Weekday Escape

JessWow! Just two weeks following their last release, increasingly prolific Japanese developer Place of Light has bequeathed onto us Loom Blend, another high-quality escape game to satisfy our mid-week cravings. Most excellent! The game's scenario is nothing new: you are in a room filled with diabolical puzzles and more than a few secrets, and must employ all of your wits to escape. A simple premise, but one that Place of Light does very well.

Loom BlendBefore I get on with the review proper, one quick thing I want to mention: after Loom Blend loads, two swastikas appear around the game's title. These are not, however, the type of swastikas associated with the Nazis; rather, they are symbols of good fortune that have been used around the world for thousands of years. Nazi swastikas are tilted and the "arms" always run clockwise, while the traditional symbol is not tilted and may run in either direction. The swastikas that appear in the game fall into the latter category.

Ok! Lesson over, on to the review. Loom Blend is, to put it simply, excellent. Place of Light has consistently presented some of the best escape games out there, and this one is no exception; with attractive graphics, some exceedingly clever (and, for the most part, logical) puzzles and a professional, clean interface (complete with save feature!), Loom Blend is a joy to play. Oftentimes, one of the most enjoyable elements of an escape game is the room's transformation from seemingly ordinary to intriguingly complex as the player discovers its secrets; Place of Light seems particularly skilled at these sort of metamorphoses.

You will, several times during the course of the game, be presented with Japanese characters without an English translation. Don't panic! You do not need to know what they say or mean in order to escape. You may have to remember or identify the characters when solving some of the puzzles, but that's completely doable without an understanding of the language. Unfortunately, however, for those of you running Linux the game may be unplayable; it seems that there's one code (that changes every play-through) that Linux has a text display issue with and so will not display. Sorry, Linux guys/gals.

For the lucky rest, you're in for a real treat. So, enjoy...and let's hope that Place of Light keeps up the pace!

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

OK, full walkthrough time.
Note: All steps will be shown when the spoiler opens.

  1. Look through the spyhole on the door. Note down the symbols you see.

  2. Click the switch by the door to turn of the light. Look around the room. Note the message on the wall:

  3. Powdered Green Tea.

  4. Look at the wall on the left on the message. Note that the red line "breaks" a little. Click on the breaks and look a the hint shown there (not really needed to solve the puzzle but ok).

  5. Turn the light on. Look at the table. Open notebook. Note that the message inside gives you the code - same letter, same number.

  6. Apply the code to the message you found on the wall. The missing letter can be deduced, but you can also look under the table for an additional clue.
If you don't want to trouble yourself, the code is:

    60391819 78112 514

  7. Pick up the disk under the table

  8. Solve the sliding puzzle on the table. You have to make an unbroken line from the dot to the arrow.

  9. The arrow goes in the lower left corner. From the dot you go straight, turn left, straight, turn left, turn left, turn right, turn right, arrow. I would draw it in ASCII but really, it's not that hard, just work your way from the 1st column on the left.

  10. Grab the red gem

  11. Go back to the view where you see the entire wall with the table. Click on top of the linen with the japanese message. Click the nail. This will lower the shelf on the left.

  12. Grab the handle from the lowered shelf

  13. Open the first drawer on the cabinet. You've seen the solution of the puzzle in the spyhole.

  14. It is, however, rotated 90 degrees to the left. The orientation of the triangle will help you.

  15. Put the disk in the projector on the cabinet. Turn off the light. Look at the projection at the opposite wall of the projector.

  16. It's the room you're in. Note there is a secret compartment on the floor right below the projection screen.

  17. Turn on the light. Use the handle on the secret compartment. Open it. Grab the rake.

  18. Put in the code.

  19. It's the Powdered Green Tea one.

  20. Don't be alarmed by the Japanese message. Look at the opposite wall - on the upper right corner four tiny characters have showed up. Jot them down and use them on the green wall panel.

  21. Grab the key. Open the second drawer.

  22. Click the flip-flop tablet in the drawer. Note down the symbols.

  23. Use the rake to knock down the box on the shelf to the left of the cabinet. Click on the box.

  24. Note the similarity between the upper side of the box and the linen on the wall.

  25. Look at the linen on the wall. Now look at the symbols from the flip-flop table. Use this as a code for opening the box - symbols are black circles, the rest is blank.

  26. Watch out for orientation, again. The yellow pencil is the key.

    The code is:
    XOXXXO
    OXOXXO

  27. Grab the handle. Use it to crank the mechanism on the right of the cabinet. Grab the screwdriver

  28. Look at the blue box again. Note the screw on the cabinet. Unscrew it.

  29. Open the 3rd drawer. Use the "hint" from the 2nd drawer schematic to help you solve the puzzle.

  30. The "code" goes like this. You add a dot, then you add another dot, then you remove two dots and draw a line. Three lines make a circle and then you repeat the whole process.

  31. Get the key.

  32. Turn off the light. Go to the projection screen and "unlock" it. Note the diagram.

  33. The diagram shows you "shelves" in certain order. You must follow the diagram and note the color of the shelves in order then put in those colors in the green panel (regardless of the actual symbols.

  34. Get the key. Open the door. Do NOT get out.

  35. Grab the spyhole.

  36. Turn around. Look through the spyhole again. Note the message.

  37. Get out wonder area

  38. Translate the message to numbers via the same code as earlier. Leave the odd letter (u) out. Enter all the other numbers.

  39. Put the "spyhole" in the projector power-up grid in the 1st drawer. Turn off the light and look at the projection again. Note the location of the blue gem.

  40. Inside the 2nd drawer lock.

  41. Look through the spyhole again. Click the message. This is the 3rd gem.

  42. Get out. Yay!

I'm out.

however I only found one of the "stones of color"...

I'm not out. Have just:

used the rake to retrieve the blue box in the shelf (noticed the screw in the cupboard next to it too) but can't work out the code. I already

entered the powdered green tea code to change the numbers in the hidden underground area to kanji

Any ideas anyone?

Has to be the silliest first comment ever... Poor Jess and her laptop, now I'm going to have to play this and work out my own analysis...

It's a shame that the Nazi's misappropriated the swastika and that its meaning has been forever tainted by their legacy.

I lived in Japan for quite some time and became accustomed to seeing swastikas at temples and shrines and on banners during festivals.

Short-term tourists from outside of Asia are often puzzled and even offended when they see these symbols prominently displayed. They have little idea of the long history of the swastika in Japanese and Chinese culture.

Reply

Well I was progressing rather easily and was almost about to comment how this one is really nice and light when I got utterly stuck.

I have

Red orb on the top triangle, I dropped the box on the floor with the rake and found the key for the 2nd drawer in the wall panel.

Help?

Reply

Oh, and

I forgot to add that I've found the flip-flop tablet with japanese characters in the 2nd drawer, too. I hope that the game doesn't require me to know what it says (ditto for the japanese characters in the floor where the rake was).

Reply

Opened the blue box.

The four characters on the flap in the middle draw can be found on the wall tapestry. It's the key to opening the blue box.

Reply

I'm at the same place at baba, and just as stuck :/
although I have noticed

the symbols on the red line when the lights are off

help?

Out with all three stones.

Reply

I have only two stones... red and blue...

For the flippy down bit in the second drawer down - compare the symbols to the Japanese writing on the wall... this should help you with the box...)...

The symbols on the red line don't need to be solved to get out... I fact I think I didn't need to use them to solve what it is telling you to solve... But then maybe that is why I only have two stones!

Reply

Well I am now here:

Opened the 3rd drawer, solved the code, grabbed the key, used it and.. stuck. I don't see how "using" the key helped me in any way.. :(

Reply

Exited with red stone only.

I've gone back in the room and...

...taken the spyhole box from the back of the door. Placed it in the middle of the puzzle in the top draw.

But I've can't see anything else to do.

Reply

Got Yellow Stone:

The sentence in the spyhole (once the box has been removed from the back) can be entered in number form in the code box in the floor. The yellow stone then appears in the spyhole.

Still need the blue one though...

Forgot to add my comments about the game - this one is just about perfect. Zero pixel hunting, devious puzzles, pretty difficult but not impossible, secret stuff to find AFTER you "escaped".. no to mention a save option as well as an opportunity to get back to the room if you exited earlier!

Truly one of the best room escapers you can find on this site.

Reply

Agreed... definitely a top 10 escape... I solved it entirely by myself (excluding the yellow), which is rare, and that would suggest it is rather easy, but I don't think that is true. It is because it is all logical and clever, and not random guess work / pixel hunting which most escapes end up being. Furthermore, it has that extra level of dificulty with the 3 not essential stones. Great!

Reply

i finished but with only two of the stones:)

Reply

I'm having trouble finding

the colors from the shelves.I thought they were

Orange from the tack
red from the handle
blue from the box and
green from the wall thing.

However they did not work.

Reply

@Priha,

I perhaps wasn't too clear on that part in the WT. I meant colors when the lights are off - those colored lines that pass "through" them. You can still "see" the shelves in the dark, so you just note which are their colors in the "line diagram".

I "think" the code was pink - blue - white - brown, but I'm really not sure.

When I get the code for the green panel instead of seeing 4 symbols in the upper right corner (door view)I see 4 little squares.
Can anyone help ?

I'm having some trouble getting the "complete" ending:

I translated "get out wonder area" into 715 05 302918 481. I've entered this under the secret panel and nothing happens. I've tried leaving the extra space for the "u" at the end and between the 0 and the 5, but neither is working. Am I missing something? Do I have the numbers wrong?

Reply
peroxide555 April 29, 2009 9:43 AM

ccc - i have exactly the same problem - i've tried zooming in, even copying the screen print and seeing if that works, but nothing! :( does this mean that it can't be completed??

Reply

@ccc: Install Japanese fonts?

@baba44713: Towards the end of your walkthrough...

You mention entering the code leaving the 'u' out. I couldn't figure out what you meant by this for a while. There are 16 spaces, but only 15 letters if you don't use the 'u'. I think it would be clearer if you mentioned that you need to skip that button as well.

I eventually figured it out by going back to the 180 degrees clue -- 'u' is a flipped 'n', and 'n' decodes to '2'. That button already looks like a flipped '2', so it's already correct!

Reply

One of the best i have played in ages, unfortunately i played it last sat. afternoon ;o) so no new game for me today.

No pixel hunting, great puzzles, used the save function to take a break. I got stuck on a few of the puzzles, but they wouldn't be puzzles if they were easy to figure out.

Got them all.. the spyhole, the keyhole contains both..nice to solve!

I am excited because this is my first time posting. Anyway, I am a little stumped. So far:

Found the disk and used in the projector, opened floor panel and revealed japanese characters, gotten box to fall off of shelf.

Can't figure out the green panel on the wall and the box on the floor.

Reply
SquidRock April 29, 2009 12:01 PM

OK, I figured out the code for the green panel by using:

The symbols to the upper right from the door.

I didn't like this hint because the symbols are hard to see and did not exactly match the symbols on the green panel.

Reply
Stabones April 29, 2009 1:45 PM

I know it's just me being a moron, but man I suck at getting that tile puzzle to work.

The rest of the game up until now has been great

Reply

@SquidRock: I thought baba's explanation of the pattern was pretty clear. But I'll try to say it a different way to help you out.

The first thing to know is that the order of the tiles snakes across the board. That is, read the tiles left-to-right on the first row, right-to-left on the second row, and left-to-right on the third row. Follow this order on the board and you should see the pattern baba explained.

Add dots to a tile to get the next tile. Three dots make a line, and three lines make a circle. The orientation of the dots, lines, and circles is not important. Simply choose the tile that has the right number of each to match the pattern.

Example:
Tile 1 has 1 dot.
Tile 2 has 2 dots.
Tile 3 adds to this, but 3 dots make a line, so Tile 3 will have 1 line.
Tile 4 has 1 line and 1 dot.
So Tile 5 should have 1 line and 2 dots.

Reply

If you get allllll the way through to the ending, don't forget to receive your reward.

Click on all three gems while you look at the field.

Also, that 2nd message at the end clarifies that the L/R thing is a deliberate play on words.

Reply

Don't bother playing this game if your computer won't recognise Japanese characters. I downloaded a pack for it but it didn't work. VERY frustrating as the sequence changes so no-one else can give you the answer.

@dee: If you get the sequence right and click on the center square, a blue circle should appear. If not, you have it wrong.

note the triangles.

CCC, are you using XP? If so--
Go to Control Panel, then Regional And Language Options. Hit the Languages tab, then 'Install Files for East Asian languages'. It'll ask you for your XP CD, and then you'll have to reboot after it installs it. I'm guessing Vista similar in hiding the language support. :-/

Yeah, I'm having trouble with the slider puzzle too. I tried Googl(e?)ing a video walkthrough, but no one's made one yet. I agree with crab. For once, I just want to strangle the Place of Light game designer.

Reply

For the slider puzzle, there's an easy mock-up solution.

First draw the solution on paper so you know which tile goes where. Let's say this is the solution:

123
456
78x

First align the 123 row regardless of the others. Then do the 456 row, again regardless of the final row. If 7-8 tiles are switched, try to "move them around" and try again with the 456 row. Repeat as necessary. Since you have 50% chance of stumbling upon the solution each time, I think odds are in your favor.

I would post the exact algorithm but I can't think of an easy and readable way to transcribe it.

About the slider puzzle (which I also found EXTREMELY annoying)

baba44713's solution works fine, but keep in mind there are two tiles that look exactly the same. If your "7 and 8" (to use baba's example) tiles end up in the wrong place you need to switch the upper right ("3") tile for the other tile that looks like it. If you build your "1, 2, 3" row first and have the wrong tile in your three slot I don't think any amount of rearranging your "4,5,6" row will get your 7,8 tile in the right order.

I don't like that slider puzzle. I figured it out somehow. This link might help, I started to follow the instructions, but then just messed around with it. http://www.the-spoiler.com/ADVENTURE/Future.games/nibiru.puzzles.1/Nibiru_SolvingSliders.htm

Yeah... we use the Swastika a lot in India as well, as it is a very auspicious symbol in Hinduism. The Hindu symbol was the one that Hitler adopted (and altered in form), as he was fascinated by Indian mysticism. It's really very sad that he took the swastika - which is now looked on unfavourably by almost everyone on the West.

@Guisella and Richard feehan:

Just google for 'Japanese language pack' and download it off microsoft's site (if you use windows). Installation should take about two minutes after which you'll see the symbols on the wall appear. No need to shut down your browser or restart your system. Hope this helps.

Shame for the Japanese font requirement. It was a good game up until that point. But, having spent about 20 ever more frustrating minutes I opened the walkthru and found that I should enable the Asian encoding and reboot the system.
Well, I'm not going to do it just to complete s a game, sorry. Fail. I won't give this game a score because I wouldn't give it a good one after this font thing, but otherwise i feel it would be a good one so it wouldn't be right to give it a low score. And, anyways, I don't think it would be fair to punish the makers for using their native fonts :)

I liked that there's no pixel huting here, plus the logic isn't twisted nor are the clues hard to find and decode.

This whole puzzle was way beyond me. I always find the puzzles with the best graphics to be a disappointment in other areas. For the little bit that I did manage to accomplish... I like the way it played. As for figuring out codes, no fun at all for me. Slider was easy. Puzzle in the floor...haven't got a clue. No code above door.

I SO wanted to finish this puzzle, but don't see it happening. I'm no genius, but I'm no idiot either...but even the walkthrough didn't help. =(

There is no way this game is anywhere near perfect to me.

Maddie.... you will need to enable Japanese fonts. And... I'm not sure how exactly you've gotten stuck on the puzzle on the floor.

Nos. 2, 4, and 13 in the walkthrough cover them. Did you turn out the light?

Slider puzzle

If finally you have ALWAYS two tiles leftover, which are not in the correct place, try to exchange the position of the two identical corner tiles (there are only these two) I tried 10 minutes without getting a solution and thought it was unsolvable, but after exchanging these two tiles it was easy!

sorry for the bad english,
Philipp

thoses symbols are not exactly Japanese. Some of them are Chinese. One of those sentences means "I think therefore I am."

Good Luck everyone!

This game is excellent, and only one step from perfection. At the end, there could have been a better way, or more proper way, of decoding a clue. It was the only stumped moment I had.

My frustration is in reference to the letters to numbers decoding from the 'Great down/powdered Green tea' clue. We can decipher that the letters correspond to the numbers 0 through 5, and 7 through 9; there is no number 6 assigned to any letter. I kept this in mind, thinking a letter must be out there that translates to 6. So, the final clue 'Get out wonder area' has the letter u that had not previously been assigned a number. I thought it had to be the missing number 6. The first clue, powdered Green tea, and the last clue, Get out wonder area, have the same amount of letters, fitting perfectly into the button spaces under the floor. I was sure the u was a 6, but it turns out to be an upside down 2...
