Ninja, Make a Roll!

Being a penguin ninja is very hard, because your biggest concern is to keep the emperor happy. And when he decides he needs a roll cake, well... Ninja, Make a Roll Cake! In Detarame Factory's adorable point-and-click puzzle adventure, you'll need to travel around hunting for ingredients to make the perfect roll cake... or at least, the perfect roll cake if you want to get the best ending. Just click to interact with things onscreen when the cursor changes as it passes over something, and travel around the map to find the things you need, and solve puzzles to make progress. The whole concept is very Isamu Carre, which was also made by Detarame Factory, but Ninja, Make a Roll Cake! thankfully has an English translation, so you don't need to brute force anything or guess at what the text says. Of course, being a ninja in a world populated by sentient fruits and vegetables, you aren't just going to be able to go to the supermarket for what you need, and instead you'll need to figure out creative ways to find (or subdue) the ingredients you need. It's extremely cute, and also a surprisingly robust chunk of itty-bitty adventure, though to say you'll need to think outside the box and examine every bit of every thing is sort of an understatement. So what are you waiting for? Royalty is starving. Ninja, Make a Roll Cake!

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Walkthrough by location(Not necessarily in order):

Starting Point

Click the chest to the left when
starting the game to get ninja stars. Then click
the door on the right to slide it open and acquire a
crystal ball.

Frog Cave

Once in the cave you will notice a
totem and treasure chest surrounded by a barrier.
Before dealing with those, click the rock in the
rear of the cave to uncover a coin. Pick it up.
If you have the item from the small statue you
will be able to move the totem pieces around
with it. You may have notice the leaves on the
outside of the cave. That is the order you have
to hit the totem in. Specficially, the leaves
on the right mean you have to hit it from the
right and the leaves on the left mean you have
to hit it from the left. So the order is R,R,L,R,L.

Once you have the totem in place the barrier around
the chest will dissapear. Open it to get an "Iron Crow" (Claw?).

Deeper into the frog cave is a door that won't open with symbols
on the ground and wall. What you want to do here is match the colors
on the floor to the colors on the wall. So sky blue in the four corners
and yellow in a cross. But there is no green. I have a question for you:
What color do you get when you mix yellow and blue? That's right, green.
So make sure they are in the center on each wall as well as matched up
to their patterns. Then click on the door to open it. Go inside. If you
have the item from the Big Statue you will be able to skate across the
water here and grab the Golden Ball on the other side.

Cherry Blossom Forest

There will be three grapes standing
on top of each other here. They're blocking your
way, so you will need an item. Specfically - the
ninja stars from the beginning. Click the grapes
when you have those to make them go *POOF!*

Pick them up to get blueberries. Next to them
is a coin, so pick that up too. ...Huh? That
sound is familiar. Moving on.. if you have the
item from inside the hut you can catch the caterpillar.

Blue House

There is a pink penguin here asking
for three coins to open a treasure chest. If
you have the coins, give them to her by using
the coins on the chest to get the hood.

After getting the hood and coming back, a second
chest will appear and she will only want one coin
for it this time. If you're willing to spare the
cash (which you should, cheapskate) click your coins
and use them on the chest one more time to get the soap.

Once the soap is used a third item will be available and
the girl penguin will want two coins for it this time. Talk
about steep prices. You should be able to afford it though, so
go ahead and buy this last item. You will get fresh cream
for the roll you want to make.

Hut

If you have the item from the well you can cut
the wheat here. Also, if you happened to get
the item from the penguin in the well you can
enter the hut. Inside is a chicken who wants a
caterpillar and a net. Along with a shade and some
letters in a picture on the wall. Once the caterpillar
is caught feed it to the chicken. It will caw. Leave
the hut and go back inside to collect some eggs.

Check that picture again. You can actually click
the corners to move it. If you have spoken to the
penguin in the well then you know the code. Go get
that and then click the corners here to spell out the
appropriate word. ("Happy")

Pull the pink cord to get the machine to start going.
Place some wheat inside of it to turn it into flour for
your roll cake.

Small Statue

The first thing you might notice
here is the woodpecker here and the strange
devices. Before that though, pick up the giant
hammer laying on the ground. If you have the item
from inside the hut, place it on top of the baby
statue's head and he will be very happy to not have
a woodpecker pecking at his head anymore. He will
be holding out a sword in the scabbard which you can
take. Just make sure to click it one more time to take
it OUT of the scabbard.

Behind the baby statue is a rock with some odd shapes and
symbols on it. If you have the item from the Hill, it will
provide you with the clues you need to crack the combination
on the rock. The hint in correlation with it is at the bottom
of the baby statue where the colors are. Circles=Columns Lines=Rows.

If you are having too much of a hard time figuring it out, the combination
is:

Triangle with #, Hexagon with &, Star with +

After cracking the password it will reveal a chest. Open it
to get a magic scroll.

Hill

There is a peach blocking your way here with
some kind of... clamp tool. You don't want to
get the clamps so you will need the equipment
from the Small Statue before you can get past
him. Once you do, you will slice and dice him
into a smaller version of himself. Pick him up
and turn him into an ingredient for your roll
cake.

Head forward and there will be a chest guarded
by two lion statues. If you try to open the chest
the statue on the right will breathe fire. Not good.
If you have the item from the Big Statue, insert it
into the lion statue without and orb. They will breathe
fire and ice together to open your way through. Open
the chest to get a blue scroll.

Tower

There is another fruit guarding our passage through here.
If you have the scroll from the Small Statue you can use it
to catch the banana on fire and collect him as another ingredient.
On the ground where the banana was standing is what looks like a trap
door with three circles on it. You may immediately notice that the symbols
look like something we have seen before. The sun, snowflake, and electricity
symbols. Which is exactly what we need to open this. The password goes:

Sun=Top-Left, Snowflake=Top-Right, Electricity=Bottom-Left

Once it's open there is some round thing revealed underneath it. Click on it to...
...WOOOAAAHHH!!! You will be shot up to the top of the tower. Go inside. There is
a scroll on the wall inside the room here that you can lift up to reveal a tiny pink
penguin. You can click on him for a hint about the puzzle on the floor.
Also, take note of the image on the scroll. That's right. You can combine
your magic scroll and sword to get the... FIRE SWORD! Now we're in business.

As for the puzzle... the hint indicates the number of dashes and angle they're
in on each letter. If you can't figure out the password it's:

HHNA

Now we can go down the stairs for... one more puzzle. :\
Oh well. At least this one looks simple. Argh... what do you mean
the order of the animals didn't work? Try entering from the other
side then. If you REALLY can't figure this one out- the order is:

Right button, Middle button x2, Right button, Left button x2

The panel should open up to reveal what should be your second-to-last ingredient: Sugar.
Collect and make your way out of here. On your way out you will encounter a pineapple. If you made your sword
into a fire sword as I indicated earlier you should have no trouble with
him. Slice and dice him for one more ingredient for your roll cake.

Big Statue

This big statue is sleeping. Notice it's holding
something brown behind it's arms. Grab it to get
Floating Sandals. If you have the crystal from
the starting point earlier, go ahead and place
it in the pedestal here. If you have the item
from the frog cave, place it in the big statue's
head and it will shoot eye lasers at the crystal
ball turning it into an ice crystal. Pick it up.

Well

There is a kiwi guarding the well here.
If you have the item from the Blue House
you will be able to defeat it and take it's
sickle along with collect the kiwi ingredient
for the cake. It should be noted here now that
you have the sickle you can go back and cut big
patches of grass from earlier. Be sure to do that.

At the bottom of the well is a stuck penguin and
a coin behind the vines. Take the coin and save the
penguin or save the penguin first. Either order, doesn't
matter. We ninjas aren't known for our moral code. If you
bought the second item from the Blue House (soap) use it
here to free the penguin. Talk to him and he will give you
a key.

After freeing the penguin and coming back, he will be taking
a bath in a bucket at the bottom of the well. He says "Happy".
This is actually the code for the portrait inside the hut.

Bridge

There is a strawberry guarding the path here.
If you have the item from the frog cave you can
get past here. If you don't, go get that first.
Use the claw on the strawberry and pick up the
...strawberry it drops along with the coin. You
can now move to locations across the bridge.

Secret Ending

If you talk to the cute penguin in the tower one more time
on your way out she will tell you that she wants a branch
with cherry blossom petals on it. You know where to go for
that one. Just take your sickle and cut off the branch from
the tree and bring it back here when you've got time. She will
give you a fishing rod in exchange. You can then take that fishing
rod to get a fish out of the frog cave. The penguin at the bottom
of the well will want frozen fish so we will have to take the fish
to the lion statue that can breathe ice to freeze it. Take it back
to the penguin in the well to be given a shell. Go back to the Blue
House and this time the proprietor will want a blue shell to open
a chest. Accepting foreign currency now, are we? Use the shell on
the chest to collect matcha- a secret ingredient for your roll cake.

Cute game. I enjoyed playing it. :)

That was SO adorable! I love escape games with lots of different areas to explore. Pretty straightforward and easy to follow clues for the puzzles. Plus it had lots of penguins. I don't know that I could have asked for more.

I couldn't agree more. Really cute and fun! :)

Although I felt a little bad for the caterpillar... :/
