Morning Room

If there was ever an escape game creator whose name inspired the exact opposite feels as it described, Neutral has got to be them, and Morning Room is here to pick you up... though despite never running around or deserting you, you might miss it if you blink. To play, just click to interact, though the cursor won't change to tell you when you can do so, and frustratingly some objects you need to interact with won't actually give any visual or aural feedback that doing so is correct. This is very much a mini escape, with just one screen to contend with (not counting various viewing angles), and some of the puzzles aren't quite as intuitive or inventive as you might be hoping. Still, Neutral's tidy design and the deceptively simple presentation hides one puzzle you'll need to wake up your brain for, so get cracking, and whet your appetite for a bigger game down the road!

Morning room Walkthrough

Puzzle 1: The broken plate

First of all, try to imagine the plate in the lower left corner as it was before it broke.

After that, turn the imaginary plate upside-down.

The answer is "PUSH Ehlg".
(Note that the 1 stands for l and not i.)

Push the letters "E h l g" on the "Eight o'clock" sign in that order.

Puzzle 2: The 5 pictures

Begin with finding the 5 numbers. There is one on each of the pictures hanging on the wall.
Some of them are hidden in the background, and you will have to move one of the frames as well.

The numbers are (left to right) :

264 252 091 194 738

Zoom in on the meal on the table. Move the donut by clicking on it to find a note with letters and numbers on it.

Each number from 0-9 responds to a letter/number in the upper row.

A - 0
2 - 1
C - 2
E - 3
I - 4
K - 5
L - 6
M - 7
S - 8
T - 9

Translate the number combination from the frames to a message:

clickcat22times

(-> Click cat 22 times)

Click the cat painting 22 times. (You will see when you have clicked enough)

Puzzle 3: The Black/White dots

Each row is meant to be a word where certain letters are represented by dots.

These words are the 5 meals on the table.

DONUT

CORN POTAGE

SALAD

EGG

TOASTS

The letters that are gone:

D U T

N P O

L A

E G G

T O S

Examine the middle painting.

Each row of dots is equal to one of the rows of the painting.

Put the rows as in the order on the painting.

(White - W, Black - B)

WBW - DUT
BBW - NPO
BW - LA
BWW - EGG
BWB - TOS

If you put these rows in order:

BWB - TOS
BWW - EGG
BBW - NPO
XBW - XLA
BWB - DUT

And if you read this horizontally, you get:

TENXDOGPLUSGOAT

(-> 10 x Dog + Goat)

Multiply the number on the dog painting with 10,
and add the number on the goat painting to it.

264*10+738=3378

Input 3378 in the box on the table.
Click on the key.

For those who don't want to use the walkthrough but are unfamiliar with japanese food:

The item in the bowl is

corn potage

Awful.

Starting in the dark (especially with a cursor that didn't change) made that plate almost impossible to find.

Welcome back, Neutral! I got a chill just seeing that beautiful wooden box. Clever and sweet minigame, just like that breakfast.

That's definitely a bagel! Not a

donut

I'm glad there's a walk-through, because obviously this makes sense to someone. And what's with the voting mushrooms not working?

Hard to believe this is a Neutral game. Not very intuitive at all.

That was hard!

I've never heard of corn potage...:(

It's funny, I am usually stumped by more visual clues but I really enjoyed this game and got out without a walk through.

This is true code breaking. I loved this.

Oh yay. I love Neutral's games and I've been waiting for more of them.

Neutral says she's been working on a full-length game for a while now... as much as I like her mini-games (though this one was disappointing), I confess I felt a bit let down after the rush I'd gotten from glimpsing the name in the tags.

I've got to say, I liked this one. The first puzzle annoyed me, since there isn't really any indication that the relevant thing is clickable, but after that it was nice to see some deeper puzzles in an escape game. I'm so used to escape game cliches that I can often pretty much click right through them, and it's satisfying to have to actually put the clues together to solve the codes for a change.

I don't know for sure that I would have solved the first puzzle if

the letters on the 8 o'clock sign had all responded to clicking

but I know that I would have tried a lot harder before going to the walkthrough. I think that aspect changed it from being a very cool and aha-moment-giving puzzle to being an annoying and (nearly) impossible one.

playing this game made me want to replay all the old neutral games. unfortunately, it appears the games are removed as I come up with a 404 error on every neutral game on this page. either that or the address has changed. can someone look into this? Thanks.

it's doing this with carmelgames as well. there might be others point and click companies going through this too so I hope you'll check on this. thanks.

I agree with Pheeze! I was super annoyed at first, but then after getting into the game I found the code breaking very satisfying! The only issue I had was making messy notes and confusing myself!

I found it beautifully intuitive and well put together. Doesn't matter that the cursor doesn't change as there is no pixel hunting. I had heard of

potage

before so that helped, other than that everything is right there before your eyes.

This game was pretty far out even for Neutral.
Unconventional, to put it lightly.

I looked at Neutrals full Japanese website, and I don't think she made this game. It said it was made by someone else or something like that. I think she may have helped design it or something.

I love Neutral (Mya's) games. This one was short and sweet but well worth the effort working out the first devilish clue.
