Rose Temple

elleWhen you first enter the Rose Temple, TomaTea's distinctive style of pastel artwork and harmonious design might lull you into a quiet state of serenity. The pinkest pink roses and cornflower blue sky might make you think you're in another world and a timeless season altogether. But after poking around a bit, you realize that it isn't a peaceful benevolence that has dropped you into this locked room, but a clever mind tinged with deviousness—if you ever want to escape this place, you'll have to match wits against the designer's tricky devices to collect five roses and retrieve the door's lever.

Rose TempleA glow-tip cursor aids your explorations as you point and click, seeking out objects to pick up as well as interactive areas. To use an item, just highlight its square, or click the tiny "i" in your inventory to examine it in detail. For the most part, every puzzle is soundly logical though made more challenging by multiple clues and less-than-blatant presentation. TomaTea eschews the familiar tile arrangement puzzle for a pipe connecting minigame that can be frustrating, but in a good way. Just as vexing, yet perhaps not as good, is an unassumingly ordinary area that just happens to be interactive. If you can't forgive the challenge of a pixel hunt, the enjoyment of solving a well-crafted puzzle should sooth sore feelings and soon lead the way to freedom, with a glimpse of beautiful roses for your reward.

Rose Temple Walkthrough

From First Explorations...

  1. When you start out, you'll be facing a Grecian statue...

    • At the base of the statue, there are five hollows for rose placement.

    • Notice that the statue's hand is interactive and that, when you click on her finger, you get a "I have no clue" message.

  2. Look at the top of the column, next to the statue.

    • Make a note of the square, circle, and cross symbols etched there.

  3. Zoom in on the pillar of roses on the right side of this wall.

    • Grab your first STONE ROSE (1 of 5) that's nestled amongst the rose vines.

    • Back up then click the bottom of the pillar: there is a tile in the floor that is interactive, but you'll need the proper tool to get at it.

  4. Look at the grating on the left side of this wall...

    • It looks like a pipe or something is missing in the lower left corner.

  5. Turn left to view the next wall; here is a fountain...

    • Pick up ROSE #2 from inside the basin.

    • Note that the faucet is missing a knob.

    • Also make note of the interesting design on the back of the fountain.

  6. Turn left again to face the wall with the exit door, flanked on either side by arched niches with hand plaques.

  7. Zoom in on the drawers on the right side of the door...

    • You have no clue yet for opening the top drawer.

    • The bottom drawer can be opened now, but we'll come back to it in a bit.

    • On the shelf above the drawers are four different colored spheres. Pick up each to examine it:

    • Green=Diamond; Red=Circle; Yellow=Starburst; Purple=Square

    • Also look at the right hand plaque; something square is missing from the center of the hand.

  8. Then, get a better look at the niche area to the left of the door...

    • This left hand plaque has a screw holding it in place.

    • The box below the left hand has four wedges holding a panel closed. Note the shape of each wedge.

  9. Turn left again and you'll see another rose high up in the rafters. Look at the intricate pipe connecting puzzle.

    • There is a spot to its right that is missing a button.

  10. Then, look at the sunken pedestal on the floor, below the puzzle...

    • Here are three more images etched in the stone: diamond in a square; x in a circle; cross in a square.

  11. On the right side is a niche with three vases...

    • Pick up the small green-rimmed VASE.

...to Reaching the High Rose

  1. Above the vases is a 3-button puzzle:

    • Change the design on each of the three buttons to solve the puzzle.

    • SOLUTION:

By combining the information on the column by the goddess statue with the information on the floor below the pipes puzzle, you can infer that you're supposed to subtract one from the other to get...
      DIAMOND, X, SQUARE
      Screenshot: Three Buttons Solution

    • When correct, click the tiny button underneath and you'll get a "Solved" message as well as the sound of something happening...

  2. Back up to see the sunken column has risen up.

  3. Click on the column to climb up it and grab the high ROSE (#3).

Bottom Drawer: 4 Colors

  1. To open the bottom drawer under the right hand plaque, you need to combine clues from the colored spheres and the fountain.

  2. Enter the correct colors on each of the four buttons, then click the tiny button beneath to open this drawer.

  3. SOLUTION:

Each of the spheres above the drawer have a design on them. The back of the fountain's basin has those same designs...Just start with the outer shape, as indicated by the arrow on top, and work you way in to get Circle-Star-Diamond-Square for...
    RED, YELLOW, GREEN, PURPLE

  4. When you open the drawer, you can get two items:

    • a brass BUTTON

    • and a FUNNEL.

Pipes Connecting Puzzle

  1. After getting the BUTTON from the bottom drawer, turn around to face the pipes-connecting puzzle.

    • Place the BUTTON in the hollow on the right side of the puzzle.

    • Then, press the BUTTON to activate the puzzle.

  2. Turn each of the tiles until all the pipes are connected, starting with the top left corner and ending in the bottom right corner (those two pieces are stationary).

  3. Make a note of what you see.

4-Brackets Panel and Using the Screwdriver

  1. Turn to face the door then zoom in on the panel below the left hand niche.

    • Each of the bracket-shaped buttons can be clicked on.

    • Use the clue you gained from solving the pipes connection puzzle to open this panel.

    • SOLUTION:

The dots are next to a segment which matches up with the shapes of the buttons on this panel. The number of dots indicates the sequence...
RIGHT, BOTTOM, TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, BOTTOM

  2. After pressing the buttons in the correct sequence, the buttons will pull away from the panel.

    • Click the middle of the panel to open it and get the SCREWDRIVER.

    • Notice that there's a hole in the wall behind this panel.

  3. Now that you have the screwdriver, there's two places you can use it... First, stand up and use the SCREWDRIVER on the left hand plaque.

    • Move the hand aside to see there's a hole here, too.

  4. Next, turn left from the niche. Zoom in on the floor tile at the base of the rose pillar...

    • Use the SCREWDRIVER to pry up the floor tile.

    • Get a PIPE WITH SPIGOT attached.

The Hand and the Ball

  1. After getting the PIPE WITH SPIGOT from under the floor tile, open your inventory to examine it:

    • Detach the SPIGOT from the PIPE.

  2. Turn around and go over to the right hand plaque to the right of the door.

    • Put the SPIGOT on the hand and click to turn it.

    • Notice the dots at the end of each finger.

  3. Turn back to the Grecian statue and zoom in on her hand holding the ball.

    • Click the fingers in the proper sequence....

    • SOLUTION:

After using the spigot on the right hand plaque, the number of dots next to each finger indicates the sequence...
      Pinky, Thumb, Middle, Ring, Index

  4. When done correctly, the statue drops the BALL.

    • Back up, zoom in on the base of the statue, and pick up the BALL from the ground.

  5. Go back over to the left hand plaque, move it aside to reveal the hole, and put the BALL in the hole.

  6. Now look behind the panel below the plaque to get what was pushed out:

    • another STONE ROSE (4/5). Take it.

Pipes and Top Drawer

  1. Take the spigot and go over to the fountain. Put the SPIGOT on the faucet and turn it on.

    • Fill the green-trimmed VASE with water.

  2. Turn right from the fountain and zoom in on the grate...

    • Attach the PIPE to the lower left corner of the grate.

    • Put the FUNNEL on top of the pipe.

    • Then, pour water from the VASE OF WATER into the funnel.

    • Make a note of the pattern made from the grate filled with water.

  3. Go back over to the right hand niche and zoom in on the top drawer...

    • Change the patterns on each button, then click the tiny button underneath to open this drawer.

    • SOLUTION:

Use the clue from the water grate pattern...
Bottom Left Arrow, Down Arrow/Up Arrow, Bottom Right Arrow, Stacked Up Arrows

  4. Once you get it open, take the 5th STONE ROSE from inside the top drawer.

5 Roses Locations and Escaping

  1. In order to escape, you need to have found 5 STONE ROSES from the following locations:

    • Nestled in with the other roses growing up a pillar.

    • Inside the fountain's basin.

    • High up in the rafters of the temple.

    • Dislodged from a hole behind the left hand niche.

    • Inside the top drawer in the right hand niche.

  2. Go over to the statue and zoom in on its base:

    • Place the 5 STONE ROSES in the rose-shaped hollows.

    • Get the DOOR LEVER.

  3. Go to the exit door and put the LEVER in the groove to its right.

  4. Pull the LEVER and escape!

Congratulations!

Rose Temple Walkthrough

I think this is my first complete walkthrough. It took a while to write up, which makes me appreciate all those who have done it (and for much longer games) that much more. Thanks!

I assume you know basic game mechanics and that you will do some exploring yourself.
I did include special instructions for the colorblind for the one puzzle that requires distinguishing colors.
Enjoy!

Starting
Ah, you are facing a beautiful classical statue. Very feminine. You can close up on her, but

she is cold and unresponsive. Back up.

Maybe you need something

more full of life

Close up on the roses. Grab the standout. Click the "i" by the rose in your inventory; you will need 5 of them.

What else can you close up on?

The pillar. You can't do anything yet, but observe the pattern.
You can also close up on the set of blue dots, but there's nothing to do there yet.

A pillar of society?

Take a right. Lots to look at, but do you see a twin to your rose?

Look up in the ceiling slats.

You can close up on it, but,

it's too high. Back up.

Hmmm, anything else look familiar?

If you look at the slab on the floor, it's face has the same shape as the first pillar. Does anything about the pattern look familiar?

The first pillar's square, circle, and plus have been paired each with another sign. Learn the order of new signs.

But what to do with this information?

Look at the pretty pottery in the right corner.

Take the green-rimmed bowl and keep it for later.

What else is there?

Three buttons with asterisks. Push them. The shapes should look familiar.

Push the shapes that were added in the second slab to those on the first pillar.

Diamond, X, square.

The slab has now risen into a pillar, and the first pillar has lowered.

Click the new pillar and you will reach the second rose.

You should now have a bowl and two roses. Back up. Go ahead, explore, come back to the walkthrough when you're stumped again.

Colors and shapes
Turn right to face a door flanked by two hands.
The title of this section should guide you to

The colorful balls on the right. You can close up on them. You can also lift them up individually.

For the colorblind:

The balls from left to right: Green, Red, Yellow, Purple.

And for everyone:

Pick up each ball individually. From left to right: Green = diamond; Red = circle; Yellow = Eight-pointed star; Purple = square.

You can click in various places, but the game insists you just don't know enough yet, posing an interesting epistemological conundrum we won't delve into here.
Turn right.

You are now facing a fountain flanked by two piles of sand.

Close up on the fountain. Oh, look. A rose! You should now have 3 roses.

What else do you see?

Those shapes should look familiar.

from the balls.

except for that triangle at the top, which apparently is an arrow telling you to go from the outside in.

learn the order of the shapes from the outside in

Circle, Eight-pointed star, Diamond, Square.

Go back to the hand flanked door to your left.

Close up on the balls and drawers on the right. You should now be able to play the bottom drawer puzzle.

Insert the colors corresponding to the shapes in the order you saw them on the fountain

Red, Yellow, Green, Purple.

For the color blind

The bottom drawer's colors correspond to the number of clicks as follows:
0 = white; 1 = Yellow; 2 = Red; 3 = Blue; 4 = Green; 5 = Orange; 6 = Purple; and then you're back at 0. So, the solution, by clicks, from left to right would be

2, 1, 4, 6

And don't forget

to click the button below the four color buttons. The door will open to reveal two objects: a plug and a funnel. Take them.

Not Benjamin's button (the plug)
Where to next? Let your inventory be your guide.

Where can you use a plug?

It's not really a plug. It's more of a button. Was there a puzzle missing a button?

Above the "new" pillar is a pipe game. To the right is a grey bump with a hole. Put the button in there and click. You can now click on individual tiles to rotate them

Play the pipes

The bottom right and top left tiles are immovable. It is your task to connect them for the free flow of something.

No pipe along the route can be left hanging. All paths must connect. You'll know when you get it because there will be a sound and new things will appear.
Tip:

Turn all three pronged pipes on the periphery inwards.

Once you solve it

Groups of blue dots will appear.

Which T?

If you've looked around the room, there is a puzzle that involves T's rotated in different directions.

It's under the left hand with the screw in its index finger.

Have you seen these shapes before?

They were pretty essential for the pipes puzzle you just solved.

Well, yea, I just gave it away, the pipes puzzle. Go look at it again.

Guess what the tiles with the blue dots have in common. I mean, don't guess, look.

Each has a T-pipe on it.

If you count the blue dots what do you notice?

They range from 1 to 6

The solution:

Are you sure? Try just one more time.

Okay. Match consecutively numbered (i.e. dotted) tiles with the orientation of the T. Then take that information to the puzzle under the hand (the under-handed puzzle?).

Click the T's in the correct order. Orientation is based on the top of the T, matching the orientation on the puzzle: right, bottom, top, bottom, left, bottom.

If you did it correctly

the T's will have moved away from the inner frame and you can now open the door to find a flat-head screwdriver. Notice also the perfectly round hole in the back.

Feeling a little screwy?

Where can you use the screwdriver?

you've only seen one screw, I mean, really

Try the left hand index finger.

Well, that flipped the hand 90 degrees to reveal another perfectly round hole, but, "I can't do much more with this," I hear you say.

You still have a screwdriver in your inventory.

Can screwdrivers be used not just to rotate screws?

How about prying?

Hopefully you did some exploring on your own, but in case you missed it: When you face the pipes puzzle, there is a tall brown pillar on the left. At its base is a pile of sand with a green smudge. Click in the area of the smudge, where the base of the pillar peeks out from the sand. The tile at the corner of the base highlights. Pry it open with your trusty screwdriver and pick up the strange looking object.

Playing with Water
Again, explore your inventory.

Examine the new object you picked up.

You can detach the knob from the pipe. You know where it goes.

Go to the fountain. Put knob on spout. You have two options: turn or remove. Removing would just be silly; you just placed it, so turn the knob.

Did anything happen? Are you sure? Back up.

Was that pattern on the right there before? Hint: no, it was not. Go look at it.

You are now facing four columns of dots with some lit up. They all make triangle patterns. This doesn't tell you very much, but while you are here you can do some other things.

Go back to your inventory.

Attach the pipe to the hole on the bottom left of the dotted board.

Anything else?

Try the funnel, while you're here.

What now?

That funnel is just begging to have something poured into it

like, maybe, water. But how? If only you had a receptacle with which to bring water to the pipe.

You have a lovely green-rimmed bowl just for that very purpose.

Go back to the fountain, turn the water on, select the bowl and click the water. Huzzah!

Return to the blue-dotted board and

you guessed it, pour water from bowl into funnel.

If you have done all of the above correctly, a new pattern should emerge on the blue dotted board:

Triangle pointing SW, hour-glass, triangle pointing SE, two triangles pointing up (or Christmas tree, if you prefer).

Where can we use this illuminated pattern? Any puzzles left?

Yep. The top "drawer" under the right hand.

Insert the code from the

blue-dotted board -- see above. Click button when you're done, and voila: another rose! You should now have four roses.

The right hand washes the left hand
Well I can't go to my default "let your inventory be your guide." So what now?
Examine closely the right hand above the puzzle you just solved.

It has a bunch of grouped dots on the right, but those don't match anything.

There's a square peg in the palm. (Ouch!) What might fit there?

Any plumbing equipment come to mind?

Go grab that knob from the fountain.

Once you do that, go back to the hand,

place the knob on the hand and turn.

The hand has turned revealing a new couple of dots. Each finger is now aligned with a group of dots, and we are old pros at counting by dots, are we not?

Memorize the order of the fingers as denoted by the number of dots.

Now, where have we seen

a hand?

a RIGHT hand, to be precise?

Go ahead, take gander around the room before you come to me for easy answers

Remember that lovely but stone-hearted lady from the opening? Yea? Go look at her hand, see if you can pry those fingers open.

Calling the fingers by their proper names, the solution is: Pinky, Thumb, Middle, Ring, and Index

Oops, she dropped something.

Go pick it up. If you're having trouble, click just to the right of your desired object.

Bowling for roses
I can say it again. Yeepee! Let your inventory be your guide.

Examine the ball. It has a seam, but

you have no tools to pry it open.

Can you put it somewhere?

somewhere perfectly round? somewhere it can travel, discover a new dimension, perhaps, and return with news and gifts of the unknown?

Maybe the lady had it all wrong holding the ball in her right hand.

Go put the ball in the hole of the left hand. You'll need to click the hand first so that it reveals the magic hole.

Oh, no! The ball disappeared. What now?

Go find it.

There was another hole, yes? Just under the left hand in the old T-puzzle. Gravity: it's not magic, but it is effective.

open the T-door under the left hand.

You should now have the fifth rose

The ball has had enough adventure for one day and will not budge.

A rose is a rose is a.
Go put them roses in their place.
Don't know where that is?

Do you recall seeing 5 roses etched somewhere?

Perhaps if you strew roses at her feet, that unwavering lady will take pity on you.

Place the roses on the rose-etched pedestal under the feet of the statue of the naked lady.

You should now get a what is that thing? A pestle?

No, it's a lever. You've gained some leverage with the old lady after all. Smile.

This is the end.

Enough nonsense. Place the lever in that space to the right of the main door. You know, the one flanked by the hands. Is it in? Good, now

pull down.

I hope you are not allergic to roses.

The end.

I am stuck.

I have the following:

  • 3 roses

  • green pot

  • funnel

  • screwdriver?

I'm thinking the hand with the dots next to it relates to the statue, but when I go to statue, I get the "I have no idea how to solve this" message.

@David John Bunge -

there's a panel that unlocks when you turn the hand with a screw

Reply

Out!

I looked elsewhere online and got the hint:

Use chisel/ screwdriver to pry up tile at bottom of pillar.

You get a pipe and faucet handle.

@miqis980 - Thanks.

I looked elsewhere online for walkthrough and was able to make it out after one hint, which I'm sharing here.

The tile at the bottom of the pillar can be removed by the screwdriver.

For the last Stone Rose.

Remember dots near fingers of the right hand. Use such finger sequence for the statue's hand. Then statue release the ball.

Here's something that helped me

in order to do the puzzle with the statue's hand, you have to go back to the faucet, remove the handle and put it on the hand with the square in it. Then you can turn the hand and it'll let you do the statue puzzle instead of saying "I have no clue how to solve this"

elle, Jay,
I'm trying to post a walkthrough and have diligently formatted the spoiler tags as they should be, but every time I paste it in, I get an "Invalid Comment Format: unmatched start tag,"[chevron]spoiler[closed chevron]"" message. Only one spoiler tag gets highlighted in red in the preview, but the rest don't function properly either. Help.

I spent a long time on this silliness. It would be a shame to have it all go to waste.
Thanks, NohWoman.

[Sounds like an end spoiler tag is missing somewhere. You can go through the text and count them until you find where it is... One way is to remove the red highlighted spoiler, then preview the rest to see what's still needed. -elle]

The end.
