JamesMining Truck 2Racing down a mine's railway track with your precious cargo bouncing around in the carts dragging behind you is the kind of activity you can only pull off in a game. Apart from the horrendous implications to the operation's bottom line, plowing face-first into the ground during an unfortunate derailing is sure to provide a one-way ticket ride to somewhere else. In this game that happens too... but your only penance is to tap the [R] button. That and a case of slowly-rising blood pressure in developer AntKarlov's gravity-bound physics arcade game Mining Truck 2.

Calling a game bad for your health might sound like a negative quality, but it's not (unless, of course, you count your health into the equation). In the case of a game that loves physics, frustration is often part of the deal, because success is brought upon by being patient, accurate and learning to love gravity's unpredictable ways. Control your truck with the [arrow] keys; [up] accelerates while [down] puts on the brakes, and [left] and [right] are used to help balance. The [spacebar] drops your goods onto the back of your truck.

Each of the ten mines have three objectives to achieve; get to the end within a specified time, deliver certain types of goods, crash your carts, make a required number of coins, etc. The coins are the real means to an end here, used to upgrade the aspects of your mine truck. Power, traction, stronger cart links and different types of carts are all bought with coins, paid out for the goods you manage to deliver as well as from the time left once you complete a level. Coins balance the game: you can access the later levels once you buy a certain type of cart, while the coins to buy it with are made every time you finish a level. Achieving objectives lead indirectly to a lot more money, but if you are extremely patient you'll be able to afford the full ensemble of upgrades.

Mining Truck 2Analysis: Mining Truck 2 at first looks like the kind of game where you have to race along a track as fast as possible, all while maintaining your center of balance. It does this to some degree; at higher speeds your engine cart does bounce around and leave the ground at the end of inclines, while some tricky parts require a bit of balancing. But that's only one side to the challenge. The second, harder part is carrying goods. Behind your engine dangle trailers, differing depending on the type of load you have to bear. Crates, logs, bags, minerals and (beady-looking) oil make up the spectrum of items. Naturally your employers are cheap (they did hire one idiot who will race a mining convoy, instead of getting a few slow but reliable drivers), so you don't get to tie your goods down either.

The real appeal, apart from the upgrades, lies in nailing the objectives, as well as finding the treasure chest on each level. Chests give out awards, from the useless (a car horn) to the indispensable (protective helmet) and advantageous (turbo boost). To reach the objectives, you will eventually need some of the upgrades. Some challenges in Mine Truck 2 require a dose of patience and a good knowledge of the level (since multiple paths feature almost in all of them). Fortunately the quaint soundtrack and exceptional graphics give it the kind of window dressing that turns a cold place cozy. There are moments of frustration, especially scenes involving the sometimes-inept cranes, but that's all part of the physics game experience anyway. In other words, take it with a pinch of salt. The taste of success is worth it.

Tips for Mining Truck 2:

  • You can only lose a level by crashing and every time you finish you should make some form of money. If you need upgrades, focus on getting cargo there. The cheapest cargo is crates, then barrels, bags, minerals and best-paying is oil.

  • You get a coin for every ten seconds left on the clock.

  • Bags are best caught with open trailers. The mechanical claws have trouble reaching them in mine carts.

  • Once the mechanical claw moves a load, move forward to avoid it getting caught on your remaining cargo.

  • If an objective says 'Deliver goods in x seconds' it is achievable as long as you deliver something that level considers 'goods'. Exceptions are when the game asks for ALL of something.

  • Don't be afraid to backtrack - many goals can only be achieved by going back a forth a few times in the level.

  • Explore the levels for other types of cargo, which can bring you much more cash.

  • [Spacebar] activates everything in the game, including the ramps. Keep an eye out for big, wobbly ramps - they are also affected.

  • Some of the treasure items are very useful - it's worth your time finding and recovering them.

Thanks, James, for the guide!

The cranes. What the hell, the cranes. I finish a level perfectly, cue the crane, and it drops a box on my head. The floppy physics of the level and the cart itself I can understand as the challenge, but is there any reason the cranes have to be inept when I can't control them?

I found the game started lagging after a while of playing.

The suction device can also suck the driver up into the processing machine - you don't get any gold however (it does spit out his skeletal remains).

And speaking of remains, you can also collect some bones and convert those into gold as well.

I managed to get all achievements and treasures.
The "Get all oil" i by far the trickiest. The trick is to drive as slow as you can and not make any sudden movements. Ease the cart up and down the ramps.

It took me around 20 tries to get it.

BTW, even though I hated the game at first and stopped playing after 15 minutes, it kept pulling me back.
You really have to get proficient to get all stars, its a shame that there is no real end to the game - you get everything and that's it.

Sure, there are a couple of annoying glitches but the gameplay and graphics more than make up for it :)

Seems like a really good game with two major flaws:
- that ***** crane at the end: why does it need to be so slooooooow and, of course, stupid. The crane alone almost kills the game. Perhaps a nice idea: make the crane upgradeable too.
- why do you lose a cart so quickly? i've upgraded the connections twice and still, with the least shock, i lose one or two carts?!
- too bad that reaching objectives is only rewarded by advancing game levels (would be nice if you got extra coins for it)

I'll keep playing, hoping that some more upgrades will ease the pain.

This reminds me of those arcade skill tester things. Even if you think you've got that claw perfectly lined up...

I played it once on another site, and I had this really weird bug that I had never seen happen in any other game of this type. The crane deposited my cargo, and the crane stayed stuck to my truck, and I drove away with it attached to it, and due to the physics, it actually obstructed my driving on parts of the level. Did not exactly make me want to play the game again after encountering a bug like that so soon in the game.

This game is fantastic! I felt I needed to say this after giving 5 stars :P

Too bad that in order to play the bonus mission I would have to replay the whole game in their website (I thought it would recognize somehow my progress)

I found this game too frustrating.

Good game! :)

Jay...
there is another key.. "D"
Unhooks 1 cart per press.

It gives the speed needed for time goals.

evolverr (or anyone else who has done this) - how do you get the treasure on level 5? from what I can tell you have to

destroy one of the bridges by repeatedly driving over it but every time I try that I wind up crashing - I can't seem to make it to the lower rails in one piece - much less with a cart attached to haul the treasure

at first i like this, but when I can't understand how the balancing works and my worker suddenly die in middle of transporting (im just waiting the silly crane to get my stuffs), this game get my nerve.

Reply

How on earth are you suposed to get the level 5 chest? I can see it underground, with no access path...?

I've tried breaking through a bridge to get down there, but that doesn't end well....

Fun game, but it would be a lot more enjoyable if it weren't for that crane. Not only is it so persnickety about picking things up, but I've even had it pick up two of my objects and toss them up top with no problem, only to have the two objects get jammed at the opening on top of the coin machine. It caused me to miss my goal on the level and forced me to replay it. This game would be so much fun if it weren't hamstrung by such a tedious and seemingly unnecessary issue.

Regarding the Level 5 treasure chest-

There's a bridge further down the track which looks like a normal bridge, but can be lowered by pressing spacebar like a normal track switch.

Reply

level 5 by hitting space bar on the second bridge right when you go on it, it will collapse leaving a ramp. You might not get it the first time because there are multiple places where it can "break".

What does the treasure chest on level 5 reward you with?
