Weekday Escape

JessHow I want to spend my mornings: Eating brioche at a cafe in Paris. Sunning myself on a sugar-white sand beach in Hawaii. How I don't want to spend my mornings: Waking up, confused and alone, in a bare, The Cellfilthy cell, pandering to the whims of a madman in a desperate bid to regain my freedom. Happily for me, I am not the unfortunate protagonist/victim of an escape game. However! Spence, an American who finds himself embroiled in intrigue in Budapest after answering the call of a distant friend, is. For reasons beyond his comprehension, he has been confined and made to fight for his life. And now, he needs your help to escape The Cell.

Created by the Fox Network as a companion game to the Web series of the same name, The Cell is a lengthy, highly entertaining adventure through an elaborate dungeon complex. Our hero, Spence, must complete a series of increasingly bizarre and dangerous challenges as he ascends to the surface; your unknown captor has provided all that you need, but you'll need to use your wits and risk your hide to overcome his tests. In theme and atmosphere the game reminds me quite a bit of the Saw series of movies; even the sinister voice of Spence's malevolent kidnapper (on the cell phone from which he gives you his orders) is the same. Nothing wrong with that, though. The same thing that makes the movies fun—the complex, potentially fatal game-playing—is also the reason that The Cell is so enjoyable.

As befits a game commissioned by a major television network, The Cell is quite good-looking and professionally rendered. The third-person visuals suggest the view from a security camera; perhaps, even while playing the hero, you are assuming the perspective of the villain? The interface is clean, simple and intuitive, and a save feature is thoughtfully provided. Admittedly, the game is somewhat easy. The puzzles are mainly logical and not terribly complex, and if you get stuck all you have to do is access the comprehensive hint system by pressing the "help" button. Of course, you choose how much assistance to be provided with. There is quite a bit of backtracking necessary to completing the game (the facility is comprised of three levels connected by elevators, and you'll often find yourself running back and forth between them), but that's not such a hassle. On the whole, the game scores pretty low on the frustration scale.

The game does require registration, but receiving emails from the website is optional. So go ahead and enjoy!

I played this a couple of days ago, and I thought it was very good. It's quite easy, but the spooky "saw"-like atmosphere, and the fact that you can't die and have to start all over again, makes up for it. Waiting for sequel!

I keep getting "Transaction failed due to an error in the connection to the server" whenever I try to create a new player using my Gmail.com account, but not on other email sites. Is that a bug or something?

EMDF:

Sounds like it is trying to validate that the e-mail is valid. SMTP can also query that a valid e-mail address exists, and it's possible that gmail doesn't allow this (to stop spammers from scanning for address or something). Just a guess.

Hmm... pretty straightforward most of the way. But I'm stuck.

How do you get the mouse? I imagine I'll need the mouse to trip the 2nd laser by running along the pipeline. But I can't catch the darn thing. I have only a plastic cup filled with water in my inventory. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Didnt like how i'd figured out what to do and was on the way to do it,then a window pops up telling me what to do anyway....

Yeah, I typed my exact email (@gmail.com) three times when I first posted, and three times now with no luck. I even tried "@www.gmail.com" and "@mail.google.com", and they still didn't work. I guess it's something with my email. I used Firefox 2.0.0.17 and Internet Explorer 7.0.6001.18000, neither of which worked. I ended up using an anonymous spam email to play the game, and deleting the registration email.

Gmail worked just fine, but this game was so not worth registering for. It's too short. -.-

I will admit it took me a couple dozen tries at the end, trying to find the exit. I will also admit to hitting the Help button a few times. But, really, registering for this?

I played this game a few days ago, and so I must say that the Saw part of the review made me happy. I am glad I was not the only one to think of Saw when playing this game, and also to see the good sides of being inspired by Saw being mentioned, being the whole mind twist part.

Unfortunately the Saw resemblance is also its weakness, as it seems like this game like many others I've seen, are trying to copy the whole Saw theme.

But as a game in itself, it is fun to play, looks good, and have some nice puzzles.

Reply

It won't allow me to use my email address either, apparently it doesn't like .info domains...

Very good game. Easy enough to get without help, and the creepy atmosphere was great, especially with such good graphics.

I remember hearing about this Cell.tv somewhere, and I'm certainly not going to miss any episode!

I must be stupid because I am stuck already and only in the corridor. I have a screwdriver, but can't move boxes or anything. Can't tell if I am angry at the game or at myself for not thinking of what will end up being easy.

Reply

@guest

When you are at the corridor, go right to the boxes and pick up the plastic cup
go left, click the next door left to the cell door and enter maintance room
at the shelf right side you will find at the top an empty oilcan
in the middle is a toolbox - click it and take out the isolation tape
Click the isolation tape above the door at the red sensor
open the box right next to the door and get out the fuse
Go back to your cell and fill the plastic cup at the sink with water and the oilcan at the floor with oil
Go back on the corridor and walk left

When you click the Help-Button at the right upper corner, it will give you a hint about what you need or have to do next

Greetings Kayleigh

Awesome presentation, but the concept was way too close to a "Saw" ripoff, and the gameplay was way too short. Why did they even want you to register?

They're...not speaking English in that game, right? Or any real language? I keep hearing the word "disfigured" from the creepy guy who calls me on the phone -- but mostly everyone sounds like The Exorcist by way of the grown-ups in Charlie Brown cartoons.

Oh: and why the heck am I wandering around a filthy warehouse in my bare feet?!?

Paradoxically, there's something that kinda amuses me in these games sometimes. No matter how dire the situation the characters are in, they never want to put their hands in some dirty water or anything like that xD

I mean come on ! You've been drugged, kidnapped and locked in a cell, and your main concern is that you don't want to get your hands dirty ?

Reply

Oh gosh, yes!! I was also thinking of Saw when I played this game! Oh gosh. It never fails to send chills along my spine! Good game!

I liked this one. Good graphics, easy enough but not too much. I also liked the built-in help.

Did I find a bug?
I drank 3 doses and the help says to search the rooms thoroughly. I did, but nothing changes.

The walkthrough says I should find a box on the bed to choose the 4th dose but there is no box there. Oh dear.

Any suggestions?

Wow. This game is good and the graphics are brilliant, but it's very tough!

I'm stuck

@xRomain

You must use the tape on the red sensor above the door so the door stays open, not on the fuse box itself

I find it a little weird that this game is tagged as "kidsafe". I realize that there is nothing horrendous in the game, but there IS a disembowled corpse, and that monster thing is pretty creepy. I mean, I'm not going to lie, the game is kinda spooky.

I'm just mentioning this because the tag "kidsafe" sparks in me the kind of game that is seriously not questionable in the least bit. I just worry that there might be some upset parents of younger children, if they allow them to play this without checking, because of the tag.

Reply

Thanks for your concern, Chelsea. I've changed the tags for this one. Cheers!

was anyone able to watch the webisodes on the website? whenever I click on one it says its "not available at my your location." are americans not allowed to watch it?

Reply

Not a bad escape game. I'd probably prefer it if the Hint system wouldn't automatically stop the game after you've been plugging away for awhile and give you the hint. Maybe if just the option came up, but not with it right there in front of you.

Also, I wasn't too impressed with (what I hope was) the translation of the game. Not that there were huge, glaringly bad examples of mangled English in the text, but there are a plenty of small misuses of tense and grammar in there. It wouldn't really stand out in your standard independently-made escape game, but with such a polished presentation here, phrases like "The control panel has power supply" or "It's locked with key" don't really belong. In particular, I found "You'll find a box with four keys in your cell. Only one of is good" (which references a box with four vials) to be just plain sloppy proofreading. It doesn't put a major damper on the gameplay, but it's there, and doesn't need to be, particularly since this is brought to us by a major television network.

So.. why can't I throw the rubber ball to trip the sensor? It's a bit of a pet peeve of mind when other options to escape, no matter how logical they seem, can not be carried out. Erg. Still an OK game.

Reply

Stylistically, just extraordinary. The puzzles seem to be pretty trivial so far, at least by the standards we're used to finding in the other escape games on JIG.
Did anyone else have their saved info summarily deleted? Pretty frustrating.

p.s. try spoilers, people!

The bomb:
Open the metallic box, when you zoom in on the bomb, you must move around the rings so that the lines cross all the red dots, turning them green

The rings don't have to toch the dots, just put them so, that all the dots turn green by the lines who are in the near of the dots ;)
