DoraI RemainHey, brah! It's a zombie apocalypse, and you know what that means! It's time to paaaaaaaaaaar-tay! We'll hold the kegger and set up the water slide next to the inflatable bouncy fort. You run into an abandoned house, barricade yourself inside, and then realise your lack of supplies means you'll have to use your point-and-click skills to find a route to safety. What? You don't think that's fair? Sorry, couldn't hear you over this rockin' party. It's okay, developers Atomic Cicada have created a handy guide to just such a situation in I Remain. Those guys are prepared for everything.

Navigate your way through the house by clicking when a yellow arrow pops up on screen when you mouse over an area. You can pick items up or investigate the scene further simply by clicking on it. Once an item is in your inventory, you can sometimes make new items simply by clicking on one item, then on the item you want to combine it with. If you want to take a break because your real world concerns take precedence over pixelated survival, then I suppose you can save your game by clicking on the floppy disk icon in the upper left corner, which would let you load your save by clicking "Continue" on the title screen when you came back. Sometimes I doubt your commitment to the zombie apocalypse. No, don't apologise. It's too late for that. *sniff!*

Analysis: While it is a solid title, what I Remain needs most is an infusion of story, or at the very least some action. The game will probably take you less than half an hour to complete, if that, and most of that is spent going back and forth with no real sense of urgency or menace. After a while it stops feeling like you're holed up in fear of the living dead, and more like you're just tottering around the house performing pesky repairs, like a post-apocalyptic Bob Vila. You find notes left behind by someone with the curious tendency of writing down their every thought and action, but they're lacking in any real personality. Either the previous occupant was Keanu Reeves, or the game missed an opportunity to inject some real atmosphere into the experience.

As it stands, I Remain is a good but brief game that ends with a cliffhanger of sorts, indicating future installments of apocalyptic adventure. Atomic Cicada is more known for its cutesy puzzle games than anything else, and this tentative step into new territory feels like a step in the right direction. With a striking aesthetic and mostly logical, if occasionally overcomplicated, puzzles, it's a perfect way to get a li'l dead in your day.

Walkthrough Guide

I Remain Walkthrough

  1. Pick up hammer. Pick up nails. Combine in inventory to get "hammer and nails". Use hammer and nails on open front door.

  2. Turn left. Take magnet from fridge.

  3. Move forward into the living room. Click on the nearest window.

  4. From the window, take the curtain, small clamp, and curtain rod.

  5. In the living room, click on the desk to zoom in. Open the drawer closest to the fireplace to take the basement key.

  6. Go back to kitchen. Use basement key on locked door. Go down into the basement.

  7. Take the box of nails from the shelf above the stairs. Combine with hammer.

  8. Go back into the living room, then down the hallway at the far end of the room. Use hammer and nails on window to board it up.

  9. Go into the guest room (second door on the right hand wall). Take the bedsheet. Open the closet. Take the fuse.

  10. Go back to the hall, then into the bathroom. (last door in the hallway) Take the extension cord, and the pot in the bathtub.

  11. Go back to the kitchen. Open the fuse box next to the basement door. Place the fuse in the very bottom space. Take it back out after you hear a scream. Put it into the other, unmarked slot.

  12. Go into the basement. Click on the corpse. Click on it again to take the bedroom key.

  13. Use the pot on the water in the room to fill it. (You may have to try filling it in a few different spaces before it works.

  14. Back at the main basement screen, move the cursor towards the bottom until a yellow arrow pointing down appears. Click to move under the stairs. Click on the tarp to pick it up. Combine the tarp, the bed sheet, and the curtain in your inventory.

  15. Back at the main basement screen, click on the reddish pipe in the upper left-hand corner of the room. Use the small clamp on it.

  16. Go back upstairs to the hallway with the three doors. Use the bedroom key on the first door to unlock it and go inside.

  17. In the master bedroom, take the bedsheet and the drill from the floor, and the fishing hook from the top of the safe. Combine the bedsheet with the tied sheets in your inventory. Combine the fishing hook with the curtain rod to get the rod and hook.

  18. In the hallway, use the rod and hook on the attic door in the ceiling. Go into the attic.

  19. In the attic, click on the window twice until it tells you that you need to remove the bars.

  20. Use the hammer on the gray brick wall in the far right corner of the room. Use the extension cord on the hole in the wall.

  21. Go back down to the living room and zoom in on the fire place. Click on the extension cord to plug it into the outlet.

  22. Go back into the attic and use the power drill on the window.

  23. Use the combined sheets on the opened window to be able to climb out down to the van.

  24. Inside the van, take the rubber boots from behind the first seat (you'll put them on automatically), and the sump pump parts from behind the other. Click the front of the vehicle to move forward. Take the fishing float from the dashboard. Combine the fishing float with the magnet in your inventory. Take the key from the right front seat.

  25. Go back to the bathroom. Use the fishing float and magnet on the pipe in the floor. Pour the water from the pot into the pipe, and take the magnet with key that floats to the service. If you manage to mess up, you can go back into the basement and flush the water out of the pipe by clicking on the switch in the upper-right hand corner of the room next to the locked cabinet.

  26. Go back to the van and move to the front of the vehicle. Click in the switch by the steering wheel to turn on the headlights. Use the key on the glove compartment to open it. Take the rubber gloves inside.

  27. Go back to the kitchen. Remove the fuse powering the attic from the fuse box, and place it back into the bottom slot to power the basement.

  28. In the basement, click on the small square in the left-hand wall to zoom in. Use the sump pump parts on it.

  29. Use the rubber gloves on the sump pump to turn it on.

  30. With the water drained, move to the cabinet in the upper-right corner of the room. Use the power drill, which will automatically be plugged in, on the cabinet to open it. Take the binoculars and the fuse inside.

  31. Back in the kitchen, use the new fuse on the last empty space in the fuse box to restore power to the attic. No more fuse swapping!

  32. Go into the living room and use the key you found in the van on the locked drawer of the desk. Take the pen and paper from inside the desk drawer.

  33. Go back inside the van. Move to the front of the van, then click on the windshield until you're looking out. If it's too dark, make sure you click the switch by the steering wheel to turn on the headlights!

  34. Use the binoculars on the window, and the pen and paper to write down the safe combo.

  35. Go back into the master bedroom and use the safe combo on the locked safe. Open it and take everything inside... including a spark plug.

  36. Go back inside the van. Move to the front of the vehicle. Use the spark plugs on the console between the two front seats. Use the key on the steering wheel.

Sorry folks, would have had this up sooner but I'm a mite unwell right now. I hope this is clear to follow.

I Remain Walkthrough

I wrote a walkthrough for this. I wrote it so that at each point I list all the items you can have at that point and then go on to list what can be done to further your position with just those items. (So if you don't have everything, perhaps go explore some more - if you do, consider what you can do with what you have). I don't put a lot of details in about what is found exactly where, but this should, I hope, allow you to solve it yourself with minimum intervention. (There's a lot of nested spoiler tags).

Start

Do you have?

  • Hammer

  • Nails

Then:

You will need to board up the door before you can do anything else.

Combine the hammer and nails

Use the combined items on the door.

Do you have?

  • Magnet

  • Curtain

  • Clamp

  • Curtain rod

  • Basement key

Now do you have?

  • Nails

You can't go far into the basement, but you can open up the door.

    Above the basement stairs

Then:

Try to get through the hallway now.

Board up that window!

Combine the hammer and nails again.

Click on the window with the hammer and nails.

Do you have?

  • Pot

  • Electrical cord

  • Sheet

  • Fuse

Then:

You want to be able to go downstairs.

Kill the zombie that's standing there.

Take a look at that fuse-box.

Give power to the basement.

Put the fuse in the bottom slot.

And take it out again!

Do you have?

  • Bedroom key

  • Water

    Fill your pot.

From the water in the basement.

  • Tarp

    Under the basement stairs

And now do you have?

  • Bedsheet

  • Drill

  • Hook

Then:

Take a look at what's in the hallway.

There's something on the roof.

Combine the hook and rod.

And then:

You need light up here.

Don't think candles, tinderboxes, or get hung up on that stupid unmovable lamp.

Don't even think "light". Think "power".

There were two empty spots in that fusebox.

Move the fuse from the basement to the empty (attic) slot.

Then:

You need to get through that window.

I wonder if the drill would help?

That wall is a little weak.

Use the hammer on the wall.

But the fireplace is still going.

Did you find the pipe that is responsible for that?

Stop the propane from getting to the fireplace.

Use the clamp.

Okay, let's attack those bars now.

We need power up here.

Feed the cord through the hole in the attic.

Plug it in.

Use the drill on the bars.

Now, to get down there....

Tie all your sheets together.

Do you have?

  • Boots

  • Sump pump parts

  • Float

  • Desk key

Now do you have?

Pen and paper

In the desk drawer

Then:

There's something in that pipe in the bathroom.

Shiny things are often...

Metal! And metal things are often...

Magnetic!

But you want to be able to get your magnet back.

Perhaps we can use this pipe against itself.

Attach the magnet to the float.

Pour your water down the pipe.

Do you have?

  • Van key

Now do you have?

  • Gloves

In the van. Where you couldn't get before.

    Glove compartment

Then:

Let's get rid of this water.

Put power back to the basement.

From the fusebox.

Fix the pump.

Use the gloves on the pump.

Now:

That wire box in the basement.

Use the drill.

Do you have?

  • Binoculars

  • Extra fuse (now that you don't need it.)

Then:

Have you any idea where that combination code is?

You can see it from the van.

I know, there should be plenty of light, that lamp is shining right on it! Well, forget the lamp, you really can't move it.

There's another source of light nearby.

In the van.

Turn on the headlights.

Use the pen and paper on the code.

Do you have?

  • Spark plugs

  • Money

  • Bandages

Then:

Let's get out of here.

Put the plugs in the van.

And the key in the ignition.

I've got to say, these are some of the most unmotivated zombies ever. "Oh, he's on top of the car. I guess we could, you know, climb on top of the car too, and eat him, but nah. Too much effort. I'll just stand here and gently wave my hands in the air. That should scare him."

Reply

I normally get scared at these sorts of games but once I realised the zombies don't actually do anything I was fine.

Was simple enough to complete anyway.

Reply

how do I use the socket next to the fireplace? it asks me "where do i need power that's within reach of this socket"...

You need to find a use for the power before you can plug anything in. If you need a spoiler:

Have you been to the attic yet?

You need to click on the bars on the window before you can plug anything in.

Reply

i nailed the boards over the window but i can't get to the attic because i think I need a hook. I have the curtain rod but I think I need something to attach it to.

Reply

Cabbit:

Have you been in the master bedroom(not the guest bedroom)? There's an item there you need, which you can combine with the rod. If you haven't gotten the key for that yet:

Have you been in the basement? Killed the zombie?

Use the fuse in the fusebox to kill the zombie, then loot his body to get the key to the master bedroom.

I can't seem to find the fuse...

how do I get whatever is in the drain? And how do I drain the basement?

Wow...I like this game. It's like mini-resident evil before it's becoming too 'action'.

How exactly do you kill the zombie in the basement by inserting the fuse? I placed it and that lazy excuse for a zombie is still moaning.

For the basement power, put the fuse in the bottom space in the fuse box.

Make sure you clip the fuse into the right space. There are more than one. When you get it right you'll know

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the shiney thing out of the pipe in the bathroom.

I've filled the pipe with water but that doesn't do it. I released the water with valve in the basement but that didn't help either.

Not bad...not great, but not bad. I'm pretty easy to please with escape games - I don't need a whole lot of plot, just gimme a room or house and let me figure it out. Sometimes I like puzzles, but good old fashioned "find object A and use with object B" works for me, too! There were a few instances where I thought it was a bit of a logical leap to figure out what the "object B" in that equation was supposed to be, but I only had to use hints twice to beat the whole thing, and I finished in under 45 minutes, with interruptions, so that's not too bad. Good diversion!

fuse box

I didn't know there're two places to put the fuse into in the fuse box!

Reply

I like both walkthroughs... though neither seem to say where the propane pipe is. I'm stumped.

Reply

Well... I finally got through it with the help of Dora's walkthrough. Overall, I like the graphics and the story was 'okay'. As escape games go, this was about as logical (and I use the term exceedingly loosely) as any I've played. A bit more atmosphere, and a lot less back and forth movement would have been a plus.

Hope you feel better soon Dora!

@joye - I think the zombies were doing the "Wave Your Hands in the Air Like You Just Don't Care!" routine.

Reply

Nevermind... found it.

Reply

Not sure I've ever seen a

van where the spark plugs can be installed from the drivers seat....

Reply

I thought this was a lot of fun. My favorite escapes are the ones where you find, combine, and use items, especially if they make sense. As for storyline, I don't care if there are zombies or ghosts or cute little cartoon animals.

I liked Parmeisan's "do you have these items" walkthrough, and I used it several times to double-check my progress. I did need Dora's full walkthrough to find

the fuse in the guest bedroom closet.

Logic was sometimes stretched a little thin, but otherwise this was an enjoyable half-hour (okay ... 47 minutes).

CatalystParadox January 26, 2010 1:15 AM

Was very confused about the

headlights.

You shouldn't be able to turn them on like that!

Reply

My only real complaint about this game was it takes sooo long to switch between areas, and the arrows were in non-obvious locations. I often ended up switching rooms or views, instead of looking at something.

I think in larger point-and-click games like this, once you visit a major area you should be able to jump back there with a single click, like Hanamushi: Flower Insects. It's annoying when, say, you are

in the front of the van, and need to get to the basement.

It's was 9 or 10 clicks to switch between those areas, with 2 fade animations. And that movement was made at least a couple of times, even if you knew exactly where to go. More than that if you were still searching around.

Overall it was pretty good, though.

Finnaly, a zombie that doesn't scare the living daylights out of me.

Reply

Awww, the zombies don't scare the daylights out of me... what's the fun in that? They are definitely canonical "slow zombies."

Except the ridiculous location and use of the last item, the puzzles were pretty darn cool and actually made some sense. I agree, the dragging (and unnecessary) transition screens made all the traveling a chore.

Reply
Erwin Schrodinger January 26, 2010 2:00 PM

Cool game, but with on question: Why bother to take the money and bandages at the end of the game since they never get used?

Reply

I've played much better, but all the same, it was all right, i must agree with joye though i mean, the zombies didnt hardly try to get you, but oh wel! :D

Reply

Quite awful, for one, those transition sequences took up half my time playing, there's really no need for them. Also, unrealistic interactions - you say that drawer/glovebox is locked? I use my hammer, not a key. Also, I can remember 6 digits, having to write them down is idiotic. In addition, I would just whack that zombie in the basement. P.S. - you don't need 2 fuses, you can just switch one to wherever needed.

Reply

The extra fuse is too little too late. By that point I was already frustrated with the switching and the transition screens got a bit annoying too. The dripping in the bathroom wasn't stopped by muting the game (took me a while to figure out what that noise was)

Other than those points, a decent game

Reply

has anyone found a use for the bandages and money? seems a bit random...

Reply

Boy, I sure am glad this van has the engine located next to the driver's seat! Makes installing spark plugs super easy.

Sure does get toasty when I'm driving, though…

Also: I can remember three two-digit numbers. I don't need to write them down, in-game or out-of-game.

Reply

I'm easy to please with point & clicks, but 2 out of 10! :( Are these zombies too lazy to come murder the computer player who's not even scared of a jump scare anymore? Really...The item needs are stupid AT BEST! I need to kill zombies? I pull my hammer. You'd think anyone who'd survived to get themselves locked IN this house would be smart enough to at least get a gun during the apocalypse! Don't waste your time.

I sincerely found this game tedious and unentertaining with all the backtracking and the slow transitions. I did like the art style and the plot was dandy for a room escape, but on a con it became apparent that the zombies were nothing to fear very early in the game.

On a different note,

I had some troubles with the attic. I couldn't see anything. I thought maybe it was one of *those* games where you can reset the clock on your computer to effect… heh. Any way, I stopped playing after I climbed down to the van, it was just too wishy washy

As an FYI, many years ago a friend drove a Dodge van that had the engine inside the passenger compartment between the front seats with a plastic cover on it. It was convenient for breakdowns in the winter or inclement weather!

i have to say that was the most annoying point click adventure EVER! Seriously it was all over the place... also the

fuse box was the most annoying thing switching from basement to loft!! and the decide to give you both fuses near the end when you flood the place "sigh" just didnt like the fact i had to go up and down all over the place when if i was in a real zombie invasion i would just give up now and then! i mean the last thing i would do is put a magnet down a drain lol

there is one thing this game managed to do..and that made me tired again because i woke up at 4oclock in the morning and could not sleep! now playing this game all i want to do is sleep lol

I like:

The brother's reaction to being attacked by zombies. I must say to everybody who complain abput the fuses... wake up
think it would really happen you scavenge the area and find a house like this. (and no every gun who lied anywhere was already picked up...)
and then you do exactly the same as in the game... and than you complain by who that you couldnt find the fuse earlier??? or when you couldnt find a weapon and a zombie is eating you.... do you complain by god that you couldnt find a minigun (in you neighborhood)

COME ON i dont know if he/she wanted to do it a bit real but for me i must say be happy you had all the stuff in his home otherwise how would you survive????
