Rob Allen's banner game

Have you been looking for a way to replay (or perhaps play for the first time) the banner game that Rob Allen created for us a couple years ago? When we updated the site layout moving to a larger, wider format, we temporarily lost the ability to swap stylesheets.

But now it's back! Just click the image above to switch the stylesheet over to the one that includes the banner game. Click it again to switch it back.

Play the Rob Allen Banner Game

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Hey, I beat it. Here is a clear and specific walkthrough.

Banner Game Walktrough:

Note: The letters are presented here in order for clarity. The letters cannot be lit in the exact order in which they appear in the words, but many of them can be lit in any order. Try to find as many as you can before resorting to this guide.

C:

Get the wand, and use it one your man while he's on the left side of the lake. He'll be flung into the lake and a mini-game will start. The man will follow your mouse pointer, and jump when you click. Grab all the letters and avoid the crab before the meter at the bottom runs out. Success will light up the C.

a:

Use the wand on the left lantern.

s:

Enter the Jaytrix (if you don't know what this is, see "Secrets") and some circles will show up. The circles represent a 3x3 section of a maze. The big circles are walls and the little circles are pathways. Click the little circles to move in the maze. When you find a star, make sure your screen is centered on it and click. You may or may not have to get the "a" in "Gameplay" first.

u:

After using the wand on both lanterns, a target will appear. Click it, then try to hit as many targets as possible. For the moving targets, I find that it's easiest to get them at the bottom of the screen. You need to hit at least 12 to win.

a:

Use the wand on the right lantern.

l:

Before getting the previous letter (refresh if you already did, you're progress is safe), move the man to the right side of the lake, near the fire. Click the fire to get a torch. Move the man to the left side of the lake and turn the right lantern on if it isn't already. When your torch burns out, the fireflies following you will move to the lantern. Press the button inside the l, then quickly turn of the lantern.

G:

Are you signed into JIG to leave a comment? You will need to be to get this letter. If you're already signed in, then you should already have this letter!

(Anonymous commenters may also get the "G". You'll have to leave a comment and click the box "Remember me" for it to work. Make sure you reload the page afterwards for the special "G" sauce.)

a:

In the Jaytrix, there is a switch on a tree. Flip it.

m:

Click on the hole in the tree on the very left side of the banner. Three red bugs will come out. When they are below the m, press the red button on said m.

e:

Turn the volume on for this. In the sky, there are 5 stars that are slightly bigger than the rest and light up when you rollover them. Click the stars to play notes from lowest to highest.

p:

At the top of the banner, there are some brown leaves. Click them. Go get a torch (move the guy to the fire and click the fire then come back) and click the pile of leaves below the p.

l:

After lighting the second letter a in "Gameplay," reload the banner (your progress is safe). There should be a rocket ship. Go get the frog but do NOT click on him. Zap him with the wand to turn him into a real boy. Click him now to make him go in the ship and start a mini-game. Avoid the alien eyeballs until you reach the end. A word of advice, when you come to the moving blue eyes, don't stay near the top or you'll get a nasty surprise.

a:

Get the frog and click on him to make him hop onto a lily pad. Now zap him with the wand to turn him into a human. Click the man to make him fish. If you look closely at the lake, you'll see a ripple come out of where the man is fishing, and another spot on the lake. Use your mouse to push the guy over to that spot and click him after the ripple.

y:

Get the frog (don't know how? See "Secrets") and click on him to make him go on a lilly pad. Push him over to the other side of the lake and click on him until he hops onto the "a". Now click the hole in the leftmost tree to make some bugs come out. when they reach the "e" in "gameplay," click the frog. Click him again after the green bug comes out to eat it (though it's worth watching what happens if you fail first).

Secrets

Wand:

After you light the "l" in "Casual," click your man to move him to the right side of the screen, then roll your mouse over both sets of reeds. A wizard will pop out from a tree. Click him while he's flying to get him to drop a magic wand.

The Jaytrix / do a jig / jay is MOST DEFINITELY games:

Assuming you're using an up-to-date browser and the latest copy of flash player, when you right click on the banner there should be an option called either: 1) "the jaytrix has you", 2) "do a jig", or 3) "jay is MOST DEFINITELY games". Click it and you'll be sucked into the Jaytrix.

The Frog:

Drag and drop the rocks to destroy them. Click the tree above where the rocks were to make new rocks. Eventually, a big rock will fall. Drag away this rock to find the frog.

[Orginially submitted by golden_cow2 August 8th 2007. ~Kero]

You must be signed into a valid casual gameplay account to complete the game now. You don't need to comment to finish. If the letter isn't showing up when you are signed in, try refreshing the page.

'u' is super hard to get T_T

Great idea Jay. This game was one of my first introductions to JIG as I remember. And what a great intro it was! I learned that JIG had a great community who would help me get to the end.

How do I reset the game, so I can replay it?

Reply

THANK YOU!!!
Thank you SO much for bringing the banner game back! It's like nostalgia (spelling error=?)!

Reply

By the way:
does anyone have a walkthrough? just in case. For anyone.

george bailey October 26, 2009 5:38 PM

Rob Allen rules. Totally.

Reply

Wow, this is awesome! I missed this theme for the site, and didn't like the new one as much. This brings to mind the question: could you recode all the old layouts so that we could pick one of several themes to see JiG in? I think it'd be a cool way to customize the site.

Reply

Thanks Jay. You might as well post the walkthrough here too. Thirty minutes back into it and I'm stumped :-)

Reply

It's weird which of these puzzles I remember and which ones I'm stumped at all over again. Thanks for bringing this back Jay!

Reply

Cool. I do have one question though:

How do you get "G" with the new format?

Reply

Anyone know what happened to Rob Allen's website? It's been gone for weeks now.

Reply
george bailey October 26, 2009 5:53 PM

Does anyone have any suggestions for lighting up the "G"?
It's all I have left...

Reply

This is pure awesome.

Reply

And the G appears to be auto-lit.

Reply

Nope.
Played in Firefow before, and now I tried it in Safari as well.
Nothing.
Good luck to all others - still a great game!

This is fantastic. So much puzzle from a single banner.

The banner game is fun, but I miss Tiny Game! I don't know why, but I love that little game. Any plan for its return?

[Edit: You can play the Tiny Game on the Tiny Game review page: https://jayisgames.com/archives/2009/07/tiny_game.php -Jay]

Reply

Okay, so, doing this should light up the G?

Reply

Aw, how strange, I don't remember having to sign in to get the "G" lit.
Did this change since the first version?

[Edit: Yes, it did change. If you recall, the old version had a smaller banner on all but the front page of the site. The "G" came from that smaller banner. That doesn't exist anymore since the full banner is on every page now. -Jay]

I'm posting as a guest at home but my biggest concern is that I can't find any sign of Mr Allen himself? Is Foon no longer around? Is he ok?

I do hope so as he really is a master.

Shall pop back to the banner game when I'm back on work tomorrow

Gaah! I

right-clicked and "did a jig"

and now I can't for the life of me figure out

this stupid 3x3 grid puzzle! I can see there's some sort of logic to it, but somehow I'm not seeing the pattern. This is really frustrating, especially since there's apparently no other way to go back to the main area of the game!

Sorry for so many posts so close together (thanks jim le fevre for breaking up the dreaded triple-post) but I have something that might be helpful (but not a COMPLETE givaway) for anyone having trouble with the

maze

and here it is:

a map! Well, an ascII map. Requires a fixed-width font and all. But it helped me handle the maze!

Reply

Aha, StephenM3! We're on the same brainwaves! That would be why I interrupted your triple post! (and now a double post from me! aplogies!)

Reply

Hm, I have a suggestion. Maybe you could be able to change between the stylesheets Jay is Games has had so far? That would be fun!

Reply

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the new rules for lighting the G. One of the things I love about JIG is I don't

have to have an account

to access all the good stuff. I wouldn't have reset my progress if I'd known I won't be able to complete it again without

signing up.

Just my two cents. Won't keep me from coming back.

Reply

Darn, even though I'm fullfilling the criteria to supposedly have the 'G' it's not lit. Does anyone else have this problem?

Reply

Its finally back =D I missed this so =(

Reply

Small things like this, makes a site so much more fun to be on. There should be more interactive banners in the future. Not necessarily a game, but just a thing you can play with, once in a while, when you don't know which game to play :D

Reply

If it didn't work for you in Firefox, give IE6 a try. This happened for me and it worked fine in IE6.

Actually the whole site seems to perform much better in IE6, its slow to load and scrolls jerkily, hanging in Firefox.

[Edit: Oh noes! Not IE6?!! The site looks horrible in IE6. *Jay just died a little inside from this comment. -Jay]

Reply

ok then let me ask this then. What do i do with the letters? i tried typing the letters, clicking on the letters, nothing works.

[Edit: You'll have to try much harder than that. The game is a point-and-click puzzle game similar to games like the Hapland series. If you're really stuck, try looking at one of the letter solutions in the walkthrough to get a feel for what the game expects of you. -Jay]

Still no G. So if i am to e-mail JIG to check out the configuration what details am I sending? My browser details I presume?

I can't get the G to light in FF or IE 8

Reply

Still no G after that comment either. So I'm trying leaving a comment using FF this time. Also vaccine in an earlier post suggested that JIG works better with IE6.... oh my god no. It is awful. Sometimes the page loads up wrong, sometimes not at all and it always takes a good 10 seconds before everything is finished loading compared to about 2 seconds tops with FF. For the love of god people.... Forget IE exists. There are lots of much better, faster and more reliable browsers out there than IE6.

Reply

Yeah whatever you did it seemed to work Jay. I now have the G :) Thankies.

Reply

Thanks Jay!

Reply

this is so stupid.. but where is the wand?

Reply

well i'm just confused on what to do. just saying the letters do not help me. there needs to be instructions like this:

"Here's what the letters mean. click rapidly."
or "click once" etc. just say "letter: letter 2:" etc just confuses me. if anyone can tell me what i;m doing wrong,i'd appreciate it.Thanks.

[Edit: The objective of the banner game is to get all the letters of C-a-s-u-a-l G-a-m-e-p-l-a-y lit. To do that you will have to click on things in the banner to solve the puzzles. There is a puzzle for each letter of Casual Gameplay. Beyond that, please consult the walkthrough for instructions on what you must do to light each letter. -Jay]

[Thanks! :) There are a lot of us here that work hard at being awesome, so it's really nice to see people appreciating what we do. :) -Jay]

Finally finished it!

Been visiting the site for years now but only just signed up...

to get the G! Sneaky!

Anyway, now that I am signed up to comment figured I might as well pass on some helpful info to anyone having trouble with..

..the jaytrix maze.

Got so fed up with the maze that I ended up drawing a map for it: it's basically a 15X15 square with a spiral wall in the middle (the only entrance/exit of which is about halfway up the right hand side of the maze) & afew smaller walls thrown in for good measure. The 1st time I did it, the star was in a clearing in the top left corner of the maze (if it doesn't seem to be there, you might still be inside the inner spiral).
Also, I think it started me in the bottom right corner, so just keep going left and then keep going up & you should come to it!

Tried it a 2nd time and the star had moved to the innermost part of the spiral. Hopefully it will be in one of these places for you.

Hope this helps people, I couldn't find any similar info when I was stuck on this part!

Great work on the site Jay! Cheers!

This may or may not be a comment to get the G.

Oh, and yeah, as mentioned above me, there isn't any sound. We need sound for the letter.
