Weekday Escape

ChiktionaryIt's my unfortunate duty to inform you that GrinnyP has accidentally locked herself in a room and Sonic Lover is trying to help her out with a screwdriver. Therefore I've stepped in to welcome you to Weekday Escape, so let's get right to it, shall we? In this week's escape game we're going to point-and-click our way out of some underground chambers in Mafia Escape 2, by Wild Harmony Studio.

Mafia Escape 2We know you don't need reminding, but just in case, use your mouse to click around the screen, solve puzzles, locate and use items and only occasionally combine them in the inventory which is at the top of the screen. Navigation is slightly awkward, and you'll often have to back out of screens so click the small arrow in the bottom right of the screen to move. There's no changing cursor in Mafia Escape 2, so you might feel a little short-changed at the pixel hunting element. There's almost a hidden-object feel to this game, because you have to almost press your nose up to the screen to find items, but you'll get there. Eventually.

We here at Jay Is Games understand that you, the JIG community, deserve the best of the finest escape games which GrinnyP endeavours to bring us each week. But we also understand that no Weekday Escape at all would be a tragedy. So kick back and enjoy this week's fast-tracked lucky-dip Weekday Escape. And please come back. GrinnyP will be back next week. With bells on. And an extra set of keys.

Very atmospheric. But, yeah, a lot of pixel hunting. And I think I've missed something, because I'm stuck.

I have

a bottle (actually looks more like a test tube), a hammer, a screwdriver, and yellow, red, grey and green gems. I've opened the door at the end of the corridor, but neither of the others. And I don't have the code for the grey brick. (I tried adding up all the film dates and it didn't work, so I'm assuming there are more films behind the other doors.)

Reply

not much logic here, only difficult because of the poor navigation and pixel hunting. Complete waste of time.

Reply

Code for the grey brick is

one of the dates on the wall

After that I am stuck at the same place as you.

@Daibhid:

There is a different coloured floor board in one of the rooms.

It was a lot of pixelhunting, but it was okay I guess.

Aha! Thanks, Isa and Chiktionary. Now I'm getting somewhere!

Stuck again. And annoyingly near the end, I think.

I have

A lighter. There's a cave with a crocodile in it that seems to be a dead end, and some dynamite behind bars. Do I need the dynamite to get past the crocodile, and if so how do I get it?

Thanks again! Pretty good game, apart from the pixel-hunting.

It's a good idea to play the first Mafia Escape as a warm-up. Then this is fairly easy.

Nice atmosphere, but the pixel hunting was a bit insane.

I hate how these games are always surrounded by advertisements. I misclick just a pixel outside the games and boom! you lost your progress.

I'm not a big fan of escape games with random objects inserted into the scenery and on the edges of the screen. There was a conspicuous lack of logic or plot, and the navigation was clunky to say the least. This is not to say that logic is always necessary in an escape game; but if you're trying to create an atmosphere, the effect is spoiled by using generic "assemble the gems" puzzles.

Still, the puzzles, such as they were, were straightforward and the clues weren't misleading. It was a few minutes of puzzle solving that won't leave a lasting impression.

@Fritware
Yeah, all of wild harmony's escape games are part Hidden Object. Personally, I'm a fan of the hybrid HOG/escape, but I can see how it would be offputting if you aren't.

So how do you get the door at the end of the corridor to reset when you make a mistake?

Eh...so-so. Nice atmosphere, the puzzles were mostly logical, though not terribly creative. Some things felt extraneous or out-of-place (an alligator? please...). I guess it demonstrates some of the best and worst aspects of room escapes.

Man, that's bad.

can't seem to

enter the correct date in the panel. The movie clue was Reservois Dogs. according to the answer sheet, it was in 1993. I typed it in and there is no opening that suddenly opened.

am i doing something wrong?

Reply

ignore my last comment but on the

movie clue answers, they are written incorrectly in the sheet above. It was shown that Reservoirs Dogs came out in 1993, but in the game it reads 1992.

maybe it's supposed to be that way but it might be a typo regardless.

Haven't played yet but I wanted to thank you, Chiktionary, for making sure we are not deprived of our weekly escape. (I also loved the style of the review!) So.... thank you!

By the way... What inspired you to pick this particular one? I've always wondered why certain escapes are selected. If it's a big name in flash/online/escape games, I get it. There are a LOT of escape games out there, though. I wish reviewers would include a bit about what inspired their choices since I am curious. (On that note, I notice that Dora has a soft-spot for the spookier games... wonder why. Then again, the majority of hidden object and escape-type games out there lean toward the spooky and supernatural. Bleh. I'm the odd ball who hates that sort of thing).

Huh. WHS' site seems to be down. :[

hey there fellow weekday escapers :)
I admit I rather like the hidden objects, as I am better at finding things than using them correctly, but such is life.
I am stuck with all the original doors open

all the gems but violet, parts I and IV of the symbol door code, a ?rock? with a 3 digit code, and a hammer

any hints si-vous plait?

nevermind power of posting. a bit more aimless clicking and I'm out :)

The pixel hunting was somewhat mitigated by the puzzles that didn't need all the hints to be solvable.

For the test tube one, I just had the top tube and the bottom tube, and there were only three colors left to go in the middle row, so it was pretty easy to guess since it seemed like the colors were only used once each (only 6 possible configurations, I think, if my math is correct).

For the door with the symbols, I only found three of the papers before I opened it. Set three, then clicked through the last one until it opened.

That just left the gems and the keys. I had to consult the walkthrough for the yellow key (listed in the walkthrough as "gold").

Reply

meh... not great but not horrible. Waiting to be dazzled... come one developers, get crackin!

Chiktionary:

I wonder why you didn't use the in-game names for the gems (e.g. "silver gem" vs. "gray gem"). When you place the gems into the niches, where they go is based on the first letter of the gem's name, so using different names in the walkthrough is an odd choice.

Also, you have PAPER CLUE #2 twice. The first one (under Room with the Barrels) should be PAPER CLUE #3.

Thanks so much Chipmunk! All fixed. : )
