Did you miss me? I missed you! After over a year, Link Dump Friday rises from the grave, probably because I didn't bury it all that deeply anyway. (I had things to do. Things like organizing my My Little Ponies and Farscape figures. Don't judge me.) So while we shake off the grave dirt and pick the worms from our hair, let's kick things off with four fine and free online games for your pleasure. We've got a seedy cyberpunk adventure, an episodic Twine tale about a magical land and the woman who barely tolerates it, take a very unsafe moonlit drive with one weird ending, and try to satisfy one seriously petulant prince as the proprietress of one unusual shop.
Text and Drive: Friendship Never Dies - I feel like I shouldn't need to tell you not to text and drive, but don't text and drive. Unless you're playing this strange, silly game from RoboCicero, where your goal is to respond to the increasingly complex texts from your friend while you're driving home late one night while avoiding other cars. Despite how incredibly unsafe this is and you should never ever do it, the game itself isn't all that difficult, and then you get to the end, which is, uh... well. *gestures vaguely*
The Last Night - Made for (and the winner of!) #cyberpunkjam, Tim and Adrien Soret's short but oh so sweet and moody neon adventure inspired by the likes of Flashback and Blade Runner, which means there are pulsing neon lights, funky '80s "future" clothing, and gunfights galore, just like grandma used to make. When you arrive in this seedy and dangerous district, your contact informs you who your target is, and sends you to the nightclub to do your job, though getting there is going to take some good old fashioned shooting once the defenses show up. It's funky, fun, and hits all the right buttons for its theme, which is something considering it was made in just six days!
Connected Kit Yanked Into the Faerie Court - Have you ever wanted to be a smart, savvy, and fed-up female detective who finds out her apartment has a portal to the faerie kingdom and they're going to need her help whether she likes it or not? Trick question, shut up and play Caelyn Sandel's funny and well-written interactive fiction/twine adventure series, wherein Kit encounters magical wonders and creatures and is mostly just put upon. Players be warned, there is some profanity!
Ziva's Conjury Mart - If you've ever worked retail, then chances are you have a few good customer horror stories, like the woman who used to come into my bakery and try to covertly smoosh goods and then demand a discount because they were "damaged", not that I'm still bitter ten years later. But in this short, well-written Twine tale by Tory Hoke, you'll have to detail with the literal prince of all entitled nightmare customers as you play a woman trying to satisfy royalty, which is easier said than done when said royalty is a royal brat and his guards are looking for any excuse to imprison you. It won't take long to play, and its conversational writing is a charmer, making us hopeful we see a bigger adventure for Ziva one day.
