Weekday Escape

JessSolitude, the new point-and-click adventure/escape game from Japanese designer 58 Works, begins with a brief animation of a plane, one wing trailing smoke, plummeting from the sky into the ocean. A young man pulls himself out of the water and collapses onto a beach, exhausted by the ordeal—little does he know that his trials have barely begun. Playing as the sole survivor of the accident, can you solve puzzles, collect objects and unlock the secrets of this mysterious island? Most important of all, will you find a way to escape your paradisal prison?

SolitudeSolitude is, at its core, a game of exploration. The game's puzzles are essentially pragmatic and realistic, mainly of the "collect item A to resolve obstacle B" variety (I simplify, but you understand what I mean). While the setting may be a bit fantastical, the ways in which you must use objects and manipulate the environment are completely reasonable, given the protagonist's situation. This means that Solitude is (hooray!) refreshingly logical. Every action makes sense, every solution is comprehensible. At the same time, those looking for raw intellectual challenge may not be entirely satisfied; while I would definitely not call the game easy, it isn't close to the most mentally taxing game you'll find in the genre.

Solitude's neat, colorful and professional-looking graphics create a very pleasant environment, one that is a pleasure to view and interact with. The interface is clean and user-friendly, and will be familiar to anyone accustomed to playing escape games. There's no pixel-hunting, per se (that is, no painstaking searches to find barely existent hotspots), but a number of important items are either hiding in plain sight or concealed in the environment, so make sure to run your cursor over everything in each scene. It's a little bit disappointing that Solitude does not contain a save feature; in my opinion, such an absence is inexcusable, particularly in a game created by such an excellent designer. Still, as Solitude is based more upon finding and then using items rather than solving complex puzzles, half-finishing and then restarting the game shouldn't cost you too much time.

All in all, Solitude is another superlative, highly entertaining effort from a consistently excellent designer. So, slip away from your busy week to bask for a little while in tropical isolation—while you may be trying to escape, you may be sorry to leave! Enjoy.

Solitude Walkthrough

General Information

  • Despite the opening animation this is not a very special episode of "Lost".

  • For ease of use of this walkthrough the island will be referred to in various sections: the Beach/Cave area, the Path/Intersection area (including the paths to the left and right), and the River/Waterfall area.

  • Some items will not show up and some actions cannot be done until other tasks are completed. For instance, you can rotate the statues forever, but until you've seen the clue showing their proper position they will not work, even if you accidently hit upon the solution.

  • The cursor will turn into a hand when you hit a hot spot. Watch closely.

  • You can pull up items from your inventory by double clicking on them. To close them down again click on the yellow "X" in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

  • Let's settle back, sip a Mai Tai, and begin.

Beach/Cave

  • When the opening animation finishes you will find yourself on a beach. On the beach is a stick, pick it up.

  • Turn left. You should now be facing a cave.

  • At the bottom of your screen you will see a red crab hiding in the greenery. Click on it.

  • The crab will run into the cave. Follow it.

  • Oh dear, it's dark. You might be eaten by a grue.

  • Go back.

  • Turn left.

  • You should now be facing a path. On the left side of the path is a rock. screenshot. Click on the rock several times to move it.

  • Take the rope that is revealed.

  • Go forward.

Path/Intersection

  • You are now at a path intersection, being watched by chirpy birds.

  • To the right, under the greenery, is a bundle of twigs. Take the twigs. screenshot.

  • On the tree branch by the birds a white cloth is hanging.

  • Click on the stick in your inventory and click on the cloth to get it down.

  • Take the right-hand path.

  • Oh look, an old army tank! Go forward.

  • You have now arrived at a hornet's nest. On the ground to the right underneath the leaves is a wrench, take it. screenshot

  • Go back.

  • Now look at the tank closely. There is a fuel tank with a gas cap noticeable. Use the wrench to open the gas cap. screenshot.

  • Pull up the stick from your inventory by double clicking.

  • Once the stick is on the screen click on the white cloth (T-shirt) in your inventory then click on the stick. You have just made a torch!

  • Close down the torch then dip it into the spilling gas.

  • Turn left.

  • You are now back at the intersection. Take the left-hand path.

  • Oh look, a chest being held by overgrown tree roots. There's nothing you can do here now, so go forward.

  • You are now at a fire pit. You don't have all the elements for fire yet, so go forward.

River/Waterfall

  • You are now facing a rock door with a large wooden bar.

  • There is a dark spot in the water to the lower left. Click on it to get the hammer. screenshot.

  • Go right.

  • Look closely at the pool beneath the waterfall. Every now and then a section of the pool will glint. Click on that area to get the magnifying glass. screenshot.

  • To the right is a bush with red berries on it. Click on the bush (may take several tries to find the right spot) to get a red fruit.

  • Go left twice.

  • You are now at a bend in the river. Look closely in the greenery below the river and you will see a hook. Take it. screenshot.

  • Go right and then go back once until you are at the fire pit.

  • Put the twigs in the fire pit.

  • Use the magnifying glass on the fire pit to start a fire.

  • Once the fire is lit use the torch on the fire to light it.

  • Go back, right, and back again to get to the beach.

Beach/Cave

  • Turn right and go into the cave.

  • Click on the torch in your inventory and click on the darkness. You now have enough light to see.

  • Go forward.

  • You are now at an intersection in the cave. Click on the skull on the ground to get the white stone. screenshot.

  • Go right.

  • Oh look, a door. And it looks like you need four stones to open it.

  • Go back and take the left path.

  • You are now in a chamber with sunlight coming in and a mysterious hole in the ground. In the back left of the cave is a rock, click on it to move and then take the crab. screenshot.

  • Go back three times to leave the cave and then turn left to face the path.

  • Go forward.

Intersection/Path

  • Take the right-hand path to the tank and then go forward to the hornet's nest.

  • Use the torch on the hornet's nest to drive them away.

  • Go forward. You should now be at the edge of a cliff being watched by a snake.

  • In the bushes to the right is a yellow stone. Take it. screenshot.

  • Tie the rope to the branch to the right of the snake.

  • Go down the rope to the cove.

  • Once in the cove you will see a strange root vegetable (rather like a turnip, or a radish). Take it. screenshot.

  • To the right is a rock in the cliff face. Break it with the hammer to get the red stone.

  • Go back up the rope, then go back, back, and left to the intersection.

  • Take the left-hand path.

  • Use the crab from your inventory to cut the roots holding the chest. It will take at least 3 clicks to do this.

  • Once the chest is in your inventory go forward twice to the stone door.

River/Waterfall

  • Click on the root vegetable in your inventory and click on the wooden bar. You have now thrown the vegetable at the bar to remove it. Yes, seriously.

  • Go forward. To the right of the corridor, mostly hidden by a plant, is a wooden object. Take it. screenshot. You now have a primitive ladder.

  • Go forward.

  • To your left, hidden by the greenery, is a green stone. Take it. screenshot.

  • Go into the door on your left.

  • To your left are two barrels. Click on the front barrel to move it and you will see a crack in the wall. Hit the crack with the hammer and take the object (a whistle). screenshot.

  • To your right are some pipes. Behind the pipes is a wood plank, take it.

  • Pull up the wood plank from your inventory and click on it to turn it over. There appear to be instructions.

  • Hmm, the light fixture appears to be missing a bulb. I wonder if that is important?

  • Go back to the courtyard.

  • Now place the ladder against the rocks to the right of the door.

  • Go up the ladder.

  • On your left is a panel that appears to be missing something. On the ledge below the pipe thing is a stick. Take the stick. screenshot.

  • Go down and then back twice until you are at the river facing the door.

  • Turn left to the river bend.

  • Time to go fishing!

  • First, pull up the fruit from your inventory by double clicking.

  • Now click on the crab in your inventory and click on the fruit to open it up.

  • Take the exposed white seed.

  • Close the seed down and double click on the stick to bring it up.

  • Click on the hook and then click on the stick to attach.

  • Now click on the white seed and click on the hook. Close down the now baited fishing pole. You are now ready to fish!

  • Click on the fishing pole and then click on the river towards the back.

  • Keep doing this until you catch an orange fish (usually 3 times).

  • Go to the right, then back, back, right, and back and you should be back at the beach.

Beach/Cave

  • Turn left.

  • Look at the water closely, something will be floating in it.

  • Take the floating object. It appears to be a solar panel. Let's hope its delicate circuitry hasn't been damaged by long immersion in salt water!

  • Turn right to the path, then go forward, left, forward, and forward again until you are at the river.

River/Waterfall

  • Go forward across the bridge and forward again until you are in the courtyard.

  • Go up the ladder and place your fish on the platform on the right.

  • Place the solar panel into the panel on the left.

  • Pull up the whistle from your inventory and click on it to play.

  • Close down the flute.

  • Make sure the flute is highlighted in your inventory and click just above and to the left of the fish's head. The eagle should land and start to eat the fish.

  • Look closely at the eagle's talons. There is an object there, click on it. You now have a key!

  • Pull up the chest from your inventory and use the key to open it. Take the light bulb.

  • Go down the ladder and into the door on your left.

  • Put the bulb into the ceiling light fixture and take a good look at the back wall. It appears to be a clue!

  • Go back and now go to the right.

  • You should now be facing four moai, or statues.

  • Click on each statue to rotate until they are in the position indicated by the clue on the storage room wall. The two left statues should be facing each other and the two right statues should be facing each other. screenshot.

  • When the statues are in the correct position they will rise up to reveal a door. Go into the door.

  • You are now in a strange underground room. Notice the scepter standing in the mysterious hole to the right. Take the scepter. screenshot.

  • Oops, now you are trapped.

  • Use your hammer on the stalactite (stalagmite? whatever) hanging from the ceiling just to the right of the door. Take the broken off stalactite.

  • Place the stalactite in the mysterious hole and the door should open up.

  • Go through the door.

  • Now go left, back, back, back, back, right, and back to get to the beach.

Beach/Cave

  • Turn right to face the cave and go in.

  • Go forward and take the left-hand tunnel.

  • Now place the scepter in the mysterious hole. This should cause the ray of light to shine on the back wall. Use your hammer on that spot on the wall to get the blue stone.

  • Go back and then take the right-hand tunnel.

End Game

  • Place the colored stones in the slots in the wall from left to right: Green (leaf), white (cloud), red (fire), and blue (water).

  • The door should now open, go through it.

  • Goody, a mysterious sphere floating in the water. Click on the top of the sphere to open it.

  • Go into the sphere.

  • On the wall to the right is a slot. Place the yellow stone in it. Controls should now rise from the floor. screenshot.

  • Click on the controls and you are out of there!

  • To be continued?

  • See, I told you it wasn't a very special episode of "Lost". More like "The Abyss".

Found 6 items

stick, rope, straw that I placed on firepit, a wrench, fishing hook and line, and berry

have you got

the stick, the shirt, and the gasoline, not to mention the fire?

yeah another escape game. huzzah. :-)

That was a fun diversion. =D just make sure to

pay attention to wherever your cursor turns to a hand.

Yeah, I'm done now. I figured that out right after I posted. I especially liked the Lego bull that rises up inside the

at the end. Made the whole story make perfect sense.

It seems like the intro is telling me to buy their t-shirt (lets pretend they're selling one)

The one survivor just happens to be wearing a 58 t-shirt... coincidence? I think not! xD

Well, that was fun. Most everything made sense. Except, ...you know.

But gosh, while playing I kept thinking I'd played it before. Not the exact same game, but darn similar: tropical island, bridges, statues. Same artwork, it seems.

Anyone know what escape game I'm thinking of?

Reply

Hey Bad Dog, I was thinking the exact same thing! I know I have played this game before, or at least it seems nearly identical to a game I have played a few years ago maybe. Oh man, this is going to take some detective work, lol.

Reply

So the game that this is very, VERY similar to (albeit this is a shorter version) is "Escape from Island" by Japanese developers Aztec Games. Ha, what a rip.

Reply

I really liked the game in general. The movement is great, with good visual feedback. I missed something that tells me I could double click items, though.

And the ending was very captivating! The vibrant feel of everything is a nice change from the usual dark atmosphere of these games.

But I prefer puzzles that rely more on logic, rather than finding hidden objects.. the worst of them, in my opinion was this:

Throwing that carrot on the wooden bar! When we pick that item, we imagine it was somewhat special.. couldn't I throw a rock or something? Besides, that carrot sending the log to the moon seems to violate several laws of physics

I'm not sure what to think of the puzzles that can only be solved after you do something else. Maybe it was necessary?.. o_O

I'm fairly certain the so called root vegetable is a sprouted coconut. It makes more sense to be chucking that around.

Good game. Enjoyed it.

Click on the root vegetable in your inventory and click on the wooden bar. You have now thrown the vegetable at the bar to remove it. Yes, seriously.

Seriously?

I always figured I was supposed to build a fishing rod and then hurl that at the log to get the hook caught and then yank it back and off.

Great game, even with that minor illogical part.

ThemePark,
a point-n-clicker being absolutely logical from the first click to the last is one of the typical things that make me rate it a 5.

Not that I'm complaining TOO much, but why is there a walkthrough as soon as the game is published?

Part of the fun of these kinds of games is discovering all of the clues and, if stuck, ask people in the comments.

Reply

About the "carrot" or "root vegetable"

That's not a vegetable, but a coconut - one that's started to sprout a plant.

I don't think it would be that hard once it started to grow a plant however.

I always remember it by thinking that stalactites have to hold *tight* to the ceiling :)

Be careful what you use that hammer for. Don't leave it anywhere. When I was

trapped in the cave, I took the scepter/staff thingy and put my hammer in its place. Now I'm back in the beach cave, with no hammer to break the wall to get the magic stone and I can't pick up the staff again.

I kinda agree, fuzzboxer.

I enjoyed playing the game, and wouldn't have been able to finish it without help, but as soon as the walkthrough was published, and i had one quick look to get around a seemingly impossible part of the game, i couldn't stop myself from going back for 'just one more' peek every time i ran into a problem, and didn't really try to figure it out myself.

Yes, i know that i don't have to use it, but if its there i will. So a suggestion - although i imagine if grinnyp goes to the effort of writing one, she (he) would want it up straight away - delay publishing of walkthrough for say, 24hrs to allow us to try and reach the end through teamwork?

My two cents.

You can go back to the cave and grab your hammer, whack around the cave with it til you find something else to fill the hole so you can leave

BladeStorm, and I thought I was the only one suffering from the "just one more peek" syndrome. XD Once I'm completely stuck in a game and go look in the walkthrough the game is pretty much over for me.

bioLarzen, my comment wasn't meant as a critisism (sp?) towards the game. But when grinnyp wrote it like that, and it did in fact turn out to be rather illogical, I had to comment that. XD

Besides, there is no such thing as a game which is logical from start to finish. The fact that this game only seemingly only has one illogical bit, warrants it a 5 automatically in my book.

Puzzles and the whole game did not make any sense.

It was a guess-what-the-designer-is-thinking charade, which evidently was not better than guess-what-I-had-for-breakfast.

I'm not expecting every point&click to be like "Morningstar". But seriously, this game is just a aimless, blind search that should be solved by mindless computer programs, not by any human being with two working brain cells.

(Too harsh? :-)

Nice game, despite the pixel-hunting involved for some items. That "Use Radish with Bridge" part was the most nonsensical puzzle I've ever seen in an escape game, and probably the funniest too.
Also, I kept feeling a deja vu through the entire game... Even the golden rod was there!

Flip the screenie horizontally and compare it to the Weekday Escape logo. Eh? Eh?

I was thinking the same thing, DeGnominator! :)

I wish that my car had little white puff balls coming out the back just like the little submarine thing. So cute. Sequel? Yes?

I'm having trouble with

getting the eagle to eat the fish. I have the solar panel and whistle in position. Do I have to turn something on?

Reply

The only thing I didn't like was the

crab!! I tried to cook it, whack it with the hammer, all sorts of things to eat it. If they had let you find a knife or a hatchet it would have been easier. oh yeah, lets cut tree roots with a crab!!! I do that all the time. give me a machete

and would have made more sense! The rest of the game was all logical, more or less ;o)

Reply

I'm having the same trouble as Cy Reb, Jr.

I can't get the stupid bird to land. The fish is in place and I'm blowing the whistle but not much is happening

Reply

Sorted it.

Orange fish required....

where do you get the green stone?

Reply

The walkthrough has a screenshot of the green stone's exact location.

And you should look out for stalagmites because otherwise you "might" trip over one and fall and hurt yourself.

OK, that was terrible and I'm sorry. :)

That's not a turnip or radish. That's a coconut. That's how hard a coconut is.

The thing that got me was

that I needed to open the fruit with the crab to get the white seed inside to use as bait. I mean, that fruit sure looked like a berry to me. I got that I needed to use it as bait, but I didn't think to open it. If it has looked more like a coconut, or some other fruit that needs to be peeled, that would have made more sense. Even the bush it was growing on made it look like a berry.

So, I started playing the game but got bored after a while. I didn't find the random item hunting annoying, but I didn't like how things just magically appeared somewhere when you checked them later. And the whole Arrow turns into a hand thing sorta ruined it for me.

Reply

I didn't think throwing the sprouted coconut at the bar was too illogical. What got me was why couldn't I just throw a rock, then?? D: But anyway... I thought this was an excellent choice this time! Really fun and, in my opinion, logical puzzles. They were all pretty easy, but this was a fairly long game with lots to explore. (I love when games go beyond the regular four screens.) Definitely one of the best games in weeks!

I agree about the walkthrough... I think it's better if players, not admin or reviewers, create the walkthrough...and for it to not go up quite so quickly.

Am I playing another game? Double clicking on an item does absolutely nothing. What's wrong?

Reply

I would have given this 5 stars, but ...

... the "hiding" of the mallet was unconscionable.

I'm a big fan of the arrow-turns-to-a-hand-on-a-hotspot mechanism of escape games, but that shouldn't be the only indication that something is available to be picked up. In this case you click on a dark patch in the water (itself partially hidden behind a stone) and receive a hammer. Ridiculous.

I probably wouldn't have been as annoyed by that if the rest of the game wasn't so polished and fair.

I'm the one who asked about it and I posted the link right afterward. Now we have FOUR links to that game on this page. Ha ha!

Personally I loved the bit of lateral thinking involved in this one. It seems to me a lot of people are quick to call something "illogical" if they didn't get it. The opposite is in fact the case: lateral thinking is logic unbounded by everyday assumptions, and as such is the essence of games like this.

Good game, I am impressed how many good escape games JIG manages to dig up with the proliferation of, frankly, crap that is out there. (I would know... I've played several hundred at this point)

This game is cool. It reminds me of Escape From Island. the graphics are very similar.

I was also reminded of the Aztec Games series! I'm rather disappointed, actually, that there haven't been more of those. Still, this could end up somewhere good, but no more radish-throwing, please.

Nice call, Paul, you're only a day and a half slow on that one

Attention, potential castaways: in case of emergency, uninhabited islands have been outfitted with special escape craft. Some ingenuity required.

This was a lot like the Island Escape game, but it stood well on its own, without needing part of a bigger plot. I got very far without a walkthrough, but I missed a couple of things hidden behind similarly-coloured objects positioned near the movement arrows. It wasn't a pixel click, but more like hidden object elements in an exploratory escape game.

One other problem for an otherwise enjoyable game: one of the obstacles toward the end attempts to trick the player. Whether it was intentional or not, it made me run to a walkthrough rather than run my cursor over all of every screen.

When you took out the scepter, I put the hammer in its place. The fact that you could put the hammer in the other hole led to this assumption, but there was the problem of not being able to take the scepter back out. Add that to the fact that the stalactite looked like a foreground object that was in an area that didn't attract the eye, and I ended up giving up early, certain I didn't know what I had missed.

Now that the nitpicking's over, I can enjoy another island adventure! If only we can get a new Tipping Point soon...

what??

i've got a yellow stone, no white one!

have anyone got a solution for this problem?

To solve your problem:

Go back to the cave where the skull and bones are. The white stone is hiding under the skull. Here's a screenshot.

Im just wondering why i cant play this or any other 58works games...One day im playing them, then when this came out, i tried, and it wont let me play it or any of the other games. It just has a small box in the top left corner with the shapes...not sure what it means, and its probably something simple, so if anyone can tell me why, thanks, because this is a good series and you basicly cant play them anywhere but on that site...so, thanks for any explanation ^ ^

just a quick note about the "root vegitable" mentioned in the tutorial, its a coconut that has sprouted. Just so you know if you would like to correct this minor mistake in the walkthrough :P

Actually I was a day and a half early, boatshoes. Just didn't get posted until later. ;)

OK! I think we can all agree the game looks a lot like Escape from Island. I'm about to delete all these comments except for the first mention of it in a minute.

Just wanted to note as another poster did that I also can't play it. The page won't load. There's just an empty box with an 'x' in the upper left corner and a lot of Japanese jargon. Is it my computer??

something is wrong with my game... I played it at home but when I wanted to show it to a friend on his comp the puzzles were already solved... I mean when I went to the cave I already had a torch, when I went to the river

I tossed that raddish thing, though I only had a stick in my inventory before. and when I moved mouse over the fireplace, the fire lit.

Whats wrong? Is it the games problem or my friends computer's???

Does anybody know if you can interact with the snake or the pair of birds? I was surprised when I came to the end of the game without needing to interact with these critters. Did I miss something?

The setting is calm and relaxing, but I wish there was some music. It's okay without it though, I just would've loved some. I managed to get stuck pretty early. Somethings I didn't like were-

Hammer:

Could easily be mistaken for a simple shadow in the water.

How to lower the bridge:

I really wish you threw a rock instead of a fruit. Would've made it easier to realize.

Getting the chest:

I don't think normally a crab could cut that... :c

The rope:

I wish a tiny bit of the rope was showing from under the rock. X_X

Those are the only things that irked me, but everything made enough sense to me. Besides those things, it was kinda relaxing.

Everything that can possibly be bad in an escape game, this game has.

Pixel hunting like clicking on completely obscure rocks and putting thing together that totally don't go together.

This game is awful.
