magnumopuschallenge.gifThe Codex of Alchemical Engineering: Magnum Opus Challenge - Yes, that's exactly what cerebral puzzler The Codex of Alchemical Engineering needed. A longer title. Anyway, there are fifteen new brain-teasers here, created by both the author of the original game and its fans. When Zach (the author) says that this expansion may destroy the minds of those who haven't finished the first game, do not take his words lightly.

And while 15 extra levels may not seem like much, these puzzles are extremely challenging and each one will likely take you hours to complete. We recommend you play some of Zach's other games in the Zachtronics series of games first before tackling this one. You may also want to go to your local university to get an engineering or computer science degree if these games appeal to you. :)

I worked my way through the first 5 Codex levels... I love this game! I'm really enjoying how the challenges have been mixed up a little since the last incarnation of this gem.

Anyway, here are my solutions for now.

I'm looking forward to Monday when I have time to work through the rest.

Oh no! More CoAE! My brain may indeed explode.

Reply

Whew! Finally done with Magnum Opus (started on Wednesday when I saw it in a comment on CoAE). On some of the levels, it was hard to see what had to be done. For example, in VI. Tychic Alloy,

10 atoms of Mercury are required, but only one can be grabbed every 2 cycles, and there's an 18-cycle limit in programming. The answer? Use programs that don't loop back until two or four times through.

Here's a couple of my favorite solutions:

Can someone help me? I'm not an engineer, but I'm pretty logical. I can't work out why this doesn't work beyond the first molecule:

Is there someone who can take a look and give me a hint for fixing it? THANKS!!

Sarah: The 'start script after' symbol actually uses a unit of time to process, so it counts like a wait symbol. It's only processed once. To get your one salt arm working, I removed a wait symbol from the start and put it at the end so the cycle would be sixteen beats after the "start after" symbol. It locks up later on on another arm, but I think it is the same "start after" symbol problem there too.

I had not noticed that about that symbol. Thanks! I'll try it again.

Thanks to the advice and a little bit of experimentation (and a belief that my design was sound) I have a cool little mechanism for the new CoAE Level 1:

Whew! Tychic alloy in 264 symbols, 118 moves. I borrowed the conveyor belt idea from Priha. There's actually some room for improvement if I built the string of molecules in the opposite order and therefore saved the double revolve before dropping on the finish area. Tough one!
