Last week during Will Wright's Spore demo at GDC, he asked everyone to refrain from taking any pictures. At first, it struck me as odd that he would say such a thing since I had been snapping photos during the entire conference when there was anything noteworthy to see. However, the no photography announcement came before he admitted that the real "future of content" was going to be a demo of his new sim. Still, I put my camera back in my bag and wished to this day I hadn't listened.

Now photos from that same presentation are beginning to surface, and Jesper Juul has several up on his blog for perusal.

Elsewhere on the Web, GameSpy has a very thorough article up on Will's talk. There is also an excellent recount of the presentation from notes taken by Don Hopkins at the event.

Hey I just read about spore at GameSpy and i have to say it excited me, it's just the kind of thing i like, messing about with bits. Not entirely sure what the purpose of this comment is but I hope this gets released in one form or another. It'd be a great thing to play about with.

Also GameSpy have a huge amouunt of coverage of the GDC, which they are still adding to each day:

I dont think this has links to all their articles on the GDC, there are some on the front page, maybe this page hasn't been updated fully yet.

Gamasutra has posted some good coverage of this as well: http://www.gamasutra.com/gdc2005/features/20050315/postcard-diamante.htm

What a fantastic project. I have often wondered what would happen when the demo sceners started making it into the game industry, but this is not what I expected.

As an aside, I am not sure I feel good about the images being sent around. Will Wright was kind enough to share this with the development community before the more carefully controlled spin environment of E3 (where it is really hard for developers to get any information) and obviously didn't want low quality pre-alpha pictures leaked around. Seems it would be best if people voluntarily respected those wishes, rather than waiting for EA to send cease and desist letters.

It will be interesting to see whether EA does indeed send any cease and desist letters, my guess is they won't. EA is no doubt pleased with the excellent reception the game received at GDC, and the subsequent buzz being generated by the press and the development communities.

i think they should the game for ds it would be just like pc version

They should the game? What? Also, it's pretty impossible for any huge PC game to be 'just like' a handheld version. I think it should use the same 'sharing' system. That would be kool. You could use the creatures your friend made on his DS on your cell phone or something. (I've heard cell phone versions mentioned.)
