JaySigil of BindingSigil of Binding is a simple puzzle game submitted to our recent game design competition by John-Paul Walton of Ohio, USA. It is based on the familiar 'flip the squares to turn them all the same' concept of puzzles, and yet John-Paul's impressive audio and visual production skills turn this version into one all his own.

To play, simply move the mouse over the puzzle grid to highlight an outline of the squares to flip. When the mouse is clicked, all squares within the outline will flip over to reveal either a section of the sigil or the dark brown underside of each piece. The objective is to turn all 16 squares to the sigil image for each of the eight (8) puzzles contained in the collection, and to do it in the fewest possible moves.

Analysis: This was yet another competition entry that was only narrowly edged out from being a winner (note to self: get more prizes for the next competition!) The presentation of this game is certainly one of the best I've seen in any Flash puzzle game, and John-Paul clearly shows he is no novice to the Flash platform. Although the concept is not an original one, it is one of my favorite types of puzzles and I enjoyed playing this game over and over until I solved it. An engaging and compelling puzzle game, and an excellent entry to the competition, Sigil of Binding will have you bound.

Wow, this is hard! I can make it to the 7th, but then I run out of moves.... My problem comes from the 5th puzzle, I'm sure. What's the fewest moves for it?

Anyway, a very nice game! I love the sounds...very relaxing. Unless you run out of moves, that is! XD It looks great! Good job, John-Paul! ^_^

Jay, why don't you sort games into catogries, ie point and click, arcade, card, platform, etc. Makes it alot easier to find games rather than searching pages and pages of reviews

rach - soon. Do you see the tags just under each game title? They will be functional soon. Please bear with me, there's a lot of work to do!

Woohoo! Beat it after about 4 attempts total. Takes a fair amount of thinking ahead, but also a fair amount of wild guesses to start yourself off, and see where it leads. Theres a similar game for the DS (New Super Mario Bros Minigame) which I enjoy playing also, but it takes all eight squares surrounding the one you click instead of the 4 adjacent ones as in this game. I much prefer overturning just the 4; it makes it much harder.

Here's the fewest number of moves for each of the puzzles:

1: 1

2: 2

3: 3

4: 3

5: 5

6: 4

7: 5

8: 4

Ow ... brain ... hurts. Not ... feeling ... so casual. Need more side-scrollers and first-person shooters!

I remember enjoying this game significantly during the contest. It may not be an original concept, but it is very nicely put together and it keeps you clicking.

Hi all,

To breadth-first, I don't really understand your solution... you need to define where (0,0) is? Also, I tried using those coordinates using (0,0) as every corner, and some of the solutions just didn't make any sense...

Let me know what the code means.

This is how the table is laid out.

__0-1-2-3
0 X X X X
1 X X X X
2 X X X X
3 X X X X

The first row is 0, first column is 0, and so forth.

Pretty good game... I was a bit confused at first as I was able to finish some levels in more moves. Thought it was somehoe missing it... but realized after a bit that the entire game has a certain numbers of move. To finish it takes the fewest moves each.

That circle looks almost exactly like the human transmutation circle of fullmetal alchemist except with eight symbols on the edge. But even those are similar. Brilliant game.

...Human transmutation whatnow?

I wish it didn't make you start from the beginning again when you fail. I can't be bothered to try to finish the game if i have to keep starting from the beginning.
