nightmaresadventures.jpgJohnBNightmares, the Adventures is a series of four episodic point-and-click adventures created by Sarbakan for AOL Kids. Aimed at a slightly younger audience, each installment is a short, colorfully drawn game where you must try and help the young Victor vanquish his nightmares. The catch is that you only have a limited number of moves to win each episode, putting just a little pressure on your puzzle solving skills.

Navigation is easy in Nightmares, the Adventures, simply click the puffy arrows to visit different locations on each screen. Items usually look a little brighter than their surroundings, making them easy to spot and nab. Figuring out how to use them and in what situations is where the challenge dwells, and with the constant reminder that Victor's nightmare is closing in, you don't have time to dawdle.

Because the games are aimed at kids, the Nightmares episodes won't pose much of a challenge to seasoned point-and-click adventurers. There's even an in-game hint system that all but spells out exactly what you should do. But the top-notch visuals, great voice acting, genuinely spooky atmosphere, and lack of pixel hunting make them entertaining for just about anyone.

OMG! I remember playing these episodes when they were still in French!! This sure does bring back memories...

Sarbakan is easily one of the best online game makers, or at least was. Goodnight Mr Snoozleberg is obviously a classic, although I do not think that it has a review on here, although one would be somewhat redundant. The slightly difficult to find Arcane and Steppenwolf were also superbly made.

Reply

Yup, great games. The animation on nightmares is great though.

I like these games, but I am stuck on the third one:

Got everything except the cockroach in the jar, the right arm of the snowman, and the snow shovel.

Any help would be great!

Reply

arrgh! I'm in episode one and I can't figure out how to get the key! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Reply

ahhhh

the top of the tree!

Reply

Just finished it...what a great series! but I have a question about episode #4:

I'm assuming you can reclaim something Rob R. steals from you, but I can't figure out how...did anyone figure that out?

Reply

Goda Netoan:

The snowman arms are on opposite pages of the book.

Once the snowman has both arms move HIM to the other picture to get the shovel.

And the shovel gets the cockroach in the jar out.

Je:

Have you got the remote controlled bat yet?

Wonderful art. I love these cartoony games. Although I think the "time-constraints" or however you wanna call them are rather unintuitive and quite constrictive. It's OK if the Devil comes when you do something you're not supposed to, but when it constantly appears whatever you do it actively disencourages exploration which I don't know is such a good thing in a kids point-and-click adventure game.

Nevertheless, quite a fun little distraction.

To get the key in Episode 1

Get the scythe from the statue in the first screen.

Use it on the bat in the cobweb in the tomb to the right of the key tree.

Use the remote control bat on the top of the tree.

Reply

Cute and fun, although I got a bit stuck on the fourth one. Got it in the end though!

I agree with the comment about the devil appearing if you 'explore' the environment too much. That put me off clicking except when things were really obvious, so I missed things that would have otherwise been found.

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post in JayIsGames.com
I have done nothing the entire summer but playing games from this website. I'm really glade I did that :)

I have solved episode 1:

Episode 1:

- Pick up the newspaper "see the photo"
- pick up the bone
- pick up the thing in the statu's hand

go right
- try to take the key "the tre won't let you"
- go to the right room open the 3rd tomb, pick up the green thing
- go to the left room cut the net to free the remote control bat, go back
- use the bat with the tree
- take the key and go back:)

The fat guy is standing there, give him the green thing

go left
- pick up the bin
- give the dog the bone "so that it doesn't jump on Victor"
- go to the room on the right side open the tomb, take the banjo "or what ever" and pick up the flash
- go to the other room, use the flash
- poor sad guy set him free you have the key go back

back again!

- give the bin to the clown
- give the banjo to victor

and that's it :)

WELL DONE

Ahhhh this is super cute, but I'm hella stuck on Level Two.

What I have:

Wooden Planks,
the Vine
Four Coconuts,
A Net,
a Bucket of Water.
So far, I've placed the Net beneath the Orange snake dude, but the more experimental clicking I do, the closer the nightmare comes. This is far from my first run through this level, and a hint would be greatly appreciated, as I keep getting stuck here, unable to harm the vaccuum cleaners.

These are great examples of a point-and-click themed game. Not only does it seem to direct mostly towards kids, but certainly appeals to adults. This in my all time favorite games!

"He walked the lands in search of his destiny. He was Goda Netoan!"

Reply

It looked good, and the animation was charming but I really really didn't like the limit on things you can click on before the game ends. While I judge my skills to be akin to that of a five-year-old, I really can't understand how the average child could complete this game unaided or even with significant help. It's not good for a point and click game to place limits on the amount of pointing and clicking that can go on. After the second try I gave up, which is a shame because it looked very promising. :(

Reply

The review mentioned an in-game hint system... how exactly do I access it?

Reply

The hint system?

You have to position your mouse EXACTLY above the big button labeled "HINT", and while your mouse pointer hovers above you must press your left mouse button.

Kinda tricky, but doable.

Reply

Btw I tested this game on my 9-year old cousin who is familiar with point-and-click games (he finished Samorost almost entirely on his own).

He lost interest very quickly, courtesy of the devil. It is really an idiotic gameplay mechanism when you think about it.

Reply

What's with the sarcasm baba44713? It was a simple question.

Julian, the only in-game hint system is on episode 2.

Reply

I remember another series like this. The mechanics were very similar, but it was more Lovecraftian. Anyone happen to know what it is?

Karin M Designs September 9, 2007 4:48 AM

My almost 7 year old loves point and click games. She played this two or three times before she lost interest due to the 'click' constraints. I agree with the others who have said it's not an effective game mechanism.

Shame really, as it looked like fun.

Reply

The devil is in the... uh, game.

I didn't like him either, mainly because each cut scene takes too long, after the 10th time (esp when there is already a "boo!" animation beforehand, to signal failure). There have been other games that discourage mindless clicking everywhere, that were gentler about it. Getting the balance right is a tricky problem in game design.

To avoid running out of chances, there is a "save" button. You can get to a certain point, then save and explore. While this "solves" the problem, it is awkward in my opinion and adds complexity.

Many of the solutions are non-intuitive, so I had to use trial-and-error. And since some are invisibly activated by other changes in state (ie. they don't work beforehand, but there is no logical reason for this, it is just the programming), I have to try everything on each point multiple times. And, arbitrarily, not all solutions work - eg. only one torch is detachable.

These criticisms apply to all point-and-click games - it's not just this one.

HOWEVER, the game is beautifully drawn and animated; the voice-acting is very high quality (tho often inaudible, or at different volumes); and the characters are great, and the plots are interesting, surprising and amusing. The programming had no glitches (except sound effects can be retriggered before the previous one is finished).

Everything is well done, except the game-play for someone who doesn't already know the answers. I think this is the hardest aspect to get right, because the developers can't rely on their own intuitions (since they already know the answers, and can't understand why other people can't see them).

One solution is extensive user testing on the target audience (and observation of what they look at, click on and say to themselves - with no prompting from the observer) - or, to have some kind of genius sense of exactly what information the user has at each point, and to see things through their eyes. That's really, really hard to do. I bet Walt Disney would rock at it.

The art, spookiness and voice acting were the high points. The low point was when I was punished for doing the exploration I needed to do to get ahead. Maybe it's supposed to symbolize Victor running from the devil in his dreams until he finally figures out how to laugh in his face?

But for me, the "Devil" mechanic ran contrary to how these types of games were supposed to work, especially in episode 4:

Hmm, opening that last grille got me a key. Maybe if I open this one, I can fin- SNAKE!

Hi, the I just found out that there is a new victor's nightmare, number 5.. only to bad that it is in french :-(
It's very cool, it was difficult but I finished the game..:-D

(the text below needs to be in a spoiler tag, but I couldn't get it right) :-(
first when you see a little thing running around in one of the rooms try to collect it, you'll be needing it, then get the candle from the pumpkin,
then go down to the left.. to the next room.. click on the fotograph next to the miror, then find the differents between the mirror and the foto.. You'll get a note with ingredients for a poison.. then go left again into the kitchen get the key out of the jar on top of the fridge, then open the lock with the key and collect the lock.. then pick up the yellow fruit on the second selve.. then collect the pot with the tail between the dishes.. go one room back and light the fireplace (the wood) with the candle. than go back and follow the bread crums, the bread can me in the left or richt tower.. in the left tower collect the eyes of the odd one out (with the big eyes).. than go to the right tower, there you need to correct the mirrors, so the light falls on a small hole in the ground.. then put the thing that was running around in the hole.. it will poof into a big plant and distract the other one.. a new doorway will appear.. go there.. you'll see nine candles.. play the game untill al the candles are out.. then collect the candle wax.. then place the lock in the wheels turning on the right bottom, collect the battery.. then put the candle wax, the fruit, the eyes and the bread in the pot with the tail, then go back to the room with the fire, put the pot on the fire and you'll get a posion.. go to the left tower and give one of the frogs in the back the posion, don't know which one you need to try until you found the right one.. then get the remte control that the frog spittled on the floor.. also collect spittle with the pot.. then put the battery in the remote and go to the room with the fire.. trow the spittle on the fire and go up stairs.. there you can collect the other battery by making all the ghosts go away by clicking the candle on each ghost.. put the other battery in the remote and go to the place you started then click the remote on the flying black thing.. and the story will come to an end..
