DanTheArcher Splitter 2Some of you casual gamers may recall a nifty little puzzler from Eugene Karataev in 2008. You may also remember cleaving wooden shapes with a carpenter's finesse, and perhaps you faintly recollect escorting a grinning little fellow across gauntlets of blocks and bricks. If you're really unfortunate, you'll remember the unsettling main menu graphic, where that same little fellow watched your cursor, dagger in hand, as he smiled from ear to ear. Hey, don't feel bad. That's what I remembered.

Karataev is at it again in Splitter 2, the sequel to his fiendishly addictive physics puzzler from yesteryear. The basic premise remains unchanged: your charge, a yellow smiley face with eyes eerily glued to your mouse, must make its way to the exit circle in each level one way or another. All you've got are whatever contraptions are lying around the level, your wits, and a cursor that can slice right through solid wood like it was string cheese. 32 mind-bending levels await your dicing prowess, and what's more, Karataev has graciously included a robust level editor this time around, allowing those with Casual Collective profiles to engineer their own obstacle courses.

Much of the magic that accompanied the original Splitter returns, such as the elegant simplicity of the level design and the fluidity of the animation. The game's hypnotic reset also makes a comeback; there's something oddly entertaining about watching your failed attempt piece itself back together, like watching a building explode in reverse. While some of the puzzles seem to rely a little more on timing, nailing that perfect angle on your cut, or sheer dumb luck, the vast majority are genuine brain-teasers that ought to stir up more than a couple of neurons.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

WALKTHROUGH:

Level 1:

Cut the wood just to the left of the rightmost "brick circle"

Level 2:

Cut the string

Level 3:

Make a vertical cut just to the left of the top most anchor

Level 4:

Think about cutting the string just before the ball hits the stick

Level 5:

Make horizontal cuts on the big wooden shape so that wood falls and more or less fills the hole for the ball to roll over

Level 6:

Make vertical cuts to the protruding wood, the wheel will then move the stick up

Level 7:

Make a vertical cut to the left of the leftmost anchor (detach the wood from the anchors, the ball will fall down)

Level 8:

Make a horizontal cut across the backwards "C". DO NOT CUT THE STRING. The top part of the wood will fall down below the brick. Cut the string connecting the gear and the wood. As the ball swings over, cut the string connecting the ball and the wood.

Level 9:

Cut the "+" away from the square (make the cut from bottom right to upper left. The "+" will turn, but get caught on the bottom. Cut away at the "+" so that it turns until the ball falls into the goal

Level 10:

Make vertical cuts to disconnect the right and left anchors.

Level 11:

Cut the leftmost string. Cut the skinny section of wood blocking the ball from falling into the goal. Once it falls, cut away at it again to allow the ball to finish falling.

Level 12:

This is a little tricky. Start the cut at the left side of the wood, just where the brick ends. Cut up, to the right, almost to the corner. Make a similar cut again. If you're lucky, the ball will fall and roll into the goal.

Level 13:

Cut the lower "F" at the base, cutting away a "C" shape. The upper "F" will fling the "C" at the ball, and the ball will roll to the goal.

Level 14:

Make a vertical cut just to the right of the left anchor. The wood will fling the ball to the goal.

Level 15:

Be quick! Cut away the left part of the heart AND all of the strings attached to the ball.

Level 16:

Cut away the section that is (at the start) on the top left. It will slide down the bottom piece, hit the ball, and the ball swings to the goal.

Level 17:

Cut away the protruding skinny piece of wood, just above the triangle, from bottom left to upper right. The piece will slide onto the balance. Cut the piece in half, tipping the scales.

Level 18:

Wait for the ball to roll over to the right side of the brick. Cut from the right side of the brick to the lower right corner of the hunk of wood. If you do it right, the bottom will make a ramp for the ball, which will roll down the turning piece and into the goal.

Level 19:

Make a horizontal cut at the little bump of wood just to the right of the ball. Make a cut a little to the right of the left anchor, from lower right to upper left. Ball is tipped into goal.

Level 20:

At the right of the screen, there is a tiny ramp, going up to the goal. Cut from lower left to upper right at the ramp, so that the tip of it slides off. Cut away a tiny piece of wood, just under the ball. If you do it right, the ball will roll into the goal. If not, try cutting away the upper tip of the fan, which should jiggle the ball into the goal.

Level 21:

Cut the upper left wood square, from outside corner to outside corner. The X will roll across the brick and push the ball to the goal.

Level 22:

Cut out a triangle of the rectangle's top left area. One vertex is the corner, one is above the anchor, and the other is to the left of the ball. Ball is pushed over the brick, into the goal.

Level 23:

Cut away the rope so that it forms an "S" shape. That is, only cut the tiny vertical pieces of string. The bottom row, cut from the left edge to the right, leaving one on the right. Do the opposite on the row above. Ball swings into goal.

Level 24:

Cut from the top left corner of the wood all the way to the right. The line should end up being just below the top third of wood in the middle column. The ball should fall to the right. If not, try again. When you get it, cut away the remaining wood, the ball falls into the goal.

Level 25:

Cut away the pillar of wood, from the bottom, in little sections, so that the wood falls into the first hole. It might take a few tries, but the ball should bounce on the wood, over the second hole, and into the goal.

Level 26:

This is a little tricky. Make a horizontal cut so that just a smidge of the wider part is left connected to the bottom. Now, make another horizontal cut just above the top most, horizontal grid line (only counting the major grid lines). The wood will swat that tiny piece you cut off at the ball, and the ball rolls into the hole. Yay!

Level 27:

Cut the string as the ball swings to the right. When the ball falls onto the lower platform and is almost over the goal, cut away the left anchor, allowing the ball to fall into the goal.

Level 28:

Just wait. Yay!

Level 29:

Wait for all of the circles to fall out of the spinning wood. Now, cut away The bottom piece of the spiral, so that it covers the left hole. Now cut the string. Yay!

Level 30:

Cut an X into the square. That is, cut from just above the lower left anchor, up to the left of the top right anchor (this will require some adjusting, I've had the best luck if it's not right at the corner). Now cut from below the top left pin, down, ABOVE the bottom right pin. A ramp falls out! Make another cut (identical to what you juts did, except BELOW the pin). Some wood should swing the ball into the goal. It might take another cut to free up the swing. With some adjustments, you should get it. :)

Level 31:

This is the last tricky one, I promise. Cut away the top left corner of the right stick. As the stick swings, cut off the bottom. This part should (takes a few tries) push the ball slightly to the left. After you cut off the flying piece, quickly cut off the top right corner of the left stick, which should swat the ball into the goal. It's not TOO bad.

Level 32:

Yay! The end! Just make a vertical cut across the screen, at about the left and right part of the "H" 's "bridge". The ball should fall right to the goal. :)

This reminds me a bit of Icebreaker.

Liking the level skip. :D

I like the icebreaker series better than the splitter series. I do love the level skip though

I remember one of the earlier games I saw on this site was splitter. The main menu scared me. It would have been nice ( as well as creepy ) to see the creepy menu back though.

Reply

The original splitter was better. It had better music and better puzzles.

I liked the original better. Some of the levels I'm solving just from random slashing and dumb luck. I especially dislike the ones which don't give you time to plan, i.e. the ball is in motion at the beginning of the level.

Reply

SPLITTER 2! YES! FINALLY! :D I'm stuck on level 17. :L

Reply

Luke: level 17:

you only need one cut.

slice slightly pointed to the upper-right about halfway between the two bricks (sending the narrow section onto the ramp, teetering it the other way)

i can't seem to do 30 or 31...any help?

Stuck on level 31. ARRRRGGGGHH!

Still can't beat the icebreaker series.

Most levels can be solved with below-par cuts .

I am so stuck on level 30..

I've made a ramp going up to the target by cutting a triangle in the left side of the square. Then I cut a long thin wedge hanging off the bottom left corner which swings round and hits the ball left towards the ramp and target.. but there just isn't enough force to get it up the ramp and I can't see any other way of doing it!

..help please? D;

Reply

Never mind, finally got it. Nice game.

Reply

Got 30.
You're starting with the right idea, Niphette, except...

...for the swinging piece, instead of making it thin, give it some weight so that it transfers more momentum to the ball.

Reply
niphette July 27, 2009 3:17 PM

Finally did it! Now onto 31. :D

Reply
SkfyS Day July 27, 2009 3:25 PM

.
Lvl 30

cut a triangle out from the middle of the square with two cuts, so that the triangle slides to the left and park under the target as a ramp.

The rest should stay in place, with one part hanging on the top two nails and another hanging on the lower nails.

Then, cut once on the lower part, separate it from the bottom-right nail so that it is only attached to the bottom-left nail. This part will swing like a pendulum and hit the ball, which will go left up the ramp. Score.

Lvl 31

A pure luck solution.

cut the right stick once, so the detached part slides to the left, goes under the ball and tips it up into the air.

At the same time, cut a tip from the top-right of the right stick, which makes the stick swing to the left like a pendulum, hit the ball in the air.

I tried dozens of time and haven't been able to duplicate the result more than once.

Does anyone have a better solution?

Thanks Eric by the way, though I got it just before I saw that post :D <3

@SkyfyS Day - I can't seem to make it do that at all.. ): I tried..

..cutting a corner from the right stick so it swings and hits the big stick, then cutting a piece from the big stick as it comes round so that it falls off and hits the ball to the right. Can only get it about a third of the way up though..

EasyGoing July 27, 2009 4:25 PM

As for 31 the thing I do is:

1. nick a bit of the right stick so it starts to swing
2. As it swings left cut of a chunk so it falls behind the ball pushing it a bit to the right (you just need a little nudge, so it should work almost all the time)
3. Now that the ball is a little bit to the right the left stick won't miss it

The first part had more thinking in it. Now there is a lot of nice physics which gives a WOW effect. But unfortunately the puzzles play a second role now.

You can see this even in the custom made levels. Most of them are clever contraptions not puzzles.

But still a nice game. It just needs more "puzzle" in it.

Reply

Wow.. this is one heck of an improvement! Mostly on the art department, but the level design is also better. The music is perfect, the visuals are much better (no more creepy smiling face with a knife!) :D

Reply

I like this one even more than the original, and it was my fav. game.

Reply

31:

Cut a bit off the upper-left corner of the right stick. The stick will swing down to the right; as it swings past the bottom and it on its way back up, cut nearly all of it off, so the cut piece flies over the ball and nudges the ball to the right as it lays flat.

Then cut a bit off the upper-right corner of the left stick; it'll down down to the left and chip the ball up the ramp into the goal.

Stuck on level 19. Any help?

Reply

Okay, I realize I gave the exact same advice that EasyGoing did. :-) (In my defense, his comment wasn't there when I last viewed the page!)

Reply

19:

#1: see the lump to the right of the ball? Make a near-horizontal cut and cut off as much of it as you can. It doesn't have to slide off and fall away, but it's better if it does.

#2: cut a near-vertical (lower-left to upper-right) slice across the long connector, about a fourth of the way across from left to right (there's a gridline in the background to use as a reference point). The big hunk on the left will swing down and tip the long connector upwards, the lump you cut off in #1 will fall away, and the ball will roll off the edge and fall into the goal.

Any hints for level 27? It's driving me nuts!

Reply

26:

This is tricky. Make a horizontal cut near the top of the beam, a pixel or two above the white guideline.

The long beam will spin around and hit the L-shaped piece at the top, and the L-shaped piece will be knocked to the left, down the ramp, and off the edge...just in time for the long beam to swing around again, catch it, and fling it into the ball, knocking it into the goal.

If this doesn't work, you can try cutting little pieces off the end of the long beam as it swings, so they fly over and hit the ball. I think this is how the level is intended to be solved, but it's still pretty tricky.

27:

Y'see how the ball has a very small left-and-right wobble? Cut the edge as the ball is swinging to the right. The ball should very slowly roll to the right, off the ledge.

As the ball is rolling along the lower beam, cut the beam, timing it so the ball falls into the goal.

Reply

26:

Cut the beam near, but leave yourself a little piece to play with in an L shape. As the long beam swings around, cut a piece off the L so the beam flings it into the ball. Much easier than trying to time the momentum to cut a piece off the swinging beam.

Reply

Nice game, but I couldn't do level 18.
Could you help me, please? :D

Reply

18:

Cut diagonally from the lower right corner of the brick area, down and to the right. Make this cut right as the ball crosses the right edge of the brick area.

The bulk of the wood will swing upwards, and if you time it right, the ball will flip over the top of the wood, roll down its backside, and begin rolling on the ground towards the goal. The diagonal piece you cut off will serve as a ramp, and the ball will roll up and into the goal.

The timing is tricky, but not as hard as it sounds.

Reply

The nuke level, #16? Clearly I'm supposed to throw the wood at the guy, but how?

Reply

16:

Wait until the wood has rotated until it has a vertical line in the middle, with two hunks in the upper and lower left, and one hunk in the middle of the right side.

Cut off the entire upper left hunk; it'll slide down the lower left hunk and hit the ball, which will swing up into the goal.

Czaerana July 29, 2009 1:32 PM

I just can't get the ball up the ramp on level 30. Either the ramp is too steep or their isn't enough force in the swing! Any hints?

Reply

What is that "Whuuuuuh" sound that incessantly plays over the music and FX? It sounds like an opening, draw-back-the-curtain effect, but on repeat loop it's very annoying.

Reply

I got this looped "Whuuuuuh" sound glitch, too. But it only happens sometimes, so just refresh the game until you get rid of it.

I'm stuck on level 9!

31 is easy if you follow this.

cut smallest piece from top left of right stick. when it gets close to hitting the other stick cut it off from the base so it flies to the left and moves the ball right then cut a small bit from the top right of the left stick and let gravity do its work
