KarmenPonPon HouseLittle ponpon house on the sea, what puzzles have you inside waiting silently for me?

Adorably chic and perfectly round, you lure me inside without making a sound.

I see shells of blue and red, clocks and plants, but why, do tell, is that doll on the bed?

How one into madness you send, is it simply the mystery? Or just how quickly it ends?

The PonPon House is an adorable point-and-click adventure from the Japanese game design group, Orange Biscuit. Short and sweet, this one isn't likely to take up much time or energy. However, with the soothing background sounds of a gentle sea combined with elegant scenery, the game is more like a journey through a landscape painting rather than an adventure.

Thankfully, this game does not require any pixel hunting. As you mouse over an area, the cursor will change, revealing a clickable location. Some items can be picked up and combined with other items. While the game is not too difficult to figure out, it doesn't include much English instruction. This can create a few awkward moments. For instance, it appears at first that there will be no inventory; an object can just sit wherever you leave it. So, later, when objects do go into the inventory, they'll seem to simply disappear. To open the inventory, simply click on the lettering in the upper right of the playing screen. The other awkward moment in this game comes at the rather ambiguous end. There is a typical "I've escaped!" sequence, but afterwards, you can continue manipulating at your leisure. The whole end is a bit fishy, if you ask me.

Even with its minor quirks and short length, the PonPon House makes the perfect getaway for Spring Break. Besides, unlike a beach house in Cancun, this one is free.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

PonPon House Walkthrough:

On the Pier

  • Not much to see here, really. You can go to the left, to the end of the pier, to see a fish jump out of the water.

  • Go down the pier to the house. The door is locked, but you can circle around it to the left and peek in each window along the way.

  • The bucket next to the door has a key in it. Click on it once, to remove it from the bucket, then drag it to the door to enter.

In the House

  • You see a weird central pillar, lots of toys and furniture, and a ceiling fan that's out of your reach.

    • Look to your left; there's someone sleeping on a couch, with an alarm clock on a shelf nearby.

    • Look under the couch to see a yellow slip of paper with a number on it. Make a note of this number and the color (it may change between games). Click on it to enlarge it, then again to go back.

  • Click on the shelf. There's a white slip of paper with another number on it. Make a note of the number (click on the slip to pull it out).

  • Go to the right. Click on the box of shells hanging on the wall. There's a green slip with another number on it. Enlarge it as before, make a note, then go back.

  • Go right again. Another slip is on the central table, pink this time.

  • Another right, then look at the toybox. Lift up the ball, and you should see a line of colored dots. Click on the line to enlarge it, and make a note of the colors and what order they're in.

  • Go right until you see the ice-cream cone. Lift up the top and take the orange; you'll see a blue slip with a number on it. Click on the slip twice to replace the cone.

  • Click on the clock above the cone. Do so again to turn it around, then a third time to open the back. Remove the battery. Replace the cover to go back.

  • Look at your notes. You should have six colors, and one number noted for each. Put them in the same order as the line of dots you saw near the toybox.

    • I can tell you what I had, but I can't promise that it won't change. (Odds are it doesn't, since I played twice with the same combination.)

    • Are you sure you want me to give this part away?

    • All right. It's 6 8 1 3 5 *. The last digit is an asterisk. Spoil-sport. ;)

  • Turn around until you can see the small box on the shelf between the shell-display and the oversized Marshmellow Peeps. Click on this box.

    • You should see a keypad. Click again and the word "RESET" should appear. Type in the code you gained from the various colored slips. The box will open revealing a remote.

  • Turn around until you can see the TV. Zoom in on it, then use the remote on it. Make a note of the time you see on the screen.

  • Turn back around to the alarm clock (next to the sleeper).

    • Click on the clock to turn it around, then again to open the back. Insert the battery. Replace the cover.

    • Use the + and - keys to change the time to the time you saw on the TV. The heart on top will start glowing. Click on it and the alarm will go off, waking the sleeper.

    • When the sleeper gets up, turn to follow. It (he? she?) will brush its hair (?), then unlock the door. Click on the door to step out.

    • The sleeper decides to go fishing. Click on the fish at the bottom to pull up something (a boot, a squid, a dead fish, etc.) until you catch a real fish.

That was pretty fun. I wish I knew what was being said at the end.

Reply

Cute game - it need more chapters! Finally a point and click that I could beat!!

Reply

I must be missing something. What am I supposed to do with the clock? In Japanese it says: "Pressing the button will move the clock forward 5 minutes. Holding down the button will continuously advance the time." Great but, why do I want to change the time on the clock? :-)

Reply

This is cute!
One number seemed more difficult. Here's a hint:

Have you checked under the bed?

I don't see what you mean by ambiguous? After getting out

and catching the fish

, there's a text "Congratulations you've escaped" how is that ambiguous?

Reply

never mind about the clock...had to do something else first.

The ending text in Japanese doesn't add much:

the little fish icon says "go fishing" and the character is saying "mukyu!" which is just a cute sound with no meaning.

Whenever you come across an adjustable clock in a point and click game, it's quite likely that a specific time needs to be set on the clock in order for you to proceed.

Nice little one. I liked it.

This game was really nicely done and quite cute too. A bit easy, but short enough that it doesn't consume an hour or so of my time like the other ones do :P
I really enjoyed the music. Very soothing^^~

Two criticisms on this game.

First, you end up with an item in your inventory with no clear purpose, nothing that shows you how it's used, and no consequences for not using it. I'm referring to the

orange,

which a lot of people have been asking about.
Second, once you figure out the

time to set on the alarm clock,

you can skip 75% of the game by

getting the battery first, and setting the clock.

Now if only we could post spoiler tags without them appearing on their own line. :P

Reply

Sorry, that's just how spoiler tags work. =/

This was cute! I just had no idea that

the remote control

was what it was...I definitely resorted to spoilers just to know what the heck I was meant to do with that.

Merricat March 19, 2008 8:58 PM

That was very sweet. :)

The closeups were a little misleading. I'm used to all closeups in P&C games leading to clues/information, but many of these were just for show. Beautifully done, especially the crystal chime and cut-crystal heart.

Reply
hulakitty March 19, 2008 9:08 PM

I haven't played yet but the 'snowman' plus orange probably a "kagami mochi" (two glutinous rice cakes with an orange on top) which is a traditional Japanese New Year's offering/decoration.

Reply

My goodness, there's a few folks here who apparently missed their nap.

You can't

set the clock

without

turning on the tv

, which you can't get without solving the other puzzle -- so no, you can't really skip 75% of the game...unless you use the walkthrough, which sort of negates the whole idea of figuring out an escape game. (Yeah, we all use hints on occasion, but using it to do an endrun around the puzzle is, well, not really solving it, is it?)
Not a big deal if you didn't find a use for the

orange

...nice explanation by hulakitty, by the way.

Great game, questionable poetry.

Neat little game. :)

It's a nice mixture of pre-rendered 3D objects, 2D graphics and still images, making this game somewhat reminiscent to Riven and Myst. The animation, however, feels like it was done by a sequence of still images rather than using regular sprite animation. This is especially apparent in the doll's movement at the end.

Nice as the graphics may be, it's the absence of pixel-hunting that makes gameplay better than that of the many mediocre games in this genre. It could be improved, however. I'm missing the ability to fully backtrack my steps at any point, a standard feature in most point-and-click games.

For instance, once I find an object, often I can't just go back to the main scene; I have to click through the entire zooming sequence before I'm allowed back.

Another example: once I open the door, there is no way back outside. Contrast this with another "explore the building" game, Covert Front, where I can go in and out of the house at any time.

Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable five-ten minute game. Thanks for the review, Karmen! :)

beautiful graphics! awesome game! well done!

Reply

Has this not been posted before? I'm confused, since I have already played it and did not realise I had any other informative source for games except JIG... odd. It's cute, short, easy and fun... all good for my coffee break.

Reply

It was cute.. but too easy. Never did figure out what the orange was for or where the yellow number was, but finished it anyway.

Reply

JustMe, You really can skip a lot of the game. For instance in my case,

in looking around the room, I found the battery and some of the numbers. I didn't find the dot pattern, open the safe, turn on the tv or even find the orange. I found the battery and skipped to the clock, and turned the hands of the clock until it did something. I used guess and check and didn't do half the game.

Reply

Thank you so much for posting a new room-escape game! I tend to go in a withdrawl stage when I have to search the older games tagged "escape"!
I haven't played it yet (just too happy that it is even posted), but it looks amazing!

scoobysnack39 March 20, 2008 12:15 PM

Cute. Probably one of the easiest point-and-clicks I've ever played, but still kind of fun. My only issue is that it's a little dark on my screen.

Regarding Mordsmith's comment about simply playing with the clock until you find the right time -- what's the fun in that? Part of the fun is the challenge in finding the clues and figuring out how to use them. Let's see you guess your way through the point-and-click game Vision (one of my recent favorites).

Reply

This is one I actually finished on my own, which is rare for these kinds of games.

Reply

Very cute and VERY VERY easy.

Reply

I like how the screens overlap each other; it not only makes it extremely easy to navigate, but it gives you a natural feeling of space. Other escape games could definitely learn from it.

Reply

Note: I think 'ponpon' is the Japanese reference to the character's ball on top. Anyone have a better suggestion?

Reply

The game was a bit easy, but I loved the graphics. Short but sweet!

Reply

how did you get there? i mean, there is no way to dry land and no boat! ethier s/he swam (unlikely, no land in sight for miles.) or was born there(even more unlikely, since the only life forms there are you and the doll.)I WANT A PLOTLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People have already translated some of the Japanese text. Here's the rest of it - spoiler tagged, just in case.

The arrows

(^, ) say "look up," "move left," and "move right." (pretty obvious)

The box in the upper right says

"found objects" i.e., it's your inventory. And above grayed-out objects it says "used."

The safe

just says "reset button."

When you

turn on the TV, the pig says "It's 8:55!" just in case you didn't notice the time in the upper right.

The clock,

after you put in the battery, says, "Push the button, it moves five minutes. If continuously pushed (held down), it moves (continuously)."

Once outside

the little fish says "Catch fish."

And by the way,

a tangerine on top of two rice cakes is a traditional decoration in Japan. It doesn't seem to do anything if you put the tangerine on the rice cakes (two round flat things in the middle of the room), though.

And as someone else pointed out,

"MuKyu" doesn't mean anything. It's just cartoon talk.

First "escape" game I did without a walkthrough.

Oh yeah...

the orange goes on top of the snowman looking thing that you see when you enter the house.

This one was weird:

#1: It was easy enough for me to do.

#2: It was really short.

#3: It was predictable.

Explanation: (may include spoilers)

Are you sure you want to continue?

Alright.
#1: I'm sure from this point that you have figured out that I'm horrible at escape-the-room genre games.
#2: I completed the whole thing in around five minutes. Usually, if I complete it, a usual escape the room game will take me around thirty minutes.
#3: It was predictable because when I found the eight card, I thought, oh, great, another game with passwords and codes and all that other junk. When I saw the second number, the safe, and the series of dots on the wall, I realized that all it was was a simple, "find the order game". They are almost all alike. The other reason it was predictable was that when I was punching the almost completed number into the safe, I realized I was missing the yellow number. Instead of finding it, I decided to try my luck, and punched five. What do you know? It was the number I would have picked logically if I were making this game.
Not to be negative, but I didn't like this game that much.:*(

Reply

Just a joke, Karmen. Somehow the verse still seemed appropriate to the game :).

Reply

You can put the orange on top of the statue in the middle of the room. I don't think it does anything though :)

Reply

Nice game. Pretty easy. One question, though. I got this random orange from the ice cream cone. Did that have some purpose, or was it just there to confuse me? xD

A cute way to while away a coffee break.

But I was unable to use the

tv remote. I could not move the remote from the inventory whilst in any view of the room. I was able to make it send out a signal whilst in the inventory.

Shame I had to use the walkthrough to bypass this problem.
Any one else have this problem?

Reply

I couldn't use the

TV remote

either. I couldn't get it out of my inventory and just clicking on it while

zoomed in on the TV

didn't do me any good.

Ah well, cute game anyways.

Reply

Well, that was cute. And I didn't even need the walkthrough. But I looked it up anyway just for the code

which didn't change

I probably didn't even need it since I put the batteries into the clock before looking at it.

Reply

In honour of finishing one of these without a walkthrough, I made an account!!! woot!!

Anyway, very easy, very cute - but it wasnt so much 'escape the room' as 'help the cute sleeping thing wake up and escape the room'.

Very sweet =)

cute game..but i thought the ending was creepy. this is because in my culture there's a type of ghost called "pochong" who is basically a dead person whose shroud wasn't loosened after being put in the grave. this "pochong" basically looks like that. a person wrapped in a white cloth with a round knot on his head and hopping everywhere.
it was cute before that part though =D
