you could use arrow keys to walk around instead of clicking 400 times to get anywhere.

Also, I have no idea how to play the "wheel of luck." I went in, put the coin in, hit play, and then nothing. My cursor changed to a hand, and the wheel came up, but no amount of clicking or dragging did anything, and I couldn't get out of the minigame, so I gave up and restarted the game. rrrr

I really dislike the controls, and the angled birds eye view angle gets a little disorientating at first. Other than that I cant really find the point to the game, is it just a bunch of minigames? because it looked like it would be more.

To play the wheel of luck:

Blumming ducks, and what's with the balloons?!

ottoman June 30, 2009 1:18 PM

I found a guy walking around who told me I had to succeed at all the games, then the door would open for me (?). He told me to find work at the pasta stand, and the pasta stand guy told me that someone else could help me plant a coin tree.

I found a bumper counter but I could not figure out the point of the bumper car game. I suspect a second person has to play with me. I also can't figure out the balloons!

My biggest qualm is that the game is very slow. It might just be my computer, but since there's no quality option I'm stuck with sluggish movements, which is certainly not helping me win the games!

Reply

you can get to the bottom right of the circus

there is a path through the trees on the island on the bottom

Reply

Thanks for the tip on the wheel of luck.

Anyone know how to

light the lamp? I got the lamp from romain, then filled it with oil from the trucks, but I can't find anything to light it with so I can use it to scare the ghost/

Get the lamp from Romain? I tried giving him lollipops but it would just make him talk normally.

@ottoman:

Maybe you don't have enough? He took 10 from me when I clicked on him, without the lollipops being equipped.

Reply

Vlad,

it's easy to find something to light it with if you are a real snoop around the trucks

I'm a little stuck right now... I have so many things that don;t make sense in my inventory lol

What about La barba papa (that should be called barbe a papa) ? Have you figured it out yet ?

Reply

You light the lamp

And what's up with the music? It's pretty, but it only lasts for a minute and then there's just a looooong silence.

Ugh...is it just me, or are the controls for a laptop absolutely horrible? I can't move my cursor around comfortably at all...I have a feeling I'm going to be missing out on some items. -_-

Also, what's up with the broken links for the other games?

Do you have to find everything in the Haunted House, or is it always just a dead end?

Nothing so far for me.

Anyone have any ideas about the haunted house? I've noticed that

when i move my mouse over the skeleton to the right's mouth in the room with the bathing skeleton it changes to a hand, like i can do something, but nothing happens.

Also, what IS up with the balloons? That's the only game i haven't gotten the second prize in. Is it just luck?

Reply
drakono June 30, 2009 2:30 PM

On the balloons:

I got it on my second try, just by using +3 every time. I got a score of 24, and got all the prizes.

i have been wandering around wondering what to do. How does the balloon game work? do you need to get a correct button sequence or something?

Reply

Does anyone know anything about the balloon-blowing? I can't figure it out at all!

Reply

For the balloons I just

clicked on 10 from start to finish and it gave me 30 points which was enough to get the trophy

Reply

For the balloons it doesn't matter what your score is, it is how many balloons out of the 10 that you don't pop. You need to get at least 8 to get all three items. The sequence as far as I can tell, is totally random.

Reply

Mulka and Drakono, I've searched almost every pixel, I can't get even a hand on the cursor.

Reply

I got 28 on the balloon game and only got a lollipop

Reply

@ mulka

It may just be different modes of difficulty. I'm playing on medium and when I got 31 I only got the second place prize. I got 31 by pressing seven over and over again until I was close enough to 30

Reply

To make candy-floss:

Get the wrench from in one of the trucks. Use it to get a bolt from the bumper car area. Put this on the the candy-floss machine. Then turn it on, and add sugar, which is the second item you get from Romain, and finally, use chopsticks(I forgot where this came from).

Reply
drakono June 30, 2009 2:47 PM

@mulka:

Yes, the list of scores and awards shows my high score is 24, and I have all three prizes. Strange that it's not working for you.

Reply

Tgame, I can assure you I got less than 8 and I got all three items ;)

How many for the ducks ? I must suck big time, I can only get 22 max... the game seems to jam on my laptop

Reply

One thing about the bumper cars,

If you push the empty car through the hole left by removing the grate and then follow it out, you can find a car behind the mini-game with markers and a star in it.

Reply

@ TGame

Nope, I got a 10 out of 10. unless there is a minimum score.

Reply

lol I forgot about the difficulty level... you're right, that must be why

Reply

the second set of 10 lollipops, that guy will trade you for a kilo of sugar.. it looks like its supposed to go into the candy floss machine, but nothing happens when i try

Reply

To those complaining about the controls:
You can click anywhere on the map and you will walk straight there. This saves you the 400 clicks to walk anywhere in the circus.

Reply
ollyw123 June 30, 2009 2:55 PM

please tell me this has a save feature

Reply

A truly horrifying game. Controls are slow and inaccurate. No instructions for any of the games. I got bored after only a few minutes.

Reply

It's gotta be the high score for balloons. I did all +1 for it and didn't pop a one. All I got was a lollipop.

Reply

I've won all six games (six trophies) so where is the "open door" that Romain (lettuce) speaks about? And where is this "passage necklace" that Hector wants?

Reply

I still am very confused about the balloon game, is it random, is there a pattern? Do the 10s always pop or is there a way to get them blown up?

Reply

I'm out of coins! I can't find any more and I'm pretty sure that JeJe is just a joke. :(

Reply

What do you do at cuddly toys?

I gave the rabbit the carrot, and Miky says "what do you want"?, but I can't figure out if I'm supposed to take something.

Reply
drakono June 30, 2009 3:30 PM

@blerg and benhere:

Give the crepe to Greg. Then go back to John Cout to get the ugly painting (I still don't know what it's used for) and the carrot. Give Miky's bunny the carrot, then give Miky the cotton candy. Click on the bear's eyes and nose. Now you can cross the bridge. That's as far as I got.

I am going as fast as I can and the max ducks I can get are 30. The game does seem to have occasional lag issues and I am doing this with a mouse. Finished at last! Might save people some time knowing that you dont need the third trophy for each of the games to get 'out' but they do contribute to your final score and ranking. I ended up with only 1 item in my trophy bag!

Reply

I finally finished! I'm the 11th person to complete it, according to the high scores

At the end,

I put the shrub on the the chair in one of the caravans, then added the crystal water, and gave necklace to the guy that appeared

@MizzBB,

the passage necklace is inside the bear, after clicking his eyes and nose, and then inserting the items from the games. You get the bear from Miky after you give him a carrot and candyfloss

I get only 1 point max, since the bad guys come so fast (~160 per minute) and I'm playing on easy?

Is this dependent on the computer speed?
Of course this is the last one that is missing.
Can't find the vial/water either - but that would be by the caravans across the bridge?

I think carnival point and clicks are my personal curse. This and Carnyville (also reviewed here) are two games I've had to stop playing for one reason: I click on something next to the game window and go to another page, forcing me to start over again. This time it was the "Register" button right on top of the EXIT button in the upper right corner. It kind of makes me want to cry. Deep breath... Deep breath...

Anyone have any ideas on the "wonder wheel"?

Reply
snowmoon June 30, 2009 10:06 PM

i thought this game was... okay overall. there were things that i liked, but things that i TOTALLY DISLIKED lol...

maybe it was something to do with me playing this late at night when i was super sleepy, because i didn't like the way the trucks and ghost scenes moved around when you're trying to explore the scene... almost made me sick lol...

and i didn't like how the sound can't be turned off! i liked the background sound, but the fact that it plays once, and pauses for several minutes before suddenly starting again, is totally irritating because i can't play my own songs w/o getting interrupted by the bg song! i think they should either allow us to turn it off, or play it constantly... (sry if there really is a button to turn the sound off and i missed it or sth.)

and i wish there were infinite number of coins! like. some of us just aren't as good as some games than others, and some of the games in there seem to be based on pure luck (like the balloon one for example), and if i really want to get all the trophies (just for the sake of it), i really need more coins!

and i think instructions/the logic in the game needs to be clearer? i spent AGES clicking on every random thing i could find trying to get the passage necklace, before i finally realised i was meant to

give the crepe to the pasta guy

i mean, i don't remember him asking me for food (can't he just cook his own pasta :P), and every time i tried talking to him, there was no mention of him wanting anything... so it really took me forever to find out what i needed to do and proceed in the game... and the pasta guy talked abt this jeje guy to get a money tree from? i dunno whether i missed it, but somehow i don't remember getting a money tree ever in the game... (the only plant was the bonsai, and again,

it was only by trial and error that i gave the shrub to the pasta guy... how was i supposed to know he likes shrubs? lol

so yea, i like the concept of having mini games, and i like the artwork, but some parts of the game get really frustrating to me... dunno if you all will agree or not :P

About the balloon game:

Each balloon has a random value assigned . To win, you must reach the necessary total points (24 on the easy level). Each click is a guess -- and the goal is to get the highest number of points without going over (too high means the balloon breaks).

If you choose 1 each time, your balloon will never break, but you will end up with only 10 points. A good strategy seems to be to keep guessing 10 until you have 20, then guess 7 until you get one right.

Or stick with 7s and once you get three right (21), switch to 3s. If you are on harder levels, the number is naturally higher.

Got nearly to the end and then it got buggy while I was

getting the apology from the pancake king

. The exit button did not work and neither did clicking any of the other items or people. Of course there is no autosave and there is NO WAY I'm playing this one again. Too bad.

Read the review.

Yeah, really easy to miss bug... and so late in the game! Must be frustrating.

My frustration was even worse!

I got all the way to the very end, having collected all items and trophies.

Then it froze (just like with the Pancake King) - in the caravan with Sophia!! I gave her the necklace, and then could no longer exit, see the map, etc., or get off that page.

Could somebody tell me what is supposed to happen after that. What is the ending? Did another door/gate/area open, or what?

There is no way I am playing it for the 6th time! I lost it twice by clicking on the banner by mistake, then encountered the freeze with the Pancake Man, and another time, all the games were running really fast, and were impossible. I suspect the games were running as Difficult Mode, although I was in Easy Mode with 100 coins. e.g. at the Wild West Shootout, in Easy I get approx 65 men, whereas I was getting 165 men and a score of 0. There were also far more squirrels and they were coming much faster than is usual in the Easy Mode. (I didn't carry on further).
Finally did it all SO carefully - only to be foiled at the very last scene - extremely annoying!!

There should definitely be a Save feature, in view of the length of time to play it fully.

Quite an interesting game, but there's lots that should have been fixed before release.

Arrgh! What the heck do you do on the stupid wheel of luck? I click and drag the post and the wheel spins, but nothing happens. It still shows the clenched hand like I'm still spinning. Which, if I had any control over where the cursor was going I guess I would just keep spinning. Except that the thing goes everywhere but where I want it to. How do you get the thing to finish the game?

So I keep trying to do the ghost train ride, and all I ever see is this one stupid ghost who just floats there and does nothing. I even offered him everything in my inventory (which is everything I've found both on the map and doing the games), and....nothing. I can't find any hints on here about this, or even any indication that anyone else had the same problem. Anyone know a solution?

I realy hate after spending one hour succeeding through the game, I click outside the game by accident: homepage, gone game. I've had this so often, really enoying. I won't be playing it all over again.

Is anyone else having problems with the text-entry panel when you're supposed to give the answer to the pasta guy? It won't let me enter anything. Using Firefox. :-/
