AdamCTake Something Literally 2Every now and then, I like to dust off the ol' grey cells with a more challenging mental contortion. You know—when slaughtering hoards of zombies or jumping from platform to floating platform becomes too monotonous (and young as I am, I can still appreciate just how ridiculous that statement sounds). Sometimes, I just have to give colorful characters and gripping storytelling a break and get down to some real problem solving. Few games can truly test the fortitude of my formidable problem-solving capabilities, which border on Einsteinian. Haha, I'm kidding, you'll probably beat this next game way faster than I did.

Following the original, Take Something Literally 2, by Benoit Freslon, continues in the footsteps of its predecessor, delivering 25 mind-churning, browser-busting puzzles. The setup is pretty straightforward; puzzles are arranged in rows of increasing difficulty. One star means the puzzle is a little annoying. Two stars will give you a headache. Three stars... well, you can extrapolate from there. Each puzzle presents you with a separate screen and a title which will be the key to figuring out how to solve the puzzle. And believe me, this can get pretty tricky, so you may be tempted to get some outside help. But hey, you're not a cheater, right? Walkthroughs are for wussies! (Note: Not actually for wussies!) In case you get stuck but don't want to get beaten up by your fellow gamers for being a dirty cheater, just look for the light bulbs hidden throughout the levels. One bulb will earn you one tip on a level, though sometimes these hints are almost as enigmatic as the puzzles themselves. Gee, thanks, Benoit! These little light bulbs are well-hidden, enough so that finding each one adds another level of satisfying challenge.

Analysis: What can I say? Take Something Literally 2 lives up to its title and often requires you to think a little harder than you might on your lunch break. I've touted the value of out-of-the-box thinking before, but it's particularly useful with the minimalistic presentation style and the various forms of solution inputs, like clicking, typing something in or reaching a destination. Some of the solutions become apparent after a minute or two, while others are (sometimes MUCH) more obtuse. In fact, one of the problems that plagues these kind of puzzle games is that you are often trying to do what the designer thought made sense at the time. The problem, of course, lies in the fact that you may not make the same mental connection between the title and the solution that the designer did during beta testing. Take Something Literally dodges this bullet narrowly because of its relatively high accessibility, but one or two puzzles require a certain amount of familiarity with the designer's work. If you played the original, though, you will be used to this sort of thing.

The whole appeal of the TSL series is the challenge. It is not found in the monochromatic presentation or the canned "reward" for each puzzle solved. You will, however, experience some "ah-HAH!" moments, particularly when... well, I hesitate to say too much, lest I be flayed for spoiling. So just go give it a shot, okay? The reward for each puzzle may be a little... 3 years ago, but we all know the REAL satisfaction that comes from this type of game is knowing you totally didn't use that walkthrough or ask anyone for help in the comments, right?

Right, guys?

Sorry, but I quit after the 4th level started. This game is way too much work. Email for a password to complete a level? Send a file to complete a level?

Meh. I'm here for mindless fun. That almost felt like work.

OK STUCK ON FIRST LEVEL. any ideas?

Haven't played enough of it to form an opinion yet, but I'd just like to say that the sound effects from Zelda (A Link to the Past, I think) are making me really nostalgic right now.

Hey, just wanted to share

Your links hide the address bar which makes one of the levels unsolvable (essentially).

Reply

I think I was more interested until level 3; I'm not especially enthusiastic about giving them my email address.

Reply

I'm 90% sure I'm doing level 4 correctly, but I think it's not working because of character encoding or line-break codes since I'm on linux.

I created a text file called 'new text file.txt' and put 'hello' in the body, then attached it. But it just tells me "Wrong password". Am I missing something?

Reply

Ah, I just watched the walkthrough... I don't see a Download button or a password box at all.

I need help on level 24, without a webcam

I've tried uploading images of varying shades of pink, but it doesn't seem to like it.

Reply
crashlanding June 8, 2010 8:55 PM

Alot of these puzzles don't seem to like macs :/
for example:

level 1: clicks outside of the game simply do not register, making it impossible
level 4: same problem as keith, despite imitating what happened in the walkthrough.

aside from those two, I managed to do the rest. Not entirely sure about lv 24, as I had the same problem as Mystify

for some reason, it just gave me a complete if I hit "access my webcam" and then denied access to my webcam. This was after uploading a pink picture, though. not a clue whether that affected it.

Walkthrough for first four levels:
I only played to this point before it all felt too hard. Maybe someone with tenacity and smarts can play some more and write a walkthrough. I'd be really interested in one for the rest of the game...

Simon Says

Click where the arrows are pointing, first outside the game then inside. You'll need to click a few times.

Don't Release

When you first click in this level, hold the mouse button down until the LoL Cat appears.

Send an email to [email protected]. A reply will come through almost immediately, with an assurance that your email address will not be used for anything, nor will you receive any email from Benoit. The password you receive is:

Create a new text document with just the word:

Wow--talk about failing badly. The person doing this does know that some features like Zoom aren't available in some Flash setups, right? (Mine seems to be inconsistant--sometimes I get Zoom in the context menu, other times, like when trying to play this game, I get just an option for 'settings'. I think it depends on which version of Flash is called for--it seems like if the file itself is for an older Flash version it'll work fine, but if it's for Flash 10 it'll only give the settings menu). Not to mention the puzzles depending on external features--such as requiring e-mail or files are a bad idea in general. :-/

I think I've figured out what I can for now. Walkthrough for 21 (or 22) of the 25 levels. But first, remember to notice the level's button-icon and read the level title. Those are often big hints.

1.

Keep clicking on the center until you win.

2.

When you click on the icon for this level, keep your mouse button held down. Just a couple seconds does it.

3.

Send an email to the email address given.
The email address is:

You can click on the white-on-white link or highlight it to find that the address is [email protected]

Then:

Watch your inbox for a quick reply.

For me (and everyone?), the password is

hello world

Not 4:

Reported to be easy on Windows, but I can't get it to work on Linux.

5.

This may or may not be Wingdings or a similar font. The easy way to read it is to:

select the text, copy, and paste into a text editor.

For me (and everyone?), the password is

crazy

6.

You sure you need a hint? These trick games always have one of these.

Right-click, then select [Here] from the popup menu.

7.

Similar to #6.

Right-click and select the Flash 'Play' option.

Not 8:

The Flash 'Zoom In' button is disabled for me (Linux Firefox). I'm not going to go looking for a Flash decompiler.

9.

Turn the crank.

Recall that there was a heart in a cage in the opening credits/intro.

Open the game in a second window/tab, or reload it, and click the now freed heart on the intro screen.

10.

Unless you can count really fast or have a photographic memory, use the title's hint. Take a screenshot while the cameras are visible, and enter the answer (exact number varies).

11.

What would you have if you COULD beat the timer?

Ignore the puzzle. Exit the level before the timer runs out.

12.

Click and hold on the 'Keep holding' button. And really do keep holding. The pointer will move opposite your mouse motion. Navigate the maze to the smiley, then release the mouse button.

13.

The title is the big hint. To get started:

As of this writing, the #2 google hit for "the key of my he4rt" (with quotes) is http://www.benoitfreslon.com/my-games/the-key-of-my-he4rt/ ... which links to http://armorgames.com/play/710/the-key-to-my-he4rt .

So:

In your http://armorgames.com/play/710/the-key-to-my-he4rt window, click the key. In your "Take Something Literally 2" window level 13, click the heart.

14. No clue.
15.

Be either the host or the guest of a successful "party". To host:

click the Invite button. You get a URL ending in .../go_to_party.php?door_code=###### . Note the URL and/or just the number at the end.

To be a guest:

Visit the host's full URL, OR click Go in the game's level 15 and just type in the "door code" number.

A party is a success if:

At least two different IP addresses attend. (Basically, two computers, but computers in the same residential home might not count.)

If your friends are offline or you have no friends, you can try something like proxify.com

16.

Wave the net around some, give up and go back to the menu.

Continue playing OTHER levels, and you'll occasionally see butterflies fly by.

When you spot one, quickly go back to the menu and to level 16 so your pointer turns into the net. Then catch that butterfly.

17.

Solved by keyboard.

Press TAB, TAB, TAB, ENTER.

18.

The puzzle, when assembled, is

An arrow pointing up at the level's title, 'Useless puzzle'. Oops.

There's also a 'Show!' button

which opens a link ending in ...#password=here . That's more hint than the puzzle.

The password is

'here'. After all, it does say 'Type the password here'.

19.

If you match the notes you hear to the letters shown on the piano keyboard and put spaces where there are rests, the tune spells:

ONE TWO TWO THREE. The password is:

1223

20.

Level 20 is not complete all by itself.

The numbers in the 'equation' refer to level numbers.

The backgrounds of levels 3, 20, and 16 combine to form an image similar to http://www.frenblog.com/illusion/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/rabbit-duck-illusion.gif

The two animals to be seen are

'rabbit' and 'duck'. Type these in separately. And sadly, the game does not accept 'bunny'.

21.

Click Start. Move slowly, because the pointer will now move much faster than usual. Get through the maze without bumping a wall to click on the smiley.

22.

Yes, the figure on the left is *your* resolution.

Change your screen resolution so the two images match. The correct resolution is

800x600

On Linux/Firefox, I had to

restart the browser!

23.

Just drag the pacifier onto the baby, then the shoes onto the adult, then the cane onto the elderly person. It just takes a wait of around 80 minutes total.

Or maybe you could change your computer's clock.

24.

Translated from French, the title is "I see the life in pink". I held a bright pink piece of paper in front of my webcam. Others have reported frustration trying to upload images instead....

25. No clue.

for 24 without a webcam:

Just take a screenshot, and cut out a spot of the pink color. Copy and paste it in the top left corner and keep making it bigger or cut the picture down in size. Just make sure the whole thing is that color and then save it and upload it.

Reply
BrahManty June 8, 2010 11:30 PM

Sorry about posting that solution after everyone else did, I didn't refresh for a while so I didn't see them :o

But 21 is literally impossible for me. My mouse just immediately flies off into a wall without me even moving it. It's the only one I have left to get, wish I could see the last video :\

Reply

I got very into this game(solving more than half the levels) before hitting the comments section here for help on level 4. Despite doing exactly what the walkthrough says,

the game won't accept my hello.txt file, containing only hello in the body. I also tried sending a file named just hello as the walkthrough technically stated(not hello.txt, just hello with no extension), and that didn't work either.

I can only assume it's a fault of my operating system(ubuntu hardy heron), and how the text file is coded. Very disappointing...I feel as if the time I spent was wasted because I can't win the game. It seems that other people running linux and mac are having similar difficulties. You should add a warning to the review about that level, or at least remove the macwinlinux tag, since it seems that the game may only work under certain operating systems.

Reply

Uggh. Why do these games always fall from "clever riddles" to "how well do you know your computer?" I understand that the creators want to work with the medium, but really, between games like notpr0n requiring that you Photoshop multiple background layers or whatnot to screwing around with your webcam on this one... it's really not accessible, or particularly clever, to anyone who ISN'T a game designer. [/peeve]

That being said, it seems cute and well made, if not well thought out.

Reply

For level 15, open up the link in a proxy. :)

Reply

For level 24 with webcam on:

First, it seems to want you to show it a certain amount of pink -- enough to fill up that circle. Second, I cheated and held up a pink piece of paper.

Took about 2 seconds to pass the level this way.

I can't get into the party, though. My wife and I are using 2 machines on one home network and we both get the same invite codes. Is the code, perhaps, a hit counter?

Reply

EDIT: Yeah, it seems to be a hit counter. Or just a unique number counter.

I took the code it generated for me and used it to get my wife in to the party, then I added one to it and got myself in that way. When she tried to invite me, it gave her the same code *I* gave her. Which makes me think it's counting based on IP address. Or partial IP address, anyway.

damn, the reward videos are hilarious.

A warning for Level 23, for people who have to do it "the long way" because they can't adjust their system clocks:

You have to actually leave the game open for the entirety of the level if you're going to finish it in real-time. I gave the baby the pacifier, then closed the level, did other things, came back and gave the man his shoes, closed the level again, finished the rest of the game, and came back to give the old man his cane--and did not get a level-complete dancing kitty. Furthermore, unless you can adjust your system clock, closing the level after the baby leaves baby-phase renders the level unwinnable, so far as I know--unless, after a much longer period of time, the man dies and the level resets. He was still alive at 70 minutes/years.

Yeah, too much emailing, sending files, that kind of crap. It's almost like an office sim. Points for keyboard cat, tho.

Reply

@Mystify: Thanks for the tip! I finished that one, but I can't do the aging one.

You actually need to change your system time to do it. Waiting it out does not work.

Apparently, if you finish on another date the game gets all buggy.

This is how I solved the party level:

Have level 15 open in one window, and open up another window with the game, and go to level 15 in that window as well. Now press the Invite button in the first window, and the Join button in the second, then put in the code into the second window. That's how I got through that level, even though I was only at one computer.

This game's creator seems a little uncertain of what "literal" means.

You all know that for the party, you when you get your code, enter the code 1 greater than the one you got, e.g. 10000 type in 10001

Some of them just dont' work. For example: tiny text. I can zoom in my browser all i want and get very blurry pixels.

The games keeps crashing at level 23 for me, whenever i

adjust my computer clock. the person changes, but the games just hangs and i couldn't pick up the objects.

Its kind of disappointing, i was so looking forward to this game. There's just too many external elements and those vary between different os and browsers. It would have been better if there were less external elements.

there is something i heard for number 25

1.open up level 25
2. open the original take something literally(#1) in a new window
3. get to the candle puzzle in the original
4. the ink should light up to see things better

Oh, and if i had a username, it would be guharfuh

number 13!

I. Do. Not. Understand. How. To. Get. The. Key. To. My. Game. Tab!!!!

I read the walkthrough! Make a new tab, open the armor link page, click the key, click the game tab, click the heart. okay, okay, I got the click the key thing, and so the key is following me in its window, but I can't seem to get the key to my original game tab to solve the game! any help?

SepiaPhotos you may

search for key to my he4rt, click the link to armor games. Then INSTEAD of clicking the picture of the key right away, click the button below it saying play Take Something Literally 2. A tab will automatically pop up. Then, you choose level 13 in the new tab.Look back at the "key" tab and click the key. Click the new Take Something game tab...and then move your mouse to the keyhole. It worked for me!

At first I was like "oh yay! A nice little puzzle game to keep me occupied for 15 minutes!" No. -_- I do not want to send you an email, create files, google things, invite my friends, and take screenshots all to just complete a level.

Reply

You dont need to bother other people in #15, just use some internet anonymizer, which will hide your IP and the game won't recognize you :), e.g.: http://anonymouse.org/ :) have fun

i just moved my finger back and forth close to the camera for level 24

Just add one or two to your number for 15 and bingo!

Okay, this is going to be HARD!!! THINGS WILL MESS UP!!! I actually DO NOT suggest attempting this game with something earlier than an '07 PC. And AdamC?

I cheated. I went on a website that has the youtube walkthrough with the game. It opened in a smaller but separate window and I just played it until the question I was on, got the info, paused it, sovled the puzzle, and moved on. Pathetic, I know.

I enjoyed the cat that told you you either completed the level or failed. It was cute ;). Also, every 5 levels you complete there is a present which is actually a video clip of, I think, Benoit, or someone else. I don't speak french, so I had no idea what they were saying that wasn't subtitled.

While these vids are some pretty funny material, they are a HUGE temporary download along with the game itself. You just CAN'T use an older computer and expect it to work. I dunno what they have in France, but it must be more advanced then American stuff. Sorry Apple.

The game itself is argueably even more challenging than the last one. Like in the review, look for the light bulbs (if you don't want to cheat like me).

As I said, there is a complete walkthrough on youtube, and for level three, if you dont feel secure about giving someone/thing your email, the password is...

hello world

(okay I hope I did the spoiler right). Ask me (for now, "Muse") for any help! ;) Good luck!

I can't get trough level 21. I did reduce my mouse speed, but it's sttil too hard.Isn't there another way of doing it?

For those of you with macs having problems with level 4.

Open textedit, write "hello" (minus quotes). Go to format menu click make plain text, go to save as, choose western-windows-latin-1 for format. save and upload.
It's a shame it's this complicated - the developer should have written it better,

for those in linux

not sure how to do it exactly, but you need to use gedit or similar to save in western windows ISO format instead of UTF. Complicated I know.

For 24

Upload a pic of a rose look at last word in french

Reply

If you're on Linux or Mac OS X (or any other UNIX-like system) level 4 might not work because some text editors append LF to the last line. Try using a hex editor to type only hello, or use some editor like gedit.

Haha! Hint to 25: Remember Take Something Literally 1? Wasn't there something on that game that might help??

Open up the Take Something Literally 1 in another browser, and go to the level that had a candle on it!

I don't really like many games like this. This "game" seems more like a phycological experiment to see how far the average Joe will go to win some game they found searching for cat names on google...

Reply

BTW, a way on level 8 would be to

Using a digital camera, take a picture of the monitor. Then just zoom in on the camera to finish it

For those who dont have a camera, the password is Microscopic

Reply

Easiest way to beat level 22:

Go back to level 6.
Click on mouse, then exit to main menu.
Go to level 22 and cat does same thing as he does in level 14.
Thats what the tip means by something missing next to your keyboard: theres no mouse on the keyboards in that level

Reply

another thing:
for those who leave their party number on forums or blogs, unless you keep the game open, it wont work because you get a new code each time you play it.
Where are the lights?
I got 22/25.

Reply

On 12 it helps if you turn your mouse upside down then move it normally

Reply

For the party one remember your number, exit the level, go back on it, click go, type your number with bell after it eg 645743bell and then click the picture of the bell

For lvl 24, show the webcam your tongue. Worked for me :)

Breeze Currie May 23, 2011 9:35 PM

LEVEL 24!!!!!
go to paint, make a completely pink box, save. Go to game level, click level, click that you have no camera, go to your pictures when the file opens and click on the completely pink pic. That's all :)
