JohnBmakeitgood.gifMake It Good is a dark, noir-esque detective mystery (interactive fiction) from Fail-Safe author Jon Ingold. You are cast in the role of a down-on-his-luck detective struggling to solve a murder case or risk losing his job. Moving about a complete, living world, you'll turn over every potted plant, scrutinize every room, and question every character as you attempt to stitch together shards of information to discover just what happened.

The story begins sitting in your car just outside a typical suburban dwelling. Thoughts of losing your job float through your head, while a nearby bottle of whiskey quietly beckons your attention. Jack Draginam, husband, accountant, guy who actually employs a maid, has been murdered. No leads, just a bloody body and a lot of suspicious people. It's time to untangle this mess and get some answers.

It doesn't take long for you to realize Make It Good is much more than finding clues and putting them in the right order. It's about picking up on subtle hints, whether they be nervous looks from non-player characters, noises in the background, or curious placements of furniture in the room, then following that lead and prying more information out of it. Each clue-strand offers a number of new leads you could pursue, creating this beautifully organic structure that doesn't feel like solving a linear puzzle, it feels like exploring a story from the inside out.

As far as playing the game goes, most of the commands you'll use will be familiar to anyone who has played interactive fiction before. Moving around the environment involves simple N, E, S, W commands, manipulating objects is straightforward, and asking people questions is a breeze. The real game is in the subtext, as nothing you do shows an obvious next step to take. Because of this, Make It Good can be a brutally difficult game to play, so make sure you're ready to get involved before you click that link.

Analysis: Make It Good is a superb piece of interactive fiction on many levels. It manages to create a world that seems so alive, so independent of you, the player, that if you never bothered to play, no one would seem to mind. Each non-player character moves about the house on their own, has their own motives, their own knowledge of the situation. Prying information out of them requires asking the right questions and picking up on nuances in their demeanor, a task that's much more difficult than realizing you have to use the RED KEY in the RED DOOR.

Finding clues can be tricky, but figuring out what to make of the information is even more of a riddle. You'll come across more than your fair share of cryptic notes, discarded letters, mysteriously sealed cabinets/boxes, etc. But are they just a part of the game world, or is there something more there? Is it really that suspicious someone would have dirty laundry on their floor? You'll sometimes drive yourself mad wondering about the scraps of information Make It Good feeds you. But each step forward in the story feels like an epic leap ahead. A leap you earned!

From the technical side of things, programming a game that's so open-ended requires a lot of planning/forethought, a lot of testing, and a near-infinite amount of patience. The fact that the game was pulled off at all is a feat unto itself, but that it's so incredibly well-written, intriguing, and absorbing is quite impressive. The murky, gritty feeling the writing style imparts sets a brilliant mood for the game. You can almost see the muted colors, feel the stale atmosphere and taste the tension in the air.

Make It Good is one of those games you don't play, you let it absorb you. It requires you to think outside of gaming convention and react naturally to each situation. You'll probably have a difficult time solving the mystery, starting from scratch more than once and feeling lost at almost every turn. You'll enjoy every moment of intrigue, however, and the drive to see the story through to the end never waivers.

    • standing in the muddy garden while wearing her shoes without letting her see you

    • cleaning your prints from the letter opener

    • making the letter opener bloody again without Joe catching you

Loving it so far! The writing style is pretty good, and I'm enjoying trying to figure out the right commands to get stuff done!

Reply

Apparently attempting to kill the wife doesn't help the case advance. Drinking whiskey and driving = bad in this game also...

Reply

Having a really hard time with this.

I've met three people:

Emilia (the wife), Angela (the maid), and William (in the shed)

I've collected these items:

*Bloody letter opener (in yucca plant)
*Wedding Picture (in the guest bedroom). There's lump in that behind the picture that I can't get to.
*Key to the closet (in the desk by the front door)
*Black box (in the closet)
*Breadknife (from the kitchen)

Also,

There was a thump in the bedroom but I don't know what caused it.

I have no idea where to go from here. None of the characters seem to have much to say. But I'm beginning to suspect that

I had something to do with the murder, because when I had Joe analyze the letter opener, my prints were all over it even though I know I was wearing gloves.

If anyone can help it would be fantastic. I'm no good at these games but I'd like to be. Escape games haven't been too challenging for me lately, but these here IF games take it to a whole new level.

Reply

JohnnyCaps, I had the same thought regarding

the fingerprints on the letter opener! I was thinking I had just mixed it up in my head, I am glad someone else noticed the discrepancy.

I also found that there are

footprints in the garden outside, under the roses that lead to the bedroom window. I ran out of time after telling Joe about them, and he went to make a cast, so nothing came of that so far. I'm going to start over and see what he makes of it. When interrogating the characters, it has been made clear that Emilia's boyfriend Anthony has a sprain, so I wonder if this clears him of being able to climb the roses to the window?

Reply

Sorry for the double post, but one last speculation:

I started over, and as soon as Angela left the room, I did too, instead of investigating the body right away. I heard the thump in the hallway, and when I went into the guest bedroom, Angela was there looking extremely guilty. Putting this together with what I found from investigating the room...

I think that the thump was her fussing with her suitcase, as it is mentioned that it is extremely heavy.

Reply

There seems to be a way to

trace over the marks on the dresser using the blank sheet from the rolltop desk and the pencil from the study, but you need to clean the dresser off first - can't figure that out yet

Also I can't figure out how to get the letter opener.

Reply

I think I have figured it out. I'm going to have to start over and test some things to confirm, but for reference, this is why:

check out the pills in the upstairs bathroom.

Reply

I'm stuck with

angela's suitcase. I get the impression she went out of her way to hide it, but even after unlocking it I've got nothing from the clothes.

I'm continually confused that

my finger prints are on the knife and my footprints are in the dirt outside, even if I wore gloves before touching the knife, or if I never climbed down from the bedroom window. I wonder if I'm the culprit? Neither arresting nor accusing myself work, either in front of Joe or away from him.

I also can't find

a key for the black box in the locked cupboard.

I think the culprit is

Anthony, but because he never gets home, I have no way to accuse him.

Any insight (in suggestions, without spoilers, preferably) would be great.

Reply

SPOILERS FROM HELL, DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY ON YOUR OWN!

In the end, whodunnit is irrelevant to completing the game. What is relevant is the fact that there's enough evidence to hang you for the murder. This is film noir; use your imagination. What would a drunken, possibly dirty cop need to do in order to "Make It Good"?

Why, pin the blame on someone else, of course. You'll need to exploit the character relations and make someone else confess to the murder. There is one suspect who would make an obvious culprit and another who would do anything to protect that suspect. Just make sure no one sees you carry anything self-incriminating.

If it's any consolation, there is an epilogue sequence that reveals the real murderer. (It's not you.) But it'd be impossible to point the finger at the culprit without implicating yourself. That's life.

Reply

I have not read the spoilers from hell, so forgive me if this is covered in them, I just wanted to share for those of us who are trying to do it ourselves:

I tried picking up the water jug and I dropped it. There is a smashed up plate in the pantry. With all the other things pointing to my having been here before (fingerprints, footprints, William's recognition)... That just seems a little suspicious.

Reply

I got frustrated with the conversing with the game and just typed "strangle angela"

I laughed out loud when he actually tried to do it.

Reply

I can't piece it together and close this thing.

I didn't even realize before, but there's a whole other set of rooms to the south on the second floor--D'OH!

Something I realized:

If you open the window when you first get to the murder room, Joe the police officer will notice the open window and assume it was like that when you got there, and mention that the killer may have gotten out that way. So I'm guessing you need to frame someone by doing this kind of stuff. I took the whiskey out of my car and placed it down before knocking on the front door. When Joe comes in for the first time he mentions that he found a whiskey bottle outside. The maid mention's her boyfriend's drinking problem, so maybe I can use that? If you ask the maid about the pills in the medicine cabinet she says that it's for her boyfriend's ankle--so he couldn't have climbed out the window. I dunno. Any ideas? I'd like to accuse Anthony, but I don't have enough evidence.

This has got me goin', fo' sho'.

Reply

What's this game about? I only get a googlecode text with some vague instructions. No graphics at all!

Reply

That's because it's interactive fiction, a text adventure. =) No graphics.

Reply

Sorry to be "that guy," but the bad grammar in this game is killing me. I am sitting or seated in my car, but I am certainly not "sat" in it.

There. Got that off my chest.

Reply

And what's a "kerb"?

Reply

Posey - kerb is a British spelling for curb. And 'sat' is commonly used like that in British fiction, as well.

Now, a spoiler-ish question...

How the heck do you talk to Emilia about Anthony cheating on her? Is it possible? Is it possible to tell her you're accusing Anthony of the murder? I don't play much IF, so I'm not using the right verbs, I'm sure...

Also, for those confused about the medicine...

Have you analyzed it yet?

If you have, have you

Spoken to Emilia about it being fake? If not, you can

take it in front of her three times and she'll believe you.

Reply

Oh, a follow up on the 'sat' issue - search Wikipedia for 'American and British English differences' and it's under 'Miscellaneous grammatical differences'. :)

Reply

How do I change the settings?

Reply

Is it normal to have to start all over again when you stuff up and get kicked off the case?

Reply

Binks,

Sorry for my late response, but...

the "sticky stuff" can be cleaned with the whiskey.

Then you can trace over the marks on the dresser.

Reply

You can also wash off the letter opener in the bathroom and replace it before Joe gets there. I don't know if that actually helps, but it's possible.

Also, you can erase the footprints in the flowerbed, take your shoes off (I did it sitting in the guest bedroom chair), and use another pair of shoes (I used the maid's from the closet) to make footprints in the flowerbed. The maid saw me wearing her shoes through the kitchen, so maybe it'd be best to do when she's not there.

Reply

Here are somethings I found out

I tried to look for the suit case but I couldn't when I heard the thump noise

I left the room and followed Angela into her room. Moved the wicker chair around to look on top of the wardrobe but nothing happened

You can dial a phone number from a paper, but first you have to engage the phone

the pills are sugar

Reply

So, I think I'm stuck here.

I moved the wicker chair in the bedroom, and looked under the bed to find a red spot. I told joe to analyse the red spot in the guest bedroom, and he just says he doesn't have time for my stories.

Reply

Whoa! Bit of an odd easter egg. The policeman was giving me a hard time, so I tried to spit on him and it translated to something VERY similar, and then did it figuratively.

Reply

I got Anthony to show up:

I called that number and got a girl named Jenny and got her to put him on the phone. I then told him about Jack and he hangs up and comes to the house.

Reply

Reid,

What did you tell her to get him to get on the phone? "Ask about Anthony" doesn't work, and she doesn't care when I "talk about murder", she just keeps asking me who I am, and I don't know how to tell her that.

Reply

This game is great! I've got some questions, mostly not too spoiler worthy.

Can you open your glove compartment?

Can you open the picture frame? I'm dying to figure out what that lump is.

Has anyone else:

Traipsed through people's backyards? It doesn't seem to help much except to see the kitty cat, annoy the neighbors and find ... the stick!

And speaking of that, has anyone else:

Played with the dog? I've managed to get the dog into the house but the maid just freaks out. I'm not sure there's a point to get the dog to go inside except to see that the dog is not thrilled with the smell of death.

Reply

DasChels,

When she asks who this is, just tell her "me"

Reply

To open the glove compartment:

Unlock it with the car key. Then try to open it. It will catch. You can then open it with the pencil (found in the study). Interesting find - careful what you do with it!

To read what is on the dresser:

Use the whiskey from your car.

Reply

Yes you can open the frame. Show it to someone.

Show it to the maid and you get a flimsy key. I have not found the object that belongs to the key though.

Reply

To open the frame:

You can also do it yourself, by using your car key (or any other key).

To use what you find in the frame:

It opens the suitcase on top of the wardrobe in the guest bedroom. You have to move the wicker chair over to the wardrobe, stand on the chair, and look on top of the wardrobe. That should get the suitcase down - inside is a great piece of evidence!

Another miscellaneous hint:

If you have Joe analyse something while he's in the living room, he leaves his newspaper and you can read it.

Reply

You can clean things, hide things into other things, put things into other things

you can wash the key, wash the knife(s), re-stab the body,

Reply

Has anyone been able to successfully

accuse Anthony? He always accuses me before I can do anything

Reply

I can't even figure out how to use the phone.

Reply

Catherine,

One way to

slow Anthony down is to save some of the items for Joe to analyze so while Joe is away you can incriminate Anthony

Reply

I can navigate through the menu, but how do you toggle on/off the settings? I want to turn the color on.

This game doesn't work for me - (clicking the "Play Make It Good" link). It just says

Please wait while Parchment loads.
Retrieving story file...

Any ideas? sounds like a fab game to play.

[Edit: It looks like there may be an issue with Parchment at present. You can try again later, or download the z8 file from the IF database (link at the bottom of the reivew) and use a standalone IF client. -Jay]

What a great game. It totally seemed to be in the spirit of Infocom classics Deadline, Witness and Suspect, without falling to some of the pitfalls of those games. Namely, I believe in several of those games, you had to be at the right place at the right time to see some critical scene or eavesdrop on some damning bit of conversation between guilty parties. (How your player-character somehow knew to be in those places was never realistically explained, either...) Make it Good is pretty open ended compared to those games while still being a challenging and rewarding experience.

Reply

The walkthrough doesn't work. When I get to the end, I'm stymied by the fact that

the window isn't open.

I'm going to try again, changing that.

Reply

Great game.

One thing about the walk through is that it doesn't work.

I followed it to the letter but when you get to trying to arrest the Maid, you don't know that Angela closed the window when she entered. When you ask Angela at that stage she lies and says it is closed. I went out to ask the maid and she told me that Angel was shutting the window when she walked in, but then Joe comes and arrests me.

I think you need to either ask the maid about the window earlier, or open the window right at the start so Joe thinks it was open all along.

I'll try both out now and see if I can do it.

Also I think you need a step to shut the briefcase after you get the blade back from Joe, as everyone will react to the blade as soon as you enter each room after that otherwise and it seems the last few instrcutions involve opening the briefcase (when its already open), presumably to shock Angela. Perhaps thats what caused her to lie preivously about the window, that I had the knife on display when I entered.

Reply

So yeah, lot of errors in the walkthrough. Maybe I will make one up myself for my ending.

Is

You frame Emilia into confessing; Angela's the real killer

the only ending?

I'm not counting the bad ending of

you run out of time/clues/are accused by Anthony

.

Reply

Dave:

You need to talk to Angela about the photo *twice*, and then about the window, and she'll admit to having closed it. The walkthrough only says to talk to her once, and that's not enough. You also don't need to have the knife in the briefcase nor do you have to open and close it, but you do get an amusing line if you do so.

Also, no matter what I tried, I couldn't get a different 'good' ending (i.e., not failure) that wasn't the same one as the walkthrough. Is there really only one ending? That seems surprising to me, since it's such a complex and well done game.

Reply

Question about the walkthrough:

It never mentions getting rid of the button (that's yours) under the bed. Is it not necessary to pick this up?

Reply

Thank you for the walkthrough - I've managed to tweak it so I could finish, namely by opening the window before Joe arrives. The ending is excellent.

Observations about the end sequence:

I finished by exiting the front door instead of hiding behind the hat stand, then examining the door to make sure no one was there and then reentering. Also, instead of going through the bushes I actually ducked into the shed. Either way, THAT is why Matheston seemed familiar with me. I was too drunk or hung over to realize that when I talked to him during regular gameplay.

Additionally, does Angela identify us by the hat during the investigation or doesn't she notice? I haven't played around with this in the game yet, but is there any way to successfully implicate Angela? I feel rotten about ruining Emilia's life to save my own skin.

One line was left out from the posted walkthrough, but otherwise it works. I wrote it all from memory, so some of the directional commands may be slightly off. Paste in JIGuest's streamlined version, or to fix the posted one, just add the following line:

"ask angela about window"

in the next-to-last line should be replaced by the two commands

"ask angela about photo"
"ask angela about window"

to fix it.

Angela will admit that she opened the window. You can also ask the maid about the window earlier in the game or open it before Joe gets there.

You don't have to do any of the following things mentioned above, but it makes no difference for the ending:

retrieving your button,
keep the murder weapon with you after it's been both analyzed and hidden in the clothes

You also don't have to

open and shut the briefcase right before making the arrest, but you should do this anyway for personal style points :)

The posted walkthroughs (streamlined) give the best ending. There are others.

There are several other "bad" or "less good" endings to the game that I know of.

For a partial win, you can frame Anthony with either the breadknife or the letter opener by doing everything the same but making footprints with his shoes in the mud, and he'll be arrested. You can frame the maid by doing all the same things but arresting her before Anthony gets here.

For purely bad endings: you can get Anthony to knock you out by pouring whiskey on the ground in front of him, you can pass out from drinking the whiskey, you can carry the bottle of whiskey up to the door when you knock, attack any of the suspects, or walk off the end of the road. You can also try to mess with Joe while taking the footprints, or get caught trying to frame Joe and then giving him an attitude.

You can also drive off or wait until it gets too late, or call Anthony and let him talk to Joe and you'll lose the case.

After failing after getting 99% of the way to a conclusion, I discovered that

you must get Emilia to deliver her story of finding Angela closing the window before asking Angela about the window. If Angela is not caught in the lie about the window, the solution will fail.

The posted walkthrough still needs to have the correction inserted, as mentioned above:

"ask angela about window"

should become

"ask angela about photo"
"ask angela about window"

You don't need to

ask the maid about the window to induce angela to confess (just checked), although this might also work. You just need to ask Angela about the photo directly after showing it to her.

[Okay added the line it was missing. Thanks so much :D ~Kero]

So wait, the walkthrough as posted will:

Get Angela to confess?

Can I get a confirmation on that? I don't want to go through it again if the ending is the same as what I got.

In my ending, I:

Opened the window right away, before Joe came. This ended with Emilia being framed.

joye - Kero told me he edited Jake's walkthrough to include all of his edits.

If anyone notices any errors with it, please let us know so we can fix it. Thanks! :)

There's a great easter egg that I've never seen anyone mention in discussing this game:

Joe's newspaper contains a crossword that you can play and solve. Two games for the price of one!

Call me a generalizer but IMO text only games are a dime a dozen, no matter how good they are.

Hi, I'm one of the developers of Parchment. It looks like we just got hit by the Jay Is Games effect! Or in other words, our appspot quotas got used up. Everything is fine now, and I expect it to remain that way, as fewer people are opening the links each day.

I've noticed that some people posted that if you have Joe analyze something while he's in the living room, he leaves his newspaper and you can do the crossword inside it. Hey, every time I type "save" it freezes!
How do you save your game?
Cheers :)

Reply

Ruby - in Parchment, when you type 'save', it creates a very long URL to bookmark.

I just tried and Save appears to work for me, though I am trying at the very beginning of the game.

Are there any Javascript errors being thrown when you type Save? You can check the Javascript error console easily if you're using Firefox (Tools -> Error Console).

I understand that it's been five years, but this may have to be said. The link presented here does not work anymore. But doing a little bit of digging, I found what I was looking for at the website IPlayIf. You can use this website to search for a multitude of interactive stories, text adventures, what have you. Make It Good happens to be one of those stories.

Just thought I should relay the message.

The link is still broken, and I can't find the game elsewhere. It would have been nice if Polydunami had provided a new link after he apparently managed it.

I found it, although now I see that we can't post links. Googling "make it good game" should come up with a link from textadventures.co.uk. For some reason, searching any other combination of words related to it, like including "online" makes it not show up, thus making me appear stupid.

Now that I try to go there again it's stopped working.
